Using Failover Cluster Management with Hyper-V Server 2008 R2

$

My company has a 4-node cluster setup using Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 (the free version based on core).  From one of the domain controllers that the clustered machines are part of (which is running Windows Server 2008 Standard without Hyper-V) I am able to bring up MMC and add the Failover Cluster Management snap-in without issue.  However, when I click "Manage a Cluster" and input the cluster name, I get the following message...

The action 'Manage a Cluster...' did not complete.  An error occurred trying to display the cluster information.  This version of Failover Cluster Management does not support connections to the Failover Clustering version on the target cluster.

So my question is, is there any way for me to use the GUI Failover Cluster Management software to manage the cluster?  I am relatively new to this and inherited this from someone who is now gone.  Any assitance or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Hyper-V Not Recognizing SCSI Drive

Hello,

I am trying to add a SCSI Drive to a Windows Server 2008 R2 VM and the VM is not recognizing it. The host machine is Windows Server 2008 R2 as well.

  • The drive does not show up in Explorer or under Disk Management.
  • While looking under Device Manager the drive shows under "Other".
    • Under other it shows the HD name then "SCSI Disk Device"
    • Under properties of the drive the driver is "Unknown".
  • If I go to "Devices and Printers"  it shows under the "Unspecified" category but I cannot open it. I can only view the properties.
  • In the settings of the VM under "Integration Services" there is no SCSI option
  • I have ran the "Integration Services Setup"

As you can see I have tried a number of suggestions I have seen on this forum and others but with no luck. If anyone could help me see what I am missing it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

Sean

Hyper-V Guests randomly "freezing"

I have a Hyper-V server running on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Core

  • i5 Intel Quad Core
  • 32GB Ram
  • 2TGB Hard Drive
  • 6 x 2008 R2 SP1 Guests
  • 1 x WS12 Guest
  • 1 x Centos 6.4 Guest

Total RAM used for Vms = 20GB

Over the last few days I have had some trouble where I've been unable to access the VMs either by RDP, RPC connections (services / event viewer, etc) or any websites they are running (Apache / SharePoint)

I can connect to the physical host via keyboard & mouse, but not via RDP

All servers (host & guests) are responding to PING only - nothing else

I canot cleanly shutdown the host - i have to hold the power button in (after 30 mins of "Shutting down")

When the host and guests reboot there is a gap in all the guest event logs (tonight from 15:30 GMT+1) until 20:30 when I rebooted - not one single event logged during that time..

The only thing I can think of is that the VMs are effectively going into a Paused state - but showing as "running" (this is in Core Configurator 2.0 as I'm running Server Core for the Host OS)

Does anyone know of any reason why this would start happening?

I've made no changes except updates to the VMs (June 2013's patching hasn't been applied as I've lost SCCM due to one of the crashes)

I have two Windows2012 server(serverA,serverB) and installed Hyper-V.

I tried Hyper-V replica replication from serverA to serverB.

One guest Windows2008R2 of serverA is replicated and still working fine.

But the other Windows2008R2 guest of serverA can not be replicated.

When I tried to replicate , I had failed to enable replication with 0x80004004 error like the below.

I tried solution 1 and 2 of the below link but same error still happen.

How could I solve it ?

what application/server could be converted to virtual

Hello,

We have many servers(ISA, Exchange, SQL server, Oracle, SCCM, File servers, DC, Printer server, Radios, DHCP,...) running on physical server, my boss want to use

virtualization and wants to know what servers could be hosted on a virtual server. My question is what are factors that I should use to decide which server could be converted to virtual?

Many thanks

Hyper-V Replica "Test failover" command produces Windows activation in the VM

$

Today I tested the Replica option in hyper-v, I created a "test failover" of my replicated VM, upon booting this virtual machine it seems that a new hardware signature is created? the virtual machine is an old legacy server running windows 2003 std and is fully activated in the primary host from witch it was replicated from, I am a little surprised that the replica feature of server 2012 hyper-v does not seem to replicate the hardware signature? is this normal and the intended functionality ?

