Experts,

Grant-VMConnectAccess - Grants a user or users access to connect to a virtual machine or machines.

As get-help didnt give much details, I am posting it here.

How should the end user access a VM if I have granted access using this commandlet?

HyperV Manager?

Cheers !

Hyper-V 3.0 VM stuck in "Stopping" state

We are running Hyper-V on a 2012 server and for the 20nd time in as many months I've logged into a VM and restarted or migrated to another host it but it's stuck in the "stopping" state in Hyper-V 3.0 and doesn't give me any Turn Off, Shutdown, Save, Pause or Reset options.  The only thing I've been able to do is to schedule a time to reboot the Hyper-V server.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Is there any command I can run get the VM  top turn off  w/o having to reboot or restart the Hyper-V service?

Our host environment as below:

HP C7000 Blade Chasis

16x ProLiant BL460c Gen8 Server (Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2650 0 @ 2.00GHz (8 Cores) - 256GB Ram)

Blades server have Hp FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port

2x HP VC Flex-10 Enet Module on Chassie

HP VC 8Gb 20-Port FC Module on Chassie

Also We turned off tcp checksum offloading but it didn't work.

We've opened case to HP support but they analyzing our system and didn't find any problem to themself.

Does anybody have any fixes for these problems?

Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V role - 2003 VM's hang on shut down or restart

Hi

I have a standalone 2012 R2 with the Hyper-V role installed.  It hosts a number of VM's of varying operating systems, but I have a problem with two 2003 R2 SP2 virtual servers.  Both of them are unable to restart or shut down properly, they stop responding at the grey screen after the shutting down dialog box has disappeared.  Both have up to date integration services installed.  Both will require a turn off or reset to bring the VM to a working state.  There is no difference between initiating the reboot from inside the VM OS or from the Hyper-V console, in both cases the same issue occurs.  No relevant errors are noted in the event logs of the VM (last event is the event log service stopping) or in the logs on the Hyper-V host. Other VM's (e.g. 2008 R2) have no problems restarting or shutting down.

I am wondering if this is another "feature" of the new R2 release?

Hyper-V on Windows 8.1 is messing with MAC address when sharing my Wifi card

$

Hello,

I'm using Hyper-V on Windows 8.1 to build a complete SharePoint Development environment.

All of my VM are following this scheme:

  • a "local" private network shared between the host and all VM, using a static IP address plan (192.168.10.0/24)
  • a RJ45 external network, attached to my physical ethernet card. This network uses DHCP protocol
  • a WIFI external network, attached to my wireless network card. This network also use DHCP protocol

When plugged on the ethernet card, I have no issue. Both the host and the guest OSes are getting a valid IP address.

However, when I try to connect on the wireless card, I get some weird errors. Actually, my guest OS are getting the same IP address than the host. This issue an IP address conflict.

Someone else got the same kind of behavior : Windows 8.1 Hyper-V : IP address conflict on Guest OS

I've checked my MAC address plan, and it seems correct.

Using WireShark (a tool I'm not used to I admit), I can see that all DHCP request of the guest os, are sending the host MAC address, and not the guest' one.

Does anyone have an answer to this weird behavior?

Thanks,

steve

Cannot start imported Hyper-V VM: The Security ID structure is invalid (0x80070539).

I haven't seen any mention of this in any of the forums. I'm attempting to import a virtual machine to a Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V system. Normally this is fairly straight-forward. However, the imported virtual machine will not start. I'm getting the following error message:

I'm not familiar with what is going on here. Any ideas?

Linux Integration Services Version 3.5 for Hyper-V

We tested the 08R2 under, VM which is CentOS 6.3, after installing the Integration Services 3.5, the release of dynamic memory support discovery (Ballooning)
I ran a VM eat small C program memory, Hyper-V can be seen in the "memory needs to go up," the program will close down.

But seemingly not support Hot Add to rise (over Hyper-V in the initial set of memory) Is there any way to do this?

Also in the Linux Kernel VM also need to recompile it? There seems to be online in order to support Hot Add to mention Linux Kernel need to hit up a Hyper-v patch, do not know whether it is true?

Windows Server 2012 R2 - HyperV Role Installation - An unexpected error occured

$

I am facing this strange issue with our brand new blade HP BL460c gen8 servers.

