Why can't the hypervisor be launched when Windows is booted from a VHD(X)?

$

So I attempted in a few ways to launch the hypervisor on a "VHDX Windows".

First of all, I just tried to add the Hyper-V feature as I do for installation on physical disk. I was able to "tick" every sub-component of the Hyper-V feature including the hypervisor (i.e. it's not greyed out). However, during the required reboot, Windows told me that the feature cannot be turned on and reverting the changes, then after it reboots again the feature was not added.

Then I try to boot the VHDX in a Hyper-V VM, with the experimental nested virtualization enabled. I was able to enable Hyper-V and run a VM inside it.

However, when I boot the VHDX "physically" again, the hypervisor is not launched.

I also checked the BCD store with `bcdedit`. `hypervisorlaunchtype` is `auto`.

So is it the Hyper-V hypervisor just by-design not supported on "VHDX Windows"? If so can someone briefly explain the rationale? Also is there no hackish way at all to launch it under such circumstances?

VMs host name from Windows 2012 R2 hyper-v cluster

Hi,

We have 2 node hyper-v Windows 2012 R2 cluster.
Couple VMs run on this cluster.
I have check "Guest services" on each VM to get Guest services installed.
Run following script to get VMs' host name:

 (get-item "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Virtual Machine\Guest\Parameters").GetValue("HostName")

But script failed with error: get-item : Cannot find path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Virtual Machine\Guest\Parameters' because it does not exist.

Is any way to get each VMs host name and IP from hyper-v host?

Thanks

Windows 2008 R2 - Hyper V Logs - Successful events not found

Good Day Everyone

I exported 2 x Windows 2008 R2 - Hyper V Virtual Machines and to a different share in the network. I had time to see one VM completed successfully but 2nd machine being a big one I initiated the export and had to leave for the day.

This morning I came back I found the exported files in the network share but cannot find the logs in confirming the successful export. I  checked in event viewer Hyper V VMMS logs but it doesn't seems to have successful events but had previous failed events that I was working before.

Any advise  or comments on where I can find the logs or events for successful export of VM.

Thanks again in advance.

Background merge fails, replication state critical

I have a Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V environment, which replicates to another server.

Edit: Both the primary and replica server have all windows updates installed.

The replication works 100% UNTIL I make a backup with the Windows backup (full backup) to an attached USB disk (This backup completes successfully). As soon as the backup finished the following events are logged:

After this, replication AND backup fails until I shutdown all virtual machines - at this point (turned off) the merge succeeds and after I start the machines again everything works fine until the next backup.

SQL Server loses connection with the application after some Windows Update

Hi everybody,

I've asked this question before but unfortunately it got unresolved so I'm trying one more time.

My colleague developer is telling me that starting recently (about a month ago) our application loses connection with the database.

I'm not exactly sure how to troubleshoot this problem and resolve it. At one point we stopped all other SQL Server related services except for that instance database engine and it helped. But now the problem returned and the extra services are staying shut down, so it must be something else.

What should we do with her to figure and fix this problem for good?

BTW, I experienced some weird problems myself after that Windows Update, but I uninstalled some, then there was another Windows Update after that, and so far everything seems to be OK on my end.

Thanks a lot in advance for assistance.

W2012R2 VM does not take dynamic memory

$

Hi,

W2012R2 VM does not take dynamic memory.

Host W2012R2 not in cluster.

All updates installed

VM memory config: start 4gb, min 2gb, max 16gb

Page file uses 10gb

VM takes 4gb only

Hyper-V manger does not shows memory status and demand - normally it should.

RamMap shows Driver locked uses 800k

I tried to restart Hyper-V virtual machine manger service, disable/enable integrated services - no luck.

If I shut down VM and start it again - problem disappears.

But I need to resolve problem without reboot. Is it passible ?

Migrate VMware to Hyper-V : Some arguments to to deciders

Greetings,

This is not a question bu t an open discussion : I want to convince a customer to migrate to Hyper-V 2012 R2, since its VSphere platform is outdated and he decided to go VMware 6.0. I made all the slides to explain the difference between the products. I'm a Hyper-V Pro, and i deployed many Hyper-V platforms since 2008 versions.

But, my arguments are not solid enough since technically, we will keep the same features or regress (VMware still advanced on many areas, this will be cached up by WS 2016, but this decision has to be made now):

My questions :

- I don't want technical or budget arguments, i want strategic arguments based on the following facts :

- The customer has 12 ESXi hosts with around 450 VMs

- 21 offices with ESXi standards (2 VMs per host)

- We are implementing a Microsoft Azure infrastructure for data-center scalability and DR (Q3 and beyond)

- The IT is Microsoft pro, no VMWare expertise. We can manage (on the future) Hyper-V easier than VMware

I need your outputs, your key points, all advises are welcome. Make this project a success for me

Slow 10gb 2012 R2 Hyper-V Live Migration

$

Hello everyone!

