Hyper-V 2012 replica giving timeouts

$

We have two Hyper-V clusters in two separate datacenters. These datacenters are connected with a 100 Mbit/s redundant connection. Redundancies is achieved with spanning tree and the two sites share the same private IP range. In both datacenters are two domain controllers in the same domain. We use Hyper-V replica to replicate about 50 VM's to the secondary datacenter. We use the primary datacenter as our production environment and the secondary datacenter as our failover location, backup location and test environment. When everything was working and all the servers were being replicated the bandwidth that was used over the WAN connection was about 10 - 15 Mbit/s. We use http for replication.

After a failure, which was caused by a rebooting Hyper-V host (wrong configured automated update settings) several VM's stopped with their replication. After that incident I could not get the replication working properly. I get timeouts errors and other error messages indicating that there is no connection at that moment. The replication works but not all the time. Replication status are going to warning when more than 20% of the replication cycles are missed. Eventually we even see a status of critical on several VM's. After that we have to resume the replication manually.

I have the feeling that this is caused by the limited amount of bandwidth that is available. I had to do a complete new initial replication for some servers because these servers would no longer resume replication after a manual resume command. Even the resynchronization command did not work, so I had to stop the replication and start again. The problem is that the initial replication uses all the available bandwidth and I have the feeling that there is not enough bandwidth left for the regular replication of the other VM's and that this is causing the timeouts. I am however not sure about this theory. Is it possible that initial replications drain so much bandwidth that regular replications are getting timeouts or is there a mechanism that prevents this. Are there possible other causes of these problems?

below you see the error messages that I frequently get. I get these errors on VM's with a normal replication status as well as VM's with a warning status or a critical status.

This may be because there is a pending replication operation in the Replica server for the same virtual machine which is taking longer than expected or has an existing connection. When joining Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 core to domain, it's not manageable anymore

Hi,

We're experiencing a very strange error when joining a Hyper-V machine to our domain. After joining the machine to the domain and give it a reboot, it isn't manageable any more via the Hyper-V MMC or 59-Manager. I'm getting the "RPC server is unavailable" error.

If i join it to the domain without applying any group policy to it, it remains manageable, even after rebooting it multiple times. At the moment i apply a group policy to it (no matter which), i'm getting the error.

I've spend a lot of hours research on it, and tried several changes on GPO's, but still haven't found a solution for it.

Is there any one who recognises my issue, and have a possible solution for it?

Any help will be appreciated, and thanks in advance!

VM Rebooting every few days

Hello  I have host machine running 2008 R2 with 4 VM's.   The problem is two of the VM's restart every couple of days.  The host was restarted over the weekend and that seemed to help for a bit then it came back.  The only errors I can find on the host about that time is  Source VHDMP ID 2 and  ID 4.  There are no other errors or warnings the hour prior to that.  Any ideas?

SUSE SLES11 SP3 in HyperV cannot ping default gateway

Hello,

i have installaed sles11 s3 in a 2012 HyperV server and my network administrator sees my mac (the result of ifconfig) and says that everything should be ok from network perspective.

Still, i cannot ping the default gateway (destination host unreachable)

I have used a legacy provider and the network/vlan configuration is identical to a windows machine that is already working perfectly.

I have 2 network cards in both the machines.

I have tried to switch the network configuration of the cards, but still didn-t work.

I have heard that there is bonding between the mac address displayed in sles and the one configured in HyperV but i have no idea what exactly should be done,

Any ideas?

Thanks

Elli

Ill currently have a win 2008 server and several Windows 7 desktop pc's with their own HDD connecting to the server. I want to add some thin clients (no local HDD) to my existing environment connecting through RDP.
Is it possible to have a mixed environment (desktop pc and thin clients) Do i have to keep something in mind when installing RDP into an existing environment?

Hyper V - Loosing external network trafic after creating vswitch

Hi there

I'm running into an issue with a new server.

As soon as I create a vswitch using the physical network interface I'm loosing incoming traffic to this server (rdp, ping...) BUT I can still connect using the HyperV console

From the server itself, there is no network issue (can ping other machine, rdp...)

