Split VHDX files into smaller files?

$

Hi, I have a 160 GB VHDX file that is backed up with CrashPlan.  The size of the file seems to induce performance issues when backing up, as it takes many hours for CrashPlan to read through the VHDX to determine which parts have changed.  If CP is interrupted (such as due to a higher-priority file to back up), then it appears that the backup process starts the file scan over again.

Is there a way to split a VHDX file among smaller files, similar to how VMWare can split a virtual disk into 2 GB segments?  If not, any advice for making the file more backup-friendly?

Thanks!

Hyper-V Dynamic Disk Fragmentation

Hi Folks

I am monitoring our Hyper-V Cluster environment and found out that the fragmentation of our VHD (and VHDX) are mostly fragmented over 90%. I believe that some of our performance issues could've been related to the high fragmentation. I searched the net and found out how I could get past the fragmentation issue:

1. Use fixed Disks instead of dynamic ones

2. Move the VM-Storage to another cluster shared volume.

3. Compact the VHD

As our environment is an Cloud solution for customers all over the country with 100+ VMs, the recommended solutions are not possible for us for the following reasons:

Our storage infrastructure would've been the tripple size (or bigger) with fixed disks. The costs would be huge to change all VMs to fixed disks.

Moving the VM to another CSV works perfectly as the fragmentation goes down to 0% as soon as the VM is moved. But we are not able to move the VMs storage all the time for 100+ VMs.

Compacting the VHD is only working for servers not running. We are not able to shutdown customer VMs to compact the disk. Beside that, the compact function only helped to reduce the fragmentation by about 10% which is still to high.

My question is:

Why are the VHDs getting fragmentet that high? We have a very similar infrastructure which is running directly at our customers place, also with dynamic disks, where the fragmentation is somewhere about 5-10%

How can we reduce the fragmentation rate except moving the VMs storage?

Thank you!

TPM Virtualization error

Hi,

I start saying that I have already created the configuration that I'm going to explain, on another PC and all is working, but I received a new PC and I'm cloning this test environment.

I created two client VM and two server VM for MBAM BitLocker testing. I need to activate TPM on the two client VM (1 win 8.1 and 1 Win 10).

My host PC is a Dell E5550 wth Win 10 Enterprise 1511

I've done the following configuration:

- checked TPM configuration, is enabled and owned

- Enabled Isolated User Mode in Win 10 features and rebooted

- Enabled WinRM with Powershell with Enable-PsRemoting

- Configured "Turon On Virtualization Based Security" in local group policy

I can enable TPM in VM Settings without errors, but when I start the VM I receive a generic error

If I disable TPM all is working.

VM Client are Win8.1 and Win10 , generation 2 VM

Do you know what it could be?

Cheers

Hyper V on 2012R2 with Teamed NIC

Hello All,

I have a server with 2 physical NICs. I configured both of them into a Teamed NIC using Server Manager.

Now, I have a need to install Hyper V.

During installation, it asks me which NIC I would like to use for the virtual switch.

Do I choose the teamed NIC or choose one of the single NICs for use as the virtual switch?

Low transfer rate between HyperV nodes

Hi,

We are facing a low transfer rate between two HyperV nodes in a cluster.

Sometimes we receive packet loss or high latency above 18ms.

VLANs,speed and duplex configuration are correct and no loop on switches side.

How can we identify this issue ?

Slow XP Performance on Hyper-V

Hello,

I have a DL585 with 80GB of Memory and 4xQuad Core AMD Opteron.

It is currently Running a Fully Patched 2008 Datacenter with Hyper-V. I have multiple virtual machines running some are Windows 2008, Windows 7 RTM for testing, a 2003 Server, and a couple of XP workstations.

All the other virtual machines(Except the XP ones) run great. For some reason the XP workstation run very slow.

Here is the configuration of the XP workstations:
Brand New from scratch Install of XP Pro fully patched to SP3
Assigned two Processors and 2 GB of RAM each
Integration services installed successfully.

For some reason the install took way too long which is understandable for xp since it installs on emulated drivers. But I don't understand why it is running so slow once you do the integration pack.

