Hyper-V entries in .NFO dump System Summary Windows 2012

$

Hi,

Can someone explain to me what are these entries that are displayed in a .NFO (msinfo32.exe) on a Windows 2012 (also seen in R2), even though I do NOT have the Hyper-V Role enabled:

Hyper-V - VM Monitor Mode Extensions              Yes
Hyper-V - Second Level Address Translation Extensions Yes
Hyper-V - Virtualization Enabled in Firmware      Yes
Hyper-V - Data Execution Protection       Yes

There seems to be no way of disabling it and there is no information on the help and haven't been able to find much on this or other related web searches.

So, if we have not enabled the Hyper-V role, why are these "extensions" enabled? What do they mean?

Reason I ask is because we have PCIe HW that is not capable of running on (most) virtualization environments and we suspect these might be causing some erratic behavior we have experienced on and off.

Thanks!

Virtualisation of workstations

Hi, not sure if this is a right forum, but anyway...

A small organisation is buying a server from OEM (say, called SERVER1) and can request to add some software licenses, but doesn't know which ones. The aim is to make it possible for 5-10 users of this organisation to have their own virtual workstations based on Windows 7 Professional, and all virtual machines running on that server -- SERVER1. Each of 5-10 users needs to have their own workstation (1 to 1), with their own OSE, windows updates, set of applications, etc whatever is needed. The users plan to access their own assigned workstation by RDP from the same organisation's OEM PCs, but some from thin clients.

What Microsoft licenses need to be purchased?

Hyper-V Replica Supported Workloads

Dears,

I have been search for a while for supported Microsoft Workload with Hyper-V Replica, and it seems non of Microsoft teams are supporting it (System center is not supported, Exchange is not supported, SQL for many applications is not supported).

I decided to ask you are as Hyper-V team, what is the supported Workload with Hyper-V Replica?

What have you tested with it?

Please provide me with link.

Thanks

I have implementing 3 node cluster using Windows server 2012 r2 hyper-v environment, Scenario as below....

3 HP server, every server 4 NIC`s, i made team using 4 NIC`s, and Cisco switch port configured as ether-channel and trunk port.

cluster up and running across all node, suddenly i have faced that i can`t access VM when its not on the same node from where i am accessing Cluster manager. but i can access that VM only if i log on that owned node via cluster manager.\

Please help.

Storage Server

Hi,

Im looking to upgrade my Hyper V lab to support clustering and shared storage. Currently I have 2 Hosts  each with 2 SSD drives (one for OS and one for VMs)

I was looking at this:

http://www.ebuyer.com/517760-hp-proliant-gen8-g1610t-microserver-712317-421

If I was to take the VM SSDs out of the hosts and add them to this (Id look at buying a small OS SSD too), would the performance be any good over ISCSI? I would have GB connectivity between the hosts and the storage server.

All Server 2012 R2 BTW.

Any advice would be appreciated.

UCS and Hyper-V 2012 R2

We are running UCS platform with Nimble storage. Running in a 10 blade node host Hyper-V 2012 R2 failover cluster.  Our issue is that randomly one of the VM running in the cluster stops resolving a ping (either by name or IP address).  But, I can connect to the VM and ping out. In order to resolve being able to ping the VM is to restart it. I have looked in the event viewer and nothing points to the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster: possible config issue

$

Hi,

I've built a test cluster in my lab. The kit consists of:

2 Hosts (5 X 1GB nics each).

1 X 16 port switch

1 server with 2012R2 (has the iSCSI target installed.

1 VM on another host which acts as a DC/ DNS for the cluster.

on each host server, nic allocation is as follows:

nic1 (USB): Management network (host 1:192.168.2.40, Host2: 192.168.2.41)

nic2&3 (team): VM Access Network (no ip as it's just a virtual switch)

nic4: iSCSI1 (Host1: 192.168.50.10, Host2: 192.168.51.10)

nic5: iSCSI2 (Host1: 192.168.50.20, Host2: 192.168.51.20)

MPIO is installed and configured.

