Server 2012 licensing problem

$

Hi,

I have a few questions related to Server 2012 R2 Licensing.

  1. As I know if we are running Hyper-V on Windows Servers 2012 R2 we can run 2 VM's with the same server license. With my understanding

  One Server 2012 R2 License

  •   1 Physical License
  •   2 VM's on Hyper -V

Is this correct or wrong?

2. If we are planning to implement UAT Servers and Test Server in the production environment how is the licensing process. Do we have to purchase the license for Test servers and UAT? All Servers planning to run on Hyper-V

NIC Appears Disconnected on Hyper-V Start

Hello,

Can anybody guide me as to why this may be happening? Hyper-V 2012R2 with Server 2012 Guest, issue started 2 weeks ago.

When Hyper-V guest starts up, the NIC appears disconnected @ the logon screen, it takes a long time to log in as if there was a DNS problem, but I can access the server remotely.

After logging in, I can ping IP's and resolve DNS names. NSLOOKUP works perfectly fine.

Sometimes, the NIC card looks normal on the icon tray and other times it has the exclamation mark that appears on hosts with no Internet access even though I have ping and resolve DNS names.

The problem is that this is an Exchange server, so it prevents powershell from working properly. I have to restart several times sometimes in order for powershell to work.

I have run SFC Scan, I have reimaged the OS using DISM and I have removed and re-added the Hyper-V NIC, I have installed a legacy Hyper-V NIC and I have moved the guest to another Hyper-V host, but issue persists.

Every few days, mail flow and powershell stop working and I believe it's a result of the NIC. Its as if DNS does not work but DNS is in fact workin!

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated..

Server 2016 - Unable to apply checkpoints

$

We have a Server 2016 Hyper-V cluster (fully patched) with which we are experiencing issues applying checkpoints. If we manually create a production or standard checkpoint in Hyper-V manager on 2012R2/Server 2016 VMs we are unable to revert back to it. The error message we get is "An error occured while attempting to apply the checkpoint".

To simplify troubleshooting we have moved a Server 2016 VM out of the cluster and onto local storage, but with the same results. There doesn't appear to be much else to go on in the event viewer. Can anyone suggest a resolution please?

Virtualized Windows 10 workstations becoming unresponsive, requires reset.

I have several Windows 10 virtual machines that are intermittently becoming unresponsive. Our end-users access these machine through Remote Desktop.

I've seen a few threads online pointing specifically to problems with 1703, but all these machines have had the feature update to 1803 and the issue still persists. Looking for some guidance as to where to go from here, there's no indication that I can find that something has gone wrong, other than the machines becoming entirely unresponsive and not accessible through remote desktop, or through Hyper-V manager. The only recourse seems to be to reset the VM and wait for it to happen again, which can happen unprovoked at any time. Any help would be appreciated.

Having a problem to backup Hyper - V files with Windows 2012 R2

Hi Guys,

I can create a back on drive C with no problem.
The VM is on drive E.

This is where the backup does not work and it is stocked on creating shadow copy of volumes.
In Drive C itself (VM) I enabled Shadow copies, but that did not resolve the problem. I never bothered to deal with that before and it used to work.

2 months ago one of the HDs failed and somehow had to restore the VM from a backup. Since that I have that backup problem for the VM. Everything else works fine.

For now I copied the whole Hyper - V folder.

Please let me know how to fix this problem.

Thanks,

Doron

0x80070569 Error When Creating Second Virtual server in Hyper-v 2012

I get this error when I try to create a second VM from Hyper-v Manager on windows 8 / server 2012 / server 2008 R2.

Hyper-v is running on a new install of server 2012 core.

I was able to create the first VM (server 2012 with a GUI) and is running fine.

I have tried adding the local administrator account to the logon as a batch job and doing a gpupdate /force with not luck.

Both the server 2012 core and the server 2012 VM are joined to the same domain.  I am logged into server 2012 and server 2008 R2 as the domain administrator.

Any ideas would help!

