Hi!

We are looking at Hyper-V 2012, and would like to hear your experience in a production environment.. not the lab :)

Do you have Hyper-V 2012 in production? what is your experience ? Is it stable? Have you had vmware before and now migrated to Hyper-V 2012 ? Have you gone back to vmware from Hyper-V ?

Thanks for any answers!

Troubles with update virtual machines

I have a host with Windows Server 2012 Datacenter for Hyper-V role.  On this server was installed several VMs - Linux-based and Windows Server 2008 R2. Network config - host have 2 physical networ cards - manage_card with white IP and second_card for VM external virtual switch without IP. Now all VMs are conneting to the Internet from internal virtual switch, whose connected to 1st physical network manage_card with ICS (RRAS Server role need IIS - it's not applicable for me) and Microsoft Loopback interface.

Trouble, what I have - Windows Server 2008R2 can-t update with 80072efe error. After disabling firewall on host error changed on 80072ee2. And 1 moment - when VM check update I lost RDP connection to host.

Unidentified network using one NIC

Hi

I need some help. Im currently trying to set up hyper-v on win server 2012.
I need to get this working with one NIC regardless if that is recommended or not.

In my VMs I get Unidentified network. (Not always but too often)
(I have one external switch)

I have created and deleted VMs and I have noticed that it is a lottery.
Sometimes it works without me doing anything and sometimes I need to
try to fix this unidentified network.

This one: http://superuser.com/questions/469806/windows-8-hyper-v-how-to-give-vm-internet-access
says that I should try to disable/re-enable "Allow management...."
First time I did that it worked, the next time it didnt.

Second try:
http://serverfault.com/questions/10014/disable-windows-server-network-locations
Nothing happend. I left this VM overnight, and next day I saw it was a Public Network and I
could reach Internet. Im 100% sure it was not up & running after I restarted this VM, it happend later(!)

I am not good at all when it comes to network settings, so I would really
appreciate a step by step 100% working tutorial how to get over this.

Do I need to follow this one:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/letsdothis/archive/2012/01/08/configuring-hyper-v-for-multiple-subnets-with-only-one-nic.aspx

Are there any simpler fix?
Help me win this lottery.....

Hi

In a couple of months time i am going to deploy my first server 2012 Hyper V host and virtual machines. The host server has 24Gb RAM. I am going to have four virtual servers. DC, File/Print Server, MDT, and a database server. Can anyone recommend how much RAM I should give the host and each VM?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

there is any way to add more settings in the VM BIOS options of Hyper-V?

There is only the option to change the start up orden between CD, IDE, Network Legacy Adapter...

Thanks

Hyper-V

I bought an ASUS  CM6870  Window 8 machine. I install Window 8 PRO upgrade. I only have a Local Account with Administrator rights.

I enable Hyper v and virtualization in the UEFI BIOS.

I tried to run COREINFO -v to test virtualization but I get not an administrator. When I go to the Hyper-V manager I do not see any option to add a Virtual switch or VM.

I read that the admin problem might be because of a bad activation.

Corrupted multiple VHD files running on an iscsi san after server reboot

I recently implemented a new server with server 2012 enterprise, and attached a synology DS1512+ iscsi san. We have about 22 virtuals running

Everything was working fine, and getting great results. But, as typical, the machine need to reboot for an update. After coming back online, roughly half(only the most important, of course) of the virtual machine housed on the iscsi san became corrupt or the configurations became corrupt, and would not start. Luckily I was able to copy the VHD files of a few of them(once again, low priority ones) to another Hyper v server, and bring them back online.

After another reboot, we lost a couple more virtual machines.

I was thinking about placing a delayed start on the hyper v services on startup, thinking that this would make sure that the iscsi was connected prior to attempt to start all virtuals.

Any ideas???

Odd one on HA network

Hi All,

Have a bit of a strange scenario.

Got a 3 node 2008R2 cluster , managed by VMM 2012.

Customer has 2/3 nodes with an extra dual port NIC.

Would like to configure this NIC as a part of a couple of HA networks between those 2 nodes only.

VMM rightly to my mind , doesn't show the 2 standard switches I create as highly availble at the cluster level (only 2/3 servers have the NICS genius!). Just wonder if there is anyway round this?

Or is it simply best to bite the bullet and add another dual port NIC in there, I suspect it would appear at the cluster level at this stage!

Odd scenario, just don't know if this partial HA within a cluster is possible.

Thanks in Advance

Cannot Install Hyper-V Remote Management on Vista SP2

Hi,

I recently reformatted my machine and installed a fresh copy of Vista with SP2, x86.  My problem is that there seems to be no download available from Microsoft for installing Hyper-V Remote Management on Vista with SP2.  The available downloads (titled "Hyper-V Remote Management Update for Windows Vista (KB952627)" and "Update for Windows Vista (KB952627)") always fail on installation with the message "The update does not apply to your system".

Is there a download available yet that works on Vista SP2?  If not, does anyone know whent that download will be made available.

Thank you.