If I remove the vswitch, everything is going back as expected

I have already check lot of thing (based on some blogs, including MS ones) with no luck. Even did a full reinstall of the OS

Any idea? Please don't tell me the firewall as this is not the issue - firewall rules are applied using GPO and other HyperV server don't have any issue

Thank you

CSV unavailable to one node, VMs don't failover

$

Hi All,

I had this situation:

Environment:

- 2 nodes Hyper-v cluster

- 2 CSV

- NODE1 is running 2 VMs on CSV1 and 2 VMs on CSV2

Issue:

- NODE1 loses connection to CSV1

- NODE1 logs Evnet ID 4096 at 00:01 in Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-Config/Admin about VM111 and VM112, both standing on CSV1

- NODE2 logs 2 events ID 1167 in System Log at 00:03 (VM111 degraded and VM112 degraded)

- at 00:05 VM111 and VM112 are off (dirty shutdown)

Question:

since NODE2 didn't lose the connection to CSV1 and it knows that the VMs on NODE1 are degraded, why it didn't initiate a failover?

Hyper V VDI memory grows quickly and exceeds memory maximum

I have created 4 virtual desktops, all running Windows 7 32 bit, on a Windows Server 2008 R2 server.  3 of them are working fine and have no problems.  The fourth one is growing over its maximum capacity for memory and no idea why.  All that I have done with it is Windows Updates.  The hard drive had a set maximum of 127 GB and it grew to 130 GB over night.  It was only in the testing stage and not even deployed to anyone to use as I was getting ready to install an application but hadn't yet.  Any ideas what could have caused it and what I can do to keep it from happening again?

SCVMM 2012 SP1 Virtual Switch on Cluster Node Disappears

$

I have been running into an interesting but an alarming issue with virtual switches. I have recently built a 4 node Server 2012 Hyper-V failover cluster. I have built numerous 2008R2 and 2012 Hyper-V clusters before, so I am pretty familiar with the process. I have rebuilt my VMM due to software problems, and on this new cluster, I have configured the virtual switches with nic teaming on 2 of the virtual switches.

I have 4 clusters being managed by this VMM.. and this newly built cluster keeps losing all of the VMM virtual switch configurations, meaning if I go to properties on the problem host and click on virtual switches, its blank. Refresh host cluster flags all virtual machines in this cluster as "Unsupported Configuration," making the vm unmanageable via VMM.

Information (26844)
Virtual switch (Virtual Switch Name) is not highly available because the switch is not available in host (One of the Hyper-V Hosts).

Recommended Action

All virtual servers on that host still has connectivity, as all virtual switch configs are normal when looking at it with Hyper-V Manager or Failover Cluster Manager..

The workaround is to evacuate the host using Failover Cluster Manager and reboot the host. Then refresh the host. Then refresh the VM's. I cannot consider this a 'workaround' as I cannot be rebooting my hyper-V hosts every week.. and migrating virtual servers constantly just for this reason. (DPM backups have a FIT with csv's if it tries to backup a vm on a same csv as another vm thats being migrated.)

I have been wrestling with this problem for a few weeks now. The cluster has been slicked and completely rebuilt.. Still same problems. Has ANYONE else out there seen this issue? Does ANYONE out there suggest a way to go about further troubleshooting this issue?

I have a server with 10 VLANs and configured as TAGGED some of them.
My question. Now I have all NICs with gateway, each with its corresponding VLAN.
I suppose that it is not the ideal. as you would be?

Update and Reboot of Hyper-V servers

$

Hi,

We would like to get info or Microsoft recommendation about hyper-v update. How often is best practice to update because we need to manually turn off VM's (for security reasons and to avoid problems) and reboot hyper-v and that costs our clients a lot. We are updating our servers through Kaseya and we cannot reboot Hyper-V servers every week because of one update (sometimes).

Hope that someone can share with me best practice or what we can do?