Hyper-V-Worker event id 18590

Would like to know the cause and how to solve this issue. Vm rebooted unexpectably and this system should have high availability due to redundant hosts supporting microsoft failover cluster, no cluster events found only Hyper-V-Worker event id 18590 the minute the system rebooted.

Have found no information relevant about this event and have not found either info on this particular vm error codes combination, our virtual machine is rebooting unexpectably with error 41

"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

nothing more.

The host only reports the hyper v worker with following info:

Umerged checkpoint mess - orphaned .avhdx files

$

This is a Server 2016 Hypervisor and single server 2016 guest VM.

It looks like the backup software has been creating checkpoints that have failed to merge for about a week now.  There are multiple .avhdx files for the VM in the file system but the Hyper-V UI shows no checkpoints exist.

In addition the Get-VMSnapshot command in Powershell agrees with the UI - no checkpoints:

However, checking the machine settings in Hyper-V manager, I find that the hard drive is pointing to one of the differencing disks and the message "Edit is not available because checkpoints exist for this virtual machine."

To make matters worse, I have no idea how to do a manual merge for these avhdx files because both the root/parent vhdx and TWO of the child avhdx files show the exact same date modified stamp - the time I shut down the VM last night.  So I am not sure which avhdx is last in the chain.

Hyper-V is currently pointing to the differencing disk ending in B2C2 above. The one ending in CAC5 looks like it was created earlier (base on the .mrt file) but has the same stamp.

Also - at this point in the write-up I restarted the hypervisor, and when it came back up, the virtual machine had disappeared from Hyper-V:

So I went through the process of re-importing and registering in place:

This threw an error saying it failed, but the VM now re-appears in HyperV manager anyway. VERY strange.

I have started the VM again and will disable backup so no more checkpoints are created, but I really need to get this resolved quickly as the disk only has 116 GB of free space remaining and I do not want it to get so full that I cannot merge these checkpoints.

Help!

[Edit] - This post is for some reason being flagged as spam and so some of the embedded images are missing.  I am trying to resolve this so the images can be displayed.

How to use a bootable VHD under Hyper-V

I have some VHDs created from existing bootable Windows 7 to Windows 10 partitions that run smoothly under VirtualBox.

My Question: Is it possible to run these under Hyper-V? Remark: VirtualBox emulates hardware that all runs with standard MS drivers or use  special Oracle drivers (e.g. graphics) added by Vbox GUest additions.

Hello,

I'm trying to livemigrate a 2016 VM with vTPM in a 2016 Cluster without Host Guardian Service.

It is not a shielded VM.

It cancels with the following error:

Live migration of 'Virtual Machine ' failed.

Virtual machine migration operation for '' failed at migration destination ''. (Virtual machine ID 9DB3903D-2C13-40A1-9760-BA2DC3548860)

The version of the device 'Microsoft Virtual TPM Device' of the virtual machine '' is not compatible with device on physical computer ''. (Virtual machine ID 9DB3903D-2C13-40A1-9760-BA2DC3548860)

The key protector for the virtual machine 'Saved State' could not be unwrapped. HostGuardianService returned: Generic failure (0x80041001) A guardian wrapping could not be found in the protector.. Details are included in the HostGuardianService-Client event log. (Virtual machine ID 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000)

Is it impossible to livemigrate a VM with vTPM in a Cluster without HGS?

Thanks & Greetings

Failover Cluster - one of the nodes visited the future...

$

Hello,

Over the last weekend we had an issue with one of our 2012 R2 Hyper-v failover clustered nodes. For no reason that we can ascertain the clock went into the future (2nd Feb 2026 to be precise) On the Monday when we came back in, we restarted the server, it got the correct time via NTP from our PDC and we thought everything would be ok.

Since this happening we have had strange issues with the cluster and roles on some of the nodes just stopping communications.
Nothing recorded in Cluster Events except for loads of events from the future. Right clicking on Cluster Events and 'Reset recent events' does not remove these logs.

Any advice on removing the logs from 2026 would be appreciated.

Also, any suggestions on other issues we should look out for?

