Hyper-V host and disabling VMQ

$

Hi,

I have a hyper-V server with different VM’s on it.  After installing and configuring i keep having slow network traffic. In other words all works slow.

After searching the internet i have red that VMQ kan be parralizing for network traffic. Altough i have disabled all VMQ options on my networkadapters, i still have the issue.

So i started digging deeper.  I found a Powershell command to check if this is realy the case. Output is this :

Get-VMNetworkAdapter -ComputerName PROLIANTDL380 -VMname * | Select VMName, VMQweight

I have red that is should be 0 ,  i don’t know what 100 means ?

So the command to display the settings i did found (see above)

I can’t seem to find the powershell command to set VMQ to 0 (if this is needed ofcourse, and would have impact on my network traffic)

Thanks,

Extra info, these are my network adapters of my VM host :

Hyper-V Virtual Switch Causing 20% Usage Of CPU For System Interrupts

Every time I create a virtual switch in Hyper-V it causes a 20% increase in CPU from System Interrupts. I know it is the virtual switch because I have tried it a few times now and every time I create the new virtual switch then I get the above problem.

I have windows 10 pro, which is kept updated on a regular basis. I just follow the normal (default) steps to create the virtual switch:

  1. click on virtual switch manager, create virtual switch(external)
  2. add a name to the virtual switch
  3. External network checked with my laptops Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG Wireless Network Adapter, Allow management operating system to share this network adapter, checked.
  4. Then I click apply.
  5. Then in the virtual machine I go to settings and make sure it is using this virtual switch.

I would be extremely grateful if someone would be so kind as to help me figure out how to resolve the problem of this causing  a 20% increase in CPU from System Interrupts.

Cluster Network Communication

We have a 3 node Hyper-V cluster running Windows Server 2016 Datacenter connecting to CSV storage on our SAN via Fibre Channel.

I have a team of 2, 10Gb NICs for the Trunked ports that the VMs use along with a 1 Gb NIC team for the OS and another 10GB Team for Live Migration.

I also have a two other networks, intended for Cluster Management.  One is on a 100 Mb switch and the other on a 1 Gb switch in an effort to ensure the most paths available to ensure that heartbeat communication continues between the cluster nodes in the event something happens.  The 100 Mb NIC is on a different subnet than the 1 Gb NIC as well.  Below I have listed networks in the failover cluster manager.  I have set things up based on the following guidance: Designating a Preferred Network for Cluster Shared Volumes Communication  Should I put the 2 Clust_Mgmt networks on the same subnet and create another team for them? What is the optimal configuration I should set my networks up as, with a goal of ensuring the most robust heartbeat communication between nodes of the cluster?

VMConnect without having the HyperV Administrator Role

Hey

We have a few VMs that the business needs console access to because of a legacy application. We use VMM in HQ so that's not a problem and we can delegate only console access. However, we have a few remote sites which are not in the VMM. I know that console access is possible with VMConnect, but then I would have to add them to the HyperV Administrator group which gives them access to all VMs on the host.

However, I think I read somewhere that in HyperV2019, it would be possible to get console access if they are admin on the VM, without being part of the HyperV admin group. But I can't remember where I read about this.

Has anyone heard about this or was I just dreaming?

Can you store an deleted VM in hyperv if you have a snap?

We have a hyper-v server and am wondering if the VM is deleted accidentally if a snap made before the deletion will it restore the VM ?

Hyper-V Manager not able to connect the Local Server

$

Dear Experts...

Greetings !!!

1. Issue Description:
Hyper-V Manager not able to connect the Local Server – Shows connecting to Virtual Machine Manager Service state and did not connect. Hyper-V Host shows Host Not Responding in the SCVMM console
Due to which VDIs were not launching to newly connecting users as just disappearing

2. Temporary Fix:
If we restart the server, the issue will be resolved but the current active users gets impacted.
Need to power on all the VDIs and ensured all got registered state
And also the same issue keep on re-occurring frequently and affecting production users

3. Troubleshooting Steps Taken:
We tried to restart the service SCVMM and WS-Remote Management service which got restarted. But still the issue persists.
When we restart the WMI Service, one of its dependent service Hyper-V Virtual Machine Manager (vmms.exe) goes to stopping state and neither stopped nor restarted.
Tried to kill the vmms.exe process from task manager and via command prompt using the commands but it never destroyed.
It says cannot stop the Virtual machine manager service, already another running instance exists, access denied (when kills process from task manager), etc.
Until the server reboot the issue will not be resolved.

Thanks in Advance ...

How to Install Guest OS from USB

$

I need to install an operating system onto a Hyper-V virtual machine via a bootable USB flash drive.  I am not using an ISO file.  It has to be from this bootable USB flash drive.  I am using a product called SHB (Secure Host Baseline).  The project I am working with at my company requires this setup to install this pre-configured version of Windows 10 (SHB) onto virtual machines.

So far I am not finding any info out there on how to accomplish this task.  I could really use some guidance on this subject.  Essentially, I want Hyper-V to boot from the USB flash drive at the initial startup.  I have selected the option to "install OS later" so that I can install this specific version of Windows 10.

