I have nop problems with adding a switch and servers, but I am not able to brows the hyper-v servers filesystem from my computer with Explorer using\\Hyper-vname\c$  Is it a Firewall rule I need to change? If yes Which one?

VMs on Hyper-V 2012 R2 are shutting down automatically

Hello Guys!

I'm having a huge problem in my Hyper-V 2012 R2 environment. Yesterday, 9 of 40 VMs were shutdown automatically, and so, caused a downtime problem to my customers in the business hours.

I checked in the Event Viewer (Application / System /  Microsoft - Windows - Hyper) of the Host and VM but I couldn't locate any log related to this unexpected shutdown.

It occurred twice yesterday, the first in the morning and the second in the afternoon. I'm afraid that this issue can happen again. I've tried to locate some logs to identify this problem, but no luck here.

My question: Is there any other place where it can help me in this troubleshooting to find the root cause?

Obs: All the VMs are licensed / activated.
Obs2: The VMs are Win 2008 R2 Std

VhdTool or any other tool to create fixed size VHDs faster

Hi Experts,

I tried to convert a dynamic VHD to Fixed size VHD. It is taking very long for Creation/Conversion of VHDs of size 250GB or more.

I tried VhdTool from http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/vhdtool

This tool is creating VHD files very fast.

The above link has been retired now.

Is this tool MS proprietary? Is there any license required for using this Tool?
and can I use this tool in my Hyper-V VM?

Any other tools suggested by Microsoft for Creating/Converting VHDs?

Thanks in advance,

Saleem

Hyper V server 2012 R2 network interface index number mismatch

I have a hyper v server 2012 R2 that has a mismatch on the network adapter index number between the sconfig console and the actual index number.  If i go into the network settings in sconfig i see an index number of 17 for the Hyper-V virtual Ethernet Adapter #2.  But if i select that index sconfig crashes out to a command prompt.  If i use netsh to query the interface the index number is 18.  If i try to use the 18 index number in sconfig then it also crashes out to a command prompt.

I am not sure when this discrepancy occurred.  The server has been running for well over a year and no network changes have been made since initial setup.  I suspect that it happened during an update.

Is there any way to fix this?  would be nice to be able to use sconfig to update static dns servers.  doing it via netsh is a pain.

Stop VM after deployment - SkipInstallVirtualizationGuestServices

Hi Experts,

I am deploying a Custom Linux VM using template.

I have written a powershell script that will get the template and create a new VM from the template using "New-SCVirtualMachine".

But, the VM is started after deployment. I already have the Linux Integration Services installed in my VM. So, I removed "-StartVM" and added "-SkipInstallVirtualizationGuestServices" to avoid guest services installation.

But it is still started in the "Customize Virtual Machine" Process and Guestagent.iso is added to CD of my VM.

Please help in avoiding the VM to start after deployment.

Thanks in advance,

Hi,

How to get information about creation of a virtual machine on a Hyper-v host?

I need: host name, time created, creator user.

I saw in Hyper-V-VMMS but I found info about movements of VM between hosts.

Thank's in advance.

Hyper-V 2012 R2 CSV backup via VSS

Hi,

It it possible to create a shadow of a single CSV volume and then expose it to copy files from, as you can a physical volume? If so, how does one go about this via the command line?

Also, i have read some pretty scary stuff about CSV backup via VSS in the past, but i seem to understand this now resolved with 2012 R2 - is this the case?

Thanks.

Hyper-V Host with a total of 4 NICs - Teaming?

Hello, I have a single Windows 2012 R2 server (Host) that will be running 3 VMs for 15 to 20 users. One VM server will be the main domain controller and the other 2 will be a SQL server and a Remote Desktop server.  I have 2 onboard gigabyte adapters and 2 gigabyte adapters on an add-in card, the 4 adapters are the all the same model, just to give you as much info as possible. I’m reading a ton of articles and it’s making my head spin.  The host server will be doing nothing but running the virtual machines and not connected to any domain.  In these articles they talk about having one NIC for the host to do management and some say that you don’t need to do this and can team all of the adapters and then designate a host adapter. The goal for me is to provide the best configuration for performance and reliability. With the changes to Windows 2012 R2, Hyper-V and NIC teaming I may be getting a little confused in my thought process since I haven’t run through this yet, here is what I’m thinking.

