Virtual Server keeps loosing connection to the internet

$

We have the following setup and issue:

2 servers running windows 2012 with one virtual host (Hyper-V)  running on each machine.

Each virtual host has a virtual switch with a virtual NIC connected to it (Broadcom BCM5709C NetXtreme II GigE (NDIS VBD Client)

Roughly once a day the virtual machine  losses internet connectivity while remaining accessible from other servers within our workgroup. The problem occurs on both servers.

Restarting the virtual host fixes the problem until the virtual host loses its internet connectivity again - happens approximately once every 24 hours.

Event log does not reveal anything relevant.

Please help

Why are my hyper-V network connections so slow?

Hello,

I have a Dell PowerEdge T620 with Intel I350 gigabit nics.   The server and the nics have all the latest firmware and drivers.

I have each VM on its own dedicated network Virtual switch so there  is a quad nic in the server and each VM has a dedicated nic.

The VMs say they are connected at 10Gbit.

When I try to copy between 2012 servers (VM to VM or VM to Host) the fastest I get is about 50 MB/s

When I try to copy between 2012 and a 2003 VM to VM I get about 2 MB/s.   The 2003 server has the latest integration services installed).

I have only IPV4 enabled.  We are not using IPV6 so it is disabled.

The server that they are on has VERY fast arrays (two RAID 50 - different controllers).  If I copy from one array to another I can see about 500 plus MB/s

Adding vCPUs to guest OS

We have installed a Windows 2008R2 server onto a 2012 HyperV host however we only gave it 1 virtual CPU to access. Generally when I watch the two servers act/react as far as overall CPU usage is concerned they seem synchronous, the host appears to spread the guests work across 4 cores out of 8 available though the guest only sees one CPU.

My question is would adding a second vCPU via the HyperV console at host level reflect in the guest OS? Would the guest OS see more CPU instances? Become multi-threaded? Is adding more vCPUs to the guest OS going to add anything tangible to it?

Hyper-V 2012 and Processor Compatability

Hi,

Im in the process of designing a Hyper-V 2012 cluster setup.

We just got our new SAN and the plan is that the new cluster will use SMB3 storage and we will use live migration. 2 new hosts will be ordered for the cluster. But we also have several resently bought hosts all with 2 six core cpus and lots of ram and i would like to include these in the new cluster setup. For live migration to function i will have to enable processor compatability.

My question is, how will this impact the performance on the hosts? i know how the feature works and i know how it will limit the features on cpu's on the newest hosts, im just trying to find some numbers/stats on how this can/will impact performance.

Hi,

I have 2 Windows Server R2 machine, both of them have Hyper-V with them.
The Hyper-V running on Server A is Win2003 as an Active Directory DC.
I save and export the Server A's Hyper-V to Server B.  I can import the virtual machine from the exported foloder, but somehow, the AD is not working smoothly.
How do I fix this problem?  Thanks for help.

Hyper-V role failes to install on Win2k8 with odd AMD Messages on Intel HW

Hello,

I'm trying to install the Hyper-V role on my Win2k8 SP2 x64 server (Proliant ML350 G5).  This server is running an Intel CPU and has the proper BIOS settings...  The install attempts to install/reboot 3 times, then tells me installation of the role has failed and won't be tried further.

In the event log, I see TONS of messages like the samples below in my System event log referencing AMD64 which seems odd considering i'm running an INTEL CPU... I'm at my wits end and looking for direction!

Hyper-V 2012: Replication fails to automatically resume after a server reboot

$

Hello,

I have a VM lab with Windows 2012 and Hyper-V. Overall it has been awesome, but I have one small glitch:

The VMs on server A replicate to server B. The new Hyper-V replication feature works perfectly, except for my one problem. When I shut down and then restart the servers, replication does not always automatically resume for all VMs. Some VMs will resume replication on their own and some will require a manual resume - and it seems to be random. I can always restart replication by right clicking and the hitting Replication --> Resume Replication, but I rather hoped that this would happen automatically, all of the time.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a cure?