Its not happening on all. Mostly if we do it among the first steps after OS installation, HyperV role gets installed successfully.

Here is the usual steps I did

OS Installation, Network Configuration, Adding to domain

Patch updates - 8 updates which was listed on Windows Update got installed

Powerpath

Navisphere

Fail-over Cluster

HyperV

Suspecting the patches, I tried even remove all the windows patches which got installed. No luck.

I dont see anything apart from the same below message on the event viewer.

To confirm the server is fine, I just reinstalled one server and immediately after joining to the domain, Installed HyperV Role, which was successful.

Any clue?

2012R2 - Hyper-V replica size on a single VM balloons daily

$

I'm having an odd issue that just cropped up with Hyper-V replica. I have 5 VMs on two hosts replicating to an offsite host.  Each of them are setup properly, with a dedicated paging drive that is not being replicated. Replicas typically take a few seconds to a few minutes, and I have not had this problem in the past year and a half since implementing.
One of these servers is a 2012 file server hosting about 600GB of data, with deduplication running overnight.  A few days ago I noticed the replication state was "Critical".  I kicked of a resync, and it would get to 30 or 40% and then stop.  I removed the replication and re-added it, let the initial replica finish, then the resync, then it started replicating fine.  The next morning the state was "critical" again, and it showed that it had 25GB it needed to replicate.  This took several hours, it finished, then the next morning it needed 18GB.  It also wanted to kick off another resync, which took all day.  Now every 12 hours or so the replication is falling behind (as of right now it says it needs to replicate 25GB).  The odd thing is that this server is only adding or modifying 2GB to 3GB daily, and I am stumped as to why the replica sizes are so big.  The servers are all healthy.

unable to create External Virtual Networks

$

hello, running server 2008 r2 hyper-v core build 6.1.7600 on HP ProLiant DL380 G6

I have 4 physical NICs and was trying to create 4 external virtual switches in Virtual Network Manager with or without the "Allow management operating system to share this network adapter"option, like I have already done on a couple of other hyper-v core. Get one of the following behaviors:

1. stuck in "Applying changes" or "cannot enumerate network adapters" forever. At which point either the NVSPWMI (hyper-v network management) service stops and i have to restart it, or restart the hyper-v box

2. or get "Error applying new virtual network changes. setup switch failed." NVSPWMI occasionally stops and have to restart the service.

3. or get "cannot bind to "hp nc328i.." because it is already bound to another virtual network". When i get this error i try to restart NVSPWMI, then use nvspbind /u option or /d vms_pp to unbind the vms_pp service at which point I go back to issue #1 and keep cycling through these issues regardless of which one of the 4 adapters i try to configure. Occasionally I can add a virtual switch without the "Allow management..." option and then check the option later, but its not consistent with the other adapters. At the very most I can have one External virtual adapter.

Tried the following:

a. netcfg -u vms_pp ; netcfg -c p -i vms_pp; to remove all Virtual Adapters and reconfigure.

b. removed the Physical adapters and reinstalled using devcon.exe. and updated drivers from version 5... to 7... something.

c. removed all virtual adapters running regedit as system user using PsExec.exe utility. I also mistakenly removed the Microsoft Virtual Switch Adapter, and then reimported the regedit key once I realized I did that. However the netcfg -c p -i vms_pp should take care of that.

d. nvspbind utility with either /u /b /e /d options for the respective adapter.

Spent about 10 hours trying every possible scenario to have at least 3 much needed virtual adapters running for this production box, have one slave DC and DFS on this hyperv. I have till Tuesday to get it to work, and only left option for me at this point is to rebuild the entire server. I heard that removing and reinstalling the HyperV core service does not always fix the issue, because you are supposed to install these adapters in a certain order.

Anyone have any other suggestion for me to try? Probably going to rebuild this Sunday 1/19 or Monday 1/20.

Thank you.

Standalone Hyper-V is too painful to use

$

This is really a complaint not a question.  I've been using the free version of VMware ESXi for development testing for years.  I keep reading about how Hyper-V is catching up to VMware in features.  I was excited about the free stand-alone version and decided to try it out.  I downloaded the Hyper-V 2012 RC standalone version and installed it.  This thing is a trainwreck!  There is not a chance in hell that anyone will ever use this thing in scenarios like mine.  It obviously intented to be used by IT Geniuses in a domain only.  I would really like a version that I can up and running in less than half an hour like esxi.  How the heck is anyone going to evaluate it this in a reasonable manner?  I feel like it was just thrown out there so Microsoft could claim they have a free virtualization server like MS?

