Hi,

I've win 2012 std with hyperv role on it.

i've setup a virtual machine with 1 IDE disk and 1 SCSI disk all VHD on local disk.

when i monitor the server with veeam one it report that the Virtual Storage Error Count in large (9) on the SCSI driver even if this drive is not loaded at all.

why is that?

Virtual Machine Loses Network when Unchecking 'Enable Virtual Machine Queue'

Hi all, interesting situation I discovered today. I built a three node 2012 R2 hyper-v cluster and set up a teamed nic and enabled virtual machine queue on the nics. After that, I set up the base and maxprocessors on the teamed nics just like you're supposed to that allow the virtual machine queues to be assigned to the different processors. I set up about 10 virtual machines after that and everything is working just like it should. Then I remembered that there is a limited number of virtual machine queues and each virtual machine has the virtual machine queue option set to enabled by default.  So I shut off a virtual machine, brought up settings, opened up the Hardware Acceleration options under the Network adapter and unchecked "Enable Virtual Machine Queue" and restarted the virtual machine. I no longer had network connectivity. As soon as I 'Enabled Virtual Machine Queue' in settings, the network connectivity would come back.  It's not supposed to work like this, is it? It does this for every virtual machine I have. Anybody know why this is?  Any feedback appreciated.

Hyper-V Manager - RPC Call failed

We have 2 Hyper-V servers that we are unable to connect to each other in Hyper-V manager.

This is the error that we got when trying to connect to the remote server:

An error occurred while attempting to connect to server "". Check that the Virtual Machine Management service is running and that you are authorized to connect to the server.

When we are rebooting the servers, Hyper-V Manager is able to connect to the remote server for a certain period of time (like 1 minute) and then it disconnect and gives us that error: RPC call failed.

In event viewer, we are seeing this error:

DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer using any of the configured protocols; requested by PID     100c (C:\Windows\system32\ServerManager.exe).

We tried to change the DCOM permissions without any success.

When we are trying from another machine, we are able to connect to the server, with Hyper-V Manager. But when we are trying between these 2 machines, we got these errors.

We are using Windows Server 2012 R2.

Free backup options for Hyper-V Cluster, VHD, CSV Volume, all based on Win 2012 R2 Standard

I have a Dell R710 + Win2012 R2 - File Server + WSB + VSS backup components and a 2.5 TB partition with iSCSI Server Target, presenting the 2.5 TB disk space to all Hyper-V Hosts

4 X Del M600/610 Blades WIn2012 R2 - HYper-V, FailoverCLuster + WSB + VSS backup components and every Hyper-V Host accessing a "c:\clusterstorage\volume1" 2.5 TB disk space area to store several VHD files (in root, c:\clusterstorage\volume1)

WHat free options do I have to backup all VMs?

Windows Server Backp is an option? When i open the WSB, i can see the VMs and all .VHDs located on "c:\clusterstorage\volume1" as options to backup.

Can I simply backup all .VHD files stored in "c:\clusterstorage\volume1"? (i know that i´ll backup all .VHD files, entirelly, all job backup i´ll run)

There is another free option to backup? Altaro? Veeem? StarWInd? Cobian?

Improper Install of Hyper-V 2012 R2 Integration Services on 2008 R2 VMs

I have two VMs that have one or more missing/broken services after upgrading to Integration Services 6.3.9600.16384.  On one VM the Hyper-V Remote Desktop Virtualization Service is missing and the Hyper-V Data Exchange Service won't start.  The other VM was missing the Hyper-V Remote Desktop Virtualization Service.  I was able to create that service by restoring registry entries from another VM with working integration services and re-registering the DLLs from the driver, but the service won't start.  Both services that won't start return the error "1083: The executable program that this service is configured to run in does not implement the service".   I also tried an Offline Install of Integration Services, but that didn't fix anything.  Since I am running 2008 R2, there is no uninstall available (I did modify the powershell script from the abve link to uninstall, but it didn't work).  I have been un-successful in finding a way to trick/force the installer to install again over top of itself.

Virtual Machines lose access to network

We have continual problems with losing network connectivity to the virtual machines hosted on a Hyper-V host (the host is running Hyper-V Server 2012 R2), it goes down 2 – 3 times per week.