XP is the only OS that runs this slow on Hyper-V. Its almost unusable. The issue is not just when I'm RDP in, its also slow when connected to it via the Hyper-V Manager.

They all share the same storage which is a Fibre Attached SAN, so that is definitely not the issue.

I did see other posts regarding something similar but they are referring to Intel Procesors. I have AMD Opteron 8360 SE 2.51 GHZ processors. ( http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/thread/ee8ca086-e8af-44d6-9793-b45594ba6e84#page:2)

Any ideas?

Thank you

Hyper-V 2008 R2 to 2016 Migration Question

I have several CSVs (Fibre Channel LUNs) presented to the current Hyper-V 2008 R2.  The plan is to move the existing storage to a new Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V /SOFS cluster when it RTMs.

The new 2016 HV cluster will leverage a SOFS cluster for VM/data storage.

My questions are:

  • can I present the existing CSVs directly to the SOFS and create file shares on the CSVs?
  • can I then move the data (VMs) into the shares seamlessly?

Hi All,

I am trying to stop the windows firewall service for a application installation. Seems if i stop the RDP disconnects and only if i enable Windows firewall it connects RDP. I tried below steps

1. "netsh advfirewall set allprofiles state off" command doesnt turnoff the windows firewall
2. I verified group policy where no policy applied related to windows firewall
3. I created the exception to all the connections for some ports. Seems that doesnt work

Is there a way to stop the firewall. Please help

Can't ping Hyper-V Virtual Machine or access Network File Share

$

Hello,

I'm trying to use Hyper-V for the first time and I've a problem accessing Virtual Machines running on the server. I've installed Ms Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1 and I already try VM clients using Windows XP SP3, Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 and Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition R2, and I've the same problem with everyone. The host is only running File Services, Hyper-V and IIS roles, and is a clean install only for testing proposes.

I can access from the Virtual Machine to the outside network and internet, but when I'm trying to access the VM from other LAN pcs the VM is found but any connection is rejected except Remote Desktop that works fine. Then I test the VM firewall using NMAP and wireshark trying to find what's wrong, but it just let me at the same state since there is responses from VM but when trying to access to shared folders or pinging it there is no response. Disabling the firewall won't show any better result.

By the way, there is no problem to access the hyper-v host server, in particular at inbound and outbund traffic.Contrary towhat one wouldexpect in the VM there is responses from inbound and outbund packets and the VM netbios name appear in a computer search from a LAN PC, but pinging and file sharing as no response when trying to access.

So I ask you if there's any default policy that must be blocking the access since I'm testing within a workgroup?

thanks for your help.

Network issue with Server 2012R2 Hyper-V Cluster

Weird issue with Sever 2102R2 2 node cluster. Has worked for several years but during patch Tuesday reboots 2nd node could not rejoin cluster. Cluster validation tool indicated it was a network error and Failover cluster manager shows same issue even though all NICs are up and can be reached via Ping, etc. Network configuration has 4 network adapters. #1 is on 192.168.140.10(LAN) on VM01 and 192.168.140.40(LAN) on VM02. #2 on both is setup as VM_Main in Hyper-V so doesn't have an IP address just Hyper-V virtual switch. #3 is on iSCSI network 192.168145.7(SAN) on VM01 and 192.168.145.11(SAN) on VM02. #4 is on iSCSI network 192.168.145.8(SAN) on VM01 and 192.168.145.12(SAN) on VM02. The SAN is connected to 2 - HP2530 switches with one adapter from each host and each controller (2) on the equalogic on each switch. The Hyper-v vEthernet adapter is on 192.168.140.23 and shows enabled on VM01. On VM02 the adapter is set to automatically detect and disabled.  I don't remember what the normal status of the vEthernet adapter was on VM02 as I set it up a while ago and it has worked (I was thinking the owner of the vEthernet switch was the controlling node in the cluster so disabled was normal for the non-controlling node). All adapters have IPv6 set to auto except the iSCSI SAN NICs where IPv6 is not installed. Cluster network 1 192.168.140.0 is set up for cluster communication.

