Hyper-V 2016 to 2016 Standard - Migrating a VM

I have a smaller server running OS 2016 Hyper-V. It contains 3 VMs (2 Linux based, 1 Windows 2016 180 day trial based-license is up).  But I now have a 2016 Standard license and want to take advantage of the 2 Windows VMs that comes with 2016 Standard.  The plan is to convert my 2016 Hyper-V to 2016 Standard. The box/hardware will not change, just the underlying OS.

1 of the Linux VMs and the Windows VM are not very important, however, 1 of my Linux VMs has WAYYYY too much work done to lose it (a mountain of customized files across 2 disks and a lot of customization of the primary app it's running) with it to lose it.

The intent (I believe best practice?) is to export that critically important Linux VM, do a fresh install of 2016 standard, import back in the critically important Linux.  Are chances good the Linux VM and the primary app its running will come back just like it was? Any suggestions on best practice for what I want to do?

Hi,

Was wondering if anybody else is having this issue..  I'm on Windows 10 RS5 (1809) and I'm unable to create a new VM and power it up..  It is coming up with the following error:

I came across this issue when trying to get Docker For Windows installed..  So went back to basics and tried to create a basic VM..

I've tried disabling the Hyper-V :

Rebooted and then re-enabling it:

Rebooted, same issue :(

So was wondering if anybody else has had this issue and resolved it?

Thanks

Cannot delete checkpoints

Hi,

We have a Windows 2012 R2 VM with checkpoints which we are unable to delete and getting the below message. Now the only way to fix this is to export the VM to a different location and then import it again. Will it merge the VHDs with checkpoints or what is the proper way to get rid of check points without losing the data?

Cant Import Virtual Machine

Hello. Can you please advise me? I have just installed WIndows Server 2016 on a new Dell Server. I have also added Three Hyper V machines and the settings to the Hyper V machines are in E:\HyperV\ Now in explorer I can see E:\HyperV\LeyMacMySQL\Virtual Hard Disks\LeyMacMySQL.vhdx The file size is 26.8GB and the Attributes are A and in Availability it shoes Available offline. Now when I go to Import Virtual Machine, I navigate to the folder and it says No Items match your search and I can not see the file there. I can however make a new Virtual Machine by using this file, but why can I not see it to Import it back?

Thanks Paul.

Hyper-v Network Internal

Hello

In defining an Internal Network in Hyper-V, it says that the VM can communicate with other VMs and with the Physical Host.

However in the tests I did the VM can not ping the Physical Host, it only can ping if I change to External Network.

The definition also says that a VM configured with External network can not access the physical network.

Now the Host to be accessed in the physical network, as would the VM access configured with Internal Network, to the physical host, if I can not ping the physical host?

The firewall was disabled in both directions for testing and even then I can not ping the physical host, the VM being configured with Internal Network.

I also put the VM in the same physical host subnet

I wonder if I'm getting it wrong or is this normal?

Removing a CSV

Windows Server 2016 With Storage Spaces Direct:

My first CSV is a 2-way Mirror that I want to remove. I have used "Move Virtual Machine Storage" to emtpy Clusterstorage\volume1". All VMs are running OK on another CSVs now. However there is 1 file left on volume1:  \Hyper-V\shared\Groups\groupregistry.vmcx. The file cannot be deleted. The cluster looks OK if I set the CSV to offline and remove the file, but before I removed the CSV i noticed that VM migration between nodes did not work. As soon as the CSV was enabled again everything went back to normal, and a new file groupregistry.vmcx was created.

Is the cluster dependent on volume1, or is this configurable? How can I get this disk removed and replaced? Or can the disk be reconfigured as a 3-way Mirror or Parity?

Windows Server 2012 R2 - Hyper V having trace route issue

Dear Team,

We are facing one problem in our Hyper V environment. Hope you guys can help me out. Let me explain it what the issue was,

We have installed Hyper V role on windows server 2012 R2 and the machine was up to dated with windows patches. Then we createdExternal vSwitch and Internal vSwitch. On the Host we assign the Internal vSwitch IP address as 192.168.137.1 and subnet 255.255.255.0

Then We shared the internet from the External Adapter from the host machine to Internal Adapter.

After that, we created a Virtual machine and assigned the Internal vSwitch to that Virtual machine. Once we done all the configuration, Internet was working fine. But when we try to ran trace route from Virtual machine we are facing an issue,

1st hop having packet loss and it reach to the Default gateway (Internal Adapter IP)

2nd hop shows request timed out

3rd hop – its fine from this hop and it reach to the host IP address, from then on its usual traffic without timed out.

Below screenshot for your reference,

We would like to know, whether we have done the configuration in right manner, or it normal behavior in Hyper V.

Please let us the know, if any change is needed.

Note: If this is not a right channel to discuss this, kindly redirect to appropriate channel. Thank you

Best Regards,

Arun

Hyper-V 2019 Cluster - Monitored Services Unable to connect

We have built a new 3-node Hyper-V Server 2019 cluster with shared SAS connected storage.

Guests servers are running fine (Windows 2019 Standard), but I am unable to get the Failover Cluster Manager to monitor the guest services.

Error message is "Unable to retrieve the list of services from the virtual machine XXXXX."

  • Guests, hosts and Failover Cluster are int he same subnet
  • All are in the same Active Directory
  • I'm using a domain admin account
  • Virtual Machine Monitoring firewall rule is enabled

Any ideas what I'm missing to get this working?