Steps for free ESXi.

1. Download from website burn to CD/DVD.

2. Boot from disc, follow steps to overwrite hard drive and install.

3. After reboot, config management IP address.

4. Go back to my desk and open my web browser to Management IP and download client.

5. Install ESX client and start running VMs!

Steps for Hyper-V

1. Download from website burn to CD/DVD.

2. Boot from disc, follow steps to overwrite hard drive and install.

3. After reboot, config management IP address.

4. Scour the internet for server tools that install the Hyper-V management snap-in for Win 7.

5. Install server management tools pack.

6. Go to add/remove and enable the Hyper-V snap-in.

7. Open Hypver-V snap-in and connect TRY to connect to box.

8. Receive generic authentication error message.

9. Spend several hours scouring the internet looking for registry hacks, firewall hacks that actually allow you to connect to a damn hyper-v box!

10. Eventually you come across the website/project. http://archive.msdn.microsoft.com/HVRemote

This site walks you through all the script changes/reboots you have to make to connect to bloody hyper-v!

Here is what I would prefer

I don't want to download any tools at all.  I just want a HTML5 web server on this box that allows me to do everything I can from the  Hyper-V console and doesn't make me configure anything other than a password.  It would be great if it was themed similar to the new Windows Azure Virtual Machines console.  I doesn't have to provide like a built-in viewer to actually interact with the VMs, I would be happy with a remote desktop style connection.

How can I add a second DNS IP to my cluster nodes? The TCP/IP properties button is disabled in my production network adapters.

Hi,

I need some help, please. This is my first cluster. It’s running Windows 2012 STD.

My two nodes have 3 networks adapters:

  • Production
  • Heartbeat
  • Storage

In addition, each one has a virtual switch, called Production, connected to the Production network adapter to allow communication between our VMs and the clients.

What is the problem?

I need to add a second DNS to the production network adapter but the TCP/IP button is disabled:

However I can edit the DNS list in the virtual network adapter (vEthernet) connected to the production network adapter:

I have the following questions:

  • If I add the second DNS to the virtual network adapter (vEthernet), this configuration applies for both (VMs and nodes)?
  • If my DC1 goes down my cluster nodes, not my VMs, will be able to resolve names if we add the second DNS to the virtual network adapter (vEthernet)? Their default DNS is DC1.
  • How can I add the second DNS to the TCP/IP configuration of the nodes if the properties button is disabled?

Thanks in advanced.

v-HBA Guest VM cannot Live Migration

Hi All,

I'm using Windows Server 2012 Data Center OS and configured the for the hyper-V server role with Fail-over cluster (4 Node – Cluster).

Each Physical server installed with Two Qlogic HBA Adapters.

We have configured following configuration on hyper-v Server and SAN (HP) storage.

  • Enabled the Virtual SAN Manager.
  • Created Each Hyper-V Host Virtual Fiber channel Switch. Each Host configured two adapters. (Fibre Channel SAN 1 /  Fibre Channel SAN 2) .
  • Using the HP storage and enabled the switch port level (N_Port ID Virtualization (NPIV).
  • Created new VM and assign new two vHBA Adapters. Each adapter having two sets of wwn numbers.
  • Each Adapter SET A wwn Address discovered by SAN switch and configured the zone . However SET B not discovered but we manually created the zone for SET B for both Adapters.
  • Present the Storage to the VM and installed the MPIO. SAN disk visible on the VM disk management.
  • During the live migrate the VM to different host I’m getting below error.

Live migration of 'Virtual Machine TEST-Server' failed.

