Cannot Delete Hyper-V Checkpoint

$

0

I just finished building 2 new Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Hosts.  Each running 3 VMs (All Server 2012 R2 as well).  I use Veritas Backup Exec.  Started a backup of each and AVHD files were created during the backup that did not merge back into the parent file after the backup ran.  To "fix" this I manually merged the AVHD file into the parent.  I then re-ran the backup and the same thing happened again.  So I merged the files again.

Now I have checkpoint that I can NOT delete in the Hyper-V Manager.  I started researching and tried some commands in Powershell but nothing seems to work.

Please help....

Hi,

I need to install dos 6.22 and wfw 3.11 on a virtual machine to run an old software.

Host machine is windows server 2008 r2 standard with hyper-v function.

I created a vm on hyper-v and installed dos 6.22 on it. Until there everything is alright.

When i start installing wfw 3.11 everything goes right as long as i'm into the "dos part"

but i get stuck when i reach the early start of windows screen style (when it asks for name, company,...)

My mouse and keyboard are not working while they were until there.

I tried to restart the vm but nothing change. as long as i'm in dos it's alright but when i'm trying to install wfw 3.11 no more keayboard and mouse.

Please Help !

All VMs have static RAM however some of them return two values - real value (bigger) and value/2 (NumberOfBlocks). You can see this for VM with ID2C94BF25-7CF8-4E76-9AA0-6A8DC95537B8. Could you tell me why?

Configuration with two NICs on Hyper-V host

There are two physical NICs in Hyper-V host. I want one NIC dedicated to the host, and the other to provide external network to two VMs. Would below be appropriate?

  • First NIC: assigning it the host IP, without using it for any Virtual Netorks
  • Second NIC: Create an External Network, along with a Microsoft Virtual Switch, and use it to provide network services to the VMs. Virtual NICs for the VMs would be associated with that External Network. A static IP would be assigned to the virtual switch of this adapter, and each VM would be assigned a static IP as well.

Alternatively am I better of teaming the two NICs?

Thanks

Hyper-V - 'Failed to start the virtual machine 'test' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running.'

Hi all,

Having a bit of a nightmare with Hyper-V on my Windows 8 Pro laptop - Whenever I create a new VM and try to start it I receive the following error;

'Failed to start the virtual machine 'test' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running.'

I sometimes also receive an error saying something along the lines of 'Unable to change virtual machine state'

I have done a lot of searching a seen two common answers - The first is to try removing the Hyper-V role and re-adding it - I have tried this several times to no avail. (Intel VT and all virtualisation capabilities are enabled in BIOS). The second issue it would seem some people have had relates to editing the VMX configuration file and adding the linehypervisor.cpuid.v0 = "FALSE" - I thought VMX files were only present in VMware Virtual Machines...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Hyper-V migration not working

Hello,

I have two server installations. One is a Windows Server 2012 R2, one a 2016. Both are running Hyper-V.

They are part of a cluster that was created with the 2012 server. Two VMs are running on the 2016er.

I'm now trying to migrate the VMs to the 2012er. Allow live migration is activated on both servers. The VMs are stored on the cluster shared volume, which can be accessed by both servers. I try to migrate only the computer, not the files, as I only want to switch which server is running the VMs.

What I select
Action: "migrate"
Migration type: "migrate virtual computer"
Migrating options: "only migrate virtual computer" (does not change the location for all the elements)

When I try to start the migration, the following error pops up:

"Error while migration procedure on "TEST-VM
The procedure is not supported."

I googled, but I did not find anything. What could be the problem?

BSOD issue on a couple of VMs over the weekend.

I have two VMs that are part of a Hyper V cluster that both blue screened within an hour of each other over the weekend. Trying to figure out what caused this.

So far I know that it was ntfs.sys that caused the exception. BugCheck of 0x00000024.

Both of these point to a hard drive issue, but so far no luck tracking it down. I'm digging through all of the logs I can find, but nothing useful us jumping out at me except the BugCheck and the Kernel-Power events. I fell like maybe I'm not looking for logs in the right places and will admit that clustering is something that's new to me.