Situation:

  • All 3 Windows 2008 R2 virtual machines on the host lose connectivity to the outside world at the same random time (they are the only 3 on the host).
  • When this occurs the host can still ping the 3 virtual machines and the host is reachable.
  • When this occurs the 3 virtual machines can ping the host and each other, but nothing else outside of the host (request timed out followed by destination host unreachable)
  • Nothing in the hardware or Windows event logs on the host indicates there is a problem. No indications of issues in the VM event logs either.
  • Restarting the virtual machines does not fix the issue
  • Brand new HP hardware, Broadcom nic drivers were upated early on
  • VMQ is disabled on the VM's
  • We are not using nic teaming or clustering
  • Restarting the host temporarily resolves the problem (during the restart the vms are just placed in a saved state).
  • The host is running Hyper-V Server 2012 R2
  • The switch ports that the 2 network cables are plugged into (1 for RDP access to host and 1 for the VM traffic) show no errors on the switch.
  • This sounds like an issue with the Virtual switch but I can't find anything in the logs that gives me a hint.

No network connectivity for VMs with tagged VLANs after upgrade to W2K12 R2

Hi all

I have a lab consisting of 2 Mac Mini Servers, late 2009 model, most often running Hyper-V on the newest evaluation versions of Windows Server. With Windows Server 2012, everything was running smoothly. After upgrading to Windows Server 2012 R2, all VMs that are assigned to a VLAN lost network connectivity (aka "Enable virtual LAN identification" in the VM NIC settings). VMs using no vlan id work as expected!

While doing research it seems like there are some network-related problems with W2K12 R2 floating around, but I was unable to find any useful info matching my problem.

Installing W2K12 R2 Update 1 did not help in any way. After quite some hours with eliminating possible problem sources, I seem to end up with this behavior being a BUG in Windows Server 2012 R2.

Here some details for anybody willing to doublecheck that I did not overlook anything:

The server setup

: both servers are configured identically. The build-in NIC is assigned to a virtual switch of type "External", and is shared with the management OS. Each host has an additional FastEthernet USB adapter, which is also configured as virtual switch of type "External", but not shared with the OS.

The upstream switch

is configured to send untagged traffic for the management network, and tagged traffic for all VM networks, on all ports that are connected to the lab server (meaning both for the built-in and for the USB network adapter). The switch config was not touched in the OS upgrade process.

Misc settings:

1. When setting "Enable virtual LAN identification for management operating system" and re-configuring the switch to send tagged traffic also for management network, then the management OS also looses network connectivity.

2. Un-checking the "Allow management operating system to share this networking adapter" does not help either. When running Get-NetAdapter I see that the physical adapter (Ethernet) has the same MAC-address as the virtual adapter (vEthernet), as somewhat described here.

3. Attaching the VMs to the vitual switch using the USB network adapter does not help either, so I am inclined to rule out a driver related problem since the problem show on two completely different NICS - unless Microsoft somewhat has made changes to VLAN traffic handling in Hyper-V/virtual switch!

Device Manager reports the built-in NIC

as VEN_10DE / DEV_0AB0, and according to pcidatabase.com this is the "NForce 9300 LAN/SATA/SMBUS/SMU/GPU" controller. Device Manager reports it as "NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller Properties", driver version 7.3.1.7336 from 23.02.2012. When checking the NIC configuration (Device Manager/NVIDIA .. Network Controller, Properties, Advanced), I see that the propertyPriority & VLAN with value ofPriority Enabled. When changing this toPriority & VLAN Enabled, management OS also looses network connectivity. The VMs still do not have any network connectivity. - In short: it seems like Window Server 2012 R2 has - at least in my lab scenario - a serious problem handling any VLAN-related traffic. Windows Server 2012 was working flawlessly. Any hints appreciated, or some feedback if other are experiencing similar issues.

best approach for hyper-v infrastructure

$

Hi,

We are managing an hyper-v infrastructure compose of 5 hyper-v physical hosts running Windows Server 2008 R2, this servers are in an active directory, but the virtual machines running on this hyper-v hosts are in different active directory, Is there any advantage running this platform in this way? I mean, considering issues like security, managing, etc, which is a better approach, keep it running as is, or consolide both Hyper-v hosts and virtual machines in a same Active directory domain?

