hyper-v server, vm update's takes too long

$

Hi all

Hardware: Intel server board s3420gp, 8 GB Ram, Intel x3440 CPU, raid0 4 TB, video as intel says 64 mb and only 8 of it to video memory

Software: Hyper-V server 2008 r2 sp1 en, windows 7 sp1 x64 + RSAT

I’m install on my hardware hyper-v server 2008 r2 sp1 en, then do all needed setups and go to my win7 + RSAT and create some windows 2008 r2 sp1 en VM’s.

After I install first VM and add FS role I decided to update it, and it takes 24 hours to do that ….. First it was ok, ~ 20 min to download 75 updates then some time to install, reboot and then I got message “Stage 3 of 3 Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turnoff your computer” like 23 hours, after ~24 VM successful install all updates and works.

I try to install clean windows 2008r2 sp1 en and test updates but same thing, updates take 24+ hours. Update integration services after install VM, still 24+ hours updates.

Install server core and windows 7 all good with updates, go to my local pc and install windows 2008 r2 sp1 en on virtual box, updating it takes 1 hour.

I wandering what’s wrong with hyper-v server and how I can fix that so long update issue ?

Thx for answers.

Monitoring Memory utilization of a virtual machine which have dynamic memory enabled

Monitoring  Memory utilization of a virtual machine in % which have dynamic memory enabled would not yield accurate understanding.
Say for an example a virtual with the following configuration
Startup RAM: 5 Gb
Maximum RAM: 10 Gb
Buffer Size: 20%

In above illustrated case there could be 2 scenarios,
First scenario when memory utilization is under startup RAM
Considering Active memory utilization will be within startup memory and maximum memory visible to Virtual machine would be startup memory. In that 80% memory utilization would be 80% of 5 GB.
Second scenario when memory utilization is above startup RAM
Considering Active memory utilization is above startup memory and maximum memory visible to Virtual machine would be demanded memory. In that 80% memory utilization would be 80% of Demanded memory, that would vary between 5 to 10 Gb.

is it possible check memory utilization in MBs?

Forum FAQ: Error 0x80070005 when exporting Hyper-V VMs over the Network

$
0
0

Symptom

You use Hyper-V on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • In Hyper-V Manager, you try to try to export a virtual machine to a network share.
  • You have the full control permissions on the network share.

In this scenario the export may fail with an error that resembles the following:

An error occurred while attempting to export the virtual machine.

Failed to copy file during export.

Failed to copy file from ‘<source path of VHD file>’ to ‘<network share>’: General access denied error (0x80070005)

Cause

When you export a virtual machine in Hyper-V manager, it is the System account of the Hyper-V host that executes the export. This problem occurs because the Hyper-V host does not have permission on the network share

Resolution

Ensure the permissions allow the Computer account of the Hyper-V host performing the Export to update the shared folder.

Note: While following steps are specific to 2008, the idea is the same for updating the share and NTFS permissions if the share is hosted on other versions of Windows. You can adjust the steps accordingly.

Updating the NTFS level permissions:

1.  On the destination server, Right-click on the shared folder and select Properties.
2.  Select the Security tab.
3.  Click Edit button and click the Add button in the permissions dialog box.
4.  Click Oject Types and select Computers if not already done and click OK.
5.  In the dialog "Enter the object names to select" provide the name of Hyper-V host machine and click Check Names.
6.  With the Hyper-V host machine name select, click Allow by "Full control" and click OK.

Updating the share level permissions:

1.  On the destination server, Right-click on the shared folder and select Properties.
2.  Select the Sharing tab.
3.  Click Advanced Sharing...
4.  On the Advanced Sharing dialog, click Permissions  and then Add.

5. Click Oject Types and select Computers if not already done and click OK.
6.  In the dialog "Enter the object names to select" provide the name of Hyper-V host machine and click
Check Names.
7.  With the Hyper-V host machine name select, click Allow by "Full control" and click OK.

Hyper-V Dynamic memory, Driver Locked

Hello All,

I've been wondering about the following.

I have 2 Dell R910 (Windows Server 2008R2 SP1) machines as my Hyper-V host machines, with around 40-50 VMs running on it. For most of my servers I've enabled dynamic memory, but on some of these machines I've seen the following:

For some reason this machine running Remote Desktop Services (with Web Access) is using around 3.8GB of memory.