Best regards/Jimmy

Hyperv-V 2012 R2 Failover Cluster questions

Hi,

I've built a Hyper-V cluster. It all looks good, but just one question I had: If I want to have granular control on which NIC  (and thus IP) is used to communicate to the ISCSI target, how could I do this? In the target settings, I chose the DNS name for the initiators that connect to the target, but the initiators (i.e. Hyper-V nodes) have more than one IP address.

Also, the nodes have 8 NICs but I only see two network connections in Hyper-V Manager?

Thanks

Host and Guest - 2 external IP's

Hi all,

At the moment I have a server that has an external IP address on it, and the datacenter has given me another IP for it. The host OS is Windows 2012 R2 Datacenter.

I also want to have another Server 2k12 R2 guest running on it. However, I want to use IP1 on the host and IP2 on the guest. All the times I have done this before it hasnt worked. Does anyone have any documentation to do this? Is it a case that I don't configure the 2nd IP on the host and just assign it to the guest (through the public switch). All the times that I have done this before, it has been a case of either the host or the guest has external access, and not both at the same time, which is what I want.

Is this possible, if so, How do I do it?

Thanks

Harry

Can we install Hyper-V and Oracle DB 11g in the same machine ? Is this against Hyper-V's best practices ?

Hi,

We have a big server which has Hyper-V and some virtual machines running there. Our product has some wierd issues when running on Oracle DB in a virtual machine so we want to install Oracle directly to the physical server. We can limit the RAM and CPU usage of Oracle DB in order to not interfere with Hyper-V. Is this against Hyper-V's best practices ?

Installing RemoteFX on Windows Server 2012 r2

Hello.

I have tried to set up an Server environment at home for test and education purposes.

On my physical computer I have installed Windows Server 2012 r2 Datacenter and have installed a Hyper-V VM (Windows Server 2012 r2 Standard) as a domain controller.

Then I want to install a Hyper-V VM with Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 as a client.

But when I check my Hyper-V settings it want select my GPU. Its greyed out.

And I have checked out a lot of articles on forums and see that I need RemoteFX installed on the server to enable this possibility.

But when I install the role Remote Desktop - Remote Desktop Virtualization host  the server tells me that I need to configure a RD Licensing server. And that I have 120 days to activate this.

Then I have checked out a lot of articles aboute this. And I must say that this is very complicated just for the possibility to activate/forward the phsyical GPU into the VM.

Isn`t there any other way to get the phsyical GPU into the VM than to install the whole licensing system on the server?

And even if I installed the Broker, Licensing server and so on, and activated the licensing server and did everything I could regarding this I was told that I had 120 days to activate the licensing server. I even tried the fixes I found from this forum (to edit something in the register and to edit or make a new group policy and so on...) I get the activation message.

can a VM os be installed on an entire physical disk? like instead of creating a vhd\vhdx can one just use the whole drive?

Unable to run "connect-virtualdisk" in Windows Hyper-V Server R2?

$

Greetings,

I just did a re-installation of my server that was running Windows Server 2012 R2 and decided to install Hyper-V Server R2 instead as I want to be running everything within Hyper-V / virtual machines. So I decided to replace the native installation with Hyper-V Server R2 instead, so I have the most resource efficient system at the bottom, dedicating all my hardware and resources to the various virtual machines it will be running.

This is the first time I'm dealing with "Core" and not "GUI" in terms of Windows Server, but that didn't prove to be much of a problem. I do have one big problem though, it seems to me like I'm unable to import my Windows Server Storage Pool and Virtual Disk configuration from the Server 2012 R2 installation?

Running Get-VirtualDisk in PowerShell shows my VirtualDisk, but I don't seem able to actually attach the virtual disk. Is this some kind of limitation with Hyper-V Server R2? Are you not supposed / allowed to use Windows Storage Pools? Connect-VirtualDisk does not seem to work.

I only have a 40GB SSD for the Hyper-V Server R2 installation I need to get my 10x 2TB pool and virtual disk attached in order to store my VHDX files for the various virtual machines. Do I really have to re-install Windows Server 2012 R2 and simply strip out all functionality using the Server Manager Roles and Features list in order to get this to work?