VM-w2k8 Datacenter crash after restart

Hello everyone.

I have problem with one of my vm machine hosted on Hyper-V.

Guest system is Server 2008 r2 Datacenter.

When I restart machine its shutingdown without problem. Next its starting i see progres bar for loading system and then machine crash without BDOS or creating dump file. It looks like machine is turned off down by hypervisor ...

I have find event like below on my hypervisor but it dosen't say to much.

event id 1069 cluster resource %name in clustered service or application %name failed.

There no more event and im sure that resourec are accesible.

Have someone have any sugestion how to resolve this problem.

Ps. Both host and guest machine are fully updated.

Best regards and thanks for advices.

Guest VM failover cluster on Hyper-V 2012 Cluster does not work across hosts

$

Hi all,

We are evaluating Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012, and I have bumped in to this problem:
I have a Exchange 2010SP2 DAG installed on 2 vms in our Hyper-V cluster (a DAG forms a failover cluster, but does not use any shared storage). As long as my vms are on the same host, all is good. However, if I live migrate or shutdown-->move-->start one of the guest nodes on another pysical host, it loses connectivity with the cluster. "regular" network is fine across hosts, and I can ping/browse one guest node from the other. I have tried looking for guidance for Exchange on Hyper-V clusters but have not been able to find anything.

According to the Exchange documentation this configuration is supported, so I guess I'm asking for any tips and pointers on where to troubleshoot this.

regards,

Trond

Copy or Cut (and paste) to a Virtual Machine...

Hello!

im nu here and im nu to the use of Hyper-V so please be tolerant :P

The problem is that I can't copy and paste or cut and paste files or directories from desktop (or other locations ) to an opened virtual machine's window, even dragging the object with the mouse, the pointer become the prohibited icon.

So how can I activate this function (if it is possible)?

Migrate VMware guest with RDM to Hyper-V 2012 using SCVMM

$

Hi,

IS it possible to do a migration of a VMware guest that has several disks attached as RDM's using SCVMM V2V?

I have added in the ESXi Server to SCVMM already and Host is set to OK

OR, is it a case of having to do a COLD Migration (SvMotion) on the vmware guest and have vmware convert the RDM's to vmdks first and then use SCVMM to migrate the 6 disks

Thanks

Multiple AVHD's, some older than parent.. need to merge? or safe to delete?

Hi,

I have a parent VHD and 3 children, the 1 AVHD file is current and working 100%, the other 2 AVHD files are exactly the same age and older than the parent respectively. I am very quickly running out of physical drive space and need to know if it is safe to delete the 2 AVHD's that aren't in use... I would attempt to merge them, however I understand that in order to merge the child files need to be newer than the parent. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Please see below:

Parent.VHD5/29/201358GB

Child.AVHD7/19/20131TB (Current)

Child.AVHD5/29/2013700GB

Child.AVHD10/8/2012370GB

Thank you.

Warning: Copy a large amount of data

During complicated installation processes, it might be temporarly interesting, to take snapshots at important milestone points. But it is important to remove the snapshots when the configuration is terminated. Normally such tasks do not give any problems. But there are some exceptions in this kind of scenarios. Imagine you have fixed vhdx disks, that means that usually the diskspace consumption will not grow. But if you hadn't much diskspace left after creating the fixed virtual disks, you need to be very carefull. If you think to copy a large amount of data to a VM where you might have taken an initial snapshot (only during configuration time) it is important to know, that all your data won't be copied to the fixed vhdx disk, but rather to a avhdx file. So the data will be copied and your diskspace will decrease. When the physical disk is full, while the copy-process is still running, the VM will be saved. In such a scenario the VM will only be saved at the point, when you have approximately 30 MB of free space left on your phisical disk. The only way to go ahead is to immediately shut down your VM and to delete all snapshots. Depending on the amount of data which was already been copied, the main consuption of your important workingtime might just begin now: The merging-process is not just a simple copy-process. Even if you have only copied for example 150 GB of data (including large and little files), the merging time may take about 6 hours. If you wheren't able to delete any unused and large files on this disk before deleting the snapshots, the merge process runs at the low free physical disk space of about 30 MB.
This situation can become reality just if you have forgotten to delete the snapshots prior to copy large amounts of data to a virtual disk. For this reason Microsoft should think about a mechanism within Hyper-V to avoid such a troubleshouting process. It is a fact, that everyone can take snapshots with just one click, without knowing anything of how the command works.

