Hyper-V: Determine Total Capacity of Dynamic VHDs
HYPer-v 2012 R2 NIC team breadown after Broadcom Driver upgradation
Hi Team ,
I am using Blade server with Two Broadcom BCM57800 NetXtream 10 G ports . Both Network card configured in one team with Switch independent and Hyper-v Port configuration using Windows Native teaming.
I upgraded the firmware driver of network card to the latest level and then after Hyper-v Team stop responding.
i am using Single virtual Switch with one vNIC so hyper-v can talk to mgmt LAN on Vlan X.
as an work around i break the team and configure one nic for Mgmt IP and other for VDItraffic (Virtual Switch)
please let me know if any one face similar issue and able to resolved it.
Thanks

Hypervisor disables Sleep and Hibernate on Windows Server 2012R2! Why? How to solve?
Hi,
according to the official documentation of Microsoft, Hyper-V does not block Sleep and Hibernate on Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2.
From powercfg I get the following output:
The following sleep states are not available on this system: Standby (S1) The system firmware does not support this standby state. An internal system component has disabled this standby state. Hypervisor Standby (S2) The system firmware does not support this standby state. An internal system component has disabled this standby state. Hypervisor Standby (S3) An internal system component has disabled this standby state. Hypervisor Hibernate An internal system component has disabled hibernation. Hypervisor Standby (Connected) The hypervisor does not support this standby state. The system firmware does not support this standby state. Hybrid Sleep Standby (S3) is not available. Hibernation is not available. The hypervisor does not support this standby state. Fast Startup Hibernation is not available.
I already installed a graphics device driver to prevent the graphics device from blocking Sleep and Hyper-V. So this should not be an issue.
What can I do to enable Sleep and Hibernate?

Daniel

Sharing network with VM causes problem
Hi,
The setup is that I have host server running Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard with all updates installed and running Hyper-V. Hyper-V has 1 guest OS running also Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard. I have shared internet from host server with Internet Connection Sharing as shown below.
The guest OS has working network connectivity. I have tested it with pinging 8.8.8.8.
The problem starts when I try to access Windows update on guest OS. The main server running Hyper-V network goes down and I get disconnect notice from RDP and after a while networking is resumed with RDP. I can reproduce this problem everytime I try to use Windows update on guest OS.
In Event Viewer I can see that there are same messages shown everytime this happens. Here are the messages:
The description for Event ID 27 from source e1iexpress cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. Name resolution for the name ipv6.msftncsi.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.
I have already disabled IPv6 support from all NICs on host server and guest OS. Also host servers NIC driver should be up-to-date.
When googling around I can find similiar problems but I can't find solution. If someone could help me it would be great!
Thank you
How can I enable trunk mode in the vswitch without using SCVMM?
SCVMM 2012 SP1 Virtual Switch on Cluster Node Disappears
I have been running into an interesting but an alarming issue with virtual switches. I have recently built a 4 node Server 2012 Hyper-V failover cluster. I have built numerous 2008R2 and 2012 Hyper-V clusters before, so I am pretty familiar with the process. I have rebuilt my VMM due to software problems, and on this new cluster, I have configured the virtual switches with nic teaming on 2 of the virtual switches.
I have 4 clusters being managed by this VMM.. and this newly built cluster keeps losing all of the VMM virtual switch configurations, meaning if I go to properties on the problem host and click on virtual switches, its blank. Refresh host cluster flags all virtual machines in this cluster as "Unsupported Configuration," making the vm unmanageable via VMM.
Information (26844)Virtual switch (Virtual Switch Name) is not highly available because the switch is not available in host (One of the Hyper-V Hosts).
Recommended Action
All virtual servers on that host still has connectivity, as all virtual switch configs are normal when looking at it with Hyper-V Manager or Failover Cluster Manager..
The workaround is to evacuate the host using Failover Cluster Manager and reboot the host. Then refresh the host. Then refresh the VM's. I cannot consider this a 'workaround' as I cannot be rebooting my hyper-V hosts every week.. and migrating virtual servers constantly just for this reason. (DPM backups have a FIT with csv's if it tries to backup a vm on a same csv as another vm thats being migrated.)
I have been wrestling with this problem for a few weeks now. The cluster has been slicked and completely rebuilt.. Still same problems. Has ANYONE else out there seen this issue? Does ANYONE out there suggest a way to go about further troubleshooting this issue?
Hyper-V Role installation fails without reason (Windows Server 2012)
Hi,
We are building a new Hyper-V infratructure, based on Windows Server 2012 Datacanter and multiple HP ML350p Gen8 servers. We've been deploying lost of Server 2012 Hyper-V projects lately (all HP G6 servers), without any problems at all, but this project is a real pain:
We are unable to install the Hyper-V role on any server, at all! There's four of them! All hosts are HP ML350p Gen8, Server 2012 Datacenter, latest updates/firmware/drivers (HP SPP 2012.10.0). BIOS settings are correct/verified for virtualization.
We simply install Hyper-V via Server Manager without any modifications (not selecting any network adapters either, this is all done later using Virtual Network ).
The installation reboots the server, and during boot, the installation fails. After reboot, the Server Manager sais there's been an unexpected error, and have a nice day.
I've been digging through the CBS.log file, and there a very small ERROR portion during installation:

can we map our physical system’s wireless NIC into virtual machines
hi friends
can we map our physical system’s wireless NIC into virtual machines in hyper-v 2008 R2 and/or hyper-v 2012 R2 ?
in my system i have a real wireless NIC. Now can i create a wireless NIC inside VMs? (Because if we want to test wireless sniffers applications inside vm, they need a wireless NIC inside the VM to sniff packets).
thanks in advance
Hyper-V - Sites and Services using multiple subnets
Good evening,
Im currently setting up a test domain where I want to use multiple subnets.
My current setup is the following
- Host PC running Hyper-V manager with 1 physical NIC that connects to my router (192.168.0.1)
- Virtual Machine running Windows Server 2012 R2 - This is my domain controller aswell as DNS and DHCP server. IP address for this is 192.168.0.200
Now what im wanting to do is also create 2 more domain controllers but 'pretent' that they are in two completely different locations running off multiple subnets. Lets say one is in America and one is in Australia.
I want the addresses of these two machines the following
DC (America) - 192.168.1.1
DC (Australia) - 192.168.2.1
The reason i'll be doing this is im going to be working with Sites and Services to give me a better understanding of it.
Please can someone give me help with how I can achieve this.
Thanks.