Processes list only a fraction of the actual Memory being used.

But RAMmap shows that 2.5GB is being used by Kernel Drivers. From what I've read this might be the balooning effect of the dynamic memory. However, the RAM usage was the same yesterday evening (12h before I took these screenshots), when no one was actually working on this server.

I've seen this happen on multiple of my guest machines, the machines are running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Datacenter Edition.

Can anyone explain to me why it is doing this?

Thank you.

Kind Regards,

Tom

Server 2012 RC - Have To Reboot Before Being Able to Attach DVD Drive to a Different VM: Cannot Create a file when that file already exists?

$

On the physical server everytime I want to attach the DVD drive to a different VM I need to reboot the physical server before it will work.

Each time I release the DVD drive from one client and then attach it to the other but then when I try to start the VM I have just attached it to I get the following error:

The application encountered an error while attempting to change the state of 'VM NAME'.

'VM NAME' failed to start.

Microsoft Emulated IDE controller (Instance ID ...): Failed to Power on with Error 'Cannot create a file when that file already exists.'.

Failed to open attachment 'E:'. Error: 'Cannot create a file when that file already exists.'.

If I restart the physical server and then try to start the VM it starts without any errors. I just don't want to have to keep rebooting the server in order to attach the DVD drive as obviously this makes all the VMs unavailable so the domain controller, DNS and website go down.

Is this a known bug in the Windows Server 2012 RC or is something not configured correctly?

Thanks

Robin

How to "import" differencing VMs on a new Hyper-V server?

$

Hi all,

I just updated to Windows 8 RTM and unfortunately, I forgot to "export" my VMs. Most of my VMs use differencing.

Now when I try to create new VMs and then use the existing .vhd files, it doesn't have the proper configuration. I have solved this before, by combining the .avhd to the vhd files.

Is there any other way to solve this problem? Or do I have to do the merge again?

Thanks!

Cluster Shared Volume does not mount properly after a restart of both nodes?

$

Hardware:

2x Dell PowerEdge R510

1x Dell PowerVault MD3220i

Background:

Servers connected to SAN via ISCSI through 2 host ports each via a Dell PowerConnect Layer 2 switch.

Running two Nodes with Hyper-V Core installs and Failover Feature Enabled.

Validated and setup Failover Cluster for server.

Failover works (IE. VMs will be moved to Node 2 when Node 1 goes offline)

Migrations will work (live, move and quick).

Problem:

When both servers where recently shutdown for power maintenance in the building, after being turned back on both servers failed to mount the Cluster Shared Volume properly.

The Shared Volume is showing Online in the FailOver manager, but in iscsicpl.exe the mount point for the volume is not set to c:\clusterstorage\volume1 but instead it /?/volume/{GUID}/

When trying to direct to c:\clusterstorage\volume1 it is listed but freezes when trying to access it.

If you remove the volume from shared it mounts properly.

TL:DR

Cluster shared volume doesn't mount after simultaneous restart of servers, only show the mount point as /?/volume/{GUID}/ cannot remount as shared.

Hyper-V + NVIDIA = BSOD

Hi,

I have a NVIDIA GT 650M Graphics Card on my notebook and running on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. When I enable the Hyper-V Role, the system reboots with a Blue Screen. The error from the event log is:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x1000007e (0xffffffffc0000096, 0xfffff88006ac43cc, 0xfffff880025d3778, 0xfffff880025d2fd0).

I have:

  • all the latest Windows Update.
  • tried the drivers from Dell (causes SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION, (The bugcheck was: 0x0000003b (0x00000000c0000096, 0xfffff88004207e41, 0xfffff880067718f0, 0x0000000000000000).)
  • tried the latest drivers from NVIDIA
  • tried the beta drivers from NVIDIA
  • tried the KB2551127 hotfix
  • re-installed everything again

and still result in blue screen.

Removing the Hyper-V role will cause the system to boot normally without errors.

There are no options in the BIOS to set for Caching and Shadowing since this is a consumer notebook, the BIOS is pretty much basic.

I thought the Hyper-V with high-end Graphics Card BSOD-ing issue was already solved in SP1, so I just wanted to post this just in case if something has slipped through.