On the iSCSI target, I have 1 nic for the network and 2 nics for iSCSI (192.168.51.30, 192.168.50.30).

All three servers run Windows Server 2012R2 Enterprise and the two hosts have failover clustering and the hyper-v role installed. All the iSCSI traffic is VLAN'd on the same switch (VLAN50).

There is a Quorum disk on the iSCSI target and a CSV for Virtual Hard Disks. The Quorum disk shows on the owner as Drive Q. The CSV drives can only be seen in disk management or server manager>disks. on both hosts

To test I've created 2 HA VMs and live migrated VM's them between both hosts and that works fine.

I've powered down each host and the VMs come up on the other host(For example, VMs are on Host1 and I power it down. If I log onto host 2, they will then power up).

I've tested the teaming by removing 1 nic cable at a time and that's fine as well. I've tested MPIO/ iSCSI by removing 1 cable at a time and everything is ok.

The issue is as follows:

Scenario1: Disk Quorum Owner is Host 2, I have a running VM on host 1. If I unplug the cables from both iSCSI nics on host 1, Host2 goes offline (I can't ping or connect to it, VMs on Host 1 go off, VMs on Host 2 go off, failover clustering manager on host one cannot find the cluster). If I reboot Host 2, everything works fine. The VMs startup on Host1. Not sure why host2 goes offline. Can anyone please advise?

Scenario2: Disk Quorum Owner is Host 2 owner of data CSVs is Disk 2, I have a running VM on host 2. If I unplug the cables from both iSCSI nics on Host 2, Host2 does not go offline. Instad all CSVs and Quorum move to Host1 ( VMs on Host 1 run as normal, VMs on Host 2 run as normal, failover clustering manager on both hosts work as normal and the csvs are shown as mounted on host2). How is this possible/ is this expected behavior?

Thanks very much,

Regards,

HA

Hyper V Error - Microsoft Emulated IDE Controller

Hi

in a new server (W2008 R2) - HP Proliant ML 350 G5 I can't start any virtual machines. When I try to start one virtual machine I see an error about Microsoft Emulated IDE Controller if virtual machine has an vhd attached, but is the virtual machine hasn't vhd the error is different: Microsoft Synthetic SCSI Controller Insufficient Memory.

I've reinstalled HyperV role, but I'm in the same state

Any ideas?

Thanks

startup without programs

Windows 2012 r2 Hyper-V Dell R710 starts up in safe mode fine but with normal startup it comes to logon and after authenticating powers down. I suspect some UPS software installed on the host machine just before this started is the fault. I have a Windows 2012 R2 Essentials server and one Windows 8.1 Pro running perfectly as guests and I do have a full Altaro backup of the guests.

Is there a way I can come up as command prompt and then see what programs are on the host and delete them? I can get to Command prompt only but don't know how to get to programs to remove. Thanks

I am experiencing an issue when I removed the Wireless device and then re-installed it on Hyper-V Windows 8.

The error states : "Failed while modifying virtual Ethernet Switch connection settings" followed by "Ethernet port {f...} bind failed unspecified error (0x80004005)"

Is anyone else experiencing this kind of issue?

Hi All,

Had some issues with virtual switch, it never worked. Tried to enable/disable hyper-v.

Pretty much does not install anymore. Maybe some of you have an idea.

Here output from CBS.log based on it seems the virtual switch part is failing, but no idea why exactly:

Guide to remote manage Hyper-V servers and VM's in workgroups or standalone

$
0
0

This guide is based on the following 3 products:
Windows server 2012 (core)
Windows 8
Hyper-V server v3 / Hyper-V server 2012

The following guide will enable you to:

1: remotely manage your Hyper-V Virtual Machines with Hyper-V manager
2: remotely manage your Hyper-V servers' firewall with a MMC snap-in.
3: remotely manage your Hyper-V server (2012) with server manager

! This should also work for Core installations of server 2012, but I haven't tried.

This guide is purely focussed on servers in a WORKGROUP, or as a stand alone.
I CAN NOT tell you what you need to do to get it working in a domain.

