Dynamic Memory - Over Allocation

$
0
0

I have an environment where hosts have 256Gb RAM and VMs are allocated a dynamic memory maximum of 1Tb as a default (Startup =4Gb and Min = 512Mb).

I have read a number of posts and articles that state you should not over allocate dynamic memory (which makes sense) but they are all for 2008R2 (some 2012R2). I am trying to find guidance/evidence that the current default is not best practice and find documentation on how dynamic memory in 2016 should be configured.

Is anyone aware of any good sites, documents, deep dives, etc that can help me draw up guidance for a build guide?

Issues with SCP in CentOS VM

$

TL;DR:

SCP from our Linux VM hangs after it reaches 100%.

The Setup

In the course of development, my team has created a CentOS VM which hosts an application that employs SSH (and SCP) in order to execute tasks on other hosts. Originally, this was working perfectly fine.

We were originally using Oracle VirtualBox since it's recommended for VM development but our company decided that we should use Hyper-V for development as well so we made the switch.

This application is still just in the development phase so the VM is just running on Hyper-V for Windows 10. We're using Vagrant to stand up the VM very quickly and forwarding the port that the application is running on using a PowerShell command. We simply attach the VM to the default switch. This works as intended, the application is accessible on that port.

Issue with SSH

Very quickly our application was beginning to fail when it came to the SSH connection to other hosts. We had to modify the SSH configuration in order to set the HMACs by going to /etc/ssh/ssh_config and uncommenting the HMAC line. This fixes the SSH issue and we're able to SSH to other hosts perfectly fine after this. It's odd considering that this was not an issue with VirtualBox but at least we have a workaround.

Issue with SCP

After we got SSH working, we noticed that SCP was having issues. This one is a bit more odd. When attempting to SCP a file from our node to another, the percentage indicator reaches 100% then it hangs indefinitely. This will successfully create the file on the target but that file will be empty. Increasing the verbosity of the SCP utility we see:

SCP Output:

scp -vvv tst.txt user@target.domain:/tmp/
...

PROBLEM VMMS

Hi,

I had a problem with a backup this morning and after research i founded a problem on VSS Writer:

Writer name: 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer'
   Writer Id: {66841cd4-6ded-4f4b-8f17-fd23f8ddc3de}
   Writer Instance Id: {c35d6ab0-9588-412f-ae7b-cdc37534501f}
   State: [8] Failed
   Last error: Non-Retryable error

So i founded also this command to resolve the problem:

winmgmt /regserveradmin info
wmiprvse /regserver
for /f %s in ('dir /b *.dll') do regsvr32 /s %s
cd %windir%\system32\wbem

But, since i made this, the VMMS service dissapear, i can not access to hyper-v manager anymore, i can not move a VM , if i do it, the VM turn OFF immediately.

I try to recreate the service with "sc" command but nothing work. since this morning i search to try to repair Hyper-V VMMS but no result.

Can someone help me, please?

Hyper-V Server 2019 - RDP not working

$

Hi,

So I am testing with Hyper-V Server 2019, which I deployed to three brand new HP Proliant gen10 machines. I'll test on them for a while before putting them in production. Installation was a breeze, as with Hyper-V 2016. However, I can't seem to enable RDP on Hyper-V Server 2019. When I enable through the menu, it says it's done so, but alas, netstat -a reveals there isn't even a process listenening on port 3389.

I checked the registry, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server is correct. The required services are running. Firewall is completely disabled through netsh for testing. Remote administration is working fine, RDP is not listening at all.

Anyone else ran into this?

Removing a CSV

$

Windows Server 2016 With Storage Spaces Direct:

My first CSV is a 2-way Mirror that I want to remove. I have used "Move Virtual Machine Storage" to emtpy Clusterstorage\volume1". All VMs are running OK on another CSVs now. However there is 1 file left on volume1:  \Hyper-V\shared\Groups\groupregistry.vmcx. The file cannot be deleted. The cluster looks OK if I set the CSV to offline and remove the file, but before I removed the CSV i noticed that VM migration between nodes did not work. As soon as the CSV was enabled again everything went back to normal, and a new file groupregistry.vmcx was created.

Is the cluster dependent on volume1, or is this configurable? How can I get this disk removed and replaced? Or can the disk be reconfigured as a 3-way Mirror or Parity?

Windows Error Reporting: EventID 1001 - Failover_clustering_resource_error

I'm running Server 2016 with S2D in a cluster to host Hyper-V VMs.  I get a ton of the following "Information" messages on my host servers running failover cluster, S2D, and Hyper-V.  It seems like the failover cluster has an error, but these are reported in the Application log as "Information" messages.  Anyone else seeing these or have any thoughts on them?  Are these just information or actually something to fix?

Availability of Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2019

Dear Microsoft!

On https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-hyper-v-server-2019 you link the hyper v core server setup. However, it only leads to https://cloudblogs.microsoft.com/windowsserver/2018/11/13/update-on-windows-server-2019-availability/ and there is no download available.

