Virtual Fibre Channel, Virtual SAN, vSAN, NPIV

$

Podem me ajudar nessa?
Não há muita documentação sobre este cenário na internet e sendo uma nova funcionalidade queria muito usá-la, pois assim consigo fazer um cluster de SQL sem ter que usar iSCSI e/ou VMware.

Obrigado!

People, I'll post in English and Portuguese (Brazil) for clarity and a greater amount of people could interact.

48GB RAM Memory

1x HP HBA AE312A dual port 4Gb
5x LUNs to be presented to the physical host and the virtual machines, I will install the Hyper-V role.

I installed and configured Windows. I installed the Hyper-V Role.

I made sure that the whole environment supports NPIV. I created a virtual SAN using Virtual SAN Manager by using my two HBA ports.

I have presented these LUNs to the physical host and to the vWWNs of test virtual machines.

Result: the physical host "sees" the discs without problems. The virtual machines can not "see" the disks.

Can you help me on this?
There is not much documentation on this scenario on the internet and being a new feature really wanted to use it, because then I can make a cluster of SQL without having to use iSCSI and / or VMware.

Hyper-V 2012 and VLAN setup

I need some clarification in setting up the virtual switch in Hyper-V 2012 Standalone.  I have a single active NIC.  I plan to plug it into a trunk port on my switch.  The server IP is on VLAN 1 and I'll put all of the VMs on VLAN 2.  In Hyper-V Manager, I'm able to bind VLAN 2 to the interface, but when I try to bind VLAN 1, I get a generic error that just says it failed.  Is there somewhere I can see a more detailed log?  What am I doing wrong?

Remove SCSI controller from VM in Saved state

Hello!

In a VM we have connected a pass-through disk (using synthetic SCSI controller) for Backup. The disk connected to the HyperV host via USB. In scheduled reboots, some times the disk is not recognized by the host, and this results the VM that has the disk connected not to start, but remain in Saved state.

Is there a way of removing the synthetic SCSI controller when the VM is in Saved state?

Best regards

Hello,

Does anyone know about Hyper-V VMs not sharing a NIC?  Only one virtual machine seems to have network connectivity when I assign the same NIC to more than one VM.

Hi All

I got a Message in Best Practice Analyzer regarding 4k Sector Size and vhdx Files on this Disk.

There is a Solution described here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/13075.hyper-v-avoid-using-virtual-hard-disks-with-a-sector-size-less-than-the-sector-size-of-the-physical-storage-that-stores-the-virtual-hard-disk-file.aspx

But there is no Link or Information how to do this Resolution.

Are there any more Informations?

Cause of Hyper-V-Integration-VSS Event 4098

I'm getting many events of id 4098 in my host Hyper-V Server 2012 event log.  The guest (Server 2012) for the event is on a pass through disk being backed up by DPM Server 2012 SP1 with an agent installed in the VM.  All integration services are being offered to the guest.

I have another guest (Server 2008R2) with pass through disks on another host (Server 2012) being backed up with DPM in the same manner and I do not receive these events.  DPM agent is also installed on this guest and all integration services are being offered as well.

Both guest systems have the current integration services installed.  Does anyone know the cause of this message?  The event text is:

'GUESTSYSTEMNAME': The Virtual machine D5C3A563-DD00-4CFA-A08A-826E37720499 cannot be hot backed up since it has one or more volumes with differencing areas located on different volumes

Thanks.

"Cannot Connect to the Virtual Machine" Randomly Occurs

We have several Server 2008 R2 environments all running Hyper-V.   Randomly on all of these boxes we will be unable to connect to certain VM's using the Hyper-V console.  The message comes up as "Cannot connect to the virtual machine.  Try to connect again.  If the problem persists, contact your system administrator."  I have searched through these forums and the internet and tried various things including restarting the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management Service and the issue does not go away.   There are no errors in any of the Event Viewer logs that indicate an issue.   The affected VM's are usually never the same and will be fine when they are first turned on.  They start having this issue after being online for a while (usually the longer they have been up, the more likely the issue is to occur).    The Guest OS itself seems to continue to function fine, I can RDP to them (those that are setup as such) and they continue to operate, I just can't connect via the Hyper-V console.

So far the only solution has been to either shutdown and restart the VM, or do a 'Save' and then start it again and that will always fixes the problem, but it's far from a permanent solution.    All of the Guest OS's having this issue have the latest Integrated Services installed and do not have any snapshots.  Also the OS on the guest itself has been Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and I think even a Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 VM did it.  The Host boxes have been rebooted and are patched (all SP1) and they continue to have the issue.    Any suggestions are appreciated.