* You can run these commands straight from the console (Physically at the machine) or through RDP.
* You will need to be logged on as an administrator.
* Commands are listed in somewhat random order; I do however advise to follow the steps as listed.
* Commands with ? in front of them are only ment to be helpfull for troubleshooting,
* and to identify settings and changes made.
* Commands and instructions with ! in front of them are mandatory.

- server: means the server core or hyper-v server (non gui)
- client: means the machine you want to use for remote administration.
- Some commands are spread over 2 lines; be sure to copy the full syntax.

> To enable the Hyper-V manager to connect to your server, you need to perform the following 2 actions: (Assuming you have already installed the feature)

1:
! Client: Locate the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts file.
! right-click --> properties --> security
! click --> edit --> add --> YOURUSERNAME or Administrator --> OK
! then select this new user, and tick the "modify"-box under the "allow"-section.
! apply the change, and close.
! doubleclick the file, and open with notepad
! add the ip-address and name of your server (no // or other crap needed)
! Save the file
# I recommend putting a shortcut to this file on the desktop.
# If you change the ip-address of your server (e.g. move the server from staging to a live environment)
# you might forget to do so in the hosts file.
# Hyper-V manager, MMC, RSAT, and Server-manager all rely on the hosts-file to resolve the name.
# some of these might connect to their respective service on an i.p.-level, but some don't.
# This is the main reason you need to modify this file.

! USE AN ELEVATED CMD/POWERSHELL PROMPT TO CONTINUE !
# the next config needs to be done on windows 8.
# It seems that it's already preconfigured under server 2012

2:
! Client: dcomcnfg
! open component services --> computers
! right-click -> my computer -> properties
! select "COM SECURITY" tab
! under "ACCESS PERMISSIONS" select "edit limits"
! select "ANONYMOUS LOGON", and tick "remote access" under ALLOW
# Without this adjustment, you can't connect to your Hyper-V server
# with the Hyper-V manager if you're not in a domain.

> And if you haven't done so already... make sure you have enabled remote management number 4 on the Hyper-V server console.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

> Next, is to get the MMC firewall snap-in working.
The reason for this, is to have a GUI available to configure it.
If you're happy without it, you may skip this and use a shell instead to do so.

? server: netsh advfirewall show currentprofile
# shows the current profile (public/domain/private) and its settings
# depending on your needs, you should set the right profile to fit your needs.
# You can easily do this when the MMC snap-in is done. (after you've followed these steps)

! server: netsh advfirewall set currentprofile settings remotemanagement enable
# enables remote management of the firewall on an application level
# (In other words: allows the firewall to be remotely managed)

! server: netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Windows Firewall Remote Management" new enable=yes
# allows remote management of the firewall, through the required firewall ports with TCP protocol.
# 4 rules will be updated to allow access: public & Domain, dynamic and endpoint-mapper.
# You can disable/add/change the rule from the MMC snap-in after finishing this guide.
# e.g. set the firewall through the MMC-GUI to only allow specific ip-addresses etc.

? server: netsh advfirewall firewall show rule all
# Shows a list of available rules, and their current state.
# when run from cmd, the list exceeds the maximum length for review.
# (from cmd, type:) start powershell, and run the command from there.

! Client: cmdkey /add:YOURSERVERNAME /user:USERNAMEONTHESERVER /pass:THEPASSWORDOFTHATUSER
# I recommend you to use a username with enough privileges for management
# All capital letters need to be replaced with your input
# CMD answers "credential added successfully" when you're done

! Client: locate MMC, and run it as an admin.
# In windows 8/2012, go to search and type MMC. Right-click the icon,
# and choose run as admin on the bar below.

! Client: application MMC: select "file" --> Add/remove snap-in
! --> (left pane) scroll down to "windows firewall" --> select and click "add"
! select "another computer"
! type the name of the server you want to manage (NO workgroup/ or //, just same name as you typed for cmdkey)

* Part 2 is done.
# Have a look by doubleclicking the firewall icon in the left pane.
# It looks and works the same as the GUI version that you are familiar with.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

! Next is the Server Manager.
# Follow the steps listed to get your server listed and manageable in the server manager.

