Hyper-V server with Lan access only and separate adapter to access to internet

I am stuck with an issue where I need to create a Hyper-V server on Server 2012 DataCentre which has local access only (LAN) and a separate connection for internet access.

I have been scouring the internet and cannot seem to find someone who has/wants to do this..

Is this such a far reaching question.

The VM i am setting up is a RedHat enterprise server which i will be able to figure out how to connect to the different adapters. I am stuck on getting the two adapters done first.

I know you can setup a virtual switch and not sure if this may be the answer to my problems.

Can anyone please direct me how i would do this.

How do I save the VM Operating system without data files

Hi folks,

I need help with the following problem:

On a physical server I separate the OS and the data files by having them on two separate disks and I make disk images of just the OS disk for system backups. Is there a way to accomplish the same thing in a VM? I would like to save (export) the VM without the data files because the data are continuously saved anyway and the VM export file including the data is too big.

 Thanks!

Hyper-V - 'Failed to start the virtual machine 'test' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running.'

Hi all,

Having a bit of a nightmare with Hyper-V on my Windows 8 Pro laptop - Whenever I create a new VM and try to start it I receive the following error;

'Failed to start the virtual machine 'test' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running.'

I sometimes also receive an error saying something along the lines of 'Unable to change virtual machine state'

I have done a lot of searching a seen two common answers - The first is to try removing the Hyper-V role and re-adding it - I have tried this several times to no avail. (Intel VT and all virtualisation capabilities are enabled in BIOS). The second issue it would seem some people have had relates to editing the VMX configuration file and adding the linehypervisor.cpuid.v0 = "FALSE" - I thought VMX files were only present in VMware Virtual Machines...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Hyper-V 2012 Live Migration of Virtual Machine Guest Cluster Node causing cluster resource failures

Hi,

We have an 11 x node Hyper-V 2012 Cluster.  I am in the process of installing additional software updates and hotfixes on all Hyper-V hosts.

We have a 2012 SQL Failover guest cluster with SAN attached storage using virtual HBAs.

The guest cluster node live migrated successfully.  However after the live migration the guest failed to write to one of the disks presented through vhbas and this caused the SQL cluster resource to failover to the other cluster node.

In the event log of the guest cluster node we received the following error:

Log Name:      Application
Source:        MSSQLSERVER
Event ID:      17053
Task Category: Server
Level:         Error
Description:
SQLServerLogMgr::LogWriter: Operating system error 170(The requested resource is in use.) encountered.

And the on the Hyper-V host we were live migrating the virtual machine to received the following error:

Log Name:      Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-SynthFc-Admin
Source:        Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-SynthFcVdev
Event ID:      32214
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Description:
Failed to reserve LUN with Instance Path '' to virtual machine '' with error: The data is invalid. (0x8007000D). (Virtual machine ID )

The source Hyper-V host has the following hotfixes installed:

KB2806542
KB2823643
KB2832478
KB2838043
KB2840681
KB2853422
KB2878635
KB2894032
KB2894464
KB2913695

The destination Hyper-V host had the following hotfixes installed:

KB2806542
KB2823643
KB2832478
KB2838043
KB2840681
KB2853422
KB2878635
KB2894032
KB2894464
KB2913695
KB2916993
KB2928439
KB2929078
KB2929869
KB2996928

The storage array used to present the disks to the guest cluster node does support 2012 and ODX.

We are using HP BL460c Gen8 v2 Blades and HP 3PAR 7400 if that helps.

We have experienced this issue previously but it was on a storage array that did not support 2012 and ODX.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Passing credentials to VMConnect?

All,

I am tasked with developing a solution for a test automation solution on a Hyper-V platform.  The automated tests require the ability to to run tests that interact with the desktop of the VM.  These tests will run as part of the nightly build and deployment and as such there will not be individuals present to unlock/tend to the VM's.  My intent is to establish a VMConnect 'host' that will run some type of script on startup to launch VMConnect sessions to X number of VM's, login to a domain account and be ready to run these UI based automated tests.

Does anyone know this if this is possible with VMConnect or is this something that would need to be implemented via group policy on the VM's?

Also, slightly off topic but I am having difficulties making a VMConnect connection when running via command line, running the app manually works great but when I run via command line I get this:

Hyper-V cannot find a virtual machine with the name '<machinename>'.  Verify that your user account has permission to access virtual machines.  Or use Run as Administrator and try again.

I've tried running from an administrator command prompt and using the runas command with the same results.

Any ideas?

Recommended NIC Config

Hi!

We have a win2012 Hyper-v server with Two Fiber NICs and 4 Ethernet NICs. The VMs are win2008 R2. What is the best practice to use these NICs for best performance? Fiber NICs are still not in use.

Thanks.

What to choose to assign GPU

Hi!

I need to assign GPU to virtual machines in hyper-v 2012 data center server. May we know what option should I select while enabling remote desktop services:

1. Role based or feature based installation

2. Remote desktop services installation

As I was told that it is not possible to assign GPU to a VM having server operating system I have to install a desktop operating system. That means we need separate licenses for every vm we create? Is it correct?

Thanks.

How to run Hyper-V guest at native 30" monitor resolution

I am in the process of migrating a number of production systems to Hyper-V (Running on Server 2008R2) but a requirement is that these run at the native resolution of our 30" monitors in portrait mode (1600x2560). Clients connecting are Windows 7 Professional x64 SP1.

How can i increase the resolution of the guest VM's beyond 1600x1200?? Is it possible to emulate a graphics card or 30" monitor to make these higher resolutions available in display properties?

