Hyper-V host and disabling VMQ

Hi,

I have a hyper-V server with different VM’s on it.  After installing and configuring i keep having slow network traffic. In other words all works slow.

After searching the internet i have red that VMQ kan be parralizing for network traffic. Altough i have disabled all VMQ options on my networkadapters, i still have the issue.

So i started digging deeper.  I found a Powershell command to check if this is realy the case. Output is this :

Get-VMNetworkAdapter -ComputerName PROLIANTDL380 -VMname * | Select VMName, VMQweight

I have red that is should be 0 ,  i don’t know what 100 means ?

So the command to display the settings i did found (see above)

I can’t seem to find the powershell command to set VMQ to 0 (if this is needed ofcourse, and would have impact on my network traffic)

Thanks,

Extra info, these are my network adapters of my VM host :

Are all Hyper-V VM connections done through some type of RDP?

I have a Hyper-V VM setup on my desktop system. This VM is running a Shared PC setup and it is configured to not allow remote connections. I thought this wouldn't be an issue since I am trying to access it directly via the host machine, not through any sort of RDP client, however whenever I try to login it always says that Remote Desktop connections are not permitted.

Does this mean that even when connecting to a VM hosted on the same machine, that the connection is still technically running through some type of RDP?

Hyper-V, How to send requests between client virtual machine?

I have two virtual machines A, and B in my hyper-v management panel. B is cloned from A. And let says A has internal ip: 172.31.104.26 and B has Ip address 172.31.104.27. They both binding some web application on their 80 port.

  1. If I request "localhost/mypage" on A will showing a page contains "I am Page A", and I request "localhost/mypage" on B will showing "I am Page B"
  2. If I request "172.31.104.26/mypage" from host machine will showing "I am Page A" and request "172.31.104.27/mypage" will showing "I am Page B"
  3. However, If I request "172.31.104.27/mypage" from Machine A I will be redirected to "localhost/mypage" and showing "I am page A". Here, I am expected the page will show "I am page B"

Some one know how to properly configure that and the machine A can request to machine B?

Thanks

Hyper-V Manager not able to connect the Local Server

$

Dear Experts...

Greetings !!!

1. Issue Description:
Hyper-V Manager not able to connect the Local Server – Shows connecting to Virtual Machine Manager Service state and did not connect. Hyper-V Host shows Host Not Responding in the SCVMM console
Due to which VDIs were not launching to newly connecting users as just disappearing

2. Temporary Fix:
If we restart the server, the issue will be resolved but the current active users gets impacted.
Need to power on all the VDIs and ensured all got registered state
And also the same issue keep on re-occurring frequently and affecting production users

3. Troubleshooting Steps Taken:
We tried to restart the service SCVMM and WS-Remote Management service which got restarted. But still the issue persists.
When we restart the WMI Service, one of its dependent service Hyper-V Virtual Machine Manager (vmms.exe) goes to stopping state and neither stopped nor restarted.
Tried to kill the vmms.exe process from task manager and via command prompt using the commands but it never destroyed.
It says cannot stop the Virtual machine manager service, already another running instance exists, access denied (when kills process from task manager), etc.
Until the server reboot the issue will not be resolved.

Thanks in Advance ...

Availability of Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2019

Dear Microsoft!

On https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-hyper-v-server-2019 you link the hyper v core server setup. However, it only leads to https://cloudblogs.microsoft.com/windowsserver/2018/11/13/update-on-windows-server-2019-availability/ and there is no download available.

When are you planning to make it available?

By the way: The download that was briefly online https://software-download.microsoft.com/download/pr/17763.1.180914-1434.rs5_release_SERVERHYPERCORE_OEM_X64FRE_EN-US.ISO is barely usable for 2 reasons:

A after installing it and activating Remote desktop, the server does not start to listen on port 3389. No RDP possible!

B Trying to do an in-place upgrade from Hyper-V Server 2016 leads to an error: "The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during SET_Product_Key operation"

Cluster HyperV - Windows 2016 - VM Network issue

I have a cluster hyper V in Windows 2016 .  In this cluster I have around 34 VM separate on two nodes

I have two nodes hyperv1 and hyperv2

One VM on hyperv1 can ping all VM on the same host and can ping the host hyperv1.  But this VM cannot ping all other VM's on the other host hyperv2 and cannot ping hyperv2

This VM cannot ping the gateway also.  I cannot ping this VM from my PC .

Secondly I just create two new VM  but those VM cannot ping nothing . Those VM cannot ping the gateway  , all the VM and the hosts hyperv2 and hyperv2

Can you help me

.VMCX files grow in size and prevent Live Migration working (Server 2016)

We have an issue whereby the .VMCX files for our production VMs have steadily grown in size (from a start point of less than 100KB up to 20MBcurrently!).

This is preventing Live Migration from functioning, and also introducing long delays when attempting to edit the virtual machines.

I have spoken with someone else who has had the same issue, and they tracked it down to being related to having the machines checkpointed regularly - each time the VM is checkpointed the .VMCX file grows a little larger (and doesn't shrink when the check point is removed).

Is there a way to "repair" the .VMCX file?

All VMs are Server 2016, running on a Server 2016 Storage Spaces Direct cluster.

tempory copy VM files, reconfig RAID, and put back the VM files

Hi,

I tought i had a simple question, but the internet is not quiet clear about this.

Since i have perfomance issues i want to reconfigure a logical drive (where my VM's are stored).  The drive where my VM's are stored is a RAID6 drive. Apparantly this is not fast enough for an SQL applcation.  So i want to Reconfigure/Rebuild that drive.