! Client: Open the created Firewall snap-in for your server.
! Find the 3 "Remote Event Log Management" entries in the list of INBOUND rules, and enable them.

! Open powershell --> in cmd windows, type: start powershell
! run the following line in powershell
! Client: in C:\Windows\system32> set-item WSMAN:\localhost\client\trustedhosts -value YOURSERVERNAME -concatenate

# WinRM Security Configuration.
# This command modifies the TrustedHosts list for the WinRM client. The computers in the TrustedHosts list might not be
# authenticated. The client might send credential information to these computers. Are you sure that you want to modify
# this list?
# [Y] Yes  [N] No  [S] Suspend  [?] Help (default is "Y"): y
#
# I recommend to choose yes; unless you like to pull some more hairs...

! server: winrm qc
# WinRM service is already running on this machine.
# WinRM is not set up to allow remote access to this machine for management.
# The following changes must be made:
# Configure LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy to grant administrative rights remotely
# to local users.
# Make the changes? y / n
!  select yes

! Client: open the server 2012 server manager
! click manage -> add server
! select the DNS tab, and type the name of your server

Done.

You can now manage your remote server through the familiar computer management GUI.

! Right-click your remote server, and select "Computer Management"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

A few side notes:

? The Performance tab seems to list the local machine's performance, in stead of the remote servers'
? If you want Windows server backup, you need to right-click the server in the server manager, and select "add roles and features.
? it will then become available under the "computer management" of the remote server.

If you liked this guide you may thank my employer, Mr. Chris W.
for giving me the time to work it all out.

Cheers!

Connectivity issues when using nic teaming

$

Hello!

There're three host computers in my test lab - Host1, Host2 and Host3.

Host3 has three physical nics, two of them are used for Hyper-V - there's a virtual machine namedFW with the nic = 10.10.0.101 (connected to the production network) and nic2 =20.1.1.1 - this nic2 is a default gateway for the test network 20.1.1.0/24 (consisting of several virtual machines hosted on Host1/Host2/Host3).

Host1 has three physical nics, the two of them are members of the team (VM-TEAM):

Virtual machine DC (hosted on Host1) uses the VM-TEAM as its network adapter with the ip = 20.1.1.2

Vm FW and vm DC are connected to the same 5-port 1Gb switch:FW is connected by the single utp5 cable, DC - by the two cables.

The problem: when coping any data from DC to FW (or vice versa) copy process stops after several seconds, then after ~10-60 seconds proceeds, then stops again and etc...

This problem has never arisen when I was using a SINGLE nic for the Hyper-V, NOT teamed adapters.

Are there any settings/known issues for the nic teaming that could lead to such problem?

Thank you in advance,

Michael

Connecting Hyper-V 2012 r2 via FC/FC switch to VNX5300

Hello guys,

We have 4 servers with win2012 R2 with each of which connected to the FC switch via two FC HBA and a VNX5300 connected via FC HBA to the same switch.

The servers are connected to the management network via a gigabit NIC.

After I've installed the Navishpere Host Agent on all the servers, I got to see the servers connected in the Uniphere interface, with the initiators, hostnames,  and host IP addresses (the management IP address).

As I haven't use and worked with FC HBAs until now, i don't know if everything is ok with the initiators. I see 4 initiators for each server altough I have MPIO enabled for iSCSI and SAS.

Should i have anything else enabled in MPIO?

Thank you very much.

Best regards,

Gabriel

CSV vhdx files and SAN optimization - sequential or random access or...?

$

Is there a best practice on the SAN optimization of LUNs for CSV VHDX files - e.g. sequential vs. random access?

We recently set up a small two-node Hyper-V 2012 R2 Failover Cluster. As I was creating LUNs for the CSV vhdx files, our SAN (like most, I think) has some pre-set optimization options which are more or less sequential vs. random access. There's now the abstraction layer of shared VHDX files and the actual data those VHDXs are being used to store.  Are there any best-practices for SAN optimization in this regard?

