Server 2012 hyper-v replication

$

hello,

we currently replicate our DC to a hyper-v 2008 server using Double-Take.  The VM lies powered off during replication and can be powered on when failover is required.  I want to upgrade the hyper-V server to 2012 and then use the new built in replication tool to replicate the VM across to another offsite 2012 server.  My question is does the VM have to be powered on to replicate between two 2012 hyper-v servers?  this would not work for me as I need the VM to be powered off to allow for the Double-Take replication.  Another issue might be that Double take process might prevent hyper-v replication in the first place.

Thanks

Hi,

1. Remote Site 1  Upload speed:2.93 Mbps - Download Speed: 2.79Mbps

2. Remote Site 2:   Upload Speed:0.86 Mbps - Download Speed: 1.32 Mbps

3. DataCenter: (60 persistent, 40 pooled)      Upload Speed: 84.88 Mbps - Download Speed: 93.32 Mbps

for WAN VDI infrastructure, is at least 10Mbps required?

Thank you

Configure Virtual firewall that don't route, in Hyper-V.

Playing around with Virtual Firewalls in Hyper-V. At the moment I am using "hybrids" firewalls, VM's that acts both as a firewall and router. I want to advance and use a standalone firewall (Or UTM device) that filters. How do I set this up in Hyper-V?

Copy Cluster Roles wizard (Hyper-V 2012) did not migrated the pass-through disks properly from 2008 r2 sp1 to 2012 r2.

The Copy Cluster Roles wizard did migrated the pass-through disks, Configuration files, CSV storage & VM to the target but fails to bring the VM configuration online/available at target cluster node (unable to power on the VM)

Steps taken to repro the issue:-
1)      We have created a test machine (VM1)
2)      Presented the pass-through disks & CSV storage to both cluster nodes
3)      We have attached two pass-through disks at source cluster
4)      Tried moving the VM from old cluster to new cluster using Copy Cluster Roles Wizard
5)      The Wizard was successfully migrated the VM to target cluster node (without any warnings or errors)
6)      The migration report was successful & VM migrated to target cluster node
7)      The Pass-through disks were migrated to target cluster node
8)      CSV also migrated/created at target cluster node
9)      We have brought the VM storage offline at source server
10)   We brought VM storage (CSV, Pass-through disks) online at target node
11)   We were unable to bring the VM configurations online

Following are the events logged in cluster service during this failure.
Event ID:- 1069, Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine Configuration VM of type 'Virtual Machine Configuration' in clustered role VM failed.
Event ID:-21502, 'Virtual Machine Configuration VM failed to register the virtual machine with the virtual machine management service.

Can someone help with a fix please ?

Hello All,

I have one customer with 16 node Hyper-V cluster, all managed by VMM.

all server are healthy except to one which status is "Need Attention"

after digging into Event logs I found the following event on the problematic server:

Hyper-V-VMMMS Event 14062

Failed to Locate the Default Virtual hard Disk Directory.

Please Verify that the directory exists and try again.

by opening the Hyper-V Manager, and going to the server settings, I found that all the tabs such as Virtual hard disks, Virtual machines, Physical GPU,...etc.) giving Load Failed underneath instead of the default path.

and in the right side window giving the "There was an error loading the data for this setting." error.

the used user is domain admin and i added it to local admins and Hyper-V admins group.

appreciate your help, and thanks in advance.

HyperV Host VLAN tagging not working - Converged Fabric

$

We have a HyperV cluster setup running on Server 2012 R2 boxes. The servers are connected with 10Gb/s Intel 82599 NICs. The connection is broken into 5 separate virtual adapters (Mgmt, Cluster, ISCSI, LM, VM) with bandwidth limits set using the powershell add/set-vmnetworkadapter. The servers are hosted by a 3rd party at their data center, so the subnets used on the additional vNICs have different VLAN IDs, which has been configured with set-vmnetworkadaptervlan. This setup has been working, and guest VMs can use the correct subnets as long as the VLAN is configured.

The issue is the host does not appear to be properly using the VLAN tag any any adapter that requires it. The only adapter the host can use is the management adapter that is untagged. Is there some other area I need to configure for the host to use the other adapters that require a VLAN tag?

PS C:\Windows\system32> get-vmnetworkadaptervlan -managementos

VMName VMNetworkAdapterName Mode     VlanList
------ -------------------- ----     --------
       Management           Untagged
       Cluster                    Access        2973
       ISCSI                      Access        2970
       LiveMigration          Access        2972

Preferred owner optimization possible?

I set up preferred owners in Hyper-V 2012 cluster.  So in the instance where a user migrates a machine to do host work and fails to failback the machine, I would like the vm to go back to its preferred owner.  I can't find any way to do this with the native hyper-v manager of VMM.  I want optimization or some automated process to move machines not located on their preferred owner back to the owner if not paused.

Anyone have a suggestion?  Right now a powershell script automated job is all I can think of.

We created an external trust between two forest and I am able to resolve both domains from each other.

Installed ADMT as per the guidelines https://blog.thesysadmins.co.uk/admt-series-1-preparing-active-directory.html.

When I tried to export the password from Source server I am getting an error says "unable to establish a session with the password export server the source password export server and the target server do not have the same encryption key for the source domain"

Can anyone help me out from this?

