Extremely weird Host OS issue, Pinging it returns "Host not Found", but NSLookup works

$

I"m having an issue related to DNS (hostnames) and my Hyper-V 2012 host, and I hope you all can help.  I have a local network and every machine can ping the other just fine using IP Address.

However, none of my 'client' machines can PING my Hyper-V host (running Hyper-V 2012 Core) by hostname. It almost always returns "host not found".  When I use NSLookup {Hyper-V hostname}, it correctly returns back the correct result. It's strictly Ping that is not working.

I'm going to detail my exact setup to help better troubleshoot this:

Wireless Router:
Netgear WNDR3700 router (v4)
DHCP Enabled, DNSMasq Enabled
Has Static entry for Machine 4 (below)

Machine 1:
Win8 Pro Desktop
Connected to Domain
Attached to Router: Wired
Dynamic IP address
DNS: gets DNS from Machine 4

Machine 2:
Windows 8 Pro (Surface Pro)
Connected to Workgroup (not Domain as Machine 1 is)
Attached to Router: Wireless
Dynamic IP address
DNS: Dynamic (i.e., Router)

Machine 3:
Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V (Core)
Connected to Workgroup
Attached to Router: Wired
Dynamic IP address
DNS: Dynamic (i.e., Router)

I have Enabled 'Reachable by Ping' in the command-line GUI

Machine 4:
**Virtual Machine**: Windows Server Essentials 2012
This machine is a Domain Controller (Machine 1 is a member of this Domain)
This is a Guest VM of Machine 3 (i.e., Machine 3 is hosting this VM)
Static IP address
Attached to Router: Wired (via Host OS).. this VM has an "external" network adapter that I specified so it can communicate with other physical machines on the local network
DNS: Set to itself (127.0.0.1)

The #1 issue I am having is that Machine 3 (the Hyper-V HOST) can PING ALL the other machines successfully, but NONE of the other machines (Machine 1, 2, or 4) can PING Machine 3 (the Hyper-V HOST).

Sometimes, very rarely, all of a sudden, Machine 3 is successfully pingable by the other 3 machines (For example, Ping keeps giving host not found, but all of a sudden it starts working), but usually after 15-20 minutes, it stops working again.

Since Machine 1 is connected via Domain to Machine 4, and since Machine 4 is a Domain Controller, Machine 1's DNS is pointing to Machine 4. Machine 1 has no problems pinging all other machines besides Machine 3.

Regarding Machine 2 (Surface Pro), for the most part it works good, however, sometimes it has trouble pinging Machine 1. Though it's a minor quirk and I blame that mostly on the Wifi adapter in the Surface Pro to being junky.

What's really crazy is that the Guest OS (Machine 4) of the Hyper-V host can NOT Ping it's Host OS by hostname.

I am completely baffled.  This is definitely a DNS issue but since it is isolated to the Hyper-V 2012 host, I thought it may be something with Hyper-V.

I would greatly appreciate any help you all can provide.  I was up until 4am last night trying resolve this, and I am all out of ideas.

Thanks in advance.

Problem configuring Windows 7 Client for Hyper-V Management server.

Hello,

I have successfully configured other Window 7 Workstations for Remote Management of Hyper-V following the steps in this article:

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2010/11/11/configuring-remote-management-of-hyper-v-server-in-a-workgroup.aspx

This explains how to setup Hyper-V Manager when your server is not part of a domain.  However, I am having problems with one of my pc's.  After successfully executing winrm quickconfig I have the following problem executing the following command:

      winrm set winrm/config/client @{TrustedHosts="rlpserver"}

it comes back with the error:  Error: Invalid URI - cannot locate last token for root node name

rlpserver is a Windows 2008 R2 CORE Server that is running Hyper-V.  The server side has been successfully configured for Remote Management as I am able to manage Hyper-V from other devices.  I am able to successfully ping rlpserver.

Any assistance to resolve this problem will be greatly appreciated.

