Error when creating VHDX via Hyper-V Manager remotely

$

Hey all!

So, I installed Hyper-V 2012 Core on a box, patched it, and then joined it to the domain. If I connect to the server via Hyper-V Manager from either a Windows 8 machine or Server 2012 machine and try to create a VM, it says "There was an unexpected error in configuring the hard disk on [Insert VM Name Here]." I feel like I've tried everything. I can not create the disk manually via the Manager on its own, before or after the VM being created. I can, however, create the disk via PowerShell with out a problem! Via PowerShell, I can create a dynamic VHDX disk every time without an issue.

I was curious if anyone has had this problem and/or knows a solution.

Thanks in advance!

HDCP Issues with Hyper V and AMD video drivers

Hello

I have purchased a legitimate copy of Windows 8 Pro and have acquired two films through Xbox video, I also have a Netflix account. Whenever I try to watch the purchased videos or play a movie through Netflix I receive the following errors.

After much research I understand that it can be caused by a combination of different things.

  • AMD Video Drivers
  • Hyper V
  • Windows Media Player/Xbox Video bug
  • Windows 8 bug

Here is my computer specification

As you can see I have the latest driver installed, I have also tested video playback from these apps on every previous version of the video driver. I also require Hyper V and Windows 8 (as is) for work so these things cannot be compromised.  I have also opened up posts on the following forums so please do not try and direct me to someone else.

Error code 1603 while trying to install Integration Services on an XP Pro SP2 "repaired" P2V VM

This is actually a solution.  I'm posting in case someone else runs into this problem.

I was experimenting with a trying to revive a dead PC.  It was an old Pentium III running a legacy app that had a hard disk fail.  I had a very old Ghost image but recent "data-only" backups.

Since I didn't have a PC to spare, I decided to try to Ghost the old image onto a VHD.  I was successful--VHD mount by AppAssure was very helpful.

But booting the VM resulted in a BSOD.  No problem I thought.  A repair install using the XP Pro CD should get it going.  It did.  Successfully boots but lacked Integration Services.  Able to login as the old local admin account.

Tried to install Integration Services as usual but part way through,  after "...framework install" or "ustor...something" and during "guest services", I got a 1603 error code.

After much fussing around I found that deep in the log files in C:\Windows (look for the most recent ones), there was an error trying to create the directory:  C:\program files\Hyper-V Integration Services".  I was local admin and the folder permissions for C:\Program Files" explicitly had full control for the local admin account so I couldn't understand why there was a problem.  Just on a lark, I gave "Everyone" full control over "C:\program files" and afterwards, re-running the Integration Services carried on to finish.

I'm too much of a noob to know what happened but I'm just reporting what I found was the solution.

Windows Storage Server 2012 ISO

Windows Storage Server 2012 Standard also includes 2 licenses for VMs, but I cannot find an ISO to create a Storage Server VM... Could somebody help me on this?

I'm running on a Dell PowerVault NX3200, and if I use the provided Dell OS DVD, I get an error "This is not a Dell Powervault device", which is indeed correct since it is running virtual. So that's not working, and I only find an evaluation version on the Microsoft website which can not be 'upgraded' to a full version.

Then I also contacted Dell, but they say it is not possible to do this... But since Microsoft indicates you can run the 2 VMs just like on a Windows Server 2012 Standard, I believe it should be possible...

Any suggestions on how to get this installed?

Thanks!

Hello Gurus

i have installed windows server 2012 RTM with Hyper-V. i already created virtual machine with virtual fiber channel adapter connected to physical one. sometimes when i restart the virtual machine it gets failed to start again and the following error appears in the event viewer of the host:

error id 21502
'Virtual Machine xyz' failed to start.

'xyz' failed to start. (Virtual machine ID number)

'xyz' Synthetic FibreChannel Port: Failed to start reserving resources with Error 'Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.' (0x800705AA). (Virtual machine IDnumber)

'xyz': Operation for virtual port (C003FF18F98C000E) failed with an error: No physical port available to satisfy the request (Virtual machine IDnumber).

error id 1069
Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine xyz' of type 'Virtual Machine' in clustered role 'xyz' failed. The error code was '0x5aa' ('Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.').

Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

appreciate your help

HyperV planned failover fails reversing replication. FQDN is truncated.

