Hi Hyper V Guru,

I have encountered funny issues. Currently, I am trying to attach a blank VHD to my VM (Test1). Below are the details of my VM

HDD: 100GB (Fixed VHD)

RAM: 4GBd

OS: Windows Server 2008 R2

All of files of the VM are stored in D Drive.

I created one blank VHD for my database called "TestDB1) and store the VHD in E Drive. After that, I am trying to attach the VHD by adding HDD in IDE Controller 0 from the VM's setting inside the hyper-v manager.

However, when I tried to boot up, I encountered the blue screen and it will keeps rebooting nonstop. below are the error message. The error will disappear when I remove the added VHD file.

Please help on this.

Thanks so much for your attention.

Live migration Vnic on hosts randomly losing connectivity HELP

Hello Everyone,

I am building out a new 2012 R2 cluster using VMM with converged network configuration.  I have 5 physical nics and teaming 3 of them using dynamic load balancing.  I have configured 3 virtual network adapters in host which are for management, cluster and Live migration.  The live migration nic loses connectivity randomly and fails migrations 50% of the time.

Hardware is IBM blades (HS22) with Broadcom Netextreme II nics.  I have updated firmware and drivers to the latest versions.  I found a forum with something that looks very similar but this was back in November so Im guessing there is a fix.

http://www.hyper-v.nu/archives/mvaneijk/2013/11/vnics-and-vms-loose-connectivity-at-random-on-windows-server-2012-r2/

Really need help with this.

Thanks

currently have a few hyper v vm servers running on one host. My issue is that the physical nics are getting dhcp addresses from my dhcp server, however I have static addresses on my vmhosts all using external connections to the physical nics. Inside the vms they are set to static. should I be setting the actual physical nic on the host to the same static as the running vm? so that the host doesnt pick up dhcp addresses for no reason?

WARNING: Failed to get Network Cost info from NLM, assuming network is NOT metered, error = 0x80240037

I have couple of VMs Server 2012 R2 RTM on Hyper-v Host running the same OS.

All machines including host and VM that is not in domain have an error in Windowsupdate.log:

AU WARNING: Failed to get Network Cost info from NLM, assuming network is NOT metered, error = 0x80240037

FW and UAC are off on all. There are posts on web discussing the same error but most of them connect this to WSUS or Config Manager. And it is clear because we are touching Windowsupdate.log when troubleshooting WSUS. And because WSUS on 2012 is BUGGY this error confuses too.

Finally, as mentioned earlier I deployed NEW server 2012 not from SYSPREP and did not place it to the domain. Updated the machine from MS update. Everything is OK beside the same error about COST :).

So now it is clear it has nothing to do with WSUS or Configuration manager. It indicates to some Network issue. But there is no clear answer. Some suggest just to ignore the error if everything is OK. But I would like to have a clean log. And it is just interesting what could cause the problem. Is it Hyper-V stuff or Server 2012 itself. Anyway I guess I am doing right by posting a question on HV forum since here are people that should know 2012 .

Thanks.

Hi

At first, sorry for my English

I have trouble with our Hyper-v server. There are 2 virtual servers running on it. One Domain controller and one Application server. It working fine, but it stopped working for 3rd time (randomly). No event is written in event viewer . If it happen, I can´t connect via Hyper-v manager or RDP to the virtual machines and the services on virtual servers doesn´t work. It doesn´t write any error message or something while I trying to connect. I tried to restart hyper-v service with no result . It started working when i restarted whole Hyper-v server.

Can you please help me with this one ?

thx

Newbie question: How do a create a Virtual Network for my VM to connect to the Internet using Powershell?

Hi

Im new to Hyper-V and PowerShell.

My challenge is: Im renting a server from So You Start, and i have installed Hyper-V server 2012 R2 on it.

On this server i need two VMs. I've managed to create my VM and install windows on it. I've used freeRDP to connect to the VM.