VM with SLES 11 (RTM) does not work under Hyper-V 2012

We are currently upgrading our cluster from Hyper-V 2008 R2 to Hyper-V 2012. Now we have issues with one virtual machine that was provided by a 3rd party. It is running under Suse Linux Enterprise Server 11 (no Service Pack) and doesn't work anymore on the new environment.

If we start with the the virtual NIC connected, it crashes when initializing the virtual network driver.

If we start with the virtual NIC disconnected, it starts but then fails to see the hard drive partition hda2 (and can't continue booting).

Unfortunately I don't have much knowledge of Linux, and this VM is provided "as is" by a 3rd party (so I can't simply upgrade it to SLES 11 SP2 for example).

Does anyone have an idea what we could try, or what we could suggest to the supplier?

Add a new vhdx to Hyper-V Replica

I've got an existing VM running on a Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V host.  The VM is already configure with "Hyper-V Replica", and has been replicating successfully to a second host for several weeks now.  I've recently added a new VHDX to the VM.  This new virtual hard drive is not being replicated with the rest of the VM.  How can I add this VHDX file to the replication?

Backup Windows Server 2012 VM on Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Saved State?!!!

Hi,

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 failover Cluster and I installed a new VM running Windows Server 2012. When I configured the backup to this VM using DPM 2012, the backup is offline (Saved State).

I've checked with diskshadow and the Hyper-V vss writer, always gives me the same thing, backup to this VM will be using saved state.

Why can't I run an online backup, using snapshot? Is'it a problem with Hyper-V R2 and Windows 2012 Child VM?

Note: I already checked all the conditions why the backup of a VM could be running on saved state and none of them are applicable to my scenario.

Carlos.

Virtual drives with multiple VMs

I'm setting up an R720 server with 3 TB of storage to handle several VMs that I'll be running.
The R720 server has two quad-core processors with 32 GB of memory, and my understanding is that the hard drives are where my performance bottleneck is going to happen, even though the drives themselves are 15K SAS drives back-planed on a PERC H710 controller.

I understand there are different performance metrics for RAID1 versus RAID5 and different disk failure issues with each configuration, but I'm not focusing on that at the moment. This question is about maximizing the performance of each VM.

Let's say I have 10 VMS, each about 200 GB in size.  If I create one virtual drive on the RAID controller totaling 3 TB and start dumping VMs onto that one partition, isn't the performance of the VMs going to be a LOT slower than if I were to create 10 virtual drives on the RAID controller, each with a 300 GB hard drive, and store one VM on each hard drive?

I understand there are backplane limitations and other considerations, but I'd like to focus on the performance of the individual VMs here, if possible.

Thank you!

Cant get a private IP to work in Hyper-V VM

Hi,

I need to assign a private IP to a VM in Hyper-V 2012. However, this never results in internet connectivity. The Hyper-V server has 2 NICs, one private and one public.

With this server setup, how can I get a private IP working in a VM?

Thanks

Is there a way to call wevtutil command line tool from linux machine?

Is there a way to call wevtutil command line tool from linux machine?

I want to pull hyper-v events remotely.

Now I can remotely call wevtutil like this:

wevtutil qe "Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS-Admin" /r:hyper-v-server-ip /u:username /p:passwd /f:text

from a Windows 7 machine, but how can I remotely call wevtutil from a linux machine?

Switch filtering?

I have a 2012 server with 3 NICs.

One for host OS on subnet A. (no VLAN)

One for VM subnet A. (via Virtual switch tied to NIC, no VLAN)
One for VM subnet B. (via Virtual switch tied to NIC, no VLAN)

Both are enabled in Windows, but, IPV4 is dissabled.
They are NOT shared with host OS.

I set up 1 VM, (Centos 6.3).
It can talk to subnet B just fine.

It can not talk to subnet A at all. Not even to the host on the same subnet.
It should talk out it's card, through the physical switch and into the Host's card.
External hosts on that subnet can talk to the Host just fine, but not the VM.

It is not a routing issue, since all subnets are local.

Is there something in 2012 that may be intercepting the traffic from the VM?
Some form of Anti-Spoofing?