Server 2012 / Hyper-V 3.0 Replica and SQL Server

Seeing a lot of conflicting answers in the forums about whether or not SQL Server on Hyper-V Replica is supported (Yes it is, no it isn't, yes it is under certain conditions, etc). Everything seems to point back to this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956893. In that article, it states:

"SQL Server on Hyper-V Replica is supported provided theEnableWriteOrderPreservationAcrossDisks flag is set."

It also mentions that certain high-availability features within SQL must also be disabled. Will someone with definitive knowledge weigh in on whether or not this is accurate and if in fact SQL Server is supported under these circumstances?

Regarding the "EnableWriteOrderPreservationAcrossDisks" flag, the documentation states that it:

"Determines whether all virtual hard disks selected for replication are replicated to the same point in time. This is useful if the virtual machine runs an application that saves data across virtual hard disks (for example, one virtual hard disk dedicated for application data, and another virtual hard disk dedicated for application log files)."

My question here is, if our database and log files are stored in the same vhd, is it still necessary to set this flag? The KB article above states that the flag needs to be set, but doesn't say what it should be set to (True or False?). Would we need to set the flag to "False" if our database and log files are stored in a single vhd? Or does the flag need to be set to "True" in order to be supported, even if our database and log files reside in a single vhd?

Finally, during the MVA Live Q&A this week on Microsoft Virtualization, Jeff Woolsey made the comment that if you need application-consistent copies in your Hyper-V replica VM, you should enable the "Replicate incremental VSS copy" option when enabling Hyper-V replica. But it looks like the minimum amount of time you can set this option to is 1 hour. I'm confused on how this relates to the 5 minute default interval that Hyper-V replica uses. If I set it to replicate incremental VSS copy every 1 hour, is my replica only good every hour? Or is it still good every 5 minutes?

VHD file smaller than used disk space on guest operating system.

Hello,

While trying to make space on my Virtual Machine I noticed that the virtual hard disk file is actually smaller than what the guest operating system reports as being in use. The VHD file is 35GB whereas when I connect to the virtual machine the guest reports that 39GB is in use. How can this be? Also, the VHD is dynamically expanding if that makes any difference.

Server 2012 - Hyper-V-Cluster - Shared SAS - StorageSpaces

Hi,

I want to configure a Hyper-V-Cluster with Server2012. For storage I want to have a combination of Shared SAS  (JBOD with dual expander + HBA) and the new StorageSpaces-Feature.

In this szenario I have to configure the StorageSpaces as CSV to make shure that all the Cluster-Nodes have access to the storage ("clustered storagespaces"), correct?

Now I read that thin-provisioning and parity-spaces are not supported in such a clustered environment. So I lose two important features. Is that correct, too??

High Availability with Hyper-V Network Virtualization Gateway

$

Hello,

I am considering building a hybrid cloud model for an IaaS offering.  One of the issues I have not yet resolved is how to provide a high availability solution for the Hyper-V Network Virtualization Gateway devices.

It appears the release of dedicated devices have been slow to come to market (I am aware F5 and other have announced devices, but none have arrived to the market as of yet) and the integration of NVGRE into existing network equipment has not happened.  As such, I am looking at using server hardware and Windows Server 2012 to act as my network virtualization gateway.

Having said that, I have found almost no information on how I can use Windows Server 2012 to put together a redundant and highly available solution.  It was briefly touched upon in this article:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj618319.aspx

Multiple Gateways

High Availability by using multiple physical Hyper-V Network Virtualization gateways is outside the scope of this article. The datacenter orchestrator (for example VMM) will need to configure and manage the gateway. Scenarios in which the datacenter deploys multiple gateways include scalability and resiliency. For scalability a single physical gateway may not be able to handle the load required for a datacenter. Additionally a single gateway introduces a single point of failure. The partner’s management console should handle deployments consisting of multiple gateways.

