Hyper-V MAC Adress Conflicts

$

Hello Community,

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 Host with 6 VMs. suddenly the host went inaccessible across the network due to MAC address conflict which was logged in the event log as below.

(Warning) MAC conflict: A port on the virtual switch has the same MAC as one of the underlying team members on Team Nic Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver.

I've seen a resolution in one of the MSDN wiki (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/31357.hyper-v-mac-address-conflict-event-16945.aspx) but doesn't seems to be the right way of resolving this (Change the MAC Address Manually - not a good practice at all !)

To Describe more on the setup - we have 4 VMs connected to Production Switch (Shared NIC) | 2 VMs connects to DMZ Network (VLAN Directly binds to VM, Not Shared). When the Host gone inaccessible, All VMS became inaccessible.

Appreciate any thoughts !

NTFS VS. REFS

Hello everybody,

When using an external SAN (Such as NetApp or EMC) with Hyper-V 2016 - Is there a clear reccomendation to use REFS instead of NTFS? Are there any support issues we should be concerned about? Are there any clear guidelines from Microsoft about this?

Thanks is advance to all the repliers.

planned failover stalls for domain controller vm

We are testing replication between two 2012 r2 hyper-v hosts.  We are wanting to use replication for DR purposes.

We have 2 VM's.  One is the DC for the domain.  The other is an Exchange 2013 server.  Only one DC exists in the domain.  We have enabled replication for each VM.

Planned failover works fine for the Exchange 2013 server, but stalls at "failover to replica server" for the DC.

In a "best practices" scenario, is a running DC required to complete a planned failover?  Since we only have one DC, and it is the VM we are trying to perform a "planned failover" for, in theory, should this work?  We cannot find any documentation that answers this question.  We have found documentation indicating that 2012 r2 hyper-v is DC aware.

We are considering having a dedicated DC VM on each hyper-v host that is not replicated to remedy the planned failover issue, if that's needed.  But not unless we have to.  Just the one DC works great for small network deployments.

Manage Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V from Win 10 LTSB 2016 client = "...could not access an expected WMI class..."

Trying to access Hyper-V running on Server 2012 R2 from Windows 10 LTSB 2016 and I only get an error:

The Hyper-V Management Tools could not access an expected WMI class on computer....

Same server accessed from Windows 8.1 H-V Management Tools is working fine.

Anybody any idea?

According to this it should be no issue

Hyper-V NLB VIP cannot ping from some clients

Hi All

we are developing distribution applications, it's heavy rely on windows NLB to provider load balance function. I deployed 11 NLB instances, all NLB nodes are Hyper-V VM. all VM and V-Host both are running on Windows Server 2012 R2 OS with latest windows patch.

once all NLB get converged, I find at least two or three NLB VIP cannot ping from some clients, those clients either resides in same V-Host or connect to same TOR switch, even in same VLAN, but those clients can ping other NLB VIP. I also tried on other clients which are not connected to same TOR switch but connected to same core switch, all NLB VIP both are able to ping.

the typical configuration like this:

NLB1-node1 -> Host1 -> TOR Switch A -> Core Switch A&B

NLB1-node2 -> Host2 -> TOR Switch A -> Core Switch A&B

NLB1-node3 -> Host3 -> TOR Switch A -> Core Switch A&B

NLB1-node4 -> Host4 -> TOR Switch B -> Core Switch A&B

NLB1-node5 -> Host5 -> TOR Switch B -> Core Switch A&B

NLB1-node6 -> Host6 -> TOR Switch B -> Core Switch A&B

All NLB are Multicast mode, only Enable MAC address Proofing on NLB NIC.

the others NLB also like this, they are resides on different Hosts and cross TOR Switch.

Host model is HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9, no NIC teaming enabled. NIC model is HP 331i with four 1GB ports.

TOR Switch is CISCO Nexus N3048, only L2 enabled.

Core Switch are two Nexus 7706, L3 enabled. VIP enabled between in two 7706A and 7706B.

two or three NLB in same VLAN with /27 net mask.

static ARP entity was added on 7706A & B

static entity also added into mac-address table on TOR switch with Ports and NLB VLAN ID.

the worse scenario is NLB1 and NLB2 in same VLAN. three Nodes of NLB1 can ping NLB2 VIP, but the other three nodes of NLB1 cannot ping NLB2 VIP, I even can see arp entity of NLB2 VIP on all NLB1 nodes.

Does anyone met the same issue? I doubt that's might be a bug either of MS or Cisco, but don't know which patch or hotfix can help?

Send Initial Replica to external harddisk - time delay?

Hi,

We've got two hyper-v 2012 R2 clusters with replicas configured, separated via WAN. We want to transfer a large VM (<4TB) to the other cluster, but we're wondering how much time delay the replication mechanism can tolerate and I can't find any specific value or  statement about it.

