someone please answer this question How do you install a virtual machine on windows Hyper V Server 2012 R2 it is only command line no GUI and for some reason it is not visible to my Hyper V manager on my windows 8.1 Pro OS.  I have already set both IP address on my server to 192.168.0.2 and 0.3.  I have given the Hyper v Server a name but it's still not visible to the Hyper V manager on the computer listed above.  How do I get the server to respond to a ping from another computer on the same network how do I start installing the First VM

Storage migration for virtual machine failed with error 'General access denied error' (0x80070005)

Hi All,

All my VMs were powered off. When I attempted moving the VMs from C drive to D drive on the same server, I faced the access denied issue. There were no issues when I exported the VMs to D drive and then imported them. I even tried adding "Everyone" full control on "D:\Hyper-V", but it's still not working.

Affect of a Hyper Visors Firewall on a VMs Firewall?

$

Hi All,

I have a broad question about the Firewall behaviour on a Hyper-V Hyper Visor.

Does the state of the Hyper Visors Firewall affect the VMs running under it? For example if I have a VM and I enable SNMP traffic on that VMs Firewall will the traffic be allowed through without any alterations to the Hyper Visors Firewall? Or alternatively do I also need to enabled the SNMP Firewall rules on the Hyper Visor as well to ensure that SNMP traffic can get out?

Any help here will be greatly appreciated.

Hyper-V client OS can't find share on Server Host.

I have a Windows 10 host (Host) with working file shares to 'everyone' and working with two other XP OS boxes (Box_A and Box_B) on the network.

I also have an Windows XP instance running on the Host in a Hyper-V virtual OS (Box_V). All the Box_VBox_A, and Box_B instances can see each other's shares and read and copy files to them.

However, Box_V running on the Host can not see the shares on the Host nor the otherway around.

All these can see their own shares.

Would it help to add another network card to the server? How should that be configured?

How To Restore VM With All CheckPoints (no export done)

Hello,

I have the full folders and file schema of an existing virtual machine:

"Virtual Machines" (no files in the Virtual Machines folder. Only a GUID named folder )

"Virtual Hard Disks" (one .vhdx file and multiple .avhdx files)

"Snapshots" (multiple folders (GUID named) with file in them)

Any ideas how to import and have everything in place? I definitely need the whole CheckPoints chain.

Thanks.

Can a cancelled VHD expansion cause data loss?

$

Hi All,

I initiated the expansion of a VHD after unmounting the drive in question from a VM (shutting down the VM was required). I then attempted to start the VM again however when I found that it was going to take too long to start I made the decision to cancel the VHD expansion. The expansion was going to take upward of an hour and I had to get the VM in question up and running within 15 minutes.

(when I clicked on 'Cancel' within the 'Expand Drive' progress dialog box there was no warning that doing so would cause adverse affects)

Once the 'Expand Drive' dialog box had gone I mounted the VHD again (which I had earlier tried to expand) and successfully started up the VM in a timely fashion.

I didn't give the situation any further thought until a colleague came to me and mentioned that data loss had occurred on our File Server. The data loss was from the VHD that I had tried to expand.

I have now been asked to explain what caused the data loss, and I want some honest opinions on what pressing the 'Cancel' button in the midst of an attempted VHD expansion will do.

Did my pressing the cancel button trigger the data loss or should I be looking at other potential candidates such as the health of the RAID array?

Any help or opinions here will be greatly appreciated.

Application Hyper-VM server has poor performance

We have 3 clients that we setup with almost identical setups. A host with 2 VM's. One VM is our Exchange Server and the other VM is our Application server.

Our Exchange server seems to function properly but our Application servers at all clients suffer from poor performance.

Our AppServer vary in what application are installed. But, Symantec Endpoint Protection and SQL. I feel that there is something configured incorrectly since this is an issue at 3 of clients.

The host and the VM's are sharing the 1 network card that is installed. Not sure if it makes a difference but I'd like to share as much info as possible.

Here are the operating systems for the Host and VM's.

