Hello,<o:p></o:p>

We had experienced a virtual machine crash, and the virtual machine could no longer boot.<o:p></o:p>

Host:  Windows Server 2012 (Hyper-V host)<o:p></o:p>

Guest VM:  Windows Server 2012<o:p></o:p>

I then made a copy of the virtual machine and configuration to attempt recovery from a Windows Server 2016 for recovery.<o:p></o:p>

I tried to use the Inspect Disk function on the .AVHDX file, which then it asks to Inspect Parent disk.  Once I try to inspect the parent disk, the same error occurs where it says the parent .VHDX is corrupt.<o:p></o:p>

“An error occurred when attempting to retrieve the virtual hard disk<o:p></o:p>

Failed to get the disk information.<o:p></o:p>

An unexpected error occurred: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. (0x80070570).<o:p></o:p>

Failed to get the disk information.<o:p></o:p>

The Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service encountered an unexpected error: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. (0x80070570).”<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>

EventID 27000 is logged in the Hyper-V VMMS storage log with the following error:<o:p></o:p>

Failed to open attachment 'E:\Hyper-V\virtualboot\VM_Disk_0_HD_E6701573-EB9F-4131-AC77-89C05EC878AC.vhdx'. Error: 'The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.'.<o:p></o:p>

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Hyper-V Integrated Time Synchronization Service with NTP?

$

Hello there!

I've heard various debates on this but nothing current and no real good sources for reasoning. It would be good to find the current standing of this in 2019:

What is the ideal configuration of the Hyper-V Integrated Time Synchronization service in an environment where NTP is also used? For example, let's say there are a 4-6 VMs acting as NTP servers for other VMs on a network (please don't instead focus that it isn't a 'best practice' configuration -- that is off topic). Will the two time services interact with each other? Should Hyper-V Time Sync be disabled on the client VMs and/or the VMs running NTP services?

Thanks in advance!

Extremely high IO usage on replication

Hello,

we have a Dell R730XD server that until last weekend run with Windows Server 2012. That server has dual Xeon CPUs and 256 GB RAM, RAID 10 of SAS disks and another one of SSD disks.

This server has 35 VMs and it did not show any performance issues. 11 of those VMs have replication enabled, and that also worked fine.

Now we have this server running Windows Server 2016, it has all updates and drivers installed, and without any other change the same VMs on the same hardware cant have replication enabled because the IO usage is extremely high. The IO its higher before the replication actually begins, when its creating a Reference Point.

The IO usage gets so high that event the SSD RAID 10 gets killed by it. This behaivior cant the normal, those same machines had replication without any issues with Windows 2012. I searched on the forum and uninstalled Windows Defender, some said that it can cause this kind of issued, but there was no luck.

Does anyone experience this issue? Any ideas are welcome!

Best regards,

Juan.

Licensing Windows 2016 VM under Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V

We have a Hyper-V cluster running with Windows Server 2012 R2 which is currently licensed with Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Edition.

As per current requirement, we are planning to build Windows 2016 VM under Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster which is fully supported as guest OS.

Would like to know, if there will be any licensing constraint of deploying a Windows 2016 VM under Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster? If yes, how can it be mitigated?

HyperV with SMB3 and Dell Unity

Hi,

we have a 4node HyperV cluster with Dell Poweredge Servers in our data center.

Today the VMs are stored on a SOFS Server with SMB3 on SAS HDDs.

We are now in evaluation of a Dell Unity All Flash System, and wonder how it works with a HyperV Cluster and SMB.

I have created a NAS Server on the Unity and a file share.

This share is accessible from all HyperV Servers and it seems to work so far.

I can move the machines without interruption between the Server, but there is one strange Thing.

If I change something in the config of a VM, the config is broken and the VM will not start anymore.

Does anybody what to do in such a Case?

Regards

Florian

Hi, Could any tell me how can i connect my tape drive directly into hyper-v VM?

Can I use the VHD file created by Windows Backup with Hyper-V

$

I'm implementing a new backup strategy on my Windows 2008 (standard) server, and I'd love to be able to use Hyper-V to test my backups. I noticed that it creates VHD files, so my question is can I simply mount the vhd file in Hyper-V and use it to run a virtual machine or do I have to create a separate VHD file and restore the backup to that?

