Hyper-V 2012 standard - Guest VM aren't shutting down properly when host server shuts down.

We have a server 2012 standard hosting 2 Hyper-V machines, one is our Exchange and the other our App server.

We had a power outage last night and it looks that the host shut down cleanly but the VM's did not.I checked the event logs and the VM's are showing an unexpected shut down exactly the same time as the Host server. The host server event logs is showing "Event 6006" which to me is a clean shutdown.

Hyper-V Guest Shutdown Service is running on both VM's. On the Host that service was set to "Manual (Trigger Start)". I'm not sure what that means but I changed it to "Automatic (Trigger Start)"

Also, I tried to start HV Guest Shutdown Service on the host server but it just starts and stops. Is that because the startup type is set to "Trigger start"?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Help with domain migration of a HyperV ( csv ) CLUSTER on Windows 2008R2

Hello everyone ,

In our environment we have 3 physical machines running Windows 2008 R2, under the " domain.local ";

Server1 -> Primary Domain Controller

Server2 -> Node 1 of cluster Hyper V

Server 3 -> Node 2 Cluster Hyper V

Server 2 and Server 3 share CSV storage mode , and contain multiple virtual machines

We need to migrate all machines to a new domain , but I'm very lost on how to do and not lose the cluster. Can anyone help me and tell me please  the steps to migrate this environment from the old domain to the new domain ?

do i have mount a parallel cluster in the new domain and then, migrate one by one all the virtual machines?

Thank you very much , any help is welcome

Host and VMs network configuration

Hi,

We have additional Network cards on the Host hyper-v server. Does it make sense to configure Host and VM network in this way?

Host network configuration for Hyper-v virtual network switch:

1NIC  ---
2NIC  --- host_team_1

3NIC ---
4NIC --- host_team_2

VM network configuration:

host_team_1 ---
host_team_2 --- VM_team_1

Would we benefit from this configuration?

Thanks

Cannot Replicate VM

Hi

We are using Server 2012 (not R2), we have a 4 node Hyper-V Cluster and a 2 node SOFS with about 70 VMs.  We have been using this setup for about 15 months successfully.

We have also been using Hyper-V Replica successfully for this amount of time for 2 SQL servers and various other servers such as Terminal Servers and File Servers.

We have rebuilt one of our SQL Servers and have setup replication again for it however as soon as Initial Replication has completed the VM goes into "Resynchronisation Required" state.  If I then Resume Replication the result is the same - Initial Replication works but as soon as that is done we go back to "Resynchronisation Required".

We are replicating over a dedicated 100MB/s lease line and the remote storage has 4 X 15K drives in a RAID10 and is used for nothing but this SQL Server.  The combined size of the Primary VMs OS, DB & Logs VHDX drives is approx. 500GB.

I have run the replication overnight when no one is using the systems and backups have completed.  I have also tried to do the Initial Replication via external media but before I have even imported the Primary VM into the Replica server we go into "Resynchronisation Required".

Historically speaking this SQL Server has replicated without issue.  We are using the EnableWriteOrderPreservationAcrossDisks  cmdlet to keep each disk in sync.

Does anyone know what would cause a VM to go into this state so quickly after Initial Replication?

Many thanks

MPIO Dual Controller ALUA BSOD in Cluster

Hello,

I'm having issues with iSCSI MPIO on ALUA-enabled dual controller SAN (Promise VessR2600tiD).
The device is 2012 R2 certified (http://www.windowsservercatalog.com/item.aspx?idItem=752f327a-05c8-ec2a-95c5-671460e6b7a9&bCatID=1282) with current firmware. We are running VM workloads on 2 LUN's atm over dedicated 10G iSCSI connections (Intel X540-T1/T2 NIC's) in a 2-node Hyper-V cluster.

The NIC's have stripped down protocol support (ipv4 only with jumbo frames) and dedicated subnet.
Everything works fine until mpio kicks in. When I try to failover a controller on the SAN (change preferred one), I get strange BSOD's msdsm.sys.