Also I found that after I clicked "stop failover test" hyper-v then performed a "Merge in progress" I am a little confused why it would try to merge changes made in the test failover back to the original replicated VM ? after all its just a test and I would think sending back any changes made to the test VM back to the primary replicated VM defeats the whole purpose of a test yes? to my own way of thinking I want the primary replicated VM to remain totally isolated from the test failover VM.

This also raises another question, if this test failover "merge in progress" command does in fact send back the changes made in the test failover VM back to the original replicated VM then would this not then create a difference in the structures between  the top level production VM from which the replicated VM is receiving its updates from? I would think that this would then no longer create a cloned VM but rather a semi clone with changes merged into the replicated VM from the Test failover VM ?

Thanks

Hyper-V Replica Stuck on Merge in Progress - No Percentage

Running Windows Hyper-V Server 2012 core on two machines.  Attempting for the first time to backup one VM from each Hyper-V Server to the other.

HV1 has a 1.5 Tb fixed VHDX that was approximately 1/4 used.  I initially attempted to start replication from HV1 to HV2 across the WAN, but realized that was going to take too long.  So I put HV1 and HV2 on the same LAN and restarted replication.

I also tried to replicate from HV2 to HV1 a 4 Tb fixed VHDX.  There was about 1.5 Tb used of the 4 Tb VHDX.

The VMs on both Hyper-V Servers have been shut down.  The files look like they copied from one Hyper-V Server to the other, but my HV1 has been showing "Merge in Progress" for over a week.  HV2 seems to have completed whatever it needed to do within 1-2 days.  There is an AVHDX file on HV1, but it is not obvious to me that is changing in size at all (either growing larger or smaller - as I assume should occur as part of the merge).

On HV1 the status shows "Merge in Progress" with several periods, which cycle between 1 and 5, but there is no other progress indicator.  I was expecting something to say X% completed?  It looks like something is going on.  The HDD indicator is on and I can hear a lot of disk activity on HV1.

I have tried rebooting HV1 twice to see if something was stuck, but that didn't seem to make any difference.  Shortly after the reboot both VMs on HV1 were back to "Merge in Progress" status.

When I look at the DIR output on either Hyper-V Server I see some slight changes in the amount of the HDD used, but not nearly as much as I would think given the amount of disk activity.

Given both Hyper-V Servers are on the same LAN right now my intention was to wait for the merge to complete before returning HV1 to its home and restarting replication across the WAN.

But this has been running for over a week.  Copying the whole VHDX shouldn't take more than a few hours, so I don't understand why a merge is taking so long.

Any ideas as to why this doesn't seem to be making any progress?

P.S.  Both Hyper-V Servers have a RAID hardware controller.  HV1 is running RAID5.  HV2 has a better controller and is running RAID6.

Hyper-V Replica Certificate Error

Hi,

Today I wanted to install Hyper-V Replica using self-signed certificates.

I followed a tutorial which has worked two times before.

This time I received an error:

Additional info:

  • Hostname: ws-dr.ws-dr.local
  • Certificate is created with CN=ws-dr.ws-dr.local. I can also ping from my other VM to the IP-address and FQDN.
  • The certificate is created and used on the Replication Server.

I re-installed the machine several times, but the problem still appears.

Google only shows a few hits and is not showing any possible solutions. Maybe someone on this forum knows how to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance!

ps, the tutorial I followed can be found here: http://jsmcomputers.biz/wp/?p=360

Problem with backup and hyper-v on server 2012 - Guest hanging then stopping backup causes hyper-v manager to hang

Hi,

We have a deployment of 3 x Server 2012 Physical Hosts, each Physical host is running 2 VM's (variety of guest OS 2003, 2008, 2012) and hyper-v replica is enabled on all of the guests.

One of the guests is a 2012 server standard which is being used as a file server and is hosting around 2.5TB of data. With both a 3rd party backup software and WSB backing up to an external USB drive (4TB) the backup gets to just over 1.3TB of data backed up then users complain they are unable to access files on the file server.