And that basically says that it is outside the scope of the article.  So the question is:  can multiple Windows Server 2012 servers be configured to act as a network virtualization gateway?   If so, would all clients be multi-honed for the two gateways, or is there some way of clustering them (using existing technologies) to provide a single address to act as a gateway?  How would these gateways be managed/replicated?  Does SC VMM SP1 have the ability to manage multiple network virtualization gateways?

Thank you.

Backup a VM: Shutdown, Save State or Export/Import

We have a cluster with some Hyper-V VMs and also a standalone Hyper-V server. All machines run Windows 2008 (not R2). On the standalone machine I'm thinking the best thing to do is use/copy/make a Powershell script to shut down or save or export VMs and then copy VM related files to our NAS.

Any difference restore wise if the VM is shut down vs saved before backup? I'm thinking you have to back up the bin and the vsv (more space needed) if you go the saved state route. I'm intrigued by the export/import route because if I understand it correctly in a restore/import situation I won't have to manually recreate the VM. If I don't export/import I'll have to keep track of the configuration of the VMs and recreate manually. Not a big deal but something more to worry about in a disaster scenario. The one concern about export/import is the restriction on one time import. But I'm thinking that's not a big deal as the only time you use the import is in that disaster scenario. And as soon as you export the restored VM you have an available import again.

Hyper-V promiscuous mode ?

After reading many posts, I am more confused than before.

I would know if Hyper-V (Win 2008 R2 or Win 2012) support or less "promiscuous mode".
In fact I would use a sniffer and monitoring VM inside Hyper-V, to monitor LAN trafic.
I have a dedicated nic of the server connected with a mirror port of a Cisco switch.
The same configuration run correctly with ESX 5.1, but not with Hyper-V.
I have seen posts where someone says that Hypr-V can support promiscuous mode and other that cannot.
Someone could tell me if it is possible and suggest me a document to follow?
Thanks in advance

Hi everyone,

Can anybody tell me in windows server 2012 hyper-v how to map a Physical NIC(pnic) to a virtual NIC(vnic) , is there any way or powershell commands to find this? If i have 3 nic adapter and 3 virtual machine on my windows hyper-V , so can i determine which vnic is connected to which pnic , can the determine the traffic route? if yes the how can , please tell me as soon as possible , thanks

How to capture a .VHD file so I can use it as a .WIM for imaging

$

Hi All,

What I've basically done is created and configured a Windows 7x64 image (in hyper V) to my liking and now I would like to capture it and retrieve a .Wim file. With that wim file I'd then like to import it into MDT and then just use that as a base image and inject drivers as necessary for whichever hardware platform we need by using a task sequence. ( I know this probably isn't the best way to do it, but it's just a starting point for me)

My original thinking (keep in mind I have little exp with VM's) was that I could just configure this image, then boot that VM to GImageX and sysprep and capture the image and retrieve a .WIM file to use for MDT. Now either this is not possible, or I'm just not doing it correctly. That I do not know. Please help as best you can! Take into consideration that I'm new to this :-)

Any help would be much appreciated! I'm just trying to learn this stuff, and yes I've searched for hours on how to configure MDT and setup an imaging process. I currently have a GImageX/Sysprep imaging environment, but clearly WDS/MDT/Hyper V are MUCH more useful if I can figure them out, that is.

Thanks!

Windows server 2012 standard and old licences mix

$

Hello,

I want to move 3 windows servers 2003 enterprise into a Windows server 2012 Standard with hyper-V.

I've called Microsoft and they said that with windows server 2012, I've only 2 VM instances and I must buy one more windows server 2012 standard license.

But I read on the microsoft website that if I buy a windows 2012 server, then I can install two 2 VM with windows 2012 server standard with free licensing, and in this case I can only use the physical server to manage hyper-v.

If I already have the licences for windows server 2003, I must only buy a windows server 2012 standard. isn't it?