Is there any?

cheers

Server 2016 Hyper-V guests time source

I have a Server 2016 Hyper-V host and two Server 2016 Hyper-V VMs (with more planned). I was getting ready to dcpromo one of my Server 2016 VMs and wanted to check its time source first. Both of my Server 2016 VMs are syncing to time.windows.com. One of them has time synchronization in integrated services turned on, the other (the one I was planning to promote to a DC) has time sync turned off and also disabled in the guest OS. Regardless both sync to time.windows.com. If I run w32tm /rediscover /resync the server will correctly sync to my PDC but after a about a minute the source will change back to time.windows.com. Currently my PDC is a physical SBS11 server that is correctly syncing to an external source. All my domain PCs correctly sync to the PDC. I was planning to decommission SBS11 and make one of my Server 2016 VMs the PDC if I can get them running correctly.

Good day,

On a recent evaluation copy of Server 2016 (Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.14393]) I find that there is no InitialStore.xml file in the path C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V. How do we delegate role based access in Hyper-V on Server 2016?

Thanks.

Error when creating a new VM in Server 2016

I'm running server 2016 Data center edition.  I upgraded an existing install from Server 2012 R2 to 2016.  Everything seemed to be up and working fine, it been about a month since I upgraded.  However I went to create a new VM today and after going through the wizard I get the error:

"New virtual Machine Wizard:

The server encountered an error while configuring the devices on New Virtual Machine.  Hyper-V encountered and error trying to access an object on computer 'MYCOMPUTERNAME' because the object was not found.  The object might have been deleted, or you might not have permissions to preform the task.  Verify that the Virtual Machine Management server on the computer is running.  If the server is running, try to preform the task again by using Run as Administrator."

After this the MMC will crash.

I have tried to create a new VM under both of the local accounts I have.  This machine isnot domain joined.  I have discovered that if I don't attach a VHD I am able to create the machine successfully, I can then go into settings and attach the VHD without error and the VM works.  I also discovered I only get this error when creating an Gen 2 VM.

I have already tried running MOFCOMP %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\WindowsVirtualization.V2.mof, which I had to do initially after the upgrade to even get into the hyper-v console.  I have also run sfc /scannow and DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth - both of which report no errors.

I would appreciate any help in resolve this issue and checking for any other underlying issues with Hyper-V.  Thanks!

Hello.

I have a scenario I was doing Virtualization test after my two Virtual Server encountered Network hang, I went and did replication test that created a separate Virtual Server lets say its called DBtest, now because of how crucial this server was needed we had to use this server for sometimes and retrieve its data later, we used and retrieved some data but unfortunately forgot to retrieve a very important data. is there a way to get this data from this DBtest server? snapshot was taken. kindly help if this can be retrieve how and where we can them.

Thanks.

Unique identification of a VM through VM GUID from inside the guest.

$

Hello, We use an internally built inventory and asset management solution.

We are facing the following issue : How to identify uniquely a computer,  knowing that it can be a VM and that a VM may have been duplicated ?

Let me clarify : a VM that is imported in Hyper-V, may have ALL the usual IDs you can access from the guest identical to another VM :

That is : same UUID, same MAC address, same SID, same BIOS ID, same Netbios name. Of course, the won't be able to function well in the same domain/forest unless properly isolated and this usually is not something you want to have in a production environment.

But let's face it, it may happen and if it is all you have as a primary key used to differentiate machines in a relational database, then you're screwed.

So i thought that the best way would be to access the VM GUID (the one of the XML VM files) and add it to build the primary key.

It is no problem using WMI and Msvm_KvpExchangeComponent from the host, but it would be nice to have access to this data through the guest, meaning that the KVP should be exposed on the guest too through the integration components.

Feel free to discuss, i think it is an important issue.

Enable TPM on Hyper-V Machine

Hello

As always I have a hard time deciding in which forum to post, so feel free to move if there is a better option.

I have a Hyper-V client that I got here:
https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/downloads/virtual-machines

Now I need to be able to create a Virtual smart card on this machine. (tpmvscmgr.exe  create /name tpmvsc /pin default /adminkey random /generate)

However I get:

Creating TPM Smart Card...
TPM Virtual Smart Card management cannot be used within a Terminal Services session.
        (0x800704d3) The request was aborted.

If I enter tpm.msc on the machine it says:

Compatible TPM cannot be found

It works on my local machine and the cards created there can be found in the virtual machine. How to do so I can create them in my hyper-V?

NicTeam not connected after HyperV virtual switch.

Hello everyone,

I recently installed a fresh copy of hyper-v server 2016 (core hyper-v).
After the setup I created a nicteam whit no problems, all is working well.

But upon installing the Hyper V role and creating a virtual switch (as asked in the Hyper V setup) the nicteam connection is no longer functioning. And the newly created Hyper V virtual switch has no internet connection.

