Virtual Switch (external) and Routing

$

I'm new to Hyper-V, so it will be difficult for me to describe the problem. But i'll try to :)

There's Server 2012 with 2 NICs: one looking to lan, another is connected to ADSL modem. RRAS is already configured on the server, with Remote Router interface (on-demand PPPoE connection). Everything works fine: lan clients have access to internet through the server. Now we are installing Hyper-V. To give access from VMs to lan and Internet we have to add External Virtual Switch over the NIC, which looks into lan, yes? But in that case client computers from local network do not have access to Internet.

Any ideas?

How do I shrink a VHD prior to converting to a VHDX

I'm doing a test run through of converting all of the servers to Server 2012 Hyper-V but I have one server that is giving me fits.  It's Windows 2008R2 with a huge "D" drive.  No one wants me to touch the current production server so reducing the size of the partition isn't an option.  My objective is to get the actual disk utilized by the fixed VHDX files to be reasonable.

My process (same for all of the servers):

1)  run disk2vhd with the Virtual PC option enabled to a USB drive and then copy this to the 2012 server - let's call it TEMP.VHD

2)  create a new VM and attach TEMP.VHD and the VM name is TEMP

3)  start TEMP, use disk management, shrink to 500GB, shutdown, delete the TEMP VM

4)  run VHDresizer from TEMP to a new name TEMP_SMALLER and shrink from 858GB to 350GB {this takes a long time but runs fine}

5)  in Hyper-V convert TEMP_SMALLER to a VHDX named DEV-XX {it's a software development house so all the VHDX files are fixed size}

6)  create a new VM and attach DEV-XX

7)  get a BSOD with 0x0000007B

So what's a better procedure / where did I error / etc.?

Create a virtual network

Hello

I want to create a virtual network in order to practice for my MCSA.  I have not had much experience of setting up an using Hyper-V 2012, but am a quick learner.  I have set up Hyper-V server and can RDP to the Server and connect using Windows 8 Hyper-V Manager (am having some difficulty connecting to the Firewall using mmc, but will deal with that later).

Is there a quick how-to on creating a virtual network that can access the Internet so I can active my TechNet Licenses and download updates?

Thanks
Tony

"Turn Off" VM

Hi,

One of the guest VMs was rebooted not gracefully this afternoon. Can't see anything obvious from the log of that VM, neither from the Host, practically nothing other than saying it was rebooted unexpectedly (kernel-power, critical etc).

I can only assume it got "turned off" at the Host level, does anyone know how to find out who or what initiates "Turn Off" or Shutdown" action on a VM from the Hyper-v Host? I've been trying to find it everywhere in the Event log with no luck. Please help.

Thanks,

TM

We are using two Windows 2012 Hyper-v servers gui on iscsi. We have two servers connecting to the iscsi device it's a iomega ix4-200d nas. We have noticed that if on one server you make directory name change or a file name change it doesn't reflect that change on the other server... How can we fix this?

Thanks,

Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 Hot Add / Remove Storage - How?

$

Hi all,

I've recently upgraded our Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 machine to R2,
primarily to get the hot add/remove of storage that was a listed feature
(although I swear the virtual machines are running faster in R2, which is
great!).

Unfortunately, I can't seem to get the hot add/remove functionality working.
When I performed the upgrade, it was a clean install with exported and then
imported VMs.

When I choose "Settings..." on a running virtual machine, and select the
(preconfigured when the machine was off) SCSI Controller, I can't choose
"Add" a new hard drive. The message is "some settings cannot be modified
because the virtual machine was running" as was the case in R1.

I've installed the R2 integration tools onto the guest OS, which is Windows
SBS 2008.  Do I need an updated version of the Hyper-V Management Tools for Windows Vista?  Is there a Hyper-V Manager R2 that I'm missing?

I'm a bit stumped, to be honest, and I'm not sure whether I'm missing
something.

Any pointers will be greatly received. If there's any further information
that I can provide then just let me know.

Many thanks in advance,

Mark.

event id 28 vmsmp on 2008 r2, network connectivity unstable

Hi, I've look solutions on forums but did not solved my problem,

here is my warning

Port 'C7CE4397-920D-470F-9303-10E091CD7160' was prevented from using MAC address '00-15-5D-0A-E8-XX' because it is pinned to port 'A856FD70-B642-4C96-9310-CB35E220DDDE'.

I receive this message for all VMs on host

What I tried,

1. Delete virtual switch and recreate it

2. Update broadcom's drivers

3. Undo team set to stand alone card, still had the warnings, recreated a new team

4. Switch to static mac on all vms

5. Change manually mac on vms, and make sure none of the vms use the same mac

note : there is no other hyper-v server in domain or network

The system have been working for over a year with out this warning, nothing have been change in configuration regarding hyper-v or vms or nics.  Warnings just appear suddently.

File server and exchange server both have the same warning and dont seems to be affected in any way visible to the users. But another server with Pervasive SQL constently drop connection to users since this warning appeared. Pervasive support confirms the btrieve error is from networks connectivity issue. I dont see any other errors in event log execpt this warning and i get about 1400 per hour.

I have no clue what to try next for solving this issues, the pervasive sql database is critical to the users and need to be stable again.

thank you for you help

Auto add / remove physical Disk from Hyper-V VMs

Hi Folks,

I am looking for a script to automatically add a physical disk from my hyper-v host to a guest operating system. As soon as the task is completed. I would like to remove the disk. The auto addition should select the available disk-controller on the guest OS and add automatically.

Host will be connected to a disk shelf and any new disk added to the disk shelf should be automatically mounted inside the hyper-v guest by selecting the available ide / scsi controller. As max you can connect 256 disk on a guest vm in hyper-v

I am fairly new to the scripting, any points would be appreciated.