What's stranger is that I basically tried this recently:
2x Hyper-V servers in a cluster, no MPIO, on LUN1, LUN2 on CTRL 1
1x STANDALONE server WITH MPIO on LUN3 (Lun masking turned on) on CTRL2

If I change ALUA preference on LUN3 -> CTRL1, Hyper-V cluster servers get BSOD, not the standalone server. Also,
on the standalone server, the Path State stays Active/Optimized, although TPG State changes to standby and the second portal becomes active.

The vendor wasn't able to help me and I'm kinda at wit's end here. It seems that no matter what server I try to setup MPIO on, the cluster servers get BSOD, even if the server with MPIO is not a part of the cluster nor it shares LUN with the cluster. There's nothing in the server nor SAN logs.

Event ID 32086 followed immediatly by Event ID 32022

I am trying to perform a reverse replication after an unplanned failover in a lab environment. I receive the following two errors:

Event ID 32086

Hyper-V suspended replication for virtual machine 'hsral-test-svr1' due to a non-recoverable failure. (Virtual Machine ID 7A21E1DB-2365-4424-B5F0-8B0BFACDFF83). Resume replication after correcting the failure.

Event ID 32022

Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'hsral-test-svr1': One or more arguments are invalid (0x80070057). (Virtual Machine ID 7A21E1DB-2365-4424-B5F0-8B0BFACDFF83)

The replication fails at 88% everytime. I can resume replication and it completes. But I am not sure how to start troubleshooting why the failure occurs.

Thanks for the help

DVMQ, RSS & vRSS - What can coexist?

$

Hello all,

I'm in the process of testing a new HyperV 2012 r2 build on a pair of servers, each with two 10GBe NICs. On each server I've LBFO teamed these NICs (Switch Independent, Dynamic Mode) and connected a HyperV switch. On each host I've created vNICs for Management, CSV, LM and two foriSCSI. Outside of this single team of two NICs, I have no other networking on these boxes, I'm fully converged. It's my understanding that since I'm fully converged and using dVMQ for each NIC, I won't have RSS as they can't co-exist?

If so, I understand and accept this. My next question is, and this may sound silly but, without RSS, does that mean I also can't have vRSS in my VMs? If I'm understanding the technology correctly, the host-level requirement for vRSS is only dVMQ and not RSS.

I assume I'm wrong here because in my testing, with dVMQ configured correctly on the host (I believe) and vRSS enabled on the VMs - I still see all networking traffic on a single core of my VM. Or is it possibe and I'm misconfigured?

Lastly, is it worth it (or even possible) to not use dVMQ and therefore enable RSS on my pNICs?

Thanks a ton!

Recommendations for Sizing Hyper-V

Hi there,

I've two servers http://www8.hp.com/emea_middle_east/en/products/proliant-servers/product-detail.html?oid=5195898 with 128GB Memory and 4 Gigabit Ethernet.

I want to run multiple AD instances, File Server, SQL, Exchange & Sharepoint on it. Data will be on a SAN. We've around 100 users. Other than Exchange, rest of the roles have minimal load. e.g., SQL is only for supporting management and monitoring systems. is it OK if I run each VM on RAID 0 disk? My theory is that if a disk fails, the service will resume from the other server. It's difficult to assess the current load of servers as there are many under different domains and stand alone systems as well. My plan is to consolidate them all. Running Hyper-V from USB is a recommended practice or is it supported only development systems? It would help me use one more disk for VM if I can run Hyper-V from USB in production. I understand that AD 2012 R2 is fully supported on VMs now. The old recommendation of having the primary DC on a physical server still valid? Our is a small setup.

I'm sure many of you have gone through these scenarios. Please share your experiences. Also if there are easy to follow books or articles on these subject, please point that out too.

Thanking you,

Shereef

Lost Admin Password

I have a server 2008 r2 vm running on a hyperv server 2008 r2 server.

I can log into the local admin account on the hyperv server and have full powershell access etc on that server.

Someone reset the Domain Admin password and forgot it.  I am looking for a way to mount an ISO on the virtual server so I can reboot and try the password crack CD I have.  I have used this CD successfully before on physical machines.

I can only think that I should be able to mount the ISO on the VM from the hyperv server and reboot the VM.

Is there another way?