But here comes the problem

My VM doesnt have internet connection. Ive create a external VMSwitch with ManagementOS true. So far so good, but after that ive tried a lot of different things to try and setup a virtual network so that my VM can get internet.

Do any of you have a simple step by step guide to doing this using powershell?

Hi there,

I am having some issues with the Hyper-V 2012 R2. I have installed Hyper-V role, created a NIC team and then created a virtual switch. Event log show a MAC conflict: A port on the virtual switch has the same MAC as one of the underlying team members on Team Nic Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver

How can i fix this?

Error Exporting

Hi,

I tried exporting a VM using Hyper-V Manager. I get a "Failed to create export directory with 'General access denied error'(0x80070005)"

I am trying to export via a shared drive. I already did the following things as recommended by this forum and other forums but still cannot export.

1. Added my network login full access to the shared folder.

2. Added the hyper-v administrator to full access to the shared folder.

3. added the hyper-v machine account full access to the shared folder.

There must be something that I miss?

Hyper-V services can't be restarted !!

Hello,

First, I am a newbie to Hyper-V.I have hyper-v on windows server 2012 r2 in a lab environment. I am trying to benchmark the performance of VMs with different OSs by measuring the performance of their disks (using fio and IOmeter tools). The performance of a VM with Linux (ubuntu 12.04) was acceptable in the beginning (average of 35 MBPS to write a 4 GB file size with 1 MB block size). But for a VM with windows server 2008 r2, the performance was very poor (average of 4.7 MBPS to write a 4 GB file size with 1 MB block size). I installed the integration services to increase the performance, but nothing happened. So I have checked the the services on the guest itself to find them not running and cann't be restarted !!

I checked the first VM, the one with linux and it gave me the same poor performance of the other one. So I am guessing that the services on the guest were running and suddenly stopped. I have tried to reinstall them from the iso file on the guest but they still stopped.

How do I restart the services ?! and are they going to make any difference in the perfomance of the disks, since I cann't find in their description any thing related to disks ?!

Note: I am using the same disk and same processor for my VMs.

Thanks in advance

Backup Windows Server 2012 VM on Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Saved State?!!!

Hi,

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 failover Cluster and I installed a new VM running Windows Server 2012. When I configured the backup to this VM using DPM 2012, the backup is offline (Saved State).

I've checked with diskshadow and the Hyper-V vss writer, always gives me the same thing, backup to this VM will be using saved state.

Why can't I run an online backup, using snapshot? Is'it a problem with Hyper-V R2 and Windows 2012 Child VM?

Note: I already checked all the conditions why the backup of a VM could be running on saved state and none of them are applicable to my scenario.

Carlos.

0x00002EFE Occasionally on existing extended replication

I have a problem I cant find an answer to elsewhere. First my environment. I have 2 primary hypervisors replicating data via http over port 80 to another hypervisor. This is all at the same site with physical connections directly to the device. This machine is in turn replicating data via extended replication to a separate machine off-site, connected via direct linked fiber. Replication on-site works fine, and extended replication to the off-site machine works fine as well about 99% of the time. Over the weekend I took a look in the event logs of the machine sending data to the separate machine off-site, and to my surprise there were 2 0x00002EFE events in the logs for 2 separate VM's at the same time. Now it looks like it was a temporary thing, as no further errors occurred, and viewing the replication health of the machines shows all subsequent replication was successful. I looked back a little further and I noticed a different machine about a week ago had the same issue, and again it resumed replicating shortly after the error. Doing some google-fu on the error turns up lots of folks having the problem when first setting replication up, but I cant find anyone having the error once replication has been setup successfully, let alone on an http channel instead of https. The only thing I can think of that may be an issue, is that I have my replication traffic throttled down to 15MB via a PowerShell new-netqospolicy, But during the time of the errors virtually no data was changed, so I have my doubts about it being a traffic related error, especially when I can review the logs at times where I know there was very heavy traffic and I don't see this error repeated. Anyone have any ideas?