Environment consists of a three node Server 2012 R2 Hyper V cluster with shared storage on a Dell SAN.  Guest VMs are also Server 2012 R2.

Thanks

Can Hyper-V 2012 enable Powershell management of VMs on a 2008 R2 machine?

I have a large number of VMs, all hosted on W2K8 R2 SP1, that I would like to migrate to new W2K12 host machines.  Is it possible to manage the 2008 VMs with the Powershell cmdlets available on the 2012 servers?

Hyper-v live mitration fail when hyper-v replica is enabled in virtual machines

Hi.

INTRODUCTION

We have a cluster (version 2016) in production with the following characteristics.

  • 4 HP Proliant 380 G6 servers with 96 GB RAM each. (With its latest drivers and windows server 2016 datacenter updates).
  • 4 network cards; 2 for iscsi, 1 for livemigration + cluster, and 1 for the production + management network.
  • 5 512GB iscsi disks shared from a QNAP TS-879U-RP (with the latest firnware version).
  • 80 small virtual machines with windows and linux.

By testing, we have verified that Live Migrations work perfectly when virtual machines do not have the Hyper-V Replica option active. Through a powershell script we have been for hours migrating every minute machines from one server to another without any problem.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM

We want to have all virtual machines replicated on a server, so we have activated the hyper-v replica option on all virtual machines. Randomly live migrations fail. The virtual machine hangs in stopping state, totally inaccessible. There is no way to recover it except restarting the server, which takes several hours, as some service is blocked, so the server does not restart until after several hours. We tried to unlock the virtual machine by stopping the process linked to the virtual machine, stopping the hyper-v services or the cluster service, without success. As I say, the only way to recover is to restart the server and the cluster automatically move the machine on another host.

As a note of interest, comment that the cluster is upgraded to the 2016 version from a 2012 version. Before updating to Windows Server 2016 we never had these problems before. Live migrations failed sometimes, but never left the physical host "hung".

Greetings and thanks.

Hyper-V not working after installing Remote Server Admin Tools for Windows 10

Hi Guys,

After installing the Remote Server Admin Tools (RSAT) for Windows 10 my Hyper V machine will not start. Just wondering if anyone has experienced this issue?

In the event viewer the errors are Hyper-V-Worker:

'xxx_machine' could not initialize. (Virtual machine ID XX6B9DCA-C50F-43EE-87CE-0EDAF56DAA5C)

And the Hyper-V-VMMS admin log:

'xxx_machine' failed to start. (Virtual machine ID XX6B9DCA-C50F-43EE-87CE-0EDAF56DAA5C)

Uninstalling the RSAT allows it to work again. The version I installed it the 64 bit one:

WSB for VM with pass thru disk

$

I have a VM exchange 2013 under Failover cluster with pass thru disk . I scheduled a daily backup of this Virtual server by attaching an additional pass thru disk as dedicated backup drive for dail full backup. Before adding this dedciated backup drive to the VM , I have presented it to the failover cluster and then added it to the VM as pass thru disk. However, now I am getting an error in VMM as "unsupported cluster configuration" for this Exchange VM. Though the server is wrkng fine , I believe that ,  when the dedicated pass thru  disk is being used , it will be removed  from the vm  windows explorer hence the cluster settings got screwed up.

Conlcusion:  pls suggest me the best way to use WSB for VM with pass thru disk under failover cluster

iSCI vSwitch setup for Hyper-V VMs

$

Hi All,

We have 3 Hyper-V servers 2 of which are part of a cluster, 2 physical adaptors have been dedicated to iSCSI and LUNs are presented to the hosts for shared storage. Disk failover is controlled by the iSCSI MPIO.

We have a requirement for VM's to have direct iSCSI connection(s) to access the data on the disks, i think this is called a RAW connection (correct me if i'm wrong). To configure this my thoughts were to create two vSwitches and have each vSwitch connect to the physical iSCSI interface (all iSCSI vSwitchs will have the same name across all hosts).