Virtual machine migration operation for 'TEST-Server' failed at migration destination 'HV02'. (Virtual machine ID 378AE3E3-5A4F-4AE7-92F8-D47855C2D1C5)

The virtual machine 'TEST-Server' is not compatible with physical computer 'HV02'. (Virtual machine ID 378AE3E3-5A4F-4AE7-92F8-D47855C2D1C5)

Could not find a virtual fibre channel resource pool with ID 'New Fibre Channel SAN1'

Could not find a virtual fibre channel resource pool with ID 'New Fibre Channel SAN2'

I need some support from Expert for this issue. I’m trying to configure the Guest Cluster with HBA. The Quick Migration working fine but still failing with live migration. I want to resolve the live migration issue.

iSCSI connections for guests: how to set up?

$

0

A couple of questions:

1. If we wanted to set up iSCSI connections for guests such as SQL servers, what is the best way to handle this? For example, if we had four 10-Gb NICs and wanted to use as few of them as possible, is it common to turn two of the NICs into Virtual Switches accessible by the OS, then use these to connect both the host and the SQL guests? Or would the best option be to use two 10-Gb NICs for the Hyper-V Host's iSCSI connections only, and use the other two 10-Gb NICs as virtual switches which are dedicated to the SQL server iSCSI connections?

2. I know MPIO should be used for storage connections instead of teaming; if two NICs are teamed as a virtual switch, however, does this change anything? For example, if a virtual switch is created from a NIC team of two 10-Gb NICs, is it acceptable to create an iSCSI connection on a network adapter created on that virtual switch?

Routing issue

I have a 2K12 hyperV machine with 2 NIcs (192..1.11 & 192..112)

I recently downloaded an appliance that creates a private switch with a network id 192.168.56.1, and the VM has 192.168.56.101. From IE or Chrome on the win 2012 box, when I typehttp://192.168.56.101 I reach the machine (web site inside it) but I can not do it from another machine (laptop or desktop they are on the same network as the hyper-V 192.168.1...) using IE or chrome. pinging the ip from the hyperv machine responds but not from others. I checked the route print and have this on the hyper-V

192.168.56.0    255.255.255.0         On-link      192.168.56.1    261
 192.168.56.1  255.255.255.255         On-link      192.168.56.1    261

the question is why I can connect from the machine itself but not others? What is needed to be added in the routing table on the other machines in order to be able to join this appliance from another machine

Thanks in advance

Serial Ports using HyperV in Ubuntu guest OS

$

I need to run a terminal session (term) from within the guest OS, Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS to a serial port on the Windows 8.1P host. In my case a USB to serial adapter that Windows has mapped to COM5.

I don't really know where to start.  In HyperV, under Settings, I see a Com1 and Com2 under hardware. The two options are None or Named pipe.  Not all that clear what to do here.

Presumably this is what will be visible to Ubuntu as  /dev/ttyXX   ??

Can anyone point the way to map a serial port into Ubuntu?   Or a suitable workaround?

Thanks.

Hyper-V Replica from 2012 R2 to 2012

Hi Guys,

Hope you are all doing well.

i have a questions about Hyper-V replica feature, in our company we just upgrade Hyper-V failover cluster from Windows 2012 to Windows 2012 R2. Right now hyper-v cluster release in the primary site is 2012 R2 however the replica site is still running 2012.

before upgrade:

Primary site ( hyper-v cluster with 4 nodes) ( windows 2012)

replica site ( hyper-V cluster with 2 nodes ) (Windows 2012 )

both sites are joined to our Active directory.

32 Mbps WAN Link speed.

replication was working perfectly with no problems between 2 sites.

after upgrade:

Primary site ( hyper-v cluster with 4 nodes) ( windows 2012 R2)

replica site ( hyper-V cluster with 2 nodes ) (Windows 2012 - not upgraded yet)

both sites are joined to our Active directory.

32 Mbps WAN Link speed.

replication does not work after upgrade.

nothing changed except the upgrade from 2012 to 2012 R2

should we upgrade the cluster at the replica site?? is there any software required  for Hyper-V Replica to operate successfully.

Appreciate your help .

Many Thanks,

Reading hyper-v pass-through disks using WMI?

How do I read pass-through disks for a guest VM from a Hyper-V using WMI? I'd like to read the pass-through disks that are available to a guest VM using the below mentioned ways:

1. Add a disk to Hyper-V server, take it offline and assign it as a physical disk to VM

2. Configure iSCSI initiator in guest VM to get a disk directly from storage array

3. Use VFC to export a fiber channel lun to guest VM directly.

Thanks/Hem