If I connect using RDP 8.1 (Installed on the clients) and specify the resolution it defaults back to 1600x2048 and leaves black borders at the top and bottom.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Reducing the size of replicas

I have 2 server 2012 r2 servers that are replicating around 1gb every 5 minutes. Both of these servers are DC's with a few file shares on them. Even during the night when nobody is using the file shares they are still replicating large amounts of data. To test, i created a new server promoted it to adomain controller and it only replicates around 80mb on average every 5 minutes. Is there any way i can find out exactly what iscausing large amounts of data to be written? I have DPM on both the file servers, i don't know if that would make a massive difference.

Recreate replication relationship from Replica to Primary using an existing VM

$

Hi,

I'm looking for a way to use an existing VM to re-establish replication from my Replica server back to my primary. Here is my lab setup-

Site A (Primary): Windows Failover Cluster with (2) Hyper-V hosts

Site B (Replica): Single standalone host

I'm replicating a VM from Site A => Site B. I am able to remove replication for this VM successfully, and then re-create the replication relationship by selecting the "Use existing VM as the initial copy..." option.

Unfortunately, this does not work in reverse. I fail over my VM so that Site B is active, and then remove replication. Trying to re-create the relationship (Site B => Site A now) with the "Use existing VM as the initial copy..." option comes back with error: "Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine [...] Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine as Hyper-V is not in a state to accept replication on the Replica Server."

Has anyone run into this before?

KB2878635 / EventID 5142, 5120

Hi there,

We are running a 4 node Windows 2012 Core Hyper-V Cluster with CSVs (free online available w2k12 core) . Since wie tried to backup the VMs at Cluster level using the built-in Windows Backup we are facing the the EventIDs 5142 & 5120 causing downtimes of several VMs due to temporary loss of connectivity to the CSVs.

KB2878635 describes the issue and Powershell (get-hotfix) tells that the hotfix has not been installed yet. Once we try to install it, the Setup Routine tells us that the hotfix is not applicable to the Computer. We checked the file Versions on the System compared to the Versions mentioned in the KB - the KB contains newer Versions...

Any suggestions?

I am trying to debug a phone application from VS 2013 installed in Hyper-V VM on WinSvr 2012 R2. I have a Windows Phone attached to the server via USB however when I go to debug the application I get "Deployment failed because no Windows Phone was detected. Make sure a phone is connected and powered on."

How do I give the VM access to the USB port and the phone?

FIle copy to VM network spikes (Hyper-V Server 2012)

Hello,

I am experiencing a strange problem on my VM's, when i copy a larger file (over 10GB) the file copy starts alright, and speed is good (60-100MB/S), but then suddenly, kind of random, the speed drops and the connections kind of spikes on the target VM.

I have tested my connection to my ISCSI storage, and if i try to copy directly to my CSV speed is good, around 200MB/S, so the problem must be either on the VM NIC or the VM network.

The problem is the same on either one of my cluster hosts (i have 3) , i use SCVMM, if that makes a difference in this case, even though i wouldn't think so.

VMQ is disabled - so that's not the problem.

Thanks!

Events 14050 (failed to register SPN) and 10016 (DCOM permissions) - can't use Hyper-V manager

$

Hi,

Various versions of this question have been asked on the forums and a bunch of different solutions suggested. I've tried all of them but so far with no luck, and that includes saving and running the PS script to increase the TCP port range.

What I really don't understand is how I've got to this point. Everything was running just fine, I could access my Server 2012 R2 machine running Hyper-V from my Windows 10 desktops no problem. Then suddenly one day it stops working. NOTHING CHANGED in my config!

Hyper-V manager works fine locally, so if I RDP to the Server 2012 R2 box I can then bring up Hyper-V manager and launch a VM console etc. The issue is specifically across the network, ie. some sort of firewall problem. My group policy prevents me from simply turning off the firewall although of course I could change it locally for the server machine.

Does anyone have any ideas or ideally a step-by-step to solve this? I've getting 14050 precisely every 2 minutes, and the 10016 DCOM permissions message each time I reboot. I also have event 516 from the DFSN-Server precisely every hour in the "warning" log which in some way relates to namespace but I don't know if that's relevant.

Thanks in advance for your help.

My Hyper-V hosts are high utilization despite the facts that the total memory allocated to VMs are much less than total Ram available. We also do not use Dynamic memory allocation.

Hyper-v new host, network problem inside VM on new host

Hi,
I have replaced one of two cluster nodes (different hardware) and have issue with live migration.
When i live migrate machine to new host network fails and that machine cant ping other machines on OLD host. If i restart that machine on new host it starts to work, if i live migrate it to old host, it works.

VM migrated to new host cant ping VM on another host, both VM's has access to other resources , and i can access the from outside.

It is Windows Server 2012 R2 cluster, old host is using Broadcom BASP for teaming, new host is using Windows teaming(Hyper-v port).
New host also gaves me "MAC conflict: A port on the virtual switch has the same MAC as one of the underlying team members on Team Nic Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver" and cant get rid of it, changed both Team and hyper adapter MAC, still have the error, so i revert it all back...

- name of vSwich is the same
- MAC address of the VM after live migration is from pool of OLD host
- MAC address after reboot on new HOST is from the pool of new host
- also i'm using SCVMM 2012 for LM

Applying Windows updates to Hyper-V hosts in a cluster - 2008R2

$

We have a two-node hyper-v cluster. the hosts have literally never been patched since deployment a few years ago. We'd like to fix that. Is there anything special that we need to do to prepare for patching?

The plan was to move all the VMs to one node, "pause" the other node and apply all the patches and reboot however many times. Then move all the VMs to the patched node and do the same for the other.