When are you planning to make it available?

By the way: The download that was briefly online https://software-download.microsoft.com/download/pr/17763.1.180914-1434.rs5_release_SERVERHYPERCORE_OEM_X64FRE_EN-US.ISO is barely usable for 2 reasons:

A after installing it and activating Remote desktop, the server does not start to listen on port 3389. No RDP possible!

B Trying to do an in-place upgrade from Hyper-V Server 2016 leads to an error: "The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during SET_Product_Key operation"

Enhanced Session Mode Not Available Until First Login on VM

$

0

Scenario:

- Windows 10 1809 Enterprise (x64) host.

- Windows 10 1809 Enterprise (x64) shielded guest VM on this host.

- RDP is enabled on the guest and remote desktop works to the guest system from the host.

- Enhanced session is enabled/allowed in Hyper-V for the server and for the user.

Problem:

- New shielded VM, fully deployed successfully using PowerShell.

- When starting VMConnect, "Enhanced Session" is greyed out and unavailable initially for the guest VM.

- Once a user (any user) logs into the guest VM one time using remote desktop, Enhanced session is available for that guest VM and works fine from then on.

Things tried:

- Rebooting host.

- Restarting guest.

- Disabling and re-enabling Enhanced session in the Hyper-V settings.

What's missing and what happens during this first user login to all of a sudden make Enhanced session available and/or why is it not enabled/available initially?

Windows 2012 R2 Hyper V to Windows 2008 R2 Hyper V

Hello all,

My newness to the world of Servers can be encapsulated within the last 10 months.  You can say this responsibility has been tossed onto my plate. I have learned a lot since then and manage to find solutions to my problems by "Google Searching" my way out with the Offline network that I now maintain.  I now seek help because I am working backwards in software.

I "inherited" a Windows Server 2012 R2 that has a VM Ubuntu 16.04 Server on it.  On Ubuntu was created a intranet Web Server.  What I am wanting to do is copy the Ubuntu Server with the Web Server content and put it on Windows Server 2008 R2 on its Hyper-V.

How can I accomplish this task?  WS 2012 R2 has the replication feature, but WS 2008 R2 does not. I don't want to export it either as I want the web server on both. Could I use a 3rd-party software to copy the VM Ubuntu?  What would you recommend?  Any other suggestions or ideas?

Thanks for your help.

Cannot delete checkpoints

Hi,

We have a Windows 2012 R2 VM with checkpoints which we are unable to delete and getting the below message. Now the only way to fix this is to export the VM to a different location and then import it again. Will it merge the VHDs with checkpoints or what is the proper way to get rid of check points without losing the data?

I am using windows Server 2012 R2 stranded in host server (Base SErver). and i create two vm in hyper-v.

Suddenly VM has been stuck any time not specific time.

My VM H/W configuration is

Virtual Processor :- 8

when i checked in event logs they showing me error:-

I am using Windows Server 2019 Core.  When vTPM is enabled on any virtual machine, newly provisioned from scratch or existing, I persistently encounter the error, "'VM' failed to start worker process: The computed authentication tag did not match the input authentication tag. (0xC000A002)".  It's only after vTPM is disabled that I can start the virtual machine without issue.

The VMMS service has been restarted throughout various tests without success.

Issue occurs whether VM is started using Windows Admin Center or PowerShell.

What can I do to get this resolved?

VM Multiple Checkpoints Created with no Corresponding avhdx files

Dear All,

Thank you in advance if are able to help me solve a problem.

I am a total newbee regarding VMs but I am stuck to solve this.

We have a physical machine Windows Server 2016 based which host 2 VMs and 1 is no longer working properly.

After a lack of disk space a local back-up crashed.

Hyper-V apparently have created multiple check-points.

The treeview of my VM shows, 2 Levels with Blue Icon and 4 subsequent non-blue, sorry for the non technical description ;-)

I have only 3 files, 1 .vhdx and 2 .avhdx.

I can set the VM to point to my vhdx file and the inspection goes well.

I have reconnected the avhdx from earliest to latest using both Hyper-V Manager and PowerShell (ignoring Id Mismatch).

Get-VHD command says correct parent-child relationships but says files are not attached.

I can start the VM but it is in initial state without data contained in the checkpoints.

I have tried to delete some checkpoints but with no success.

It's been 2 days and I am running out of ideas, any help would really be much much appreciated.

Warm regards,

Thomas

Hi,

Was wondering if anybody else is having this issue..  I'm on Windows 10 RS5 (1809) and I'm unable to create a new VM and power it up..  It is coming up with the following error:

I came across this issue when trying to get Docker For Windows installed..  So went back to basics and tried to create a basic VM..

I've tried disabling the Hyper-V :

Rebooted and then re-enabling it:

Rebooted, same issue :(

So was wondering if anybody else has had this issue and resolved it?

Thanks