Hyper-V VM crashing with Kernel-Power Critical logs in Event Viewer

$

I am stumped here.

We have a Windows Server 2016 Datacenter Host, Hyper-V role, 8 Virtual Machines (all same OS as host).

One of these Virtual Machines is a Terminal Server for a number of users inside and outside the LAN. I'll call it TS-SERVER. TS-SERVER randomly reboots a number of times a week. It always logs Event 41, Kernel-Power, but I cannot find the underlying reason. Obviously this is a critical issue for us since 5-10 users can be logged into this VM at any given time, all of them losing any unsaved work every time it happens.

I've browsed the event logs surrounding the times of the reboots, but I can't seem to pinpoint any related events.  No Bugcheck logged either.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you

Hyper-V 2019 - Guest VM's shutdown unexpectedly

$

Hi,

Since upgrading my Hyper-V servers to Windows Server 2019, including KB4471332 from last night, my guest VM's do not power down on restart of the 2019 host.

I can confirm integration components are as up to date as possible, and each guest is configured to shutdown when the host restarts.

Each guest gets the "Why did I shutdown unexpectedly message".

The even viewer yields the following all within 30 seconds of restarting the host:

Shut down physical computer. Stopping/saving all virtual machines...

'ADFS' failed to perform the 'Shutting Down' operation. The virtual machine is currently performing the following operation: 'Shutting Down'. (Virtual machine ID 0CFDF648-EE9D-4141-9EBD-9A6D911C3442)
'ADFS' failed to shut down. (Virtual machine ID 0CFDF648-EE9D-4141-9EBD-9A6D911C3442)

The Update Orchestrator Service service terminated with the following error:
This operation returned because the timeout period expired.

Failed to restore configuration for port 59229EE2-C880-4BF2-9849-89A21EC17772 (Friendly Name: ) on switch 300C0E17-E123-4182-BE62-AAD1860BE841 (Friendly Name: ), status = Object Name not found..

Everything is configured as it was on the 2016 Hyper-V host.

The message ADFS failed to shut down because it is shutting down seems terribly odd to me.  Of course its shutting down, just need the host to wait. (Yes the registry is set to 120 as the default time for the host....)

Fairly simple to recreate....just spin up a 2019 server, install Hyper-V role, throw in a VM and test.

Any help would be appreciated, but my money is on it being another bug.

Error trying to edit Virtual Disk

$

I am trying to convert a .vhdx file to .vhd, but whichever method i use (either Powershell or the Edit Disk option in Hyper-V) it fails with a generic error.

Through trial and error, I found it works if i OMIT the option to convert to "Fixed Disk" and leave it as a "Dynamically Expanding Disk". However I need to convert this VHD to Fixed Disk as it is required for Azure.

As the error is so generic, I can't determine what the problem is.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

TIA

hyper-v virtual machine management in status stopping

Hello,

I had a problem with one vm showing status backing up.

I read on TechNet that restarting the hyper-v virtual machine management service would solve the problem.

I have tried to shutdown the service but it now says status stopping...

How long time does it take to shutdown the service? Is there anything I can do to hurry it up?

ps. I have production vm running on the host that I can't take down...

Possible Use Specific DHCP Server for Hyper-V VMs Only Although On Common Subnet?

$

Hey Guys -

I'm trying to see if its possible to configure all Hyper-V VMs on a host to use DHCP from a DC (also a VM) and all external / non-VM devices use the router for DHCP.  Details are below...

I've got a home lab which includes a large variety of devices on a single subnet.  One of the systems is a Hyper-V server which includes a few VMs on their own domain for SCCM testing including its domain controller.  These VMs are also on the same subnet as all other devices.

The Issue / Why

Some of my testing requires imaging new VMs using SCCM's OSD where I boot a VM with blank HDD to media to start.  In order for domain joining and such to work correctly, this requires that the VM receive only the DNS address of the DC.  Therefore, I was hoping to find a way to get only the Hyper-V VMs to use DHCP from the DC VM and have all other (non-VM) devices use my router.

Below is what I've tried, considered, please a few other notes:

  • I realize that having the VMs on a separate subnet would simply this as I used to have it set up that way and had internet routed via the DC VM with 2 NICs.  However, I sometimes test hardware with SCCM and couldn't get it to talk to systems in the virtual subnet so had to go to everything on same subnet
  • Within the router's DHCP, I tried adding the DC's DNS IP to be assigned ahead of the router's DNS.  This applied correctly to the clients, but unfortunately still had the issue as I was only able to join the domain on the clients when the DC's DNS is the only IP listed
  • The router is a Linksys 1900ACS running the latest LEDE (OpenWRT)
  • The Hyper-V host is a Windows 10 1809 system and all server VMs are 2016
  • If possible to configure a Hyper-V switch for DHCP, yet not when hosted by Windows 10, does Windows Server has capability or will VMM be required?

This VM cannot ping the gateway also.  I cannot ping this VM from my PC .

Secondly I just create two new VM  but those VM cannot ping nothing . Those VM cannot ping the gateway  , all the VM and the hosts hyperv2 and hyperv2