Client 1

Host - Server 2012

VM Exchange - Server 2008r2

VM AppServer - Server 2012

Client 2

Host - Server 2012r2

VM Exchange - Server 2012r2

VM AppServer - Server 2012r2

Client 3

Host - Server 2008r2

VM Exchange - Server 2008r2

VM AppServer - Server 2008r2

Any ideas on where I should start looking?

Guest VM's showing unexpected shutdown when Host is restarted.

When the host is rebooted and I log back in the guest VM's I am greeted with an Unexpected shutdown error.

We have 2 vm's, One is running Server 2012 and the other 2008r2. The host is running Server 2012

In Hyper-V Manager the Automatic Stop action is set to shutdown. In integration Services it shows "all services offered" and all box are checked including "Operating system shutdown".

Because of this issue I manually shutdown the VM's and verify they are off in HV manager before restarting the host. But, this pas weekend there was a power outage which shutdown the host but the VM's did not have sufficient amount of time to shutdown.

Any ideas what the issue could be?

How to segment SCCM 2012 home test lab from home computers, but allow it to access the internet?

$

I am trying to build an SCCM 2012 home test lab and want to know how you all have configured this.

I am not well versed in virtual technologies.

I am going to create a virtual server that SCCM 2012 will be installed on and I will have one or two DPs and 4-6 workstations.

In order for my virtual SCCM Site Server to connect to the Internet, I would assume I would create a virtual NIC that will connect to the physical host OS network and then have another NIC that will be used for the internal network.

This is about as far as my knowledge goes though and I am not even sure if this is a correct assumption.

I just want to make sure that the virtual Domain Controller that I will be setting up that will be running DHCP will not conflict with my Apple Base Station DHCP that serves my personal home devices.

Thank you

Interrupted VM stuck

I was doing updates on my 2012R2 Hyper-V VM and power dropped. When I booted my host PC back up the VM would start and say Hyper-V Updating your system (x%) and get stuck at 5%. I can't get past this and I have no snapshots/backups of the VM. Is there anyway to recover this VM?

IO VERY slow on Hyper-V VM's

Hello, we have a Dell compellent san with 55 disks (7k) and another 55 disks for 15k.  It auto tiers the data based on load (higher IO loads will move to the faster disks).

Our Hyper-V VM's greatly struggle.  I've tried IO benchmarks on many Hyper-V VMs, and the IO score is terrible, even much worse than my single disk desktop computer with 1 5.4k drive.  On the same SAN, speed tests and access times are OK on physically attached servers (non-VM).  We also have 100+ms disk access time at times on VMs.  We are within the limits of our san, according to Dell, we are not overworking it.   Also, we did not have these issues with VMware virtual machines.

This leads me to believe that they Hyper-V layer is greatly slowing down IO.  We have a 10 server 2012 cluster 2012 (non-r2).

Has anyone ever had decent IO benchmarks running 200+ Hyper-V VMs?

I am posting one of my horrendous benchmarks below.  Please do not mention Azure, I do not really want to pay more money to have servers way out on the internet right now (I've heard a little too much sales BS recently) :)

Looking for people with a local hyper-v cluster and san.

DNS Wont Work in VM using GbE adapter

$

I have 2 NICs on my server running Windows 2008 R2. Both work from the server side so I know I have a working connection. I have a VM running Windows Server 2008 R2. I just added a StarTech 10GbE adapter (PEX10000SFP). On the VM, if I select the 1GB line it works fine but if I select the newly added 10GbE as the network, I get no internet on the VM. I can get a DHCP IP address from the router so I know its at least connecting but the DNS fails. The Windows Network Diagnostics shows the DNS server isn't responding. I can ping other IP addresses on the network but NSLookup fails every time. It doesn't matter if I statically set the IP/DNS, it never works. I've tried using the local DNS server, ISP and Google as DNS and it does not work. I can browse to the hosting server's IP address via windows explorer and copy files but any other address, even the ones that can be pinged fails. If I removed the Network Adapter from the VM and add a Legacy Network Adapter and select the 10GbE line as the network, the VM is able to connect to the internet without issue but it shows its running at 100Mbps. This is the same issue for any other VM I run. Any idea what needs to be done to fix it to work normally?