Thanx

Windows Server 2008 Host Activation Errors After Installing Hyper-V RC0

$

Problem:

After installing Hyper-V RC0 via Windows Update, on next boot Windows Server 2008 Standard 64-bit host reports activation error 0xC004E002.

Steps to Reproduce:

1.  Install Windows Server 2008 64-bit Standard (MSDN ISO X14-26714)
2.  Do not enter a license key or activate (default install method for this part number, running in trial mode)
3.  Perform all Windows Updates, including Hyper-V RC0
4.  Add Hyper-V Role and perform initial setup of Hyper-V
(note: the order of steps 3 and 4 can be switched, it makes no difference)

5.  Shut down server
6.  Boot server the next day
7.  When you see Ctrl-Alt-Delete prompt, log in immediately at the console
8.  Receive Activation Error as follows:

----

Windows Activation

An error has occurred

You can also contact Microsoft by phone to help resolve this problem (link to Vista genuine web site)

Code:
0xC004E002

Description:
The Software Licensing Service reported that the license store contains inconsistent data.
----

I have repeated this over several clean installs on two different hardware platforms with different variations of peripherals and drivers (installing drivers, using Windows default drivers, etc.).  All installs runs fine with the version of Hyper-V supplied on the DVD, but as soon as the RC0 update is installed this error occurs.  This can occur whether there are virtual machines configured or not.

The occurence and type of the error seems to be related to how quickly the user attempts the first login at the console.

Workaround:

After receiving the Ctrl-Alt-Delete prompt, wait at least 10 minutes before attempting to log in to the server.  If you receive the error again, reboot and repeat this step (waiting at least 10 minutes before logging in) until a normal log in is achieved.  If normal log in is achieved, the system behaves normally until the next reboot.

Additional errors that may be seen (less common, and they seem to occur randomly instead of the above error):

Hyper-V Replica SAN Aware?

$
0

Is Hyper-V Replica SAN Aware such that the replication traffic can be done at the SAN level (between 2 SAN devices) instead of at the server level?  This would reduce the burden of compression CPU cycles on the servers as well as remove the 5 minute interval issue that Hyper-V replica has?

Which SAN's support this feature?

Degraded perfomance on hosts virtual nic when using nic teaming in Server 2012

$

Hi,

We have two HP ML 350 G6 with HP NC375T running Windows Server 2012 RC. These servers are connected to a D-Link DGS-3120-24TC using LACP on all four ports on each server.

Lets call them Host A and Host B

I've set the Load Balancing to "Address Hash". This works greats before I add the new team to a Hyper-V switch. I get around 300 MiB/s over SMB between the Host A and Host B when copying large files.

When I add the team to a Hyper-V switch and get a virtual NIC instead (running at 10 Gbe) I only get 115 MiB/s between Host A and Host B. So I only get the performance of 1 gbe link.

But here's the twist. I'ts only the virtual NIC on the hosts that has these performance issues. If I copy a file from Host A to a VM running on Host A I get around 400 MiB/s when the traffic never leaves the virtual switch. If I copy a file from Host B to a VM running on Host A I only get 115 MiB/s. When copying between a VM running on Host A to a VM running on Host B i get around 150-190 MiB/s. So this proves that the teams are working under the Hyper-V switch, just not for the hosts virtual NIC.

Any suggestions?

P2V moves system drive to X:

$

I'm trying to p2v a 2008R2 server (from an IBM HS22 with an LSI SAS 3000 series storage controller)

The physical machine has a UEFI 'bios' and, as such, GPT partition table - pretty sure this is signifiant

I've tried a number of methods and tools to p2v (vmware converter, disk2vhd, vhdresize) it and have found the only way to get it to successfully boot in hyper-v (or ESX with an extra import step) was to use p2vLite (http://bizconline.com/en/download_view.asp?id=23)

BUT when it boots the system drive has changed to X: (rather than C:) - which results in a number of issues - when you try to run anything other than cmd.exe or explorer.exe, you get an error "x:\windows\regedit.exe - The specified path does not exist - check the path, and then try again", and even explorer, clicking start >Computer results in "No such interface supported"

next thing i tried was to add a second virtual disk, boot from windows PE, and ghost from the 'p2v'ed' disk to the clean one

