DHCP/DNS Errors with TLG Base Config for W2k8R2

$

I have set up all 5 machines virtually for the W2k8R2 Test Lab as defined in Microsoft's step-by-step guide. I started going through the errors I had and am having trouble with the INET1 machine on the internet network. I am consistently getting EventID 404, 407, & 408 for the DNS server and when those aren't there I get Event ID 1041 for the DHCP server. I've checked ipconfig and everything looks good for both the INET1 and EDGE1 machines. When using arp -g from the INET1 machine to check connectivity with EDGE1, it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I can always get rid of the errors on DNS by restarting it, but they come back the next time I start the machine. It seems like a nice group of problems exists and it depends on how my hair looks to decide which ones will show up at any particular time.

Essentially, my DHCP server isn't doing its job for some reason but I can't figure it out and I want to solve it before I take my snapshots. BTW, take it easy on my, I am noob at this stuff. I'm sure I've left out some relevant info. Thanks in advance

BTW, the host machine the VMs are running on is running W2k8R2 and it has plenty of power.

One more thing, I have received an APIPA address in ipconfig even though I have set a static IP for IPv4 in Inet Properties

CSV Volume disk signature changed.

Hello everyone

I encountered this on one of our Hyper-V clusters a few days ago. We had a node failure due to (root cause uncertain, the logs are inconclusive) either network or FC-HBA failure. we lost contact with all machines which resided on the disks that the failing node owned.

the disks were moved to other nodes and machines were brought back online. but oddly enough there appeared "duplicates" of machines across some nodes, this was fixed. and the failing node was taken offline and we did a driver/firmware update and placed the node back into the cluster.

a few days later we noticed that one of the disks were "online, redirected". and we were unable to bring it back to online direct access mode. so migrated it to another node and rebooted the node. Now the volume was online BUT it was not able to find the disk, because the disk signature had changed!? fortunately there were no critical servers on the disk, but were not able to get it back online.

I've come across some "old" KB's and i wonder if its still possible for them to apply(it says win2000 and 2003)? because it explains what I have experienced.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/293778

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/280425

Any other suggestions of what we can do to bring the disk back online without re-initializing the disk?

thanks for your time.

Clone on image a virtual machine

Hi

We're running Hyper-V 2008 R2 server in a cluster. We don't have System Center.

We have a VM that was copied (dynamic vhd file) from Hyper-V 2008 to a Hyper-V 2008 R2 CSV volume LUN. VM has extreme low disk performance, so we came to the last point that there must be a problem with VM. All other possibilties (cluster, storage etc have been tested and reported no performance issue).

Since VM in running Windows Server 2008 and SQL 2008, we want to clone this VM to a brand new vhd file. We don't want to make an clone of a VM on a hypervisor level (yes I know for cloning VM we need to install System Center) we want to make an image of a whole operating sistem and than create a new virtual machine with a new VHD and restore this image to this new VM.

Can these be done and how via System Center or are there any other SW that we can use ?

I'm thinking of some kind of a V2V like with VMware converter is easy to do it without having  to install whole System Center architecture :-)

Thank you in advace

Mike

Hi,

I have 2 Hyper-V 2012 nodes, that is NOT configured as cluster. They have local storage, and im trying to move a vm from one to another, like "Shared Nothing Live Migration on Windows Server 2012, but it fails. I do the following:

Select Move -> Select "Move the Virtual machine"->"I Select the other host"->Select "Move the Virtual machine`s data to a single location"->Select a folder on the other host-> and then Finish.

I do have Write Access to this folder on the other host. I get the following error

***************************

There was an error during move operation.

Virtual machine migration operation failed at migration source.

Failed to create folder.

Migration did not succeed. Failed to create folder XXXXXX: Invalid Signature.('0x80090006')

**************************

Why do i get this Invalid signature ? The strange this is that it Works the other way around....