I've done a bunch of searching, and I'm not seeing the answer. Any help appreciated!

When i delete a checkpoint, virtual server crashed and also the host crashed

Hello

I have a server 2012 R2 host with hyper-v.

In the hyper-v i have 1 virtual machine that is 1.6 TB in a SSD disk of 2TB (1.81 TB) which left me with 168GB available.

i did checkpoint to the virtual machine, and the checkpoint growth a lot. So from 168 GB free space, it turned to 40 GB free space. i then  , wanted to remove the checkpoint. and the minute i deleted the checkpoint, the virtual server crashed and so the host was also crashed. when the host turn on and start up, i got blue screens and crashed again. then i got heart attack, cause its a production server... after i myself recoverd , i try to start up with Last Known good configuration, and somehow a miracale happend and the server turn on and startup correctly. now again i have 168 GB free space. and no checkpoints of course.

After a few days, i tried to install backup software, which did somekind of snapshot before the backup started, and the server crashed again with blue screens. again i started the server with Last known good configuration and now it's fine.

My question is why the checkpoint get the server crashed ? is it because of low disk space ? maybe hard disk fault ?

I also can tell that in the event viewer i see sometimes (every couple of days) some disk warning - The IO operation at logical block address 0x1b241d60 for Disk 0 (PDO name: \Device\Ide\IdeDeviceP0T0L0-0) was retried.

 Please assist.

New host lost internet access - VM on host do have access.

Hi

Starting up with Hyper-V I made a image of my server.

I then activated Hyper-V on the server.
(The server had 2 external IP adresses).

I then removed one of these IPs from the host NIC.
I started up the VM and gave it the removed IP.

Now the VM does respond to the IP and works as expected. It can be reached from outside.
I can also ping the host IP from outside, but the host does not have Internet access.

ipconfig /all show the external IP as (Duplicate) and 169.254.190.177 as (Perferred) on the same Hyper-V Virtual Ethernet Adapter NIC. In the NIC settin for IP4 I only see the external IP.

How do I get the host to respond on the external IP?

2012 R2 Guest, Disk issues on one Host to another

Hello,

We've experienced a bit of an issue with our setup which I'm hitting a blank at. Any suggestions on what could be causing this would be great.

What's our Setup?

We have a 3 node Hyper-V cluster, all running Windows Server 2012 R2.

They share a Dell EqualLogic PS4100X hosting the single CSV.

All hosts are matching Windows Updates and use Sophos Cloud as the AV (C:\ClusterStorage, vmms.exe and vmwp.exe set as Exceptions)

We use a Remote Desktop Service solution with thin clients for our end users, they share 3 Remote Desktop Session hosts which are shared over all three Hyper-V Hosts and 1 Gateway Server hosting everything connection-wise and Remote Desktop User Profile Disks.

What's our Problem?

Roughly two weeks ago a disk failed in the SAN, causing a rebuild onto one of the host-spares.

At the point of the Failure - RDSGateway (RD Gateway server and User Profile Disk host) - was running on VMHost1. On this day all users of RDS was experiencing slowness issues (after the point of failure, it was running perfectly fine beforehand). We looking into the Guest and noticed disk queue lengths through the roof for the User Profile Disk store - where obviously all AppData, etc lives for all users using RDS.

We put this down to "The array was in the process of rebuilding and causing the slowness issue whilst it rebuilt" however, the issue continued past the point of rebuild - so the disk array is now healthy, all other VM's have no issues however RDSGateway, running on VMHost1 will choke up.

How do we get this working?

We Live-Migrate the Guest "RDSGateway" from VMHost1 to VMHost2, and the issue with Disk lifts and immediately responds without issue. All users immediately return to normal operation and minimal latency and disk queue lengths return back below 1, hovering around 0.2 to 0.3 normally (when running on VMHost1, this sits around 15.0- 30.0).

What have I tried?