I would appreciate your opinions so much.

Greetings!

Are the Replicated HyperV VMs activated ?

Hello,

I have an activated windows server 2012 R2 Std Edition. Using the same license I activated two Virtual machines running on hyper-V of this server 2012 R2. I activated the replication of one virtual machine. It is replicated on another server also running an activated windows server 2012 R2 Std Edition.

Is this replicated VM automatically activated or do I need to buy another license in order to activate it ?

Cordially,

RE: virtual machines going offline and virtual disks going offline when Netgear router is restarted (physical router connected to ISP)

Hello everyone I am currently running a 2 node microsoft windows server 2012 failover cluster and i have a funky issue that is happening ONLY when the physical router connected to the WAN is restarted. a bit more information to help with trouble shooting: 2 nodes (identical in specs/build) are connected to 1 synology NAS where i have created the iscsi luns that are mounted on the 2 nodes via mpio (round robing w/ subset). Every thing runs smoothly until the physical netgear router is rebooted from time to time.

When i reboot the router the virtual disks in the cluster go offline and so do the associated virtual machines. They will only come back online when the router is up and running once again.

Any ideas on what can be causing this ?

Shared VHDX on CSV... Error opening handle for initiator The request is not supported.

Hi. Im having an issue in my lab testing out the shared vhdx functionality of 2012 R2.

The hardware is as follows2x HP DL380G5 with 2xHP P800 Smart Array controllers 2x500GB SATA SSD 2x1TB SATA HDD. Ive used Starwind to create 2 Cluster Shared Volumes on which my shared VHDX files are.

The issue im having is that after the creation of shared vhdx files (3-4 hours) any failover change in the vm configuration will result in Error opening handle for initiator. Initiator: {460b2b45-2f5a-485f-b045-60b68b655895}. Hostname: HYPERV1. File: \SQL QUORUM.VHDX:SHAREDVIRTUALDISK. Error: The request is not supported..

Ive set the ISCSI sync adapters to "dont allow cluster and client communication" and prevented it being registered in dns (nslookup only shows one ip) yet every shared vhdx has this issue.

Can anyone suggest if this is a hardware issue or software ? It is such a timesaver compared to multipath io and iscsi on the guests id like to get it working.

Windows 8.1 Pro - Hyper-V Can I create a shareable disk?

I am using Windows 8.1 Pro with Hyper-V. Can I use a Synology NAS and create iSCSI LUNs which are shared between TWO virtual machines (running Linux) - a shareable disk.

Or is this possible only in Windows 2012 Server?

Thanks

Hey Guys

Sorry if is a dumb question or there is already a builtin solution for this.

But im looking for a tool, script or something to export my Hyper-V configuration (with hosts, vms, virtual switches) to a visio diagram. The more automated better.

there is such a thing?

Thanks

VM on Hyper-V runs ver slow

We are running Hyper-V on windows 2012 R2 servers. VMs on one of 4 Dell PowerEdge servers run very slow. I have tried different OS such as windows XP and Windows 7. All have the same issue. If I move the VM to different Hyper-V host, it runs normal. If I run the VM without network, it works great. Only when I enable the network, it runs terrible slow. I thought it is network issue. I have installed the latest NIC driver. I have disable offload, but can’t fix the problem. Help please.

Hi,

I have configured Hyper-V in My Windows8.1 machine and installed 3 VMs with Windows8, windows Vista and Windows XP SP3.

I am able to connect network from VM with Windows 8 but unable to connect network with VMs with OS Visat and XP.

for all VMs, I have created ONE Vertual Network in view of using one VM only at a time.

So, Same virtual network adapert given access to the network in Windows 8 VM but not in Vista and XP VMs

Please give me suggestion to rectify this.

Thanks,

Are multiple external vSwitches possible to create using same TeamedNIC ?

$

Hello,

I'm having this difficulty to create multiple external vSwitches using NIC teaming. SwitchIndependent is the only option I can utilize since I just have one Layer 2 switch. With LoadBalancingAlgorithm i'm leaving it to PowerShell (-WhatIf usually report it will use 'TransportPort' if no algorithm specified to determine that for me, since the objective is to be able to carve multiple external switches (for management, VMs traffic, clustering etc) using  NIC teaming based on only two physical NICs in server.

Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 has identical 2x GBoE NICs installed. Say NICs are named GBNIC1/GBNIC2. They both are connected to same switch. First I create a NIC teaming using following:

1. Create NIC team using GBNIC2/GBNIC2

new-NetLbfoTeam -Name TestTeam -TeamMembers GBNIC1,GBNIC2

Above command results in a team; having a teamed NIC with name "TestTeam". Now this team is ready to host external switches.

2. Create external switch based on teamed NIC "TestTeam"

Next I would like to create an external switch. 1st external switch is created using following command:

new-VMSwtich -Name e-vSwitch1 -NetAdapterName TestTeam -AllowManagementOS 0

Above command results in an external switch created fine.

3. Create additional external switch based on same teamed NIC "TestTeam"

After 1st external switch "e-vSwitch1" is created, repeaing same command in step2 with a different value for -Name (for example "e-vSwitch2") it complains stating the "TestTeam" interface is already bound to another exetrnal swtich.

Question: Can we not create more than 1 external switch using NIC teaming ?  was this not the purpose of NIC teaming; to be bale to carve out multiple external networks and breaking free from one external swtich--to--one physical NIC in host?

Please advise where/what is wrong?

Regards,

Shahzad.

SQL 2012 on hyper-V

We have moved from vmware to hyper-V virtualization.

We have windows server 2012 and sql server 2012.
When executing some query on SQL server the CPU time is much greater than CPU time for the same query on the same sql server with the similar resources but on vmware virtualization.
(the query doesn't produce IO, since all data pages are in RAM - so, the problem is CPU)

I have tested the most simple queries as the most complex queries with the same execution plans on both servers. There is always similar difference in cpu time, couple of times slower.

Is there some well known configuration of hyper-v, which is optimal for running sql server on it? What should i check, any idea?

Adding Remote Users to SBS 2011

$

Hello,

Apologies if this is already answered elsewhere.  I just can't find anything quite like what I'm looking for.

We are running SBS 2011 on our server.  It comes with two remote desktop licences but we need more.  It now appears that I cannot add extra licences to the server as it is running SBS and I'm told that the only thing I can do is purchase Windows Server 2012 to run on a separate machine which will give me two more remote desktop licences with it, and I can purchase packs of CALs to increase the amount of RD users that I have logging in.

a) Is this correct - the cost is going to be pretty prohibitive.... or is there any other alternatives?

b) If this is correct, what version of Windows Server 2012 will I need to buy to give me the option of adding more CALs at a later date?

Many thanks to all who contribute in this forum.  Look forward to hearing from you.

settings of VMQ?

We have around 100VMs .I want to ask about an error I got in our environment recently .And i searched everywhere and a bit confused about VMQs as I got this error in HyperV Cluster hosts.

“Available processor sets of the underlying physical NICs belonging to the LBFO team NIC /DEVICE/{D2345946-C500-492B-AA6F-1DC2FF258E94} (Friendly Name: Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver) on switch 8E2B961A-4004-496D-B83B-6EFDFF639B9A (Friendly Name: ConvergedSwitch) are not configured correctly. Reason: The processor sets overlap when LBFO is configured with sum-queue mode.”

We have 4 nodes each with :

CPU:2x8 Cores=16 Cores and 32 Logical Processors.Hyper Threading enabled.

Network:2x10 Gbps

OS: Windows Server 2012 R2

One network Team :

                Teaming Mode: Switch Independent.

                Load Balancing Mode: Dynamic.

Standby adapter: None (All adapters active)

One virtual switch and two virtual NICs with the allow management OS access to the switch set to true .

What would be the recommended settings of VMQ or dVMQ ?and should I leave VMQ enabled on the virtual machines ?

Hyper-v R2 Network Virtualization - ms_netwnv Component not showing up

We are a VMWare workshop but interested in the new windows 2012 R2 Hyper-v.  So I've set up a lab with two desktop PC running Windows 2012 R2 to test the Network Virtualization feature.  However when trying to use Powershell to enable it on the NIC, I received an error (see below).

Enable-NetAdapterBinding Ethernet -ComponentID ms_netwnv

Further, I do not see ms_netwnv as a component of my NIC.  Is there some configuration that I'm missing?

Thanks a lot!