Hyper-V 2012 R2 new VM with ISO in DVD boot failed - default SCSI not IDE

$

Hi, have created some VMs fine on 2008R2 and 2012 Hyper-V but now onto 2012 R2, am using the Gen 2 VM and hitting install error when booting them from the 2012R2 RTM .ISO (downloaded straight from Technet) loaded into virtual DVD:

I see from http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/53f901e4-5bd0-4e13-80a2-bca2f57b15e9/hyperv-unable-to-boot-from-cd-or-iso-in-vm-machine?forum=winserverhyperv that Hyper-V seems unable to boot from a synthetic SCSI until guest OS actually installed - so Catch-22! But I can't add an IDE Controller because it's not on the list:

I tried the Integration Services and it seems fine on the Settings (including ticking the only one unticked - Guest Services) although if you need to run them from the DVD, it has the same problem - you can see them loaded (or the Win2012R2 ISO) in the DVD Media but you can't make them run through booting on SCSI!

The physical drives are SATA not SCSI but presumably no matter as Hyper-V runs SCSI virtually, but why does Hyper-V default to SCSI and how do I get the DVD to run off an IDE instead if that is the way to install a base OS from .ISO? Or is there an easier way than all this?

TIA, Phil.

Best Steps/Tips for Prepping Office Network for P2V Migration

$

My organization is relocating to a smaller office when our lease expires this April, so I have been tasked with migrating our network to the new building. We are also using this opportunity to weed out our obsolete equipment and modernize the network. I have less than a year of real world application experience, so the insights of someone well versed in this realm would be greatly appreciated.

We have 8 Windows Servers on the network (2 DCs): 4 are running Server 2003, one server is Server 2000, which really serves no function at this point, and three servers with Server 2008 R2.

The DC's are a 2008 R2 file server which we use to access a database file and access other documents, and the second DC is the Server 2003 with Exchange 2007. Other servers include one being used for Symmantec Endpoint Protection, one for Payroll, and one for Remote Desktop that ties into our SonicWall VPN hardware.

I'm just trying to get the opinions of what I need to be focusing on first? We definitely want to migrate the end of life 2003 Servers to 2012 R2 or possibly 2016 if it is released soon, but the main concern for now would be getting the current servers imaged and placed into a virtual environment that I can have ready to go at the new location quickly. I figured a later migration of the OS's/Exchange would be much easier to complete once everything is virtualized. Possibly something I could gradually roll over rather than having to do everything at the same time.

I need advice on selecting a virtualization solution that would be able to handle all of these servers and then some. Space is a necessity, so a rack mounted piece of equipment would be great. I've been looking at HP's ProLiant series so far. Future scalability is preferred.

Also, I would like to add a NAS for storing server backups on the network, and I was wondering if thisDiskStation DS1513+ would be a wise decision or is there something that would be more redundant and quick for around the same price? (<$1500).

Finally, for ease of migration and administration, I still cannot decide between Hyper-V and VMWare. I'm leaning towards Hyper-V since we are already so invested in Microsoft. All thoughts, advice and suggestions are welcome and encouraged at this phase! Thanks everyone, glad to be a member of the community. :)

Orphaned Virtual Switch / Need to reset hyper-v???

Hi, I am using hyper-v to remotely debug some kernel drivers inside a VM as described here https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/jj200334(v=vs.85).aspx

I created a Windows 10 Pro VM and also created a virtual switch attached to a Network interface. The virtual machine could connect to the internet/Local LAN with no problems and kernel mode debugging of my driver worked without any issues.

This all works fine, however due to incompatibilities with other software I sometimes need to disable Hyper-V, upon re-enabling Hyper-V my virtual switch was shown as disconnected, as if the interface was physically unplugged from the network, if I disabled the virtual switch and reverted back to the Host interface the internet works fine. In an attempt to fix this I probably made the problem worse, at one point the Virtual Switch Manager could not be opened saying that it was unable to enumerate the list of virtual devices.

I have two questions

1) How can I remove the virtual switch from my computer? attempting to use the switch manager resulted in the following error

Switch delete failed, switch = {GUID of Switch}: The device does not recognize the command (0x80070016).

At this point I would just like to be able to reset Hyper-V back to its default configuration and start over, if I try to disable hyper-v at this point windows reports that it is unable to make the changes and turns hyper-v back on.

2) Is their any thing I can do to avoid these problems in the future other than just leaving hyper-v enabled all the time? When I reactivated hyper-v the first time the virtual machine was fine just the virtual switch had issues

while trying to convert VMDK to VHD i am getting error need help

Poor VM Disk Performance After Rebooting Host

$

We've picked up on some strange behaviour recently with high disk queues resulting in very poor performance on our file servers.

Users were reporting that it had become unbearably slow when trying to save any files to any of the file servers. Investigation into this showed that the disk queues were through the roof. A benchmark was run against the virtual disk and it was seen that whilst read speeds were high, we were only seeing write speeds of around 11kb/s. However when the benchmark was run on the physical disk hosting the VHDX speeds were where we would expect to see them.

Originally the disks were dynamic and sharing a virtual SCSI controller. We converted the disk to be fixed and set it up on an additional controller. This sorted the issue and write speeds on the virtual host were vastly improved to where we expect to see them.

Problem: Once the physical host is rebooted the issue returns and we have to remove the virtual disk and SCSI controller, readd the controller and reattach the virtual disk. Once this is done everything works as expected again until the physical host is rebooted again.

Failed to create partition: The hypervisor could not perform the operation because an invalid parameter was specified. (0xC0350005).

I have enabled nested virtualization by running the script.

After then my vm is failed to start with following error.

An error occurred while attempting to start the selected virtual machine(s).

Backing UP

Hi!

One of our Hyper-V VMs is off and stuck on backing up. We could not find any backup schedule or scheduled task on hyper-v server that can cause this issue. The Hyper-v server is windows 2012 Std.

Any Suggestions?

Thanks.