I would think I did something wrong, but subnet B is fine.
The only difference is that 2 NICs plug into subnet A. (One for host and one for VM)

Please advise, Thanks

Help understanding hotfixes

I'm posting in this forum because i happen to be working on a Fail over Hyper V cluster, but in reality it's a general Microsoft question.  It's been brought to my attention, that hotfixes are built against the latest build of a DLL.   So in trying to find out the necessary hot fix list for my base lined server I've got the following question.

So for example:  Let's say hot-fix 1 fixes problem A.  Hot-fix 1 then becomes the latest build. Then when Microsoft releases Hot-fix 2 for problem B, this hot-fix 2 would also include hot-fix 1 for problem A.  And, this just continues through out the duration of the production updates.  So, as i understand it, I should be comparing release dates of the individual .DLL and .EXE files to determine if i need to update for a system.

Can someone from Microsoft verify this?

Hyper-V VM can't connect to internet

How can I connect my VM to the internet?

I have Hyper V installed on Windows 8 pro machine with 1 NIC, a Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabet Ethernet adaptor. The  VM is running Wk2008R2 and can't get internet access. The machine picks up a 169.254 address and has no default gateway.

I created a virtual external switch and connected it to the Broadcom NetXtreme adaptor. Then connected the network adaptor on my VM to this virtual switch. On my physical host ICS is turned on for the original network connection and the new Ethernet vSwitch now has all the settings originally bound to that adaptor.

What am I doing wrong? I have tried everything and followed all the advice I can find but still I can't get my VM to connect to the internet (host internet is fine). Can someone please advise??

Hyper-V Virtual Machines with large Snapshots

$

Hi All,

I recently came across an environment running 3 Hyper-V R2 (Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1) hosts. The environmet is using cluster shared volumes for storing VHD and VM configurations details. There are a total of 6 CSVs presented to the 3 hosts, 1 CSV for storing system disks for each host (totals 3) and 1 CSV for storing page files disks for each host (totals 3). All CSVs are presented over iSCSI.

Whilst reviewing the platform I noticed that 3 virtual machines had snapshots associated with them. It appears as though someone took these snapshots back in November last year and now each of the 3 virtual machines has a 25-27 GB snapshot (AVHD file). 2 of the virtual machines with snapshots sit on the same CSV and the other VM with a snapshot sits on a different CSV.

I can see that two of the VMs (VM 2 and 3) with large snapshots are running on Hyper-V host 2 with their disks on CSV 2 but the CSV 2 owner is actually Hyper-V 3. However f VM 1 is running on Hyper-V host 1 and has it's VHD and associated AVHD sitting on CSV1, the coordinator of CSV1 is Hyper-V host 1.

I have two questions that I'm trying to find answers for an I am very hopeful someone here may be able to assist.

To begin with, If the mechanics of Hyper-V snapshots is anything like VMWare snapshots, I believe that having snapshots of any size, let alone almost 30GB, are likely to have adverse effects on virtual machine performance. I also believe that since the snapshot disk is essentially a dynamic disk there are constant changes to the size of the disk file and all of this changes to file structure must be managed by the coordinator host (the hyper-v host that originally configured the CSV hosting the VM with the snapshot). I would be very grateful is someone could confirm my understanding here and provide any additional ways of confirming that snapshots will negatively impact performance. Am I right in thinking that in the case of VM2 and VM3, where their VHD and AVHD files sit on a CSV coordinated by another host, any block changes to the AVHD file are routed through the "other host"?

Second question is, what is the best way to get rid of a 30GB snapshots? Do I need to shutdown the VM? I assume a 30GB snapshot is going to take a very very long time to collapse down into the parent disk. Does anyone have any experience removing snapshots of this size.

Many thanks in advance for your help and advice,

Mitch

Compacting not working

Hello,

I have a Hyper-V server with a 273 GB hard disk.

From a live DC/file server, I made a Acronis image and I converted this image to a VHD (130 GB).
I can boot the DC/file server, and I deleted all the data of the file server so that I only use 10 GB of the 130 GB VHD.

Now I want to compact the dynamic VHD to shrink it near 10 GB.
But when I shutdown the virtual server, and I go to compact it, I get the next error:

[Window Title]
Edit Virtual Hard Disk Wizard

[Main Instruction]
The server encountered an error trying to edit the virtual disk.

[Content]
'The system failed to compact 'C:\VM\W2003SRV01-V\FBED6BB4-D695-46F8-B43D-57E66DE4DB41.vhd'. Error Code: The requested operation could not be completed due to a file system limitation

[Close]

What can I do about this? I tried with a external USB harddisk, to copy the VHD to there and then try to compact it, but get the same error.
Thank you
