Missing Mass storage driver Installing Hyper-V 2012 Server (works fine on Server 2012 R2)

$

I would like to install Hyper-V Server 2012 on my Dell PE1950 with PERC 6/i controller

Booting from CD, Just after 'install now' it complains that a mass storage driver is missing, and no matter what I download from dell via USB stick, it says no driver found

I can install W2K3 R2, W2K8R2 and W2K12 R2 & XenServer without issue - its the darn Hyper-V server that complains

Any thoughts?

Network issue on VM

Hello,

i'm currently installing a third party antivirus product with IDS functionality and all the servers hosted on hyper-v servers (both 2012 and 2012 R2) shows portscan attempts in the firewall logs. I'm trying to find the reason for this behavior and it seems that the VM's nic is act as it was in promiscuos mode and capture packet that are not directed to nor originated from the VM.

Anyone alse saw a similar behavior or have some idea to solve this strange issue?

Thank you in advance.

Failing to create a new VM with Error: This user isn't allowed to sign in to this computer. (0x80070531).

Running Windows 2012 R2 Datacenter, with Hyper-V role installed, domain joined, domain account is both a local admin and a hyper-v admin.

If I try to create a new virtual machine (either via UI, or powershell) I get the following error:

The Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service encountered an unexpected error: This user isn't allowed to sign in to
this computer. (0x80070531).

This seems very odd to me since I'm not doing this remotely. Does anyone have any clues as to what is going on? (as a google/bing/duckduckgo search didn't return anything valid).

I've tried removing and reinstalling the Hyper-V Role (with required reboots), but the error persists.

Hi,

When I break and then re-enable replication, its doing a full initial copy

1. Is it possible to break and re-enable replication without doing a full initial copy?

Thank you

2012 hyper-v replica page file best practice

$

Hello,

As I understand the best method of excluding page file and have a good planned failover, is to initially exclude the page file on a separate VHDX, then shut down system, and copy the VHDX with the page file and attach to replica before booting.

1. Is this the best method of getting a replica VM up and running without errors with the page file?

2. Is it ok to leave the page file off completely, and let the replica re-create temporary page file when it boots up, thinking in terms of File Servers, and SQL servers.

Thank you

VM Rebooting every few days

Hello  I have host machine running 2008 R2 with 4 VM's.   The problem is two of the VM's restart every couple of days.  The host was restarted over the weekend and that seemed to help for a bit then it came back.  The only errors I can find on the host about that time is  Source VHDMP ID 2 and  ID 4.  There are no other errors or warnings the hour prior to that.  Any ideas?

Hyper-V Replica in a workgroup environment

I'm trying to set up Hyper-V Replica between two Windows 2012 R2 hosts.   They are not part of a domain, but they do belong to the same workgroup.

On the secondary host, I enabled it as a Replica server and selected Kerberos for the authentication mode.  I also selected "Allow replication from any authenticated server".  I then ran the Enable Replication wizard on the primary server and went through the wizard.  After clicking Finish, I get a "Enabling replication failed" error dialog with this message:

     Hyper-V failed to enable replication.

Hyper-V failed to authenticate using Kerberos authentication.

Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine 'xxx': No credentials are available in the security package (0x8009030E).

Hyper-V failed to authenticate the Replication server YYY using Kerberos authentication.  Error: No credentials are available in the security package (0x8009030E).

The one post I found that talked about this issue in a workgroup environment, http://www.chicagotech.net/win8&2012/replicaissue1.htm, suggested making sure that Everyone and Authenticated Users have permission to "Access this computer from the network" in local policies.  Did that on both machine and that didn't help.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Richard

Problem updating multiple SQL tables

$

Hello,

We are using Hyper-V with Windows 7.0 Enterprise SP1 as guest OS, on Windows 8.1 workstations to be able to run multiple versions of a Application we are working with.

This software is used to setup and store large configurations in a database (Acess, SQL Server, Oracle...). ODBC Manager is used to establish connections to all databases we use. The Application uses many forms, each saving data in a specific table.

All is working good except when a form tries to update multiple tables (master-details); only the first table (master) is updated and we experience a crash from the Application. The problems seems to come from the fact we are running this Application in a Hyper-V VM...

In all, 3 similar workstations, with Hyper-V setups, are experiencing this problem. Workstations with he same version of the Application installed (NO Hyper-V) are able to update the same databases successfully.

I tested with Oracle and SQL Server (both local and on network server) with same result. I can use Access successfully for this operation, no problem both locally and on a net share.

I will continue to test trying to trace with a local SQL Server instance but would like to get ideas what to look for. I suspect Transactions but yet to find a error message which could help me pinpoint the problem...