Hyper-V causing intermittent network issues on Host?

$

I have a strange issue, I am not entirely sure Hyper-V is causing it, but it certainly seems that way.

Scenario

Host: Windows 8.1
Network Adapter: Intel Dual Band AC-7260 (Wifi)

Network Adapters (relevant ones are highlighted yellow)

Issue

When I continuously ping my wifi router (on the host machine), it intermittently drops.  See the screen shot below.

This issue also manifests itself within the Virtual Machines as the machine constantly getting a DHCP IP address and then losing it.  This happens continuously every few minutes.

Currently, I can resolve the issues by disabling Wifi on the host and then re-enabling it.  I sometimes have to do that 2/3 times for it to stop dropping out.  But it does fix the issue.

What have I tried?

I have been in contact with Dell (laptop is an XPS 15 2013) and Intel support.  They have replaced the motherboard and now they want to replace the WiFi card.  Personally I don't think it will help.

Why do I think it is HyperV related?

If I run the host machine with the VMs powered down, I do not get any issues.  However, as soon as I start any Hyper-V VMs, the issue will usually start pretty quickly.

What it isn't.

This is not related to wifi signal or anything like that.

  • The wifi router is 2 meters from my laptop.
  • Other devices in the house do not exhibit this behaviour
  • The behaviour is consistent across all networks (office, home, coffee shop etc)

Thanks for any help.

Cluster Validation - Validate Network Communication failure HELP

Hi,

I have a eight node cluster which is all up running and working a treat but when I run the Cluster Validation I receive this warning for each host. I have also included the top few lines of the tests. This warning is repeated from each node to every other node in the cluster.

Warning:

Each node has:

iSCSI1 VLAN101 is a 1x 10Gb port and iSCSI2 VLAN 116 is a 1x 10Gb port configured with MPIO

Trunk1 (4x 1Gb NIC) (Address Hash, LACP) on which sits a team with vEthernet (Management) VLAN 101 and vEthernet (Cluster) VLAN 104

Trunk10 (2x 10Gb NIC) (Hyper-V Port, LACP) on which sits a second team with VM traffic and vEthernet (Migration) VLAN 105

Trunk1 and Trunk10 are configured with LACP and locked down to the relevant VLANs on the switch as well as on the vNICs. (Don't know if its best practise to leave the trunk open to all VLANs if the NICs are configured in Hyper-V with VLANs or have both set like they currently are)

iSCSI1 is on VLAN 101 and ip range of 10.100.1.x

iSCSI2 is on VLAN 116 and ip range of 10.100.2.x

vEthernet (Management) is on VLAN 100 and on ip range 172.21.59.12

vEthernet (Cluster) and vEthernet (Migration) are also on there own VLANs and ip ranges.

iSCSI1 and iSCSI2 only has ip v4 and ip v6 left enabled and DNS registration and NETBIOS disabled.  They do have Jumbo frames enabled.

Each network can talk over the relevant NIC or vNIC to the other hosts on the same NIC or vNIC which is correct and not across networks which they shouldn't so (Migration) to (Cluster) etc which is also correct.

(Cluster) and (Migration) only allow cluster communications

(Management) accepts cluster and client communications.

iSCSI1 and iSCSI2 are set to NOT allow any cluster traffic.

Binding Order:

1.Management
2.iSCSI1
3.iSCSI2
4.Migration
5.Cluster

Cluster metric is 900 and Migration 1000.

I still receive the warning below and I assume its because some how when testing, there seems to be a tiny conection across VLANs and ip ranges from iSCSI1 or iSCSI2 to the vNIC (Management) which shouldn't be the case. I assume the error is because of the highlighted line of the table???

Can anyone suggest anything, it is driving me mad! Things seem to work properly but I need the test to complete correctly to be able to sign the clients environment off.