Thanks

Mark

Hyper-V 2016: Unable to expand VHDX in windows 2016 cluster and while powering down VM, it gets stuck in stopping state

Hello,

I am experiencing an ongoing issue with Hyper-V 2016, when I try to expand a VHDX via Failover Cluster Manager or Hyper-V Manager the expansion does not complete. Furthermore, when I attempt to stop the virtual machine the machine hangs at stopping and becomes unmanageable, this is happening on Hyper-V 2016 and the virtual machine is running Windows Server 2016

Has anyone else experienced a similar issue with Hyper-V 2016?

Thanks!

Greetings.
Basically making a copy of this thread from another resource, but "when I run the setup wizard after "Making Sure you are ready to install" screen the next screen is empty" (c) Mayank

Did anyone else have the same problem? What's the workaround to this issue? I can't afford complete reinstalling here, since I work remotely.

Live Migration - Failure issues within Hyper-V Cluster

$

Hi All

We have two dell hosts within a cluster I am having massive issues with.

Host01:

OS - Server 2016 DC

Model - Dell PowerEdge R730xd

CPU - Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2650 v3 - Intel64 Family 6 Model 63 Stepping 2

Host02:

OS - Server 2016 DC

Model - Dell PowerEdge R740xd

CPU - Intel(R) Xeon(R) Gold 5115  - Intel64 Family 6 Model 85 Stepping 4

Live migrating from host01 > host02 - flawless.

Migrating from host02 > host01 flags errors all over the place for every VM:

"Live migration of 'Virtual Machine MOD01' failed.

Virtual machine migration operation for 'MOD01' failed at migration destination 'HOST01'. (Virtual machine ID)

The virtual machine 'MOD01' is using processor-specific features not supported on physical computer 'HOST01'. To allow for migration of this virtual machine to physical computers with different processors, modify the virtual machine settings to limit the processor features used by the virtual machine. (Virtual machine ID)"

The compatibility checkbox is very enabled - quick migration (from a started state) won't start the machine at all on host01. Only way I can migrate within this cluster is with the servers offline which isn't especially cluster like and will cause issues during the next CAU update window (yes - this has previously successfully performed CAU just last month!)

I've googled to the extreme and all I can find is "enable the checkbox" which is already enabled. The VM's are in a mixture of Configuration version 5.0 and version 8.0. Previously I was able to migrate majority of servers with only one or two having the error (which were just test machines so shutting them down wasn't a major issue) but now - its every machine on the newer host.

Is anyone able to provide any direction for this one as I am at a complete loss here.

Thanks.

.vhd file corruption

$

I have performed a few steps below and it seems like the .vhd file is corrupted.

  1. When loading the .vhd file in Hyper-V, we got error "the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable";
  2. We tried mount the .vhd file directly to the Hyper-V host, but still got the same error;
  3. With vhdtool, the repair attempt as failed;
  4. Disabling the antivirus service and then re-mount the .vhd file, still got the same error;

May I know if Microsoft provides any support for this? and what normally is the root cause?

Thank you.

corrupt vhd - how to solve

$

Hello everybody!

We got kind of a (huge) problem with a vhd which fails to boot and I hope somebody can help out with some bright ideas :-)

Emvironment: 2008R2 SP1, 2-node Fail over Cluster with less 10 Servers. All System (OS boot) VHDs living on one partition, RAID 10.
Hardware: Intel Modular Server
VM concerned: 2003R2 Standard
Probelm: VM won't start. Gets to the 2003R2 Screen for a few seconds and then goes into a blue screen 0x000000ED.

No hardware changes, but VHD seems to be corrupt. At least copying the file will fail after 1/3 of the process, reporting ether file or disk are faulty.

What happend just before is a failing HDD. This was recognized by the storrage system, disk was marked bad, taken off line, hot spare got activated and rebuilt process completed successfully - just as it should be.

Apparently this 2003R2 VHD (and another less important VHD) got corrrupt by what ever reason.

Now, I would like to find out if:
a) there is any way to get this thing booting up again or
b) there is any chance to somehow extract WSS 2.0 data from this VHD. This VM was hosting the customers SharePoint site and there is no backup.

Any ideas or help would be much apreciated.

Thanks in advance!
Ralf DK