Thanks for help

CentOS 6.3 on Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V 3.0 Bug? (PANIC: Early Exception)

Hi everyone,

I've been testing WS2012 for some time but recently I've been running some tests in the lab with Linux. I'm shocked no one else has reported this error but then I doubt that many people run large Linux VM's on Hyper-V.

If I assign 4 GB memory to a VM it installs and runs CentOS perfectly with very impressive performance.

However, if I assign more than around 6 GB of Memory (8 GB completely breaks it) the CentOS installer does not even load and shows the following message:

PANIC: Early exception 06 rip 10:ffffffff81c451bb error 0 cr2 0

I would like to add that this also happens on a fully installed VM CentOS 6.3 with IC 3.4. Screenshot attached. Hopefully this can be resolved by an update... :-)

New 2012 File Server, advice for redundancy

$

Historicaly we have always had a stand-alone fileserver with a local tape backup drive along with making robocopy backup of the files to another remote server overnight. This server also hosts the printers for the LAN.

One issue I have found is that the Print server sometimes crashes and requires me to reboot the mail fileserver during the day, hardly ideal! (Simply restarting the print service doesn't work)

I have just purchased a new server (We can't afford SAN) for a new fileserver which will be built with Windows 2012.

Can anyone advise me on the best way to build this for the future?

I would ideally like to run a seperate VM for the print server, so this can easily be restarted (Does this make sense?)

What should I do for the fileserver to ensure some redundancy? run a 2nd VM for a File server? clustering?

I have a seperate backup server off-site, which I currently run simple robocopy jobs to overnight. If I upgrade this to Server 2012 can this be in a cluster or a on-line standyby?

I guess this all depends on what I am trying to achieve:-

a. Should I simply aim to have a 2nd server which has a current copy of the files ready to go (This is what I have from the evening before), but it wouldn't have all the shares ready to go... so would require some work to bring on-line if the primary FS went offline.

b. A 2nd server which is using DFS to have a copy of the files which would be quicker to bring on-line

c. Clustering to ensure immediate change-over, but would this work with 2-3TB of storage needed for the various network shares and files

d. Some other solution I haven't thought about?

I'm sure there must be a neat and sensible solution to my needs and it must be something other SME's also need.

Any advice or suggestions/thoughts gratefuly received.

Virtual Machine Manager Deployment

Hellon everyone,

Need your kindly suggestions again on my Hyper-V deployment. I have a small Hyper-V cluster, 2 nodes, 15 VM (to be imported) and storages / Switches / etc... Currently I installed SCVMM 2012 on one of the Hyper-V hosts by evalution mode. Please share me your points on below questions:

1. I need a strong reason to ask my boss to purchase SC and the super-expensive SQL Server. What is the reason you deploy SCVMM and/or other SC components? Is SC the only option for these tasks?

2. Shall I purchase another physical server for SCVMM? Or I simply install SCVMM and SQL on a hyper-v host (That's the current status)? Maybe install them on a VM?

Any reply will be appreciated.

HyperV 3.0 and Port forwarding

I have a Windows Server 2012 setup with HyperV and NIC Teaming (independent hash). Inside this server I have 3 vm

1x Fedora

1x Win2012

1x Win2008R2

All 3 are setup with ftp (21) and http (80) services

From my home router, when I do a port forward for port 21 and port 80 to the physical and Linux vm, it works fine.

However when I port forward to either windows machine, it does not work.

I have tried turning off the firewall on the windows vm, rebooting the boxes, changing the router and the result is still the same

Anyone have any idea what may be the cause or if i'm missing something?

Windows server 2012: Hyper V VM migration failure

Hi.

We have installed and configured Hyper V on W2K12 servers.

Also installed a Guest VM running Windows server 2012 64 bit.

Source and destination hosts are part of domain.

When we try to migrate the VM we get the error:

Anyone has any idea why it is failing ?

tried a lot googling and reading technet site but couldn't get anything relevant to Hyper V.

Thanks in Advance.

