Hyper-V Role installation fails without reason (Windows Server 2012)

Hi,

We are building a new Hyper-V infratructure, based on Windows Server 2012 Datacanter and multiple HP ML350p Gen8 servers. We've been deploying lost of Server 2012 Hyper-V projects lately (all HP G6 servers), without any problems at all, but this project is a real pain:

We are unable to install the Hyper-V role on any server, at all! There's four of them! All hosts are HP ML350p Gen8, Server 2012 Datacenter, latest updates/firmware/drivers (HP SPP 2012.10.0). BIOS settings are correct/verified for virtualization.
We simply install Hyper-V via Server Manager without any modifications (not selecting any network adapters either, this is all done later using Virtual Network ).

The installation reboots the server, and during boot, the installation fails. After reboot, the Server Manager sais there's been an unexpected error, and have a nice day.

I've been digging through the CBS.log file, and there a very small ERROR portion during installation:

no networking after syspreping server 2008 sp1 r2 vm

Hello,

I have an issue with networking in VM-2008sp1r2 after sysprep.

When start up new VM with syspreped vhd the ip is 169.x.x.x.

The initial machine (before sysprep) didn't have a static address.

I tried to disabale NIC in VM settings before sysprep. Rerun integration services and some other stuff.

Nothing helps.

I found a thread with exactly same issue. The conclusion is that only 2008sp2 has this anomally.

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/thread/2275abfb-2328-4075-852a-7fa5a0387fe4?persist=True

But I am running 2008sp1r2.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Snapshots that don't exist

Hello

I think I have a unique situation whereby my virtual machine XML file says there are 3 snapshots.

However, within HyperV gui there are NO snapshots present. I think this has occured due to a VHD restore from DPM but did not restore the XML file.   There are however snapshot files on the physical drive but the guids don't match the XML file anyway.

Am I safe to delete the rogue snapshot files and what should I do about the XML snapshot entries?

here is the current live XML file - again, the GUI shows NO snapshots.

Best practice for Hyper-V 2012 trunk

Host physical almost drive out of space

Hello

I am fairly new to HyperV and have what could be a complex situation to resolve so hope somebody can help.

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 box running Hyperv 6.1.7601.17514.

One of the physical drives on this server has just 500Mb remaining. This drive is hosting one virtual machine which is a domain controller. (The total usable space by the virtual machine is larger than the physical drive!!)

In order to resolve the space issue, I would like to detach and deleted one of the guest's drives which is a fixed 25GB blank drive. It was hosting NTDS but I have moved this to drive C.

My concerns are that this machine currently has 1 snapshot from 8 days ago. There is a warning on the settings page saying not to edit disks for virtual machines which contain snapshots.

However, does this also mean I cannot remove the hard drive too? The remove button is available to click.

What will happen if I remove this drive, delete the vhd and then in future delete the old snapshot - will the merge process fail?

Also, what is the best practise for resolving physical drive capacity nearly full when the machine contains snapshots and differencing disks?

thanks

Access denied when starting VM.

I checked permissions on the VHD and I set them very loosely, everyone has full control, system has full control, domain users have full control. This is Windows 8 Enterprise Hyper-V.

How do we make this possible.Pls Help on this.

Hyper-V replica saved state

Hello,

Quick question regarding replication; when a VM is replicated, is it supposed to be off or in a saved state? In my POC it was always off, however I did read some documentation that said it was in a saved state (I of course cannot locate it now).

If it is indeed supposed to be off, is there any chance of being able to use saved states in the future?

Hello,

Hardware for Home Lab - ESXi / Hyper-V

$

Hello All,

I'm lacking with hardware knowledge so I hope I can find some help here regarding the processor and motherboard.

My current home lab (3 physical servers) for vSphere and Hyper-V is slowly dying. I'm looking into buying something more current, but as I've got very limited $$ resources I need a box that would allow me to run a nested environment in either of the options:

- Windows 8 & VMware workstation, on top of that few VMs and 2 / 3 virtual hosts (HV2012/ESXi), on top of that a number of VMs to test Clustering/HA etc

or

- ESXi, on top of that VMs and virtual hosts (HV2012/ESXi), on top of that a number of VMs to test Clustering/HA

If possible, I'd like to use Intel i7-870 processor that I have at home, but I'm not sure if it's going to be enough for the job? If yes, please advice on the motherboard. Otherwise, please advice on hardware configuration or oem boxes.