With this is mind it raises questions:

  1. Is the correct way to do this?
  2. How do the VMs deal with disk failover events if the host is controlling the disk pathing via MPIO? My thoughts were to enable the 'NIC Teaming' option by ticking 'Enable this network adaptor to be part of a team in the guest operating system' within 'Advanced Features'. Would this allow the VMs to continue to work gracefully in the event of a  failover when the hosts utilises MPIO for redundancy/load balancing?

I look forward for all of you professional guidance.

Hyper-V drop arp reply package?

Recently I am investigating NLB VIP unstable issue. I also found another issue with ARP, it's might be same issue with NLB.

environment info please see this thread: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/df4722a9-62fa-4d34-a1d3-9dd2de0fa8cd/hyperv-nlb-vip-unable-to-ping-from-some-clients?forum=winserverClustering

I found when NLB VIP get unstable, some VM nodes within this NLB cannot ping it's GW of NLB dedicate NIC. but the LAN NIC ping gateway is pretty fine.

After configure port mirror on TOR switch, I can capture ARP reply package from Cisco Switch. but on Hyper-V host, I can only see ARP package send out, but without any ARP response inbound.

Reboot V-Host or just disable then enable NIC on Hyper-V host, can fix this issue temporary. but after hours or one day, this issue will repro again.

by netsh trace log, found two strange reason. all VM have been disabled MAC Address spoofing and never use NIC bridge.

Deleted Certificates back after restart

Hello
This may have nothing to do with hyper-v but can't find anything on this when I google so I am taking a chance people here will know something.

In my hyper-v windows 10 machine I have some certificates that I would like to delete.  So I go mmc - add snapin - certificates - my user account. Mark the certificate and delete it.

Now it is gone. Until I restart the machine, then it is back again... Why is this and how do I remove it permanently. I first thought it came back from the server on start up but it comes back when there is no server too.

Query on Hyper-V Backup and Recover APIs for Hyper-V 2016

Hello,

Where I can find the latest information on Hyper-V 2016 Backup and Recovery APIs for VSS less (RCT) backup and recovery? I am using some of the WMI APIs with a C# program what Taylor Brown discussed in his Europe-2014 TechEd talk. Few things are working but few things are giving error, e.g.

1. I am not able to use DestroyReferencePoint API using WMI, some parameter seems to be missing, but do not get detailed information as what needs to be done.

2. Not able to find any parameter to set incremental snapshot during CreateSnapshot WMI API.

Any help and pointer to latest documents about API are highly appreciated.

Thanks,

Hyper-V-VMMS 14050 Error even after manual SETSPN actions

$

We have a number of 2012 R2 Hyper-V hosts working just fine in domains with 2012 R2 domain controllers (forest/domain functional level same).

However, two of these 2012 R2 Hyper-V hosts are in a domain with 2008 R2 domain controllers (forest/domain functional level same) and both hosts are seeing 3 of these 14050 errors every 2 minutes.  Replication works just fine.  Just the annoying errors spewing into the Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS-Admin log.

We've created the outbound firewall rules for port ranges 5000-5400 and 9000-9999 (based on other KB articles) and verified with "Get-NetFirewallRule -PolicyStore ConfigurableServiceStore".

We've restarted the VMMS service, rebooted, turned off the firewall.  Still getting the errors!

planned failover stalls for domain controller vm

$

We are testing replication between two 2012 r2 hyper-v hosts.  We are wanting to use replication for DR purposes.

We have 2 VM's.  One is the DC for the domain.  The other is an Exchange 2013 server.  Only one DC exists in the domain.  We have enabled replication for each VM.

Planned failover works fine for the Exchange 2013 server, but stalls at "failover to replica server" for the DC.

In a "best practices" scenario, is a running DC required to complete a planned failover?  Since we only have one DC, and it is the VM we are trying to perform a "planned failover" for, in theory, should this work?  We cannot find any documentation that answers this question.  We have found documentation indicating that 2012 r2 hyper-v is DC aware.

We are considering having a dedicated DC VM on each hyper-v host that is not replicated to remedy the planned failover issue, if that's needed.  But not unless we have to.  Just the one DC works great for small network deployments.