  1. Do I just take all 4 adapters and team them on the host and set the host IP address on the newly created team?
  2. Create a new VM switch and attach it to the teamed adapter.
  3. Create a new VM Network adapter for the DC, SQL and Remote Desktop VM servers with minimum bandwidth weight specified.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated before I start loading up the server.  Thanks Ryan.

Using MobaXTerm to connect to OpenSuse?...

Hi,

Running 2012 R2 Server as my main OS, have OpenSuse 13.1 installed as a Guest and using MobaXTerm to connect.  Only successful connecting with SSH, but not with the VNC.

VNC Settings: IP 192.168.0.100, Port 5901.  When I try to connect and briefly I see the Suse background and then it closes giving me the message "Connection closed".  I can browse the file system using the Windows File Explorer and when I try IE I get this:

I'm assuming this is the same reason why the VNC is closing, but I added MobaXTerm to Windows Firewall for Private and Public access.  Not even successful with TightVNC added:

So what do I need to do now to get this to work for VNC?  Thanks!...

Ghost/Hidden Network Interfaces

Hi guys,
we have a problem with network management in the guest virtual machines with Windows Server 2008. We have created a VM with WinSrv 2008, we have deleted it leaving the vhd because we had to move it in another partition, but when we create a new VM attaching its original vhd WinSrv 2008 shows 3 network interface inside the guest OS (2 of which are hidden and not viewable in the device manager even with the "show hidden device" option) and the device manager create a new network adapter with the name "Microsoft Virtual Machine Bus Network Adapter #3". With a guest VM with WinSrv 2003 the behavior is different and the device manager shows only one interface with the default name "Microsoft Virtual Machine Bus Network Adapter". How can we remove these hidden/ghost interfaces? We hope you can help us quickly because next week this virtual environment should be perfectly working.

Have a nice day.

Hyper-V Windows 2012 r2 Poor network performance

Hi,

Since that I installed Windows 2012 R2 and Hyper-v, I notice that is very slow performing copy operations from the VMs to the physical machine (appears to be lock to 10MB). Firs I though that this issue was only between the VMs and the parent OS, now I realized that when copying between this Hyper-v physical host and another physical host in the same subnet I also get only 10MB of speed.

How do I unlock this 10MB limit??

The switch and all NICs are GIGABIT capable and before using Windows 2012 r2, using the same hardware boxes I was doing 400MB of transfers between physical hosts and VMs??!!

Thank you.

Hyper-v Manager wont start stuck in Backing up state

Our SCVMM lost connection last night and we are unable to get it restarted. The other vm's came up fine but this server has a status of "Backing Up". This is 2012r2. The only option available is to "start" the server. When I try this I get the error:

The Application encountered an error while

attempting to change the state of

'ServerName'.

Any ideas on how to solve this?

Hyper-V Makes my network devices too slow or out of order

Hi
I have a HP DL380G8 Server (32 cpu+ 192GB of RAM)
Windows server 2012 R2 on base and installed 7 Hyper-V machines with windows server 2012 R2 too.
I set all my business on this solution on 7 different Hyper-v servers.
One is AD-DC and DNS and each other server has own tasks.

My problem is after running this solution I have network issues. after about 2 days, some of my other network devices such as Access points stop working!!! or become tooo slow and when I shut down 3-4 of Hyper-V machines (or unplug network cables of server) they start working again (Until plugging cable in).

- I added Hardware of any Hyper-v (4 CPU and 8GB of RAM each one)
- I changed network adapters to Legacy NA
and still problem remains.
Please Help me. I did a huge risk on my job safety by using Hyper-v.

Resource metering problem

Hi guys,

I am using a 3-node WS 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster. For all virtual machines I enabled resource metering. However, on a random basis Measure-VM stops displaying numbers, it just returns blank fields instead of values...resource metering is still enabled on a VM, but all values are empty. This happens to random VMs, while resource metering for all other VMs keeps working properly.