I have no clue of what the problem could be.
after much searching on the web I decided to post and ask for help.

My Setup:

  • 2 Gigabit Ethernet controllers bundled into Marvell 88E1116 (MCP55 Pro)

it's an onboard controller on a MS-9661

Configuration:
Both gig con are joined to one nicteam, the team has the following setup:

  • Teaming mode: LACP (Cisco switch, works just fine whit out Hyper)
  • Load balancing mode: Hyper-V Port
  • no standby adapters selected

Team Interfaces:
just one team interface whit no special setting.
Has a manual assigned IP.

As I mentioned as long as I have no virtual hyper-v network interface created on the team interface there is no problem. When I create a hyper-v virtual network interface on the team interface the team interface displays the following message: No Network Connection

Any help would be much appreciated.

hyper-v host deploy to bare metal

Currently have a VMware infrastructure and want to switch over Hyper-V 2016.

I have new server to start with.  I don't have SCCM or VMM installed anywhere.  Should I just install Windows 2016 Server standard and add Hyper-V or is there another way to get a more stripped down Hyper-V hypervisor on the bare metal server?

thanks

Server 2016 + Intel Core i7 2600K = Can't boot any Hyper-V VMs

$

I run my own Hyper-V lab on a souped-up workstation to test and stay current on technologies, and have been running on Server 2012 R2 for quite a while. I decided to finally upgrade to Server 2016 (clean install), and to my surprise I couldn't start any of my VMs; not only that but I noticed I could even boot up new VMs I created just as a test. My processer supports SLAT, and to my knowledge that's the only difference between Server 2012 and Server 2016 requirements for Hyper-V. I researched all over, but could not find a hint of any posts from anyone experiencing similar issues. I'm curious if anyone has any thoughts.

Any time I tried to boot up any VM, and I tried all sorts of different configurations, I got the error:

Your pc needs to restart.
Please hold down the power button.
Error Code: 0x0000005D (I believe that was the code, I could be wrong..)
Parameter:...

I tried creating Gen1 and Gen 2 VMs from scratch, mount a Server 2012 ISO, and the second they would start loading the ISO, that crash would occur. The event logs showed various errors about Hyper-V Worker intercepting an unsupported instruction from the VM and halted it. Sorry I can't be more exact, I gave up and reinstalled Server 2012 for now just to get my VMs back up and it was late at night.

For what it's worth, here is my config:

ASUS Maximus Z Extreme IV motherboard
32GB RAM
8TB Space
Intel Core i7 2600K CPU (Supports SLAT)

I'm wondering if I need to just upgrade the board/CPU/RAM.. but would love to get this working without such a huge investment. And no, I didn't check the Microsoft HCL. My config is not supported, and I know that. It doesn't mean I can't get it to work though. :)

Thanks

Re-calculate memory demand on a vm in Hyper-V

$

Good morning TechNet community

What I'm trying to understand is the Memory Demand calculation when using Dynamic memory in Hyper-V

Found this well detail page - https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/chrisavis/2013/03/06/monitoring-dynamic-memory-in-windows-server-hyper-v-2012/

That said

Memory Demand – Derived from performance counters, this is the amount of memory required at this time to fulfill the requirements of what is going on in the running VM.

My issue is that these performance counters can't be reset or re-calculated to get current status. Just shows a point in time the VM require memory over the allocated Maximum RAM. Right now its only using 50% of allocated memory.

I found that it was rogue task which has been dealt with but the Memory Demand still shows higher than the assigned memory. SCOM monitor picks this up using the MP 'Hyper-v 2012 R2 VM Monitoring' and im looking for a way to reset the Memory Demand counter so that it clears this monitor. The only "fix" I have found is increasing the max memory (which is a waste) or setting the memory to Static.

Any idea's?

Hi there all,
I installed Hyper-V Gen 1 and created a sample VM by all default options onServer 2012 R2 DC, the VM won't start,
"because the hypervisor is not running".

"Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management" is running.
Bcdedit /enum shows:
hypervisorlaunchtype    Auto

However, after I installedServer 2008 R2 DC and Hyper-V on same machine then created VM, the VM started and everything works fine!

What the trick is?! Is there a big difference between Server 08 and 12?!

I googled the solutions for this issue for two whole days but no Lucky!

Any one have suggestions are big appreciated!

Hyper-V Replication with Failover cluster

I have two physical servers two of them has identical Hardware, Apps and OS i have enabled Hyper-v and installed 2 VMs 1. for app and 2. for DB. Everything is perfect know i have enabled the Hyper-V replication to 2 server as replica of these 2 VMS its replicating no issues. later i have install FOC role to have High Availability on both the primary and replica server

my question is, can i add nodes of replica server which replicated from primary server as a Node in failover cluster manager for HA. Please suggest.

also i have connected to server with a cross-over cable for High availability so one server gets down other can take over