Hi,

I am having an issue with planned failover between two hyper-v hosts

- HostA and HostB are on the same domain
- DNS is all fine both servers can ping each other using FQDN and hostname
- Using kerberos authentication between hosts

I can go to the "other" host fine and manually start the reverse replication fine, it just will not do it automatically as part of the planned failover. The same thing happens regardless of which way I am failing over HostA to HostB or HostB to HostA

A screenshot probably explains it best, notice the second highlighted section is missing the .LOCAL

I have only found one other reference to this issue http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/af8704b3-6623-40ba-af78-567f69a9eca1/hyperv-2012-replication-planed-failover-failed-to-resolve-the-replica-server#c7a08d0e-479a-40d1-8b64-fac309741e21

Is Hyper-V Virtual Switch limited by the slowest NIC on the host system?

$

For the last two weeks I have been playing with Hyper-V Server 2012 R2. My system is based on a Celeron 847, so I wasn't expecting stellar performance.

The mainboard has one integrated Realtek 1GB NIC.

I installed Windows 7 as a Guest and created an external virtual switch, which I connected to the onboard NIC and allowed the host to share the connection.

This lead to a very bad user experience when connecting to the guest system via remote desktop (freezes every few seconds). I searched for a solution and found a lot of recommendations to add a dedicated NIC for the guests.

The only thing I could get my hands on on a Sunday was an Apple 100MBit USB Ethenet Adapter which I sometimes use on my MacBook Air. I installed the drivers on the host and the freezes inside the guest system went away.

Because I didn't want to transfer files between the guests and the host via an external 100MBit connection, I added a second switch, set to internal. I configured both the host and the guest with static IPs on the internal switch so that I could be sure which route the IP packets would take.

I mapped a share on the host as a network drive on the guest (using the IP address, not the host name) and transferred some large files between host and guest and noticed that I could only transfer 10MByte/s.

On a hunch, I installed a real 1GB NIC today and removed the USB Adapter. I reconfigured the external switch to use the new NIC and did some more tests. Transfer rates went up to 50MByte/s! That is the same rate I get when transferring files from an external machine to the host, so I guess that this is the limit of what the CPU can handle, which is fine by me.

Is the internal speed of the virtual switches really limited by the slowest NIC connected to a virtual switch? Or am I missing something? I'm pretty sure that the IP packets aren't going through the external switch / adapter, because I can pull the network cable and the transfer isn't interrupted. Besides, using Resource Monitor on the guest I can see that only the virtual NIC connected to the internal switch is registering any relevant traffic.

If anyone has any insight into this, please share. It might even help me to troubleshoot a seemingly similar problem we have at work on a 2008 R2 Server, which our Sysadmin hasn't been able to figure out.

Thanks

Configure a VLAN networking in Hyper-V 2008 R2 and VMM 2008 R2

$

Hello everybody,

I have a question regarding VLAN configuration in 2008 R2. The situation is like this:

1) We have a cluster of 4 Hyper-V nodes - BL40 servers, C7000 chassis  and 2x Virtual Connect Flex Fabric 10 GB modules

2) We have a separate network that provide access to DMZ zone, with the following configuration:

No host access. In VMM the network is set in "Access Mode" with specific VLAN configured.

Last friday I`ve added a VM to the DMZ zone, by configuring the VM virtual adapter with the same specific DMZ VLAN (using VMM and without shutting down the VM) .I`ve configured the IP addresses and everything was fine. Until we live migrated the VM to host 1 - at that particular moment the network connection to the VM stopped. I`ve started to check all configurations and realized that the network configuration in VMM was changed to "Trunk" with only the DMZ VLAN listed. I revert to "Access" mode - the VM has network connection again.Until we live migrated the VM again and faced the same situation. We have shutdown the VM, deleted the network adapter the VM had, configured new one with the DMZ Vlan, double checked that all Hyper-V  nodes are in "Access" mode with only one VLAN. We booted the VM, configured the IP address and the VM had access again. Until we live migrated...We refreshed the VM configuration in the cluster and that brought no change. We then disconnect/ reconnect the VM network card to the DMZ network and the VM had access again. Until we live migrated... Then we tried to remove the VLAN identification on the VM network card itself and the problem went away. So now the working configuration is:

1) No VLAN identificaiton on the VM network card

2) Hosts Network configuration in VMM - Access mode with specific VLAN , no Host access

Could someone help and let me know if we did something wrong? Was was the cause of these problems?

If we have access mode on the virtual switch, shouldn`t we have also VLAN specified on the virtual machine network card? According tothis article - I should. Quote:

"
To give a virtual machine external access on the virtual network that is in access mode, you must configure the virtual machine to use the same VLAN ID that is configured in the access mode of the virtual network."