Hyper V 2012 , error cant access the virtual machine settings

Hello Guys,

we have 2 Hosts installed with Windows Server 2012 Standard. These 2 Hosts are configured as an Failover-Cluster. Also we have an IBM Storwhize connected directly via SCSI to both hosts. Its configured as a shared volume in Failover Cluster Manager.

we have the following problem:

From time to time, when i want to open hyper-v settings on host002 , i cant access this, i get this error:

cant access hyper-v settings, running out of memory or disk

But my disk space and RAM is OK. the strange thing is that the virtual machines are accesable via RDP.

To solve this issue temporarily i have to reboot HOST002. If i reboot host002 then it works, but host001 has the same problem.. I think its an issue with the Failover Configuring, because all that started when we have shutted down both servers, then i think failover cluster wanted to move these virtual machines (high availability) and then get in errors.

it would be very glad if anyone can help me (remote or whatever)

All virtual machines are running perfectly, but i cant access the settings and our backup tool VEEAM cant backup the virtual machines..

Thanks Edmond

Unable to get IP address of Hyper-V guest when EnabledState of Msvm_ComputerSystem class is 2 ( for running).

Though the Hyper-V VM is in running state and if the VM is not completely brought up then the IP address of the VM is not obtained using GuestIntrinsicExchangeItems of  Msvm_KvpExchangeComponent class.

Is there any way to get IP address and FQDN of guest in such cases?

Can we get the appropriate state of the Hyper-V guest?

GetVirtualSystemThumbnailImage with VBScript

Hey All!

I am writing an HTA application (some of you may have seen some of my other questions), and I am now stuck on the thumbnail image of a VM. I am taking the VBScript example from here:

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc160707(v=vs.85).aspx

with slight modifications for root\virtualization\v2, but when I run it, all I get is a WScript.Echo "Done" and a log file with "Done" in it. I see two subs in the example to write the image (SaveThumbnailImage and PrintThumbnailImage), but they are never actually called in the script. Any attempts to call those with OutParams.ImageData error with a type mismatch.

Particularly, if you copy and paste the example, the mismatch error is on line 80 with the "stream.WriteText text".

Are the [] brackets shown in the above link required when passing the data to the sub? As in: SaveThumbnailImage(objOutParams.ImageData[])

I have seen the PowerShell examples, and I can get the PowerShell example to work, but being an HTA, I need this to work with VBScript. Has anybody successfully gotten a VBScript to output a thumbnail image? Any tips on getting this to work?

Thank you in advace!

Eric

EDIT: Tried adding the brackets [], but it throws an error "Expected ')'". Doesn't seem to like the brackets.

What exactly is being created with the ADODB.stream? Is that the issue? This one is new to me. I have .NET 3.5 and .NET 4.5 installed.

Hi, all

I have a problem in the management of the machines in Hyper-V, when I try to open the VM console I get the following error:

an error occurred while attempting to launch the Virtual Machine
Connection application for the selected virtualmachine

however when I click on the settings I get this other:

Cannot access the settings for the selected virtual machine. the
computer "localhost" failed to perform the requested operation

I tried to add my user account in InitialStore.xml with AzMan,

with icacls “<virtualmachinefolder>” /grant “NT VIRTUAL MACHINE\<virtualmachineguid>”:F /T

but did not solve my problem.

Any idea?

tnx for now

I have a server with windows 2008R2 and that server is having a GPT parition (UEFI). i want to convert this server to virtual.

I am using DisktoVHD utility. But my Vm could able to boot from that converted vhd.

Is there any way to P2V for this scenario.

Thanks

Hyper V 2012 Failover Cluster Physical Switch Failure

So I have a 3 node cluster of Hyper V 2012 Servers.

They are connected to a stack of switches.  All physical network connections are run through this stack.

I need to take the switch stack down for a few minutes to update the firmware. The switches will be 100% down.

Will the Virtual machines be ok, other then being inaccessible during the firmware update?

Or will I have to shut down the failover cluster, update the switches, then bring the cluster back up?  I'd like to avoid that if possible...

Hyper-V Replication - Intitial Replication Option Using Existing Virtual Machine

Hi Members,

I want to enable Hyper-V Replication from Hyper-V Cluster (Primary Site) to Hyper-V Standalone (DR Site) all required settings successfully configured like Hyper-V Replica Broker ,AD Object and others.

I Tested Replication works fine When I Start With “INITIAL REPLICATION” method using Network.