The only workaround is to disable & enable resource metering, however this resets values which is obviously a problem.

Has anyone had this problem?

Server 2012 Hyper-V replica resync fails...

$

A couple of weeks ago we had an outage that prevented a replica from sending changes.  When the outage was resolved, the guest required a resync.  The changes were so large that upon starting the resync the disk filled and resync stopped, and the guest paused.  I fixed the disk space issue and started the guest and resync operation.  However, the resync never fully completed.  Upon review of the eventlogs I found the following events:

Event 33618:  Change tracking for VHD'xxxxx.avhdx' of virtual machine 'guest' is in error state: %%3493462049 (0xD03A0021). (Virtual machine ID xxxxxxxxxxx)

Event 29270:  Resynchronization failed for VM 'guest'. Resynchronization needs to be started again. If this error occurs repeatedly, you can remove replication for this virtual machine, delete the Replica virtual machine, and enable replication again. (Virtual machine ID xxxxxxxxxxx)

Event 32326:  Virtual machine 'guest' requires resynchronization to get back into an operational state. (Virtual machine ID D62FB3F1-BC01-45E2-BF49-xxxxxxxxxxx).

After attempting resync several more times and getting the same result, I removed replication for the guest, and then set it back up. The initial seed using external media import was successful, but the guest now requires resync and it is having the same issue where it never seems to complete and the same 3 events are written to the eventlogs.

Anyone know how I can get this working again?

Thanks in advance for you help!

2012 R2 SOFS Virtualization Question

Hi all,

New to Server 2012 and Hyper-V but trying to catch up quickly. I know that you cannot have the Hyper-V and SOFS roles at the same time but I am having a hard time finding clarification on the exact scope of that statement.

Does this mean that the SOFS instance, or cluster in my case needs to run on its own bare metal hardware, or can I have a 2012 R2 Hyper-V server hosting a 2012 R2 VM running the SOFS instance on the same hardware?

I am looking to deploy a Hyper-V HA cluster along with a SOFS HA cluster using two beefy servers and 2-3 JBOD chassis.

Thanks for the clarification.

Cannot connect to the Virtual machine

Its over three days I wasted trying to figure out what's wrong, with no luck. I have windows 8.1 Pro 64bit installed and I am trying create a virtual machine using Hyper V. Every time I get an error "Cannot connect to the virtual Machine". I read several threads. Installed and Un-installed HyperV several times. Made several changes to VM setting, but nothing helped. I can see in Preview Pan the new virtual machine is trying load OS (Windows 8) and is asking for information, bit nothing on main screen. Please help, if some one can?

Troubleshooting Slow Virtual Machines

Friends:

I am struggling with very slow virtual machines.

I have Windows Server 2012 installed on a Dell T620.  It has two Intel Xeon E5-2650 2.00GHz chips (20M Cache, 8.0GT/s QPI, Turbo) and 64 G of 1600 MHz RDIMMS.  It is set up with two RAID arrays (RAID 1 for OS with two 300G 10k SAS drives; RAID 5 for server stuff with four 600G 10k SAS drives) running on a PERC H710 Adapter RAID Controller (512MB NV Cache).

There are two virtual servers running on the box.  One is the domain controller and the other hosts a SQL-based practice management program.  The "physical server" hosts HyperV etc.

There are 5 or 6 virtual workstations, each running Win8.1E with one virtual CPU and dynamic RAM allocations of up to 8192MB.

HyperV has two virtual switches ("RDS Virtual" and "Intel I350 Gigabit Network Connection - Virtual Switch").  (I don't actually know why it is set up that way.)

I wonder whether anyone can help me trouble-shoot my poor performance?

Hyper-V Error

I am getting this error constantly on all of nodes:

Available processor sets of the underlying physical NICs belonging to the LBFO team NIC /DEVICE/{6F58A4CD-BBBB-4E4A-B7A2-122CDC06E7A2} (Friendly Name: Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver #2) on switch 597752D5-FF11-4436-83B5-449630DF04E9 (Friendly Name: vSwitch) are not configured correctly. Reason: The processor sets overlap when LBFO is configured with sum-queue mode.

Is this anything serious? Any resolution to it?