Hyper-V Guest Can Only Ping Host IP

$

I have Server 2008 R2 running Hyper-V with 2 Marvell NICs teamed using their driver software. The network connection itself works fine on the host. When I create a new VLAN for the Hyper-V VMs to use and point it to the team, all VMs get an IP address from the DHCP server but cannot ping anything BUT the host IP.

Example:

Host is 192.168.1.151

Guest is 192.168.1.161

Guest can ping 192.168.1.151 but cannot ping 192.168.1.1 (gateway and DHCP server) or any other address, internal or external.

Host or any other locally connected physical computer cannot ping 192.168.1.161.

It seemed to work the very first time I teamed the NICs together but literally overnight, the problem returned. It all works fine without the team. Since the guest can ping the host and the VMs get IP addresses, I'm guessing this is some sort of weird configuration problem that nobody had anticipated.

Although I don't really need to have the NICs teamed, I thought it a good idea to get a bit more bandwidth and since I could.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How to Installion Hyper-V Integration for Windows Home Server 2011 on Hyper-V Server 2012

$

I am running Windows Home Server 2011 on Hyper-V Server 2012.  The WHS2011 VM is configured to use one Synthetic NIC.  All software updates have been installed to both OS.

In the Hyper-V Manager Network tab I noticed a message that said something about the WHS2011 NICs being degraded and that integration services needed to be installed.  (Sorry, but I don't have the exact message text.)

In researching the problem I found this Microsoft webpage which mentioned the following concerning WHS2011, "Install the integration services after you set up the operating system in the virtual machine."

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831531.aspx

In WHS2011 Server Manager I looked at all Roles and Features and I didn't see anything that looked like it had to do with Hyper-V integration.  In searching (Microsoft's website and Google) I have seen a Linux Integration download, but no download related to Hyper-V Integration for WHS2011.

I have not tried running Windows 7 on Hyper-V 2012, but the above webpage implies it would also need some software upgrade to allow for Hyper-V integration?

How do I install the necessary Hyper-V integration Services so that WHS2011 will work properly on Hyper-V Server 2012 with Synthetic NICs?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

P.S.  In asking this question the Microsoft Forum suggested the following link -

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/thread/7a68ee77-ecab-44d1-840d-8c14fd9a9bab

That question about Windows 7 is similar to mine and the answer was there is no Integration Services available for Windows 7 home edition.  Given that WHS2011 is a Server OS I would not think the same answer would apply, i.e., no Integration Services are available?

Resource leak in Hyper-V 2012

$
0
0

Background:  I'm using an HP ProLian DL380 G5 as a Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V host (Datacenter edition - fully patched as of 11/28/2012).  This machine is used to run regression tests which (using automation) revert VMs, start them, run some tests and then stops them.

After running hundreds of tests, the tests start to fail despite the fact that the same failing tests run successfully if run in isolation (prior to the test run).  Investigating found that the host was failing several calls.  Using Task Manager (showing the handle counts for each process), I found that the SYSTEM process was consuming over 100,000 handles despite having only ~1,000 after reboot and the same number of tasks/VMs running in comparison to after reboot.  Reboot clears the handle count to around 1,000.  Running the test suite again, results in a consistent leak.

Using Handles.exe (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb545027), I found that the extra handles were primarily Key handles.  Additionally, I found that the handles were allocated when my automation process invoked the "ApplyVirtualSystemSnapshot" method on "Msvm_VirtualSystemManagementService" but never released.  Having isolated to that method, I tried to do the same operation using the Hyper-V Manager console on the host.  The same handles were leaked.

Problem Reproduction:

  • On a Hyper-V host which is not actively changing...
  • Start Task Manager, select Details tab.
  • Add Handle Count to displayed columns.
  • Have a VM with a tree structure for the snapshots.  e.g.:
  •    Base Snapshot
  •       Test 1
  •       Test 2
  • Using Hyper-V Manager, revert a non-running VM to a snapshot (e.g. Test 1 in the above example).
  • Handle count increases by 9 for each revert.  Repeating the operation will increase the count another 9 handles.