Reboot, and shure enough, i have a C: and an X: that are identical, and most software is happy...

remove the p2v'd disk and try to boot - missing winboot.exe

boot PE again, fix with bcdedit, system boots, but we're back to X:

changing the bios boot order always results in the boot drive as X and the other as C

with two drives, i can finally run regedit and try to edit HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices - but it does nothing

so i load the two hives (c:\win\sys32\conf\system and the same on x) and copy all the entries from the MountedDevices reg key

i end up with a BSOD - STOP: 0x000007B (ye olde 'inaccessable boot device')

PE boot again, mount the two system hive, blow away the mounted devices entries and she boots again...

Any ideas how to get the boot drive back to C: ?

VMs intermittently freezes in HyperV under W2K8 R2

$

Hello,

I have recently installed W2K8 R2 and am hosting a couple of VMs. In R2, I
find that these VMs will intermittently freeze for between 3-5 minutes. They
then recover, and I can use them for maybe another 3-10 minutes. Then the
cycle repeats.

These VMs were previously being hosted in HyperV under W2K8 with no
"freezing" issues. Also, while the VMs become "frozen", the host W2K8 R2
environment continues to function normally, i.e. I can copy files, surf the
Internet, etc.

I cannot seem to find any clues in the Event Viewer. Has anyone seen this
behaviour? Can anyone suggest any further steps I can take to troubleshoot
this weird behaviour?

Thanks folks!

Hyper-V data storage on Non-Windows server

$

I have setup a Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V and would like to store my VM's on my NAS, since this should now be a supported scenario.

The network share on my NAS is wideopen permissionwise. I am able to create and store configuration files and vhd's, but when I try to start the VM it fails with "An attempt to initialize VM saved state failed".

Needless to say I have no problems running VM's when I store them locally.

Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Hyper-V VMs issues with windows services

$

Hi All

How are you?

I have serveral VMs on our IBM Blade servers which are Windows 2003 R2 SP2.These server VMs are Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 VMs(Citrix front-end) . I know they are quite old.

The were created as a P2V conversions before I even started working for this organisation.

Since these servers get rebooted daily I noticed there are some problems with some the windows services not starting up at all even though their start-up type is set to automatic.

The services are the:

Citrix Print Manager Service
Windows Time service.

Many times users ring me to tell me there are no printers listed in their session, therefore I have to manually start the Citrix print service.

With the time service I have to first unregister the service (w32tm /unregister), then re-register the service (w32tm /register) and then start the service (net start w32time). But the time the server is rebooted, I have to manually do this every time.

I read somewhere that there could be a problem with the Hyper-V Integration Services not having installed themselves correctly and some article suggests to un-install and re-install these services. I am a bit fearfull of doing this because you lose mouse support and I have read there might be issues with the re-installation erroring and not allowing you to re-install these integrations services.

Has anyone had these problems before or am I the only one?

If there is someone out there that was able to resolve these issues permanently, I would would like to hear from them to find out how they managed to rectify these problems.

Thanks and regards

Ipnotech.

Differencing VHD Eating Disk Space

$

Hi everyone

I adopted a Hyper-V implementation last year and if I'm honest I have not had to do much with it.  I am a novice with Hyper-V and have been trying to swot up on as much info as I can but I don't seem to be able to join the dots.

I have 4 VMs running on a single host. Take away the fact that I don't believe the person who set this up did a very good job at setting up a suitable server and storage solution.

One of the VMs is out Exchange 2010 server with two VHD attached to it. The two disks are listed below as visible from the VM itself:

  • C:\ - 100GB
  • E:\ - 683GB

These two VHDs on the host are taking up much, much more space than that though. They are differencing disks and in total both VHDs are using 1.75 TB of space on my host server!!!!!

I know that both VHDs have been set up as differencing disks. The VHD corresponding to the C drive has a .vhd file and 20 .avhd files - all totalling 117 GB. The VHD corresponding to the E drive has a .vhd file and 8 .avhd files - all totalling 1.65 TB.

Taking the E drive VHD first, how can a 683 GB disks have a VHD file size of more than double that? And what can I do about it? Can these be merged?

I need to do something before it get any more out of hand.

Please can anyone offer me some advice?

Many thanks

David Pearson