In other words, I could see:

A. Cluster-shared VHDXs are accessed (more-or-less) based on the type of data they're used for

B. All cluster-shared VHDXs are (more-or-less) accessed sequentially

C. All cluster-shared VHDXs are (more-or-less) accessed randomly.

I have one source that says that for a relatively simple SMB setup like we have that "C" is the recommendation.  I'm curious if anyone else has run into this or seen an official best-practice...?

LBFO team and VMQ configuration

Hi gang,

So I am running Server 2012 R2 in a two node cluster with some teamed network cards (2 - dual 10 gig cards)

The teaming is switch independent and dynamic.

In the event viewer I am seeing the following error:

Event ID: 106

Available processor sets of the underlying physical NICs belonging to the LBFO team NIC /DEVICE/{2C85A178-B9EA-436B-8E53-FAE34A578E95} (Friendly Name: Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver) on switch 9740F036-858E-49C8-8A29-DAE5BDA94871 (Friendly Name: VLANs) are not configured correctly. Reason: The processor sets overlap when LBFO is configured with sum-queue mode.

So I read a bunch on the VMQ stuff and just want to make sure this is the proper configuration:

Set-netadaptervmq –name “NIC A” –baseprocessornumber 2 –maxprocessors 8

Set-netadaptervmq –name “NIC B” –baseprocessornumber 10 –maxprocessors 8

Set-netadaptervmq –name “NIC C” –baseprocessornumber 18 –maxprocessors 8

Set-netadaptervmq –name “NIC D” –baseprocessornumber 24 –maxprocessors 6

Hyper threading is enabled:

------------- -------------------------

           8                       16

           8                       16

The last line of the vmq configuration is my greatest confusion.

Thanks.

USB Pass-Through From Windows 8.1 Host To Windows Server 2012 R2 VM

I want to be able to connect with a Windows Mobile Device through Windows Mobile Device Center, within a Virtual Machine.  When connecting through the Hyper-V Manager and through Remote Desktop, under "Other supported RemoteFX USB devices", I can see the Symbol USB Sync Cradle.  In the VM, in Device Manager, I don't see a USB connection.  In the VM, I don't see any meaningful errors in the Event Viewer.

Host:  Windows 8.1 Enterprise Hyper-V on a Domain.  Upgraded from Windows 8.1 Pro.  When this computer was originally installed with Windows 8 Pro, Hyper-V was enabled.  I removed Hyper-V, and installed VMWare Player, because I wanted USB Pass-through.  I then uninstalled VMWare and installed VirtualBox.  Recently, I uninstalled VirtualBox, upgraded to Windows 8.1 Enterprise, and enabled Hyper-V.

Virtual Machine OS: Windows Server 2012 R2 on a Workgroup.  Started out with being a VMWare VM, using VMWare Player.  Moved to VirtualBox.  USB Pass-through was working in both those virtual environments.  Used Disk2VHD to convert the VM to a VHDX file.

On the Host:

  1. Windows Mobile Device Center is connected to a Motorola Windows Mobile Device (MC959X) sitting in a Symbol USB Cradle.  The OS on the scanner is Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 Classic CE OS 5.2.29217 (Build 29217.5.3.12.26).  Advanced Networking (USB to PC) is not enabled.
  2. Enabled RemoteFX.
  3. In the RDP file, and in the Registry, added the GUID's for:
  • WPD "{eec5ad98-8080-425f-922a-dabf3de3f69a}";
  • Windows Mobile "{6AC27878-A6FA-4155-BA85-F98F491D4F33}";
  • USB Device "{88BAE032-5A81-49f0-BC3D-A4FF138216D6}";
  • Windows CE USB Device "{25dbce51-6c8f-4a72-8a6d-b54c2b4fc835}";
  • GUID_DEVINTERFACE_USB_DEVICE "{A5DCBF10-6530-11D2-901F-00C04FB951ED}"

Ran "sfc /scannow"

All Microsoft Updates are current.

What am I missing?

Has anyone ever done a V2V  conversion of Marathon Virtual Server to a Hyper-V vm? Either HA or FT? If so, how was this done?

Thanks