I'm surprised that there is (even if a little) any chat between iSCSI and vEthernet Management according to the test even though they are on different physicalNICs, IP range an even VLANs. Also, trying  to establish if the warning is just that a warning or something to be concerned about. Obviously with all networks broken up as they are, there will be multiple paths between each node of which many are locked down so they cant talk.

Concern is that although it all works fine and even the results read right, I have never seen the warning before in any implementation even when broken up by VLANs, IP ranges and virtual or physical NICs.

Accidentally turned my computer into a server while trying to install hyper-v virtual machine

Hi Guys,

I was trying to enable hyper-v for my computer, but as I don't have windows 8 pro it wasn't visible in the windows features dialog. I found hyper v on my uni's dreamspark server, though, so I downloaded and installed that. Now, windows boot manager immediately boots into a hyper-v server rather than normal windows 8.

I just wanted a virtual machine. How can I fix this so that I can use windows 8 again? All I can think of is system recovery/restore. Also, what is the difference between this server version and the vm?

network virtualization and physical LB

Hi,

How do you add a pc in a Hyper-v virtual network (HNV) as a resource in a physical load balancen?

Let's say that i have 10 web servers in a HNV in subnet 192.168.1.0/24, and my load balancer in placed in the physical core network at 10.70.10.1, and i want to create a Load Balance VIP for alle servers in my HNV 192 network.

I use a citrix netscaler, and it does not look like its supports the NVGRE.

I know that there is a "network virtualization gateway", but how does that work? do i need to setup NAT from 192.168.1.x to 10.70.10.x, and then add the 10.70.10.x ip to my LB - it will require a 10.70.10.x ip for every ressource i need in my LB.

HI all.

New install of 2008R2 on HP DL-380 G6.  I have created (several) VM's none of which will start.  If I remove the IDE Hard Disk and add a DVD of the OS ISO, it will boot and start the install (although with no HDD).

It seems like the IDE controller is working ok - it is what the DVD drive is using, but it cannot mount a VHD.  The error indicates a driver is not working (although the DVD on IDE works fine) so something to do with VHD?  I can attach the VHD in disk management, so it does not seem corrupt - again I have tried with both dynamic and fixed VHDs.

Full error is:

DSRM black screen issue with 2012R2 DC running on 2012R2 Hyper-V

Hi!

I have been testing AD disaster recovery with few domain controllers (Server 2012R2), running on Server 2012R2 and Hyper-V. Everything OK unless I try to log in to Domain Services Recovery Mode.
After username&passwd screen goes all black and nothing happens. Every time, every server (tested this with 3 different HP workstations, one HP ML350G6 server and one laptop). Hyper-V virtual machines tested both gen1 and gen2.
With 2008R2 Hyper-V and same domain controller on it everything works fine. This makes systemstate restore bit more difficult.

Am I missing something or is it just a bug? Googling didn't help this time.

BSOD - Critical Process Died

$

I am running Windows Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (Server Core) on three servers.  Unfortunately none of them have identical hardware configurations - thus I can't easily tell if there is some compatibility problem between a Microsoft update and my hardware. All three systems are setup to automatically download updates.

A few weeks ago one of the systems seemed to be rebooting regularly.  After connecting a monitor I saw a BSOD with a message "Critical Process Died."  I'm not 100% certain of this, but these BSOD reboot problems seemed to have started shortly after getting a recent automatic update(s)?

I have checked the Event Logs and looked for dumps or other logs, but haven't been able to locate anything that explained the chronic BSOD failures on the one server.  Nor have I found anything that tells me what critical process died.

After various attempts to fix the problem were unsuccessful I reformatted the drive and reinstalled Hyper-V Server 2012 R2.  The server seems to work okay with the intial re-installation of Hyper-V Server 2012 R2.

I configured the server and then start to download all the availlable patches.  After one (or two?) reboots I typically find only a single patch (KB2919355) left to be installed.  This seems to be the equivalent of the Windows 8.1 Update (and thus a required patch to get further patches)?