On the cluster the cluster service on VM02 won't start and the network details in the cluster manager show that Cluster Network 1 - 192.168.140.40 (LAN) and Cluster Network 2 - 192.168.145.11 (SAN) are unreachable. Both networks are running fine on VM01 and all virtual machines are running on VM01. Again I can ping all interfaces and the binding order is the same on both nodes - LAN, VM_Switch, vEthernet Switch, SAN1, SAN2.

I have read quite a lot over the last few days and the indication is that the networks are not set up correctly but I am not sure how to change it. Again it has worked for quite a while and other than patches not sure what changed.

I noticed that when I ping VM01 by host name it responds with the IP address of the vEthernet (192.168.140.23) adapter not the IP address of the host (192.168.140.10). Also, for reference, the switches are set up with two ports on each switch in LACP mode; one switch is set to active and the other to passive.

Sorry for such a long post but I know the more you know the easier it is to diagnose.

I am trying to see what kind of LLDP messages are sent by the Hyper-V switch. I connected a switch to a machine with Hyper-V/windows server 2012 DataCenter on bare metal. I also have data center bridging enabled, but I am not able to see any LLDP messages on my switch interface? Any suggestions on How I may go about it?

Sorry my bad English. I have a server running windows server 2012 r2 datacenter and setup Hyper-v. I already create a vNic bridge to physical network. I have 3 public IP 42.112.xx.168,169,170 42.112.xx.168 255.255.255.0 42.112.xx.1 set to physical network, Internet working ok

I create a VM on hyper-v and select VNIC as a network adapter, and set the IP 42.112.xx.169 255.255.255.0 42.112.xx.1 but got no internet, I tried to reset the VM got same error. BUT after I reset the host machine, the VM got internet.

So I try to create more VM and set the last IP 170 to it, and got same error. Only have internet after reset host machine. And sometime I lost internet again when reset the host machine again.

Pls help me !

Hi,

I am using 2 node Hyper-V failover cluster of server 2012 R2 OS, and there are total 4 VMs that hosted on this 2 node cluster.

but issue is whenever i checked the failover cluster Manager , all the VMs are also showing as a node under the Node sections of Failover cluster manager wizard.

Hence I want to remove such VMs from Node section that showing as a node in Failover cluster Manager (because these are virtual machine not a cluster node). I am looking for Steps that i need to perform for this...

Also i checked that in all 4 VMs  Hyper-V Virtual machine  there are hyper-V role and failover cluster features are installed.

Hyper-V and usb dongles possible?

I've heard about software emulation for usb support in the virutal realm..

What i'm dying to know is if anyone has succesfully made this work in Hyper-V yet..

IE:  either the barebones hyperV or the layered software one?

If so.. how did you do it?

I'm hoping to install the barebones Hyper-V (is this what its called) on our new server and migrate all the old VS 2005 images over..

Thanks in advance

Best practice to assign Storage LUN for Hyper-V 2012 R2 VM

$

Hi All,

We are planning to setup the Hyper-V environment on B200 M4 blade. Plan is to install the Hyper-V on local disk and all the VMs will be assign disk from the storage. There would be around 10+ VMs. what would be the recommended option for presenting disk (SAN) at VM level.

- Assign the individual drive storage LUN as pass through (including boot LUN) to VMs. will have to keep all drives as offline at host level.

- Assign combine LUN size for all the drive for one VM to Hyper-V Host, format it on host and from there, present individual VHDX to VM.

- Assign separate LUN to hyper-v host for each VM drive, format it on host and then assign individual VHDX to VM, in this case there would be lot of logical disks have to be created at host level.

Thanks,

Hyper-V RBAC.

So AzMan is deprecated, is SCVMM the MS answer for RBAC now? Does that allow me to setup RBAC for access to VM's inside a Failover Cluster?

I have linux VM's on my failover cluster that need initial setup, and I want to delegate that to our Linux Admins - but without granting them full access via Hyper-V Admins (on all nodes?) I don't see a way to do that.