Problem with backup and hyper-v on server 2012 - Guest hanging then stopping backup causes hyper-v manager to hang

$

Hi,

We have a deployment of 3 x Server 2012 Physical Hosts, each Physical host is running 2 VM's (variety of guest OS 2003, 2008, 2012) and hyper-v replica is enabled on all of the guests.

One of the guests is a 2012 server standard which is being used as a file server and is hosting around 2.5TB of data. With both a 3rd party backup software and WSB backing up to an external USB drive (4TB) the backup gets to just over 1.3TB of data backed up then users complain they are unable to access files on the file server.

We had been running the 3rd party software on all guests with no issues, but the backups are scheduled to run out of hours. Obviously with the amount of data on the file server we expected it to over-run but also hoped that while the backup was running the server should also have been operational! We decided last night to use WSB to see if it was the 3rd party software that was the cause and have found out it isn't!

Just to provide a bit more info, the Servers have plenty of CPU and RAM available for the host and guest. The Host OS runs off 2 x SATA drives in RAID-1 and this particular guest runs off 4 x SATA drives in RAID 10.

While WSB was in progress (at the time of checking when users were complaining) the state of the VM was shown as 'running-critical'. When we stopped the backup it did so quite quickly but the hyper-v manager stopped showing any data on the guests, we were then forced to reboot the host, which also hung on shutdown causing us to have to hard power-cycle the unit.

All the other hosts are fine, and operation of this host is fine, also backup of any of the other guests on this host cause no problems, other than the fact they are small enough to complete their backups out of hours. But surely with VSS backing up during the day shouldnt be a problem (we use WSB to backup physical servers during the day at other sites with no issue)

It now means we only have a full backup of their main file server from the weekend, and its now looking like we will only be able to run another backup this weekend. Obviously there is the replica to go to in the event of a failover, but we need this problem sorting urgently, any help here would be greatly appreciated!

How to cleanup a failed shared-nothing VM migration

$

Hoping the community can help...

I was in the middle of moving a couple of Hyper-V 2012 VMs this afternoon using the standard move operation on the source server (I've done this a bunch of times with no issues, except today).  While moving the VMs, a drive failure occurred in my destination server.  I have since repaired the destination server and am ready to move the VMs as I attempted to do earlier.

Now when I try to move any of the servers I was trying to move earlier (running or not), I get a messagebox that contains the following:

"The move operation completed, but Hyper-V could not delete a temporary version of this virtual machine that was created on the destination computer."

After digging through some logs, I also found this:

Virtual machine migration operation for 'VMname here" failed at migration destination 'destination host here'

I've done some other digging through the programdata folder and others but am still at a loss.  I'm hoping someone out there has some thoughts for me.

Thanks!

Windows Server 2012 - Can occasionally not access second virtual hard drive inside a VM

$

I run Windows Server 2012 RTM Hyper-V and I can occasionally not access the second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) attached to the VM through the virtual SCSI controller. I can however access the first hard drive that is connected with the virtual IDE controller.

I get the following warning in the event log under “Administrative Events” every 30 seconds when this happens:

  • Log Name: System
  • Source: Storvsc
  • ID: Storvsc
  • Message: “Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.”

I get this error once or twice a week and it has caused serious problems since one of the virtual servers that have this problem is a fileserver and the second hard drive contains all the data.

The only quick solution to the problem that I have found is to force the virtual machine to stop using the “Turn Off” feature since a normal shut down does not work (stops at shutting down the event log or similar) and then start the virtual machine again.

You can also wait for about 30 minutes or longer until the disk for some reason becomes accessible again by itself.

My research into this problem shows that:

  • Only 2 of the 10 VMs running Windows Server 2012 RTM that I have, have this problem.
  • Both these VMs have a second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) that cannot be accessed for 30 minutes or longer.
  • Check Disk of the virtual hard drive shows no errors.
  • The second hard drive is attached to the virtual SCSI controller.
  • I can find no problems at all with the physical storage on the (not related) 4 hosts that I have. The problem exists only in the VMs.

I have now attached the second virtual hard drive to the virtual IDE controller to see if this permanently fixes this problem (i.e. does not happen for at least a week).

Is there something wrong with the virtual SCSI controller or the virtual SCSI device driver that comes with Windows Server 2012 RTM? Does anyone else have this problem?

Hyper-V 2012 failover cluster design questions

$

Havn't found answers in MS documentation and blogs for the following two questions:

1. With Hyper-V 2012 and failover clustering, it's possible to deploy HA VM's either to HA SMB 3.0 fileshares or to CSV's (like with previous Windows server versions). What are the advantages and disadvantages of using SMB 3.0 or CSV's? Is there any comparision table available of both solutions?

2. Have to deploy a 2 node cluster with a HP MSA 2000 G3 shared SAS storage. This should be supported and is documented in http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj822937.aspx and http://blogs.msdn.com/b/clustering/archive/2012/06/02/10314262.aspx. But both guides mention that it's necessary to create storage space(s) either before or after creating the failover cluster. But I can't see the reason why I have to create a storage space as an "additional layer", because the MSA 2000 can provide several different RAID protected volumes to Windows with the internal SW, like any other iSCSI or FC SAN provides LUN's. Are "storage space(s)" mandatory with Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) connected physical disk?

Thank you all in advance for any help!