Plan of attack :

Since this is a small copmany i can do a full stop. My way of work would be. Shutdown all VM's. Copy everything that is on my D;\ drive to an external device. Start Smart Storage Administrator. Delete the second logical drive. Make a new logical RAID1+0 drive. Copy everything back from my extranl device to my new drive. And startup my VM's

Question :

Will this work ? Is this "best-practice" ? And will my VM's start with no problem ?

Possible Use Specific DHCP Server for Hyper-V VMs Only Although On Common Subnet?

Hey Guys -

I'm trying to see if its possible to configure all Hyper-V VMs on a host to use DHCP from a DC (also a VM) and all external / non-VM devices use the router for DHCP.  Details are below...

I've got a home lab which includes a large variety of devices on a single subnet.  One of the systems is a Hyper-V server which includes a few VMs on their own domain for SCCM testing including its domain controller.  These VMs are also on the same subnet as all other devices.

The Issue / Why

Some of my testing requires imaging new VMs using SCCM's OSD where I boot a VM with blank HDD to media to start.  In order for domain joining and such to work correctly, this requires that the VM receive only the DNS address of the DC.  Therefore, I was hoping to find a way to get only the Hyper-V VMs to use DHCP from the DC VM and have all other (non-VM) devices use my router.

Below is what I've tried, considered, please a few other notes:

  • I realize that having the VMs on a separate subnet would simply this as I used to have it set up that way and had internet routed via the DC VM with 2 NICs.  However, I sometimes test hardware with SCCM and couldn't get it to talk to systems in the virtual subnet so had to go to everything on same subnet
  • Within the router's DHCP, I tried adding the DC's DNS IP to be assigned ahead of the router's DNS.  This applied correctly to the clients, but unfortunately still had the issue as I was only able to join the domain on the clients when the DC's DNS is the only IP listed
  • The router is a Linksys 1900ACS running the latest LEDE (OpenWRT)
  • The Hyper-V host is a Windows 10 1809 system and all server VMs are 2016
  • If possible to configure a Hyper-V switch for DHCP, yet not when hosted by Windows 10, does Windows Server has capability or will VMM be required?

VMs will get stuck stopping and unable to migrate servers from that host

We've implemented a 4 server failover cluster with Windows 2016 datacenter. But 3 times now over the last 6 months or so we've had the same incident. The VMs on one host will get stuck in a stopping state when they're shutdown. We'll also be unable to migrate servers from or to that host. We're also unable to drain that host via the Failover Cluster.

In the Event Viewer under Hyper-V-VMMS Admin we'll see events 19060 for the VMs that are stuck:

'VM' failed to perform the 'Unregister Virtual Machine Configuration' operation. The virtual machine is currently performing the following operation: 'Turning Off'. (Virtual machine ID IDGUID)

In the Failover Cluster Manager cluster events, we'll see events 1205, 1254 and 1069 for the VMs.

To resolve we have to shutdown the host, which gets stuck as it tries to drain its roles to the hosts but can't, so we end up forcibly powering off the host.

While it is stuck I've tried to forcibly shutdown the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service, but it gets stuck completely. This is the same for trying to do it for the affected VM processes. We also see host status warnings in SCVMM, generally saying the host isn't responding.

I'm looking at logging a case for it now, but previously I've updated all of the hosts in the cluster to the latest updates (about a month ago). They also have ADDS roles on them (not setup) due to the Host Guardian role, but I've been removing it seeing as we've not used Host Guardian yet.

Has anyone out there experience similar issues and been able to resolve it?

Windows Server 2019 Hyper-V "Phantom" VM, locked VMCX and VMRS files, "Virtual Machine Cache"

Hello!

I have a customer who is running Windows Server 2019 Hyper-V.  There is a folder which has <GUID>.vmcx and <GUID>.vmrs files which I can't delete because it's in use.  This GUID doesn't show up in "get-vm | ft -property vmid, vmname" so I know that it's not a GUID for a valid VM.  And while this GUID does show up in "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V\Virtual Machines Cache" I can't delete it from there, either - it's in use.

So does anyone know how I can delete this "phantom" GUID VM so I can delete my folder which has the .vmcx and .vmrs files in it?  Especially if it doesn't involving taking Hyper-V Down?

Thanks!  Dave

How to connect a 2016 Hyper-V VM to multiple vLANs via a single physical NIC

$

A physical switch is configured with four tagged vLANs on a single port.

The single physical switch port is connected to a physical box with a single physical NIC.

The box is running Hyper-V Core 2016.

A single vSwitch (External) uses that single physical NIC.

A single VM running Server 2016 Standard is using that vSwitch.

I want that VM to be able to communicate with those 4 vLANs.

I've seen a thousand and one ways described but none exactly what I want.

A little help?

Hyper-V Virtual Switch Causing 20% Usage Of CPU For System Interrupts

$

Every time I create a virtual switch in Hyper-V it causes a 20% increase in CPU from System Interrupts. I know it is the virtual switch because I have tried it a few times now and every time I create the new virtual switch then I get the above problem.

I have windows 10 pro, which is kept updated on a regular basis. I just follow the normal (default) steps to create the virtual switch:

  1. click on virtual switch manager, create virtual switch(external)
  2. add a name to the virtual switch
  3. External network checked with my laptops Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG Wireless Network Adapter, Allow management operating system to share this network adapter, checked.
  4. Then I click apply.
  5. Then in the virtual machine I go to settings and make sure it is using this virtual switch.

I would be extremely grateful if someone would be so kind as to help me figure out how to resolve the problem of this causing  a 20% increase in CPU from System Interrupts.