Typically when I try and install KB2919355 I'll get a BSOD during the installation process.  I have also tried rebooting and looking for new patches, after the initial BSOD, and I'll get a list of some other patches.  KB2919355 seems to be a group of fixes?  And it seems as though some part of KB2919355 got installed, but then I get the BSOD.  And after the reboot what I'm seeing is the list of the group (from KB2919355) which did not get installed due to the BSOD?

I continued on (rebooting if a BSOD occurred) and eventually got all patches installed.  But I still get occasional BSOD failures with Critical Process Died message.  The message says something about writing information to disk with 0% complete, but that number never changes.  After a while the system simply reboots.

After all patches were installed I came across the following commands and tried to use them.  The first time I attempted to use DISM I got a BSOD failure.  But I was eventually able to run both SFC and DISM.  Neither seemed to show any problems were found.

sfc /scannow

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

In one (of several) attempts to re-install Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 I made sure my BIOS was updated to the latest version and got the most recent driver for my Areca ARC-1222 controller.  Of the three servers one has the Areca RAID6 controller, one has an LSI RAID6 controller, and one is using Storage Spaces.  The LSI and SS systems have the same type of CPU, motherboard, and RAM. My Areca system has an older type of CPU, motherboard, and RAM.

This morning I tried to re-install Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 again.  After the first group of patches were installed and a reboot I got another large list of patches.  I don't recall off hand if this was the exact same order of patches that happened on prior attempts or not?  I had thought there was only one large list of patches, reboot, and then KB2919355 was the only remaining patch?  While trying to install this second large list of patches I got a BSOD.  I didn't notice whether or not KB2919355 was included in this second list or not?  These kind of inconsistent results/observations are why I'm not 100% sure that KB2919355 is causing my BSOD problems.  I believe KB2919355 is installed and working on my other two systems? Which might imply some type of a hardware problem with this system?

Unless someone has a better suggestion then later tonight I'll try re-installing Hyper-V Sever 2012 R2 again, but stopping before KB2919355 gets installed.  It seems to me the system is stable at this point, but I'll leave it that way for several hours to verify I don't get another BSOD.  If I don't have any problems without KB2919355 installed that implies my hardware is okay.  Although I suppose there could be some incompatibility between KB2919355 and my hardware and not simply a software problem with KB2919355?

I would appreciate suggestions others may have on how to rectify this problem.  Especially any thoughts on how to determine what critical process is failing and causing the BSOD.

I did come across a webpage about a whole list of symptoms related to KB2919355, but my specific problem didn't seem to be mentioned.

Thanks for any assistance.

Hyper-v usability - Stopping-Critical

I recently bought a new system, which works just fine. I installed Windows 2012 R2, installed a SSD drive and 3 Western Digital 4Tb Red drives. I've created my Storage pools and installed the hyper-v role. I've also patched Windows through the normal Windows update process. I started building the 1st VM machine on this system.

What I'm noticing is that the VM will tend to go into a critical state. If I stop it the machine will go into a stopping-critical state. If I leave the machine running it can sometimes go into a running-critical state. Restarting the host machine doesn't solve the problem. Restarting the Hyper-v server doesn't seem to resolve the issue either. And more importantly, it seems that the Hyper-v management interface refreshes VMs slowly. Note, the rest of Windows operates great. The switches and buttons inside Hyper-v respond fine, but the VMs don't work hardly at all. I've tried using generation 1 and generation 2 VMs, it doesn't tend to make much of a difference.

I thought at first that maybe my drives were just slow so I created a new VM on my SSD, which does something like 90,000 IOPS and tried it there. I get the same behavior. I think this issue looks like a coding problem with Hyper-v more so than an environment problem with Windows or the hardware.

Is this a known issue by Hyper-v? Why do VMs go into a critical state so often? What's the deal?

What logs are best to look at in this situation?