Thank you!

Move Virtual Machine Storage on a Clustered vm = Disk Read Error?

$

Having an issue when moving Virtual Machine Storage on a Clustered vm is breaking (corrupting?) the vhdx.

Setup:

2-node Hyper-V Server 2012 (the free one) Cluster connected to an EqualLogic PS6100E using a CSV.  (2) Teamed (Hyper-V) LAN nics and (3) iSCSI MPIO nics each.

Starting Location:

  • VM named "vv-2012" is built from an ISO and running on a server in the node - NOT added to Failover Cluster Manager as a role yet.
  • Disk lives at "C:\ClusterStorage\volume1\vv-2012\Virtual Hard Disks\vv-2012.vhdx"
  • VM lives at ""C:\ClusterStorage\volume1\vv-2012\Virtual Machines\xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx.xml"
  • Machine is Running at Login Screen directly after setting the local Administrator password
  • Running current Integration Services

Test 1 - From Starting Location - Move VM Storage using Hyper-V Manager - Move just the vhdx one folder up ("C:\ClusterStorage\volume1\vv-2012\vv-2012.vhdx")

  • SUCCESS - vhdx moved and machine still running

Test 2 - From Starting Location - Import into Failover Cluster Manager - Move VM Storage using Failover Cluster Manager - Move just the vhdx one folder up ("C:\ClusterStorage\volume1\vv-2012\vv-2012.vhdx")

  • FAILED - Disk Read error in the running VM as soon as the move starts (see below image)

Test 3 - From Starting Location - Import into Failover Cluster Manager -SHUT DOWN RUNNING VM - Move VM Storage using Failover Cluster Manager - Move just the vhdx one folder up ("C:\ClusterStorage\volume1\vv-2012\vv-2012.vhdx")

  • SUCCESS - Started VM - no errors

Working on the, now, broken vhdx:

- Searching technet (and the Internet - Google/Bing) returns almost exclusively P2V conversions using disk2vhd.exe from Sysinternals.  That is NOT the case here - reading these posts talks about partitions not being imported (boot partition) or incorrect IDE/SCSI settings on imported vhd's.

- Attaching the vhdx to another vm (or my local machine using Disk Management) and running chkdsk returns "Corrupt master file table. Windows will attempt to recover master file table from disk."  "Windows cannot recover master file table.  CHKDSK aborted." (also tried with /F even though screenshot does not show that - same result) - I see the 2 partitions (boot and system) but cannot browse them - marked as RAW

- Running TestDisk returns invalid MFT (I think, not an expert on this program).

Summary:

- Moving vm vhdx's that are turned off either through Hyper-V Manager or Failover Cluster Managerwork fine

- Moving vm vhdx's that are running through Hyper-V Managerwork fine

- Moving vm vhdx's that are running through Failover Cluster Managerbreaks (corrupts?) the vhdx.

So my questions are 3 fold:

  1. Can anyone else reproduce this?
  2. Is it a Hyper-V / Cluster bug?
  3. Can I recover the vhdx?

Wasn't sure if I should post here or Cluster forum?  Both?

:) -Andrew

Do my 2008 R2 Enterprise 4 machine use rights still count?

All of my virtual hosts currently run 2008 R2 Enterprise

Unfortunately the SA has expired so I can't upgrade them at present to 2013.

The no-shared-storage migration and replication of HyperV server 2013 is attractive, however, and that edition IS free.

My question is, if I'm still running at least one licenced 2008 R2 Enterprise Server AS A GUEST on the Hyper-V 2013 host, am I still allowed to run 4 servers per physical host?

Is anyone else experiencing this kind of issue?