why Data Execution Prevention feature is required for virtualization
hi frinds
as i studies, Data execution prevention (DEP) is a security feature to block viruses.
i don't understand what the relationship between this feature & virtualization.
what it is a prerequisit for hyper-v virtualization?
any help or usefull link to read about this relation?
thanks in advance
Moving VMs
Hello,
I have 2 Physical Servers in my Production Environment, Server 1 and Server 2 are Windows 2008R2 installed and Both servers config hyper v role. In Hyper V
Server 1 - Sec AD Server, ERP Server, Lync Server, Exchange Server and another ERP Server.
Server 2 - Primary AD(PDC), File Server, Kaspersky Server, System Log Server, Help Desk Server, Call Capturing SMDR Server.
My question is, i wants to format Server 1 (Physical Server) and re-install Windows Server 2008R2, Before that i wants to move all the Hyper-V Machines to Server 2 (Physical Server) without losing data. What are the best solution for my requirement?

TWO Nics configuration
Hi,
i am using windows 2008 R2 Hyper V. I have configured two physical nics in my server having different subnets like 10.x.x.x and 192.x.x.x. How to configure these two nics in Hyper V machines.

Poor performance on VMs
Hi
I have a Hyper-V 2012 R2 server with 192gb RAM running @ 1800mhz, 2 x Xeon E2650 v2, and for VMs, a SATA 7200RPM disk (4tb, no RAID).
I'm running 70 or so VMs, all on, and I'm the only user of the system so no load (of course for things like SQL Server, it still runs timer jobs which access databases, etc). VMs are a mix of SQL Servers, ADFS, AD DS, cert authorities, Sharepoint, System Center, and lots more.
On all VMs, they are very choppy and jerky. Would this be a disk bottleneck? Memory CPU look good. If it is disk, what perf counters can I use to establish this?
I'm looking to get 2 X 4TB SAS disks (also 7200rpm) in RAID 0 or 1. Would this perform much better?
Thanks
problem with adapter network category reverting to public after change to private
I noticed that after setting up HyperV Server 2012 R2, that after applying needed firewall rules to allow remote management, that these were added into the "Public" profile. So, I disabled them and enabled for Private and proceeded to change the NIC which is internal to the LAN to Private as well.
All was good; however, after several hours... the network category reverted to Public on that NIC, which of course will not allow any remote management.
The firewall rules for remote management are only enabled for "Private".
I used: Set-NetConnectionProfile -InterfaceIndex # -NetworkCategory Private
Which works; however, what is causing it to revert to public after a given amount of time...

Live Migration corrupts VHDX file - is it possible to repair?
Hi.
I have a Hyper-V 2012 cluster with 5 nodes. All HP Blade servers in the same enclosure, on 3PAR FC SAN storage. I wanted to run routine maintenance on the hosts, i.e., Windows Update. So I Live Migrated the VMs off one host at a time, paused it in Failover Cluster Manager, rebooted, unpaused, and failed the roles back manually.
After updating the second host, I decided to fail the roles back when unpausing. The instant one of the VMs moved back to this host, it failed to start, and got a red X in FCM.
The VM had 2 virtual disks. I removed one, leaving only the system disk. When I started it, it ran CHKDSK a couple of times and eventually came back, appearing to be healthy (a miracle!). But I cannot add the second VHDX to the VM. It throws an error:
SERVERNAME': Attachment 'C:\ClusterStorage\Volume5\SERVERNAME\SERVERNAME-E.vhdx' failed to open because of error: 'The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.' (7864368). (Virtual machine ID F4F4F4F4-F4F4-F4F4-F4F4-F4F4F4F4F4F4ID and name changed)
I've search everywhere for a solution, followed all the links. There are tools for VHD repair, but I can't find anything for VHDX.
I can't change to VHD format because the Edit Disk wizard throws this same error before it will even read it.
There is nothing wrong with our network or hardware, either. I had just done about 20 Live Migrations before this happened, and they all went just fine.
Anyone have any idea how I can recover this VHDX? Even if you know of a beta product, I'm willing to be a guinea pig!

Virtual server and Firewall
Hi all,
Sorry if this is a too basic question. I'm trying to understand how our system works as I'm not the one that set it up in the first place. The Firewall crashed today and needed rebooted. When connected to the the server it says "Kernel-Power" and ID 41 so to me it sounds like the server shut down unexpectedly but I'm not sure. When the Firewall was rebooted everything was working fine again. So I have several questions that I'm thinking of. How can I figure out what really happened? Did the server shut down or was it just the firewall? Is it possible that the server (or client computers) sent information through the firewall, the firewall's cache got fully loaded and couldn't give a response and because the server didn't get a response it rebooted and the firewall crashed? Sounds unlikely, doesn't it. I maybe should say that when the firewall was down, as I said, I could access the server through RDC but the firewall was completely inaccessible so I had to press the physical power button to restart the Firewall. And the last week the network overall has been going very slow (which I tried to resolve yesterday by rebooting the routers that we have and that seemed to work).
Thankful for any ideas!
