Deploying a VDI role on hyperv hosts (in failover cluster)

Hey,

I'm looking to deploy a VDI environment.

I currently have 3 physical hosts that each run hyperv and are in a failover cluster setup.

My question would be, is it recommended to deploy the VDI role on those 3 hyperv hosts?
Are there any know issues / insights about this?

Server 2012R2 fully updated
Would be running several win10, win7 clients

Thank you!

Storing vhdx files to refs volume?

When running standalone Hyper-V (Server 2016) is there any reason not to use refs filesystem for volume that is used to store vm's (.vhdx files)?

Network connection on VM

I have a Server 2008 R2 running Hyper-V, and the virtual machine is running Sever 2008 R2, with SQL server 2012, IIS 7.5, and a third party application that is integrated with SQL server 2012.  The third party application is accessed through a browser.

Unfortunately, the the third party application is out of date and cannot be updated.  There is a proposal to take the host server off the network, and connecting it to a switch, and the connecting the computer in the office to the switch, and accessing the third party application on the virtual server that way.

Is this feasible?  I have tested just disabling the network card on the host server, but I could only access the application by connecting to the virtual machine using the Hyper-V manager.  I was only able to connect to the application by using the IP address of the virtual machine in Internet Explorer on the virtual machine, but most of the functionality was not there.

Is there a way to make this work?  Thanks

Retrieving Data from VHD File (Virtual Machine Harddrive)

Hello,

I had a distribution of linux installed on a Microsoft Windows Hyper-V virtual machine. The system shutdown properly but the RAID array on the drive it was on failed. We had a backup that was poorly configured and as such we didn’t back up all of the data we needed.

Therefore, after getting the RAID array back to a degraded state I was able to get the VHD files (virtual machine harddrives) off of the RAID array but the tools I would use to mount them do not work as they say the file could be corrupted. I cannot use the Windows-based utilities as they only recognize NTFS formatted partitions and as such I cannot recover any files with those tools.

Does anyone know or have experience with recovering or accessing VHD files in Windows or Linux?

The ideal scenario would be if I can somehow mount these drives in a Gentoo or other Linux-based OS which I could then try and recover files with. Even if the files don’t mount is there a tool that can scan drives mounted in Linux or Windows for recoverable files?

Also, could there be a tool that can scan a VHD file for recoverable content?

Thank you for your time.

How do I delete old VHD files off a hyper V host machine

I have created several test VMs and moved a production VM away from a particular host machine.  the only remaining VM cannot start do to a lack of disk space.  there should be plenty, the problem is all of the old unused vhd files. But I cannot figure out how to delete them.  the Hyper-V Manager only allows me to select them.

I certainly have to be missing something simple.

VSS Error in writer Hyper-V

I have a cluster with CSV 5 and DPM can't perform backup on only a few machines in the cluster, it apesenta VSS the following error:

Well investigating deeper into the Hyper-V server virtualization encounter the following errors:

Well, how did not get any results in searches, then checked the versions of the IC on client machines as clusters migrated from 2008 to 2012 some were outdated, updated them, even just to leave everything compliance.

So I decided to clear the "Backup (volume snapshot)" and now he backs up but does the same linux machines, saving the machine and causing downtime of it, and even if you are a linux machine with this option it can not perform the backup this because it tries utilizr VSS method (I think).

Please, anyone help-me?

thanks!

Hyper-V Manager (RSAT Windows 10) Access denied. Unable to establish communication between '' and ''

Hello Guys,

I'm having problems when trying to use Hyper-V Manager (RSAT Windows 10) to remotely Manager a Hyper-V 2012 Evaluation Server (Core). I am receiving the message when connecting to the server from my Hyper-V Manager. Access Denied. Unable to establish communication between 'Admin PC' and 'Hyper-V Server'.

Both systems are on the same domain, I have enabled both remote management and remote desktop on the server and I have added the domain account that I am using to remote onto the server into the server's local Administrators group and RemoteDesktopUsers group. I can remote desktop onto the server and administer it however Hyper-V Manager doesn't seem to be working.

I've done some research and can see that there are a few articles for Windows 8 RSAT for changing the DCOM settings to allow AnonymousUsers to RemoteAccess however I've applied this fix and it's still not working.

Really stuck with this one now, suggestions?

Thanks, Bo.

Windows Guest VM Frozen

Hi,

I am running 6 guest VM on a single host running hyper-v on server 2012r2 datacentre edition. All my guest vms are also running windows server 2012 R2 datacentre edition. Lately I have been experiencing random guest VM freezing. All you can see is the frozen windows server 2012 from the console. I am not able to RDP to the VM and also not able to logon from the console of hyper-V. However I can ping the guest VM fine and file access is also working fine. Now this does not happen to one guest VM but is random and can be any guest VM. I have gone through the log and I didn't find any thing unusual. The only way out is to turn off the VM and start again and then it works fine.

Any help and advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

SUSHH

Windows 2012r2 Hyper-V Gen 2 boot options missing

Ok, I've wasted an entire day searching for an answer for this.  I found a few people with the same issue but no answers.

I built a Win10 1607 Gen2 VM.  I mounted an ISO to capture windows for SCCM.   I cant change my boot settings in Firmware because they are missing.

I went to the CLI in PS and tried Set-VMFirmware -VMName 1607 -BootOrder "DVDDrive","HardDiskDrive"

Set-VMFirmware : Cannot bind parameter 'BootOrder'. Cannot convert the "DVDDrive" value of type "System.String" to
type "Microsoft.HyperV.PowerShell.VMComponentObject".

Has something change in the was this is done?   I have 5 Hypervisors all running the same build and none of the gen 2 machines have this option.  The Gen1 VM's are fine.