I've checked, "Get-ClusterSharedVolumeState" the CSV has direct communication with the SAN over all Hosts.

All hosts are using the provided Dell MPIO and all report multiple paths, I've confirmed Jumbo Frames are used across the board. Flow-Control is also in operation.

Windows Updates match across all hosts.

Correct Exceptions in place for RDSGateway (D:\UserProfileDisks) to stop the scanning of UPD's. (Sophos AV)

Reading; https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions//dn567657%28v%3dvs.85%29, I've turned off the IO Load Balancer on VMHost1 by setting the registry key "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\StorVsp\IOBalance_Enabled (REG_DWORD)" to 0. I then rebooted the Host, Shutdown RDSGateway, quick moved to VMHost1 and booted once more.

I simply see no differences between the three hosts, and I'm simply stuck as to what to try next - getting this running without issue on VMHost1.

Hopefully someone has some ideas?

Kind Regards,

Oliver

Hyper-V replication for a VM-group

$

Hi,

I want to create a guest cluster with a VHD-set. So far no troubles - the guest cluster is up and running.

Now I want to replicate the machines, which cannot be enabled through the GUI. So I created a VM-group through powershell, with the two VMs as members.

Here the problem: when I want to enable the replication through powershell, I get the errormessage, that it cannot find the target, which is a Hyper-V replica broker, running on a secondary cluster. BUT: When I enable replication on a single machine (without guest cluster or vhd-set), the same target can be resolved without any problems.

I found the tip to user the Hyper-V module 1.1 instead of 2.0. The problem with this is, that the Hyper-V powershell module 1.1 does not know VM-groups. So in 2.0 the replication does not work and in 1.1 the VM-group is not known.

What can I do to get this going?

Thanks for your help,

Andreas

Windows Server 2016 guest low performance on 2016 host.

Hello.
I have an issue with low guest VM performance with 2016 server OS
I have a Hyper-V cluster based on Dell PE720 with Xeon E5-2620 CPUs. Both nodes running Windows 2016 Dtc. Host BIOS and drivers updated to last versions.Network adapters VMQ is disabled.
I have migrated there a lot of VMs running Windows and Linux machines from old 2012Rs host. Most ot these machines running under 2012R2. All these machines works properly after migration from 2012R2 host.
When I setup new machine on 2016 Std I've seen completely low performance on programs gui responce and program execution relatively to 2012 machines.
For example: i started to prepare new 2016 based VM for CCM and needed to install Windows ADK first, but ADK install hang for a long time on files download stage, and fail after a few hours of running. Seems on connection timeout.

VM config are: 8 cores, 12Gb of static assigned RAM.
Generation of VM = 2
HV configuration = 8.0
ClusterFunctionalLevel = 9 (2016 native)
Integrations components version: 10.0.14393

I exported this VM for test and run it under another 2016 Host on old Dell R415 with Opteron CPU. And guest runs quiqly as he should. ADK setup utility runs correctly.
For testing i setup second 2016 VM of 1 generation on my R720 host - had the same issue.

Also I have another equal cluster with 2016 Hyper-V host, only difference is Xeon E5-2620 v2 CPUs. There 2016 guset runs normally. All system drivers equal on both hypervisors, There are only CPUs are different.

Please advice what can cause low performance for 2016 machines on my 2016 hypervisor?  Have no ideas at all.

Hyper-V Server 2019 - RDP not working

Hi,

So I am testing with Hyper-V Server 2019, which I deployed to three brand new HP Proliant gen10 machines. I'll test on them for a while before putting them in production. Installation was a breeze, as with Hyper-V 2016. However, I can't seem to enable RDP on Hyper-V Server 2019. When I enable through the menu, it says it's done so, but alas, netstat -a reveals there isn't even a process listenening on port 3389.

I checked the registry, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server is correct. The required services are running. Firewall is completely disabled through netsh for testing. Remote administration is working fine, RDP is not listening at all.

Anyone else ran into this?

Hyper-V / Server 2016 host is crashing when VMs start for first time

Like the title says, We are having an issue with our hyper-v host servers crashing on the initial startup of guest vm's.