Any help appreciated at this point !

Thanks,

Michel

Upgrading Hyper-V (WinSer2012 -> WinSer2012R2)

I have been trying to upgrade our windows server 2012 installation that is running hyper-v, but have a problem with the physical nic. The issue is that upon finalising the upgrade, WinSer2012R2 presents a BSOD (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL) and the only hardware device I cannot remove prior to the upgrade is the NIC so I assume this is giving me the grief.

I have tried to remove the NIC driver, but Hyper-V depends on it (all vPcs depend on it as well as a logical switch).

How can I remove the physical NIC? Is my only option to reconfigure all vPcs to have no NIC and delete the logical switches? This is a lot of work to reconfigure and error prone as well.

I would have checked log files for the boot, but for some reason, WinSer2012R2 does not create any log entries or memory dumps for me to look at. So all I have is the above mentioned BSOD hint.

Suggestions?

VM bluescreen on Hyper-V node failback

$

Hello,

Have Hyper-V cluster of 3 nodes, using SMB 3 share as storage.

Each cluster node has the team of two nic's for all traffic (storage, management, cluster and live migration).

If i disconnect all two network cables from one host. Then all vm's fails over to other hosts, as expected.

after 2-5 minutes i connect lan cables back to server and when "failed" cluster node joins the cluster, VM's which failovered gets bluescreen and reboots.

Why?

If i reboot the disconnected server, then VM's don't get bluescreen.

If i restart vmms services on disconected node, after connection of lan cables VM's did not get bluescreen.

Passing credentials to VMConnect?

$

All,

I am tasked with developing a solution for a test automation solution on a Hyper-V platform.  The automated tests require the ability to to run tests that interact with the desktop of the VM.  These tests will run as part of the nightly build and deployment and as such there will not be individuals present to unlock/tend to the VM's.  My intent is to establish a VMConnect 'host' that will run some type of script on startup to launch VMConnect sessions to X number of VM's, login to a domain account and be ready to run these UI based automated tests.

Does anyone know this if this is possible with VMConnect or is this something that would need to be implemented via group policy on the VM's?

Also, slightly off topic but I am having difficulties making a VMConnect connection when running via command line, running the app manually works great but when I run via command line I get this:

Hyper-V cannot find a virtual machine with the name '<machinename>'.  Verify that your user account has permission to access virtual machines.  Or use Run as Administrator and try again.

I've tried running from an administrator command prompt and using the runas command with the same results.

Any ideas?

Hyper V - Loosing external network trafic after creating vswitch

Hi there

I'm running into an issue with a new server.

As soon as I create a vswitch using the physical network interface I'm loosing incoming traffic to this server (rdp, ping...) BUT I can still connect using the HyperV console

From the server itself, there is no network issue (can ping other machine, rdp...)

If I remove the vswitch, everything is going back as expected

I have already check lot of thing (based on some blogs, including MS ones) with no luck. Even did a full reinstall of the OS

Any idea? Please don't tell me the firewall as this is not the issue - firewall rules are applied using GPO and other HyperV server don't have any issue

Thank you

I´m doing backup using a simple script in my WIn2012R2

A batch file is combined with a simple set of commands in a diskshadow.txt file (see below)

There´s NO snapshots created (ever) and in the log file The robocopy part of the script) it appears:

SQL 2012 NIC getting disabled after abnormal shutdown of host server

We have 3 HVS(2 SQL 2012 and one Win 2012 server) running on Host server with windows 2003.Whenever the Host server abnormally reboots only SQL server(Windows 2012) NIC is losing the connectivity with domain(Unable to connect to DB), though we are able to connect the server via RDP(FIX- To RDP to SQL server and enable the NIC). Also it is happening only for SQL server but not for other virtual running in windows 2012. Please share your insights

Network Connection Showing Teamed NICS 1 and 2 Instead of the Network Name. Also No WINS Servers Detected.

Good afternoon,

I am almost done with configuring a new Hypervisor running Windows Server 2012 R2.

I have noticed that when comparing this server to the exisiting Windows Server 2012 Hypervisor, there are slight differences in the network area of things.

I have attached the screen shots with the differences to this post for your review.

Network Connection Details On Current Hyper-V Server Host (Left) vsNetwork Connection Details On New Hyper-V Server Host (Right):

Why is the new server not showing any IPv4 WINS Servers and why is the NetBIOS over Tcpip not showing to be enabled?

I would prefer that the new server has the IPv4 WINS Server addresses displayed in the Network Connection Details.

I have checked the configuration for IPv4 on the current Hyper-V server and the server does not have any entries for WINS Servers and NetBIOS is set to default.