Is there a way to pause replication so merging can complete?

Hello,

I noticed if it has been a long time since replication has occurred, when you resume replication you get a big avhdx file.   Replication looks like it completed but the merge process begins but gets interrupted as the replication occurs again.   The only thing I know to do is to shut down the virtual machine that is having the issue so there is no replication and the merge can complete.   Is there a way to do this without shutting down the VM so you can get rid of the avhdx file?

If I just pause replication - replication and MERGING stops.  I need to stop replication but force the merge.

Hyper-V VMConnect Authentication Error - 0x607

I have recently installed a new Hyper-V server into the 2008 R2 cluster.

The host can Connect to all of the other servers on the other nodes in the cluster. But it cannot connect to its own VMs, nor can any of the other nodes connect to any of the VMs on that new server either.

When attempting to connect (VMConnect.exe) the following error appears - "An authentication error occurred (Code: 0x607)". Screenshot below -

Does anybody have any clue as to whats going wrong here?

I have a Hyper V host running Server 2012R2 with a 1 TB usb drive attached.  I have taken the drive offline and am trying to add it as a physical disk to a virtual machine.  However, when I try to apply it, I get an error saying "Failed to add device Physical Hard Drive"  I have done this on other Hyper V machines with no error.  Any ideas ?  I saw a blog that says you cannot pass thru a external drive but I have done this in the past.

Hyper-V 2012 R2 new VM with ISO in DVD boot failed - default SCSI not IDE

Hi, have created some VMs fine on 2008R2 and 2012 Hyper-V but now onto 2012 R2, am using the Gen 2 VM and hitting install error when booting them from the 2012R2 RTM .ISO (downloaded straight from Technet) loaded into virtual DVD:

I see from http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/53f901e4-5bd0-4e13-80a2-bca2f57b15e9/hyperv-unable-to-boot-from-cd-or-iso-in-vm-machine?forum=winserverhyperv that Hyper-V seems unable to boot from a synthetic SCSI until guest OS actually installed - so Catch-22! But I can't add an IDE Controller because it's not on the list:

I tried the Integration Services and it seems fine on the Settings (including ticking the only one unticked - Guest Services) although if you need to run them from the DVD, it has the same problem - you can see them loaded (or the Win2012R2 ISO) in the DVD Media but you can't make them run through booting on SCSI!

The physical drives are SATA not SCSI but presumably no matter as Hyper-V runs SCSI virtually, but why does Hyper-V default to SCSI and how do I get the DVD to run off an IDE instead if that is the way to install a base OS from .ISO? Or is there an easier way than all this?

    TIA, Phil.

when i try to start the service 'vmicheartbeat' hyper v heart beat service and similarly other services except hyper-v virtual machine management which runs fine always, below is the error that I get when I attempt to start other VM services :

error message I see is 'service started on local computer then stopped.some services stops automatically if they are not in use by other services or program.'

    Any suggestions ?

Storage migration caused VHDX to shrink?

I recently converted an old file server VM primary disk from VHD to VHDX. I did it on a different drive and forgot to move back before I re-started VM. Then I used live storage migration to move new VHDX back to primary storage. In the process the resulting VHDX shrank. I had run compact / shrink on VHDX after conversion already. I just found this interesting and was wondering if there was an explanation?

    Hello Community

        On Windows Server 2012 R2 I installed Hyper-V.

        After I created myserver.vhdx .

The problem is that when I try to install Windows Server 2012 R2
on myserver.vhdx I go to Hyper-V Manager, right click myserver.vhdx
    and click connect.

        Next I go to:

            Hyper-V Manager
            right click Virtual Machine Name
            Connect

            Note: A message appears stating:

"boot failure. reboot and select proper boot device
or insert boot media in selected boot device "

        Next I click:

            Action
            Insert Integration Services Setup Disk
                and it says success

Next I click the cdrom drive and see:

            Windows Server 2012 R2
            Install Now

        Next I click
            Install Now
    the hourglass appears and shows

    "Setup is copying temporary files"

The problem is the install won't go any further
    it just hangs here.

In short how can I get the Windows Server 2012 R2
to get past that message and finish installing?

FailOver Clustering Hyper-V Role doesn't see my shared storage

    Hi Everybody,

I am facing an unwanted issue with clustered Hyper-V and Failover Over Role with NetApp CIFS. Here it is :

I have two physical servers with Hyper-V enabled, both of them have a NetApp CIFS storage for Virtual Machines.

I have no issue everything is working fine : i can create, start, manage VMs on both nodes with Hyper-V Manager and i can manually move VMs between nodes.

When i add the Failover Role and i want to configure this role for HA Virtual Machine, it failed with the following messages :

The path where the virtual machine configuration is stored, '\\fsst00115\FSST00115_1', is not on storage managed by this failover cluster. Verify that the path is accessible from all nodes of the cluster that can own this virtual machine.

The path where the virtual machine checkpoints are stored, '\\fsst00115\FSST00115_1', is not on storage managed by this failover cluster. Verify that the path is accessible from all nodes of the cluster that can own this virtual machine.

The path where the virtual machine Smart Paging files are stored, '\\fsst00115\FSST00115_1', is not on storage that is managed by this failover cluster. Verify that the path is accessible from all nodes of the cluster that can own this virtual machine.

The path where the virtual machine hard disk is stored, '\\fsst00115\FSST00115_1\Virtual Hard Disks\test.vhdx', is not on storage managed by this failover cluster. Verify that the path is accessible from all nodes of the cluster that can own this virtual machine.

Of course the path is available and accessible from all nodes with Hyper-V Manager. i tried to give Full access to machine node and cluster node account on the share but no success.

I check again all parameters on my NetApp share for the vserver invole in the share :