I have an issue that I can't figure out and I'm hoping someone can get a new idea or set of eyes on this problem. I'm going to try and be as detailed as possible... but please ask any questions if I left anything out.

Basically I'm having an issue where i'm not getting the full 10gb transfers (or even close) when doing a Hyper-v move between hosts using 10gb nics. I get 2.5gbps if i'm lucky. These servers are not in production yet and are just being used to test a setup before being rolled out.

I have two similar but not identical Dell Poweredge R910 servers.

The two hosts have 2012 R2 Datacenter with only the Hyper-V Role installed. All updates, firmware and manufactures drivers applied, down to the bios, nics and raid cards as well.

I have installed one Intel X540-T1 10gbe card in each server in a x8 slot. I have these two cards connected via a straight  RJ45 Cat6 patch cable (no switch, no crossover). The cable is 3ft long. I have hyper-v setup to use this as a live migration network by adding the nics ip's in each host under live migrations.

Storage is local between each server a mix of 10K Raid10 and Enterprise class SSD disks. When doing disk to disk (same server) transfers of large file I see up to 900MBps on SSD's so i don't think the storage is a bottleneck.

When I do a live migration move between hosts I get between 2-2.5gbps transfer speeds using this link.

I ran iperf between the two servers and consistently get between 6-6.5gbps so I know these cards are at least working close to their rated speed. I would have thought these tests should be closer to 10gbps though.

Not sure how to troubleshoot this. I have changed the nic setting to enable/disable VMQ, I have enabled/disabled jumbo packets as well as a bunch of other nic settings in an attempt to narrow this down. Nothing really seems to speed this connection up. I have also disabled the c states and c1e in the bios and set everything to maximum performance with no change in speed.

I have tried 3 different patch cables including a non supported 5e patch cable (just to see if the speed degraded) and the speeds stayed the same.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Problems isolating Cluster traffic from LAN traffic!

$

Hello good people of Technet!

I'm having a problem with my Hyper-V Failover cluster and I was hoping someone could help me out...

Please bear with me, as I have had to figure Hyper-V out for myself mostly, I will happily provide any missing information.

To start off, I have set up the following Failover cluster:

Operating System: Hyper-V Server 2012r2 Core edition, Note: Not Server 2012r2, but Hyper-V Server 2012r2.
Number of nodes in the cluster: 2
Number of physical NICs in use on each host: 8
Storage: Dell Equallogic SAN
Storage access: iSCSI
Port Configuration: 2x iSCSI in a NIC Team
4x Virtual switch, each for a different IP range, not shared with the host OS
1x Management NIC, connecting straight into the main LAN
1x Heartbeat NIC

Between the hosts and the SAN are two switches which we wish to separate from the LAN to isolate the traffic on the cluster and traffic from the cluster to the SAN from the main LAN for security reasons and to comply with Microsoft best practices.

The aim is to make the Hyper-V nodes only accessible via the Management NICs from the main LAN.

The following NICs have connections into the LAN:
1x Management NIC on each server
1x Virtual switch providing LAN access for guest VMs on each server, switch is not shared with Management OS.
All other NICs are connected into the switches, and the switches themselves are currently connected to the LAN by a single connection each.

The problem: When the LAN network cable is pulled from the switches in an attempt to isolate traffic, the Hyper-V guest interface for VMs becomes unbearably slow, as if it's having severe network routing issues (a guess). Also, the traffic from one particular DMZ subnet (possibly all, but this one's the most problematic) will not route properly to another machine on the same subnet, and communication is lost for these particular guest VMs.

Would anyone have any ideas how I might be able to fix this?

I do apologise if this question seems oddly phrased and vague, I'm fairly new to Hyper-V and as mentioned earlier, I would be happy to provide any additional information.

Many thanks,

Guest VM "Windows server 2012 R2" on new laptop with windows 10 Hyper-V shows "license is expired". Even after downloading again on 28th March 2016 from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-windows-server-2012-r2?i=1. How do I get the full trial 180days version, as I want to setup TLG for MCSA study purpose.

Backup starting every night killing RDP users

$

We have an issue that occurs every night when our backup software runs on the clients main server. The backup software uses the VSS and for some reason this causes the Hyper-V backup to start on both of the virtual machines. One of these VM's is a RDP server. Even though we have unchecked the backup in the settings of the VM the Hyper-V backup still kicks in. When it does the RDP becomes so slow that all users can no longer use it. The only fix we have so far is turn off the feature in the backup software to use VSS. We do not want to leave it this way because with the VSS off the open files on the server are not backed up. We need a way to prevent the Hyper V backup from starting when the backup software starts its nightly backup routine.