Can I have iSCSI shared storage used by both VMWare and Hyper-V

$
0
0

I currently have 3 ESXi VMware hosts that all are attached to a QNAP shared storage using iSCSI. I am trying to insert a new 2012 Hyper-V server into the mix and want to allow it to use the same shared storage. I have the initiator setup on the Hyper-V machine and can see the shared disks on the QNAP but they are offline. When I go to bring one online I get the warning: "If this disk is already online on another server, bring the disk online on this server can cause data loss. Are you sure..." So my question is, should I be doing this at all? Will VMWare and HyperV not play nice together on shared storage? I know very little about HyperV so I am not sure if it is going to try to do something to the disks and kill my VMWare servers that run off of this shared storage.

Thanks

hyper-v cluster and netbios (wmi)

Hey guys,

I have been trying to get WMI monitoring working on my live hyper-v cluster, I have managed to get it working on my single server test box however when attempting this on my live system I found that my wmi user cannot connect to the server, checking everything I found that the netbios port was not open on the network address that I have available to the network.. however I can see that the clustered services has netbios enabled.. now I know that one should not mess with the clustered virtual adapter however I believe netbios needs to be enabled to use the monitoring functionality..

here is a copy of my ipconfig/all (names and ips have been changed and removed...

SR-IOV on Intel S1200 BTLR Xeon E3-1220Lv2

I have installed Windows 2012 Hyper-V Server. The guest VM consists of a couple W2012 Servers simulating a Domain. The hardware is a Intel Intel S1200BTLR board (BIOS is up to date), a Xeon E3 1220Lv2 and a Intel I350 dualport NIC. The I350 support SR-IOV as well as the current driver (V. 17.4) does. The virtual switch is configured to support SR-IOV as well as the NIC in the VMs. However Network Status always shows:

Degraded (SR-IOV not operational)

VMQs are working. The command "(Get-VMHost).IovSupportReasons gives:

SR-IOV cannot be sued on this system as the PCI Express hardware does not support Access Control Services (ACS) at any root port. Contact your vendor for further information.

I really would like to get SR-IOV up and running. Does anybody know if the reason given is the "true" reason? Do I have to configure something (VT-x and VT-d is enabled)?

I also would like to know if someone has gotten SR-IOV successfull running on stock hardware (like different Intel Server Board, for example one for the E5 processors with integrated i350 NIC).

I tried Intels Website to find some more informations regarding "this product is supported" or "this product will be support with the next driver version. But all it gives is some general information about SR-IOV and whitepapers.

How To Config VM IP Address With  API?

To John Howard: Win8 => HV 2012

Hi John (or some other kind soul who might know the answer)

We're pressed for time in trying to evaluate a network upgrade to Hyper-V 2012 running Server 2012 Essentials in a VM. We're currently running an old CentOS PDC amid a hodge-podge of physical WinXP 'servers' and we'd like to consolidate.

Our trouble is that we can't get past first base. Since Hyper-V will be standalone we have to run it in workgroup mode, which in turn is giving us all kinds of fits and headaches connecting to it from a Win8 Pro client machine (also workgroup).

The worst of the lot is the Logical Disk Manager problem. Hyper-V Manager can at least connect, but not without an error message (can't recall it just now but will send it upon request).

How close are you to finishing your HVRemote script update? Since we haven't made a purchase we can't get support and we're loathe to buy a pro incident just so we can complete an evaluation.

I've Binged and Googled 'til my fingers are bleeding and I'm not finding ANYTHING specific to 2012 and not 2008.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jeff Bowman

Huge File Server Upgrade and Virtaulization

Hi everyone. I'm planning to move local ESX4.0 VM and physical servers to Hyper-V. Need your kindly suggestion on the file server virtualization.

It's a Win2003 physical server. Its boot partion is built on local RAID and data volumes are LUNs in EMC Clariion fiber storages. Since I have more than 1 TB data, I plan to create a Win2008 VM and "attach" the data LUNs to the VM to speed up the virtualization. But in 2008R2, pass-through disks must be added into failover cluster. And I remembered that I got data lost warnings when I add other LUN into CSV.

I will be apprieciated for any suggestion on below questions.

1. Can I "attach" NTFS partions created in a Win2003 Server to a Win2008 server?

2. Can I "attach" two LUNs in two fiber storages to one VM?

3. Will I lose data when I create the pass-through disk and adding it into fail-over cluster or CSV?