I have also seen that the other Hyper-V operations within my suite (start and stop VM) at the high level also cause a 9 handle leak, I have not gone through the debugging steps to confirm them by factoring out the VM handle usage, but a revert, start, stop sequence will result in a 27 registry Key handle leak.  I am reasonably confident that the same leak exists within those operations.

Summary:

This is a significant problem for me in that I cannot run my test suite to completion successfully.  This is holding up our Server 2012 development effort.  (Moving these VMs to a 2008 R2 box is not a viable option.)

Thank you for your time,

Edmund Harfmann

Error installing Server 2012 in 2012 Hyper-V VM

I have a 2012 Hyper-V Core setup and I am trying to install Server 2012 on a new Hyper-V VM and am getting the following error as it goes to begin the setup:

"A media driver your computer needs is missing.  This could be a DVD, USB or Hard disk driver.  If you have a CD, DVD or USB Flash Drive with the driver on it, please insert it now."

I am not sure exactly what it is missing.  It throws the error right after you hit install now and before you insert the product key.  I have tried on 2 seperate Hyper-V instances and it results in the same error.  I have also tried installing it via ISO and via direct attached media drive with a burned DVD with the same error.

I was able to install Windows 8 without issue on a VM, and would have thought it would have had the same driver base.

Any ideas?

Thanks -- Chris

Why is cpu power management not working in Server 2012 with Hyper-V?

$

0

We've been using Server2008R2 with Hyper-V for a couple of years now and chose it at the time because of its ability to make use of Intel SpeedStep and AMD PowerNow!

Now with Server 2012 and Hyper-V V3, all power management abilities seem to be gone. The CPUs are always at full speed and our servers need twice the energy as before while idling. (Yes, the CPU P-states are enabled in the BIOS)

Is this by design? Is there a workaround to enable cpu power management again? Despite the great new features of Hyper-V 3, this would be a show-stopper for us since we are very concerned about energy consumption.

Hyper-V VM I/O performance issue between SCSI and ATA VHDs

$

0

First, I will go over the configuration:

Everything below is running Windows Server 2012

2 Hyper-V machines

1 SAN provisioning with iSCSI

1 Cluster Shared Volume used to store the VMs running on the Hyper-V hosts

One of the VMs has 3 virtual drives for this test (all of which are stored on the CSV):

1 fixed-size ATA boot-drive VHD holding the OS

1 fixed-size 20GB ATA VHD (for testing this problem)

1 fixed-size 20GB SCSI VHD (for testing this problem)

I have an identical 10GB file copied to both 20GB drives.

If I copy the file from the ATA -> ATA drive, I get ~10-30MB/s transfer rate

If I copy the file from the SCSI -> SCSI drive, I get ~250-300MB/s transfer rate

The same poor performance (10-30MB/s) is noted on the primary boot drive which is also ATA

There must be something that I'm missing, because every post/blog/diagram I've read online says that the performance should be the same.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

Restarting/Shut down Hyper V Host Server

Hi

We have recently started virtualizing out server environment. currently we only have  one hyper v host server which is running about 3-4 non critical virtual machines. I was wandering do I need to shutdown each individual VM before I restart the hyper V host. If the VMs are running and I restart the Hyper V Host server do the VM's shutdown gracefully?.

Thanks in Advanced

Dell R710 - Server 2012 - Hyper-v Role won't install

I've installed Server 2012 Standard on a Dell R710 server and I can't get the Hyper-v role to install. It has the roles of ADDS, DNS, File Server, and IIS. Goes through the process of install and says a reboot is required to finish the installation. During Windows reboot it say's "failure configuring windows features, reverting changes"....then boots w/o Hyper-v installed. I have the latest (6.0.7) bios and have Virtualization turned on. I have a pair of nic's teamed for the DC, a 3rd enabled and a 4th disabled. I selected the 3rd enabled single nic for the Hyper-v in the config. Any ideas?

Thanks

Mark