We had been running the 3rd party software on all guests with no issues, but the backups are scheduled to run out of hours. Obviously with the amount of data on the file server we expected it to over-run but also hoped that while the backup was running the server should also have been operational! We decided last night to use WSB to see if it was the 3rd party software that was the cause and have found out it isn't!

Just to provide a bit more info, the Servers have plenty of CPU and RAM available for the host and guest. The Host OS runs off 2 x SATA drives in RAID-1 and this particular guest runs off 4 x SATA drives in RAID 10.

While WSB was in progress (at the time of checking when users were complaining) the state of the VM was shown as 'running-critical'. When we stopped the backup it did so quite quickly but the hyper-v manager stopped showing any data on the guests, we were then forced to reboot the host, which also hung on shutdown causing us to have to hard power-cycle the unit.

All the other hosts are fine, and operation of this host is fine, also backup of any of the other guests on this host cause no problems, other than the fact they are small enough to complete their backups out of hours. But surely with VSS backing up during the day shouldnt be a problem (we use WSB to backup physical servers during the day at other sites with no issue)

It now means we only have a full backup of their main file server from the weekend, and its now looking like we will only be able to run another backup this weekend. Obviously there is the replica to go to in the event of a failover, but we need this problem sorting urgently, any help here would be greatly appreciated!

Guest VM failover cluster on Hyper-V 2012 Cluster does not work across hosts

$

Hi all,

We are evaluating Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012, and I have bumped in to this problem:
I have a Exchange 2010SP2 DAG installed on 2 vms in our Hyper-V cluster (a DAG forms a failover cluster, but does not use any shared storage). As long as my vms are on the same host, all is good. However, if I live migrate or shutdown-->move-->start one of the guest nodes on another pysical host, it loses connectivity with the cluster. "regular" network is fine across hosts, and I can ping/browse one guest node from the other. I have tried looking for guidance for Exchange on Hyper-V clusters but have not been able to find anything.

According to the Exchange documentation this configuration is supported, so I guess I'm asking for any tips and pointers on where to troubleshoot this.

regards,

Trond

Hyper-V in windows server 2012 standard

Hi all,

Kindly how many virtual machine I can have on a Windows Server 2012 Standard Hyper-V host server

What?!?! Hyper V worked in 2008 R2 but not in 2012?!?! Incorrect function.

I have a new server 2012 upgrade (yes, I did upgrade from 2008 R2 to 2012 - it DOES work) and I'm banging my head on the wall because of this darned Hyper-V.

Hyper-V worked just fine in 2008 R2, but after the upgrade it not only made me reinstall the role and I lost my VMs, but after importing them none of them will start. I get an "Incorrect Function" message, and thru some digging it made me think that my hardware (Intel S3000AHLX motherboard with a Core 2 Extreme QX6700 @ 2.66 GHz) was to fault, but (1) it worked before dangit, and (2) Intel's site confirms that both support VT. I even double-checked in the BIOS that it's still turned on.

I thought it might be my VMs after having to reimport, even went as far as to recreate them with the same VHDs. I even tried to create a new one. Same "Incorrect Function" message.

I checked in the VMMS event log, and its throwing error message %%2147942401 and error code 0x80070001.

Again - it worked before the upgrade!!

Audio Output in VMs?

$

I saw some posts via search from 2008 regarding no audio support in Hyper-V VMs, but it's 2013.  Has there been any way to enable the audio in my VM servers so I can have the audio playing on them filter out through the hardware's soundcard?  Not to be confused with the RDP method... which is awful by the way.

HDD space required to perform Manual merge of .avhd to .vhd

Hello,

I would like to manually merge avhd to .vhd. Do I have enough free space on HDD to perform this operation? Also, is there a good Tech note on doing a manula merge?

Free space on Disk= 71.GB

.vhd file = 71 GB

.avhd = 70 GB

Thanks!

Does Hyper V in Server 2012 support SATA-III speeds?

Hi folks.  I was wondering whether or not Hyper V in server 2012 supports sata3 speeds or not.  If so, does it have to be passthrough?  Curious.  Thanks.