I have very limited bandwidth between Primary Site and DR Site and VM which I want to replicate are very large (for initial Replication Method)

So I want to use third method of replication “Use Existing ….”

For this I copy whole folder named as Windows 8.1 which contains VM configuration Files,VHD’s

When I start replication wizard it automatically creates folder named as “HYPER-V Replica”

Under this folder I Pasted My VHD on Virtual Disk Folder and same for Virtual Machine folder.

But Still Got Error Screen Shot Attached

I Also Tried From Replica Server (To Import But it was unable to locate required folder)

Screen Shots Attached.

Slow backup performance when the owner of the VM and CSV are not in the same host

3 hosts in the Hyper-V 2012 cluster and few CSV volumes.

The slow backup performance (around 1xxx MB/min in backup exec) will occure when it meets the following scenario :

1. VM on Node 1 and CSV 1

2. CSV 1 owner is Node 2

When i change the owner of CSV 1 to Node 1, the backup performance will return to normal (over 6000MB/min in Backup exec).

Disk Configuration Question for Performance

$

Hi,

I am looking for some advice on what the best way to configure my disk system is for performance when using Hyper-V. Currently I have two midline 7.2k SATA disks used for the hyper-V OS in RAID 1, and then 14 x 10k 600GB SAS enterprise disks in RAID 10. The RAID 10 is where all my VM’s exist on, but not directly on the physical disk, I use a product called StarWind which consumes almost all of the physical disk space, this is a virtual SAN and I use this for my CSV in the cluster, the VM’s all exist on this starwind disk, there is a tiny amount of overhead but I don’t think that’s really where my problem lies. We have 12 Virtual machines, so there is 1 spindle per VM, however it’s in RAID 10 so does this actually mean I have 7 spindles for 12 VMs?

The entire system almost grinds to a halt whenever I am copying new VM’s onto this host. I can’t use any other RAID type except for RAID 1 or 10. I know RAID 0 would give me better performance but we are not willing to take the risk. Now, it is my understanding that RAID 1 and 10 are essentially the same with the same performance and capacity, because of this I chose RAID 10 so I can take advantage of the combined capacity, but I am wondering if this is the best configuration.

I can think of a few other variations:

  • A single RAID 10 with one large partition but multiple CSV’s instead of one large one
  • A single RAID 10 with multiple partitions and a CSV on each partition
  • Multiple RAID 1, each having a single partition and a single CSV

Reading this site, there are a few pointers I have taken away regarding disk performance, a couple below I have questions about.

http://www.altaro.com/hyper-v/23-best-practices-improve-hyper-v-vm-performance/

Point 6 says “Use separate volumes for each VM. Since the administrative tasks of a virtual machine are controlled by its own process (VMWP.exe), keeping several virtual machines on a single volume will cause more Disk I/O operations from each worker process. Hence, it is recommended to use separate volumes for storing virtual machine files (VHD, VHDx, checkpoints, and XML).

Does this mean the arrangement I propose in my second point above – multiple partitions and a CSV on each partition? The term “Volume” seems to be a bit ambiguous depending on where you read

I believe point 14 to be incorrect though. “De-fragment Hyper-V Server regularly or before creating a virtual hard disk. It is advisable to defrag Hyper-V Server disks where the VHD and virtual machine configuration files are stored regularly or before creating a large virtual hard disk file.

It is my understanding that defrag only tends to work well if there are many files on the disk, on the physical disk in my case there is one massive starwind file so I don’t think defrag on the physical will do anything, defrag in the starwind disk might help but it is mostly large VHDX files – will defrag really make much difference?

Additionally, I don’t have any generation 2 VM’s and there’s nothing I can do about this right now, all data disks use SCSI channels on the VMs, all VHDX are fixed size.

Also, a slight side question but kind of related – I have both an exchange server and SQL server running as VM’s (the log files already exist on separate VHDs, but on the same physical RAID 10 disk), does my physical disks used for log files need to match those used for the DB, or can they be slower lower class disks… for example, if I place a 7.2K disk in with a RAID made up of 10K disks, it is my understanding that the entire RAID will lower its performance of the slowest member – is this true with log files and databases, if the log files are on slow disks will the database also go slower to match the pace of log files being written?

many thanks

Steve