How to enable traffic between client and server on different VLANs?

$

Hi,

I have a Host machine having Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012. The Hyper-v host machine has 2-physical nic cards – em1 and em2. I have created 2 virtual external switches in hyper-v VSWT2(em1) and VSWT3(em2). VSWT2 is the WAN interface and on VSWT3 I have created VM's and have tagged it to VLANs.

Iam using pfsense as a router as a VM in hyper-v. The router VM is configured to use the 2 external switches. And on the pfsense router on the VSWT3 switch - I have created 2 VLANs and have DHCP enabled for each VLAN interface.

In hyper-V I believe trunking is automatically enabled. But I have explicitly enabled it with the below command
>>Get-VMNetworkAdapter -VMName "pfsenseRouter" | Where-Object {$_.MacAddress -eq "XXXXXXXXXXXX"} | Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -Trunk -AllowedVlanIdList "2-150" -NativeVlanId 0

The VMs in each VLAN are able to communicate with each other. But I need to have a client that is in VLAN2 to communicate with a server in VLAN3, how can I go about doing this? Currently Iam ONLY able to ping them but the applications are not able to communicate with each other.

Appreciate any kind of suggestion or help.

Hi,

I have Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 with Hyper-V role installed. I have also virtual servers hosted on it. I need install a CAD software on my virtual server, but it requires licence-HW key which is situated on USB dongle. How can I connect this medium to the virtual machine? I see the USB connected on my hypervisor, but I am not able connect it to the VM. Thanks for suggestions.

How many licenze buy to replicate VM Windows Server 2012 R2 in a other phisical server with Windows Server 2012 R2

Hi,

I have a question to ask if anyone knows answer.
I need to virtualize Windows Server 2012 and then replicate it on another phisical server.

For my needs I had thought to install one server running Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V and create in it a virtual machine with Windows 2012 R2 STD and replicate this VM in another phisical server running Windows 2012 R2.

I want to know how many licenses I need buy to be right with term of agree license, i must have one license for the virtual machine with Windows 2012 R2 Standard (host Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V) and another for the server with windows 2012 R2 Standard (replica)?

I also read that Windows 2012 R2 Standard have 2 virtual machine license, one of these machine once created can be transferred on Hyper-V 2012 R2 and use only one license of Windows 2012 R2 Standard for all?

Thanks in advance.

HI all,

I got an up & down alert from my solarwinds monitoring system - logged in to the hyper-v host & saw the below warning since yesterday

Log Name:      System
Source:        LsaSrv

Computer:      DRVHOST4.mydomain.com
Description:
The program svchost.exe, with the assigned process ID 1308, could not authenticate locally by using the target name HOST/.. The target name used is not valid. A target name should refer to one of the local computer names, for example, the DNS host name.

Trying to understand what has caused this

Anyone on board kindly assist.

Deleting a hyper-V cluster from failed domain and recreating it

$

We had a problem with a virtual DC that rebooted and never came back up we just got a "disk error please insert boot disk". Nothing we did could get it back including copying it mounting etc it was dead.

Given we are a small company it seemed faster to just create a new domain from scratch which we have done and moved everything over with no real problems.

The problem we have is the Cluster was created on the old domain, and is running 10 Virtual servers. (all transferred over)

Everything is working fine but i am getting errors from the cluster mainly DNS that it does not exist in the domain, and i want to move on the create a CSV.

So my long winded questions are these: Is there a way to move the existing cluster to the new domain?

If not how do i go about deleting a cluster with VM's and recreating it? Is there a simple way of just click delete cluster and then re recreate or do i export?

All the VHD's are on a shared Equilogic box.

Unable to remove Hyper-V on Windows 10 64bit

I have this critical issue. I've installed the Hyper-V role on W10 from control panel - turn windows feature on/off.

Now if I remove the check box from Hyper-V I'm asked to reset the PC. I do reset but at 98% of changes I get an error "unable to perform changes, rolling back" (or something similar) and Hyper-V is still there!

I've tried even from safe mode... no result!

All the Hyper-V virtual devices are still there :(

It's super annoying. How can I force a complete removal?