Network Connection View On Current Hyper-V Server Host (Left) vs Network Connection View On New Hyper-V Server Host (Right):

Why am I seeing both bridged NICS on the new Hyper-V server? I would prefer that the network connection displayed the network to which the server is connected to, just like you can see on the current Hyper-V Server.

The new server is on the network without problems. I am just interested as to why I am seeing these differences.

Please provide any suggestions that will be of help to me and which can assist me in resolving this.

Thanks in advance!

DPC_Watchdog_Violation - Transferring files through Hyper-V switch on Host Server (NOT Teamed)

$

I've recently replaced a PERC H310 RAID controller with a PERC H710p RAID controller on a Dell PowerEdge R820 running Windows Server 2012 R2 and started experiencing this problem. Everything I've investigated so far doesn't point to this being the issue, but wanted to mention it in case someone encountered something similar.

We were having terrible disk performance until the RAID card was swapped out, and as a precaution I moved all existing VMs off of this Hyper-V host server. Once everything was back up and running, I began a live migration back to the affected host server and it blue screened. Tried again and same result. I then tried copying the VM images manually through a UNC share and hit the same problem. It doesn't always happen at the same time during the copy. I've had blue screens happen 4-5 GB into a transfer, and 200 GB into a transfer.

I've updated the RAID controller driver and firmware to the latest available from Dell, and have installed the latest BIOS and chipset driver. The server has Broadcom 5720 series NICs, updated with the latest drivers and firmware provided by Dell. All Windows/Microsoft updates have been applied.

After all these firmware/driver updates the blue screens still kept occurring during network transfers. All the minidumps show a 0x133 DPC_watchdog_violation error, where the DPC time allotment is 500 ticks and the blue screens happening at 501 ticks. Running the minidumps through Windows Debugger pointed to tcpip.sys, netio.sys, and vmswitch.sys initially. Since tcpip.sys and netio.sys aren't typically the issue, I looked around for anything related to vmswitch.sys being the problem.

I disabled the Hyper-V vSwitch in the OS and did a transfer 100% successfully, with the traffic running through the same NIC the vSwitch was configured to use. Once I re-enabled the vSwitch and transferred more files......the blue screen came back.

In researching, I found reports of this issue when a Hyper-V host was using NIC Teaming. We don't have any of the NICs on this server teamed, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to apply the latest hotfix that addressed the issue.3031598 - even after applying it I was getting more bluescreens. I couldn't find a way to use the updated vmswitch.sys that came with the hotfix (6.3.9600.17714); I tried deleting and recreating the vSwitch, but the old driver (6.3.9600.16384) is what gets applied and searching the OS for an updated driver doesn't turn up anything. I also can't find any info online about manually updating the driver after applying a hotfix.

I'm fairly certain vmswitch.sys is the issue, but I don't know where to go from here. Are there any NIC or vSwitch settings I can adjust to help with this? Has anyone encountered a similar issue? Can anyone lend a hand in diagnosing this issue? I found some good resources on debugging and troubleshooting this issue further (2 URLs below), but this has gone from "this is a good learning experience" to "this needs to get done" in the few weeks I've been troubleshooting.

I have a Windows server 2012 standard running hyper v, on that I have two VMs 1 is  a domain controller for the network it is the only dc on the network. it is also running windows server 2012 standard, the domain controller has recently been losing internet connection, when I restart the dns client service connection returns, there are no events in the event viewer that could explain it. If I try to browse to a website and the run troubleshooter I get the error "website  is online but isn't responding to connection attempts" I can ping web addresses and get a response. The host doesn't lose connection at all it's just the VM.

Can not start VM

The VM fails to start. The server is Windows Server 2012 R2 datacenter. It is a virtual server in Azure. I checked the event log and the event IDs are 15130 and 20144. This full error says:

This application encountered an error while attempting to change the state of "VM"

"VM" failed to start.

Failed to start the virtual machine 'VM' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running.

'VM' failed to start.

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to start the virtual Machine 'VM' because one of the Hyper-V Components is not running.

I've tried everything I have come across to no avail. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Lost connectivity to the Host but can get to a Guest machine. Need to get to the host to repair the config.

Greetings,

I have a Hyper-V server that is far away and that I have very limited access to except for remote desktop. I have only a single link to that machine.

Just now, I made a change in the host's virtual switch and that got the static IP config reset. There is no DHCP in the network. Thus, I lost the ability to get to the host machine and fix the IP static configuration.

However, the change I've made successfully linked the guests to the network, so I can RDP to them.

Now, I really can't get to the host physically, politics. Is there any way I can get from the guests to the host and change the card's IP configuration? We're talking about Windows Server 2012 either on the host and the guests.

Thank you all.

Regards,

J