Windows Server 2012 - Can occasionally not access second virtual hard drive inside a VM

$

I run Windows Server 2012 RTM Hyper-V and I can occasionally not access the second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) attached to the VM through the virtual SCSI controller. I can however access the first hard drive that is connected with the virtual IDE controller.

I get the following warning in the event log under “Administrative Events” every 30 seconds when this happens:

  • Log Name: System
  • Source: Storvsc
  • ID: Storvsc
  • Message: “Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.”

I get this error once or twice a week and it has caused serious problems since one of the virtual servers that have this problem is a fileserver and the second hard drive contains all the data.

The only quick solution to the problem that I have found is to force the virtual machine to stop using the “Turn Off” feature since a normal shut down does not work (stops at shutting down the event log or similar) and then start the virtual machine again.

You can also wait for about 30 minutes or longer until the disk for some reason becomes accessible again by itself.

My research into this problem shows that:

  • Only 2 of the 10 VMs running Windows Server 2012 RTM that I have, have this problem.
  • Both these VMs have a second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) that cannot be accessed for 30 minutes or longer.
  • Check Disk of the virtual hard drive shows no errors.
  • The second hard drive is attached to the virtual SCSI controller.
  • I can find no problems at all with the physical storage on the (not related) 4 hosts that I have. The problem exists only in the VMs.

I have now attached the second virtual hard drive to the virtual IDE controller to see if this permanently fixes this problem (i.e. does not happen for at least a week).

Is there something wrong with the virtual SCSI controller or the virtual SCSI device driver that comes with Windows Server 2012 RTM? Does anyone else have this problem?

NIC without management(for VMs only) not listed in IPCONFIG. Need to find MAC

Hi,

I need to find MAC of the NIC dedicated to VMs network. Need it for vLan configuration. Regardless of the purpose... I cannot find MAC. See attached pic.

In IPCONFIG the NIC Ethernet 2 that is VMs NIC doesn't listed. Yes it became virtual switch. But why it is not in IPCONFIG.

My VMWARE guy is laughing... we always do jokes... But seriously, were to find the parameteres of phisical card?

VM get IP from DHCP server but not external network access

$

Hello,

This question might sound a classic one as many can be found on this forum with problem accessing external networks (ex internet), but with all efforts I could not find a solution.

Hyper-V server on Windows Server 2008 R2 (fully updated) setup:

Member of the domain, internal IP received from authorized DHCP. Server is able to access internal and external networks. One vNIC created and bound to the server's unique NIC, set as external and allowing maangement OS share. The physical adapter is set to "Microsoft virtual Network Switch Protcol", the virtual adapter NIC got the IP settings. So far all its fine (Remote Management/RDP are setup)

- Hosting 2 VMs, able to boot and executing normally, both VMs networks are set to the vNIC (created previously). VMs are Windows Server 2008 R2 (fresh installed running no role/feature)

- Both VMs are able to get DHCP's IP, but are not able to communicate with anything else than the Host. Why ?

- The IPs got by the VMs are configured with the same subnet, dns and gateway as the Host. Network remain unidentified

I have setup multiple times the networks (Host, VMs, Hyper-V) and still it's not working.

I moved the VMs to another server on which I added the Hyper-V role but here too still nothing, no external network.

NB: Hyper-V is virtual machine hosted in ESXi v5.1

Let me know if someone knows how to fix or diagnostic that.

Thankxxx :-))

Use HBAs to both host and Virtual SANs

$

Hi,

Is it possible to use the same HBAs to present LUNs to the Host and the VMs (trough a Virtual SAN)?
When creating a new Virtual SAN, will the Host still be able to use the HBAs for existing SAN attached disks?

We already have a bunch of SAN storage connected to the hosts, but now we need the possibility to add a SAN disk directly to a clustered VM also.

Will there be any disconnect to existing LUNs when the Virtual SAN is configured?

Asking in advance so I don't disconnects the storage for the rest of the VMs. Would be a bad day at work...