Everything works fine during the creation of the guest vm, then when we go to power up the guest vm about 10-20 seconds later the host crashes. Doesn't happen on every vm setup, but quite a few (say 1/3).

I have found examples of others having the same issue or similar. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytP-RfhdBWY  (not my video, but same sort of issue).

I haven't seen anything in event viewer that would indicate a problem with the host. no crash logs are saved when it does crash, just a hard black screen (no BSOD).

Any thing you guys can point me to look for here? I am at a total loss on this.

Thanks,

Why is my vhdx taking up so much space?

I have built a CentOs 7 guest VM in Hyper-V as Gen1 with two drives, both dynamically expanding drives.

I have loaded about 170 GB of data into one of the drives, but on disk on the host, it is taking up 410 GB. What is going on?

This is in the guest:

$ df -h | grep 'sdb1\|Used'

/dev/sdb1                      504G  168G  311G  36% /var/lib/data

This is from the host:

Hyper-V host and VM sometime stop responding and not coming back until turn it off and back on

Hello,

We have been having this issue for years and have no clue how to solve.

We have several Hyper-V hosts (Physical HP servers running Windows server 2012 R2 ) on premises and have around 2-4VMs sitting on each host server. These host servers and VMs sitting on them sometimes stop working.

the issue is the following:

When the issue happens to host, the host suddenly stops responding (unable to access shared folder, RDP and other services) but still pigable. VMs sitting on the problematic host is still functioning like normal.

When the issue happens to VMs, the VM suddenly stops responding (unable to access shared folder, RDP and other services) but still pingable.

When the issue happens to VMs, I still can see "Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to sign in" screen from the Hyper-V console but unable to log in,

When this happens, I cannot do anything so I turn the VM off from Hyper-V console (if we shut it down  from Hyper-V console, it will stuck for 10-20 mins and give us an error). when this happens to a host server, I just do a hard shutdown.

any help or information would be really appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Windows Server 2012 - Network Category

$
0
0

After a recent patch and reboot, one of my two physical Hyper-V servers (identical hardware and should be identical configuration) swapped its network connection from a Private network to the Domain network.

This has also caused RDP to stop working from inside the network and a backup service to lose connectivity to other network (non-domain) devices. I haven't rebooted the server (Private network category) yet but I assume once I do it'll alter itself to the domain network. In the past, I've had a problem where the network connection switched to Public from Private (which was easy enough to fix) but never to the Domain.

My first attempt to resolve the problem was what I had done previously, which was set the network connection to Private, but since it was Domain I received:

Set-NetConnectionProfile : Unable to set the NetworkCategory due to one of the following possible reasons: not running
PowerShell elevated; the NetworkCategory cannot be changed from 'DomainAuthenticated'; user initiated changes to Networ
kCategory are being prevented due to the Group Policy setting 'Network List Manager Policies'.

My first Hyper-V server hosts the domain controller, the second Hyper-V server (the one with problems) hosts the secondary domain controller.

I'd like to identify two things:

1. Why one of the two servers (or perhaps both after I reboot the first one) suddenly switched to a Domain network connection from Private and how in general I can prevent problems with this (whether it is going from Private to Public or Private to Domain) after patches/reboots.

2. Why I cannot RDP or my backup service to work on the Domain network connection when the firewall rules should permit it. I've confirmed the server is running the Domain firewall profile and that the inbound rules open up the appropriate ports, but when I do attempt to connect to port 3389 from elsewhere on the network the port seems closed/blocked. The first server (Private network category) passes the TCP connection test to 3389.

Network connections view of both servers. "Network 2" is private, the "FQDN" network is the domain.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Dear all,

I'm running VMs on my Hyper-V 2016 server connected via iSCSI to a Huawei Storage. The problem is that all the times I find the servers (VMs) in StateSaved-Critical. It says that cannot to virtual machine configuration stoarge.

Can someone help me understand what's wrong?

1. I do can read and write to the volume on the storage,

2. previously, there ware a 2-NODEs FailOver Cluster installation on the servers and then rolled back.

Now I facing this errors all the time,