Migrate 2008 R2 Clustered VMs to 2012

Hi all.

I have 2 node Windows Sever 2008 R2 cluster. Hosts are connected by FC adaptors to netapp SAN. I need to migrate all VM's to Windows Server 2012 Cluster. I do not have other hardware therefore I'm planning to use one of the cluster member to build first 2012. Here is my plan, I would be appreciated if you could confirm or add your suggestions.

-Live or Quick migrate all VM resources to 2008R2 HyperV2 Server from HyperV1 Server.

- Remove HyperV1 from cluster, remove CSVs (not sure how to do that exactly)

 - Install Windows Server 2012 R2 and cluster to the HyperV1 server.

- Configure same networks.

- Take a maintenance window for VMs. Shut down all on legacy cluster.

- Remove LUNs from legacy and add them to new cluster with same settings (not sure if that step true. Is that easy like that, my storage guys will remove from 2008 and add them to 2012 and da dam! I will see all my VMs?)

- If I see all my VM's on my new server then will import them using Hyper-V Manager. This will reduce import time as well i guess.

Any action with CSVs?

Are these steps seem ok? I know i can use cluster migration as well but my storage knowledge is so less and storage guys know hothing about CSV or Hyper-V. So i'm trying to find easiest path?

I would be appricated if somebody correct me or add more detailed steps.

Thanks in advance.

Hyper-V replica saved state

Hello,

Quick question regarding replication; when a VM is replicated, is it supposed to be off or in a saved state? In my POC it was always off, however I did read some documentation that said it was in a saved state (I of course cannot locate it now).

If it is indeed supposed to be off, is there any chance of being able to use saved states in the future?

monitoring performance with hyper-v

Hi,

I have read up a bit on bottle necks for virtualisation and one of the main areas that I seem to need to keep an eye on is the disk queue length, furthermore I have read that I should be aiming to keep this below 2 per disk, so my RAID 5 has 3 disks so im guessing I need to keep the disk queue length below 6, firstly have I got this right?

secondly, is the disk queue length reported by the resource monitor on the hyper-v host itself accurate, does it give me the disk queue length for the real disks underneath or is it giving me false readings like the CPU  does (I know not to trust the CPU reading on the hyper-v host).

what other disk related counters should I be monitoring more importantly what are the recommended thresholds (I find it difficult to nail down some real figures on these counters)

Thanks

Steve

Synthetic FibreChannel Port: Failed to start reserving resources with Error 'Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.' (0x800705AA)

Hello Gurus

i have installed windows server 2012 RTM with Hyper-V. i already created virtual machine with virtual fiber channel adapter connected to physical one. sometimes when i restart the virtual machine it gets failed to start again and the following error appears in the event viewer of the host:

error id 21502
'Virtual Machine xyz' failed to start.

'xyz' failed to start. (Virtual machine ID number)

'xyz' Synthetic FibreChannel Port: Failed to start reserving resources with Error 'Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.' (0x800705AA). (Virtual machine IDnumber)

'xyz': Operation for virtual port (C003FF18F98C000E) failed with an error: No physical port available to satisfy the request (Virtual machine IDnumber).

error id 1069
Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine xyz' of type 'Virtual Machine' in clustered role 'xyz' failed. The error code was '0x5aa' ('Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.').

Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

appreciate your help