PS: We have many other VMs, configured to use VLANs with the only difference that they are connected to Trunk network with host access(VMM hosts network configuration).

Svilen

missing disk of storage pool, SRV12 Essentials under Win8 / Hyper-V

$

SRV 12 Essentials Storage Pool misses one of two disks. Both disks had been attached as physical disks to the virtual server under Hyper-V. That was fine, but after a restart (probably without power connection on one of the two disks) now the missing disk shows up as a physical disk on the host Win8, but not as a logical disk there. So, this logical disk can not be re-attached to SRV 12 Ess. As it is missing there, the storage pool is gone - without indicating a failure. The second physical disk of that pool shows up as a physical disk on Win 8 machine, as a logical disk, too (offline) and we could set it online on the guest operating system. With all data from the former pool. How the hell can we bring the other physical drive back to the pool? By the way: Win8 storage space can manage both drives, shows both as online.

Standalone Hyper-V is too painful to use

$

This is really a complaint not a question.  I've been using the free version of VMware ESXi for development testing for years.  I keep reading about how Hyper-V is catching up to VMware in features.  I was excited about the free stand-alone version and decided to try it out.  I downloaded the Hyper-V 2012 RC standalone version and installed it.  This thing is a trainwreck!  There is not a chance in hell that anyone will ever use this thing in scenarios like mine.  It obviously intented to be used by IT Geniuses in a domain only.  I would really like a version that I can up and running in less than half an hour like esxi.  How the heck is anyone going to evaluate it this in a reasonable manner?  I feel like it was just thrown out there so Microsoft could claim they have a free virtualization server like MS?

Steps for free ESXi.

1. Download from website burn to CD/DVD.

2. Boot from disc, follow steps to overwrite hard drive and install.

3. After reboot, config management IP address.

4. Go back to my desk and open my web browser to Management IP and download client.

5. Install ESX client and start running VMs!

Steps for Hyper-V

1. Download from website burn to CD/DVD.

2. Boot from disc, follow steps to overwrite hard drive and install.

3. After reboot, config management IP address.

4. Scour the internet for server tools that install the Hyper-V management snap-in for Win 7.

5. Install server management tools pack.

6. Go to add/remove and enable the Hyper-V snap-in.

7. Open Hypver-V snap-in and connect TRY to connect to box.

8. Receive generic authentication error message.

9. Spend several hours scouring the internet looking for registry hacks, firewall hacks that actually allow you to connect to a damn hyper-v box!

10. Eventually you come across the website/project. http://archive.msdn.microsoft.com/HVRemote

This site walks you through all the script changes/reboots you have to make to connect to bloody hyper-v!

Here is what I would prefer

I don't want to download any tools at all.  I just want a HTML5 web server on this box that allows me to do everything I can from the  Hyper-V console and doesn't make me configure anything other than a password.  It would be great if it was themed similar to the new Windows Azure Virtual Machines console.  I doesn't have to provide like a built-in viewer to actually interact with the VMs, I would be happy with a remote desktop style connection.

Hyper-V - 'Failed to start the virtual machine 'test' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running.'

Hi all,

Having a bit of a nightmare with Hyper-V on my Windows 8 Pro laptop - Whenever I create a new VM and try to start it I receive the following error;

'Failed to start the virtual machine 'test' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running.'

I sometimes also receive an error saying something along the lines of 'Unable to change virtual machine state'

I have done a lot of searching a seen two common answers - The first is to try removing the Hyper-V role and re-adding it - I have tried this several times to no avail. (Intel VT and all virtualisation capabilities are enabled in BIOS). The second issue it would seem some people have had relates to editing the VMX configuration file and adding the linehypervisor.cpuid.v0 = "FALSE" - I thought VMX files were only present in VMware Virtual Machines...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

James

VHD backup of a Windows 2000 desktop machine that gives me the error message "This copy of Windows must be activated by Microsoft before you can log on. Please ask your systems administrator to activate Windows on this computer"

I have a VHD backup of a Windows 2000 desktop machine that gives me the error message "This copy of Windows must be activated by Microsoft before you can log on. Please ask your systems administrator to activate Windows on this computer"   when Hyper V tries to boot the VHD Backup. The VHD runs programs  for  specialized LAB machines and as such was modified by the vendor that sold the LAB machine.

Does anyone know how to get around this issue in Hyper V ?