Hyper-V Advice - Virtual Network Switch?

$

Hi all,

I am currently trying out Hyper-V 2012 for the first time and I am just trying to get my head around the virtual switch config.

Basically I have a server 2012 R2 machine which has one physical network port which I need to configure a static IP address too.

Now every time I create a "external" network switch for my VM's the physical adapter on the Hyper V server seems to change to a virtual switch and loses all the IP settings I configured earlier which makes my Hyper-V server unreachable, is this normal?

A new network card is also created, am I right to think this is a virtual network card and I should configure the static IP settings under this card now instead of the physical network card?

Thanks in advance

How do you change writer caption from saved state to child partition or Online? - Server 2012

We are having issues backing up 2 of our Hyper-V VMs due to a microsoft related issue.

Server 1:
Exchange 2013 running on Windows Server 2012 standard

Server 2:  File & Print Server running on Windows Server 2012 standard

Issue: The failing backups are due to the VMs having a writers caption entry of 'Backup using Saved State'

The caption entry that should read "online" or "child partition", andNOT "offline" or "saved state".

Once these VMs are in online state we will be able to run an 'Application Aware backup' of our servers.

VLAN doesn't work - on ONE HyperV host.

$

Hi

Setup:

HP-C-Class Blade enclosures

Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Hyper V cluster with two Hosts, one in each enclosure.

LAN-Team used.

5 VLANs defined on the HW-switch. The Virtual switch is using the LAN-Team

iSCSI storage using other NIC's.

Problem:

When using the default LAN-VLAN, network connectivity is working in the VM's on both hosts.

When using another VLAN, connectivity is lost when migrating the VM to Host2.

Testing:

I have disconnected each of the two physical NIC's from the Team on host2, and when assigning the affected VLAN to each of these Nic's the VLAN is working so the physical infrastructure is ok regarding the VLAN.

My focus is on the LAN-Team and the virtual switch on Host2.

On the LAN-team both hosts are set to "default VLAN membership", and imho the vSwitch also looks fine.

Question:

Have you got ideas into where to look further regarding this problem. My focus heres is the LAN-team and the virtual switch because the physical infrastructure benneath apparently is working as it should?

Best regards

Dear Server Expert,

I am trying to create VM via the virtual machine wizard in hyper v. however, I found that currently the specify generation option is not available, hence I am not able to create generation 2 vm. I am currently using Windows Server 2012 Standard

Please advise on this.

THanks so much

Does the Hyper-V Virtual Switch support IGMP snooping (Multicast)?

I've noticed that all IGMP traffic destined for a specific guest VM is sent to all VMs connected to the same virtual switch. It's as if it were acting like a hub when it comes to IGMP traffic.

If it does support IGMP, how can I go about to configure it? there seems to be a lack of information regarding the topic.

Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 - Cannot Delete VHDX or View Permissions on CSV

I have a VHDX file on a CSV that is no longer being used. It was left from a deleted VM. I am trying to manually delete it, but it dispears...and then when I click refresh...it's back again.

I attempted to delete this via Powershell on the CSV owner, but it says that Access is Denied.  I tried to change the permissions and owner, but it will not allow me to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unable to Connect to Guest Console (Virtual Machine Connection) via Hyper-V Console

I am at a loss and need some help.

I have a (2) node HA Hyper-V cluster running the full OS (not Core).  While logged into the physical node with a domain admin account, i open the Hyper-V console and look at my Guest VMs i can see the status in the preview windows.  If i try to open a connection to the guest (Virtual Machine Connection) after about 3-5 min i get one of the following error messages.

Error1:
"Cannot connect to the virtual machine.  Try to connect again.  If the problem persists, contact your systems administrator."

OR

Error 2:
"Timed out while trying to connect to the virtual machine.  Try to connect again.  If the problem persists, contact your systems administrator."

I have read the John Howard blog and checked all the dcom / wmi permissions and all seem right.  Again i am having this issue on the Hyper-V server itself.

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks.

Maybe a Measureup error???

Hello guys. Sorry for the post here, but i think it's a quickly question/answer.. i can't understand this answer. From the questions seems that we need reduce the size of the .VHD file and not the total space used on the system drive. the disk is fixed and we can't reduce the .VHD size. The answer explains that due to 70% utilization of the disk, we need to freed up space and shrink the disk is not the best solution, but WTF!!! You ask me for decrease the size of the .VHD file not the space of the volume. Anyone have a good explanation?