How to reset vss on Hyper-V without rebooting

$

Hi. I have a Hyper-V server, using a third party backup software to back up the VMs. I often get VSS errors, causing my backup to fail. The only way I have found to cure the error is to reboot the server. Is there a way to reset the vss writers without rebooting the server?

Here is a typical example of the error, although the State and Last Error can vary:

Writer name: 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer'
   Writer Id: {66841cd4-6ded-4f4b-8f17-fd23f8ddc3de}
   Writer Instance Id: {2207c582-3053-4714-b6e7-bd0212aaf3c2}
   State: [5] Waiting for completion
   Last error: Unexpected error

Thanks,
Dan

Hyper V 2012 Backup - best practice

I'm setting up a new Hyper-V server 2012 and I'm trying to understand how to best configure it for backups and restores usingWindows Server Backup. I´ve 5 VMs running, everyone has their one iScsi drive.

I would like to backup the VMs on a external usb disk. I´ve the choice to backup the Hyper-V using child partition snapshot or to backup the vm folder with the config and the vhd files (is is right, that Windows override the old backup ?)

What´s the difference between the two methods ?  Is incremental back possible with vm´s ?

thanks

Hyper-V does not work when I boot from a VHD image.

Hello;

I installed Windows 2012 on VHD drive for testing purposes. Hyper-V couldn’t start any VM I made. I installed the same configuration in a physical hard drive and then everything was OK. I repeated the same operation with Windows 8 on VHD and it did not work, on the other hand, again everything worked fine in a physical hard drive. I would like to be able to test Hyper-V with the operating system installed on a VHD image. Is it possible?

Thanks.

TB

This is the message I get when I boot from VHD drive :

An error occurred while attempting to start the selected virtual machine(s).

'New Virtual Machine' failed to start.

Virtual machine 'New Virtual Machine' could not be started because the hypervisor is not running.

'New Virtual Machine' failed to start. (Virtual machine ID 418D8E35-C4ED-4F66-8534-A5341F11FD21)

Virtual machine 'New Virtual Machine' could not be started because the hypervisor is not running (Virtual machine ID 418D8E35-C4ED-4F66-8534-A5341F11FD21).

The following actions may help you resolve the problem:

1) Verify that the processor of the physical computer has a supported version of hardware-assisted virtualization.

2) Verify that hardware-assisted virtualization and hardware-assisted data execution protection are enabled in the BIOS of the physical computer. (If you edit the BIOS to enable either setting, you must turn off the power to the physical computer and then turn it back on. Resetting the physical computer is not sufficient.)

3) If you have made changes to the Boot Configuration Data store, review these changes to ensure that the hypervisor is configured to launch automatically.

Hardware VSS

I have a DPM 2012 SP1 server backing up VMs from a 2008R2 host.  I have a Dell PS4100 SAN.  Latest HIT and Microsoft ISCI client 3.3 on the host.

Backups fail and i get:

Starting synchronization on \Backup Using Child Partition Snapshot\server failed:
Error 30290: Failure occurred while adding one or more of the volumes involved in backup operation to snapshot set. Please check the event log on Hxxx.yyy.zzz  to troubleshoot the issue.
Error details: Internal error code: 0x809909E2
Recommended action: Check recent records from the VolSnap source in the Application Event Log to find out why the problem occurred.

I can force them to use software VSS and i ca get a backup.  I found this KB

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2761897

Option Two:

One the Hyper-V server(s) involved, remove the iSCSI Target Storage Provider (VSD and VSS) by using the Add Roles and Features Wizard.  It is a Role under the File And Storage Services/File and iSCSI Services area.

Problem _ there is no such setting (perhaps its only for 2008?>

I have the http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=19867 iSCI target install and when I vssadmin list providers I see the software VSS, the Dell EQ HQ and the target VSS provider.

Not sure what else to try.

i would prefer to use 2 VMs vs one physical server since the VMs boot much faster.

How to merge 2 .VHD files into 1?

Hi Guys,

On the same physical disk, I have 2 partitions and I created 1 VHD file on each of them; On the 1st partition, this is a 40GB vhd file, and on the 2nd partition, this is a 80GB vhd. I attached them, then they appear as 2 disks in diskmgmt.msc

I would like to know if it would be possible to merge these 2 disks into 1 disk of 120 GB ?

Thanks.

Hyper V - If you have some experience / advice please share :-)

Hi everyone. I'm just dipping into Virtualisation now, and would appreciate some feedback on my questions...hopefully I won't fall into any pitfalls!

  • Server Core or not?
  • 2008 r2 or 2012?
  • Backup – Would you use Veeam or any other 3rd party product?
  • Manage the VM’s with System Center configuration manager/Veeam One or something else?
  • Install 2008 r2 or Server 2012 Datacenter as Host (Parent) VM for unlimited activations on child CM's - is this true?
  • Child VM’s – is it worth installing Datacenter or Enterprise on each one and not Standard - Any Pro's or Con's?
  • Recommended Disk Configuration (RAID LEVEL?)
  • Any advice on best practises to follow?

I know there are a lot of questions here, but a bit of advice from seasoned Virtualisation experts would be great!

Thanks for you time.

2012 Hyper-V Guests Very Slow to Boot

$

We have two identical Dell PowerEdge T410's running Windows Server 2012 Standard running as Hyper-V Hosts (and nothing else).

The Hyper-V guests on one of the machines take over 40 minutes to boot.  Once booted the VM's seem to perform well.  The second T410 is running without any problems.

The Dell has 40Gb RAM and has 12 virtuals, the 5 XP virtuals are running with 1 GB RAM each and the 7 Windows 7 VM's have 2 Gb.

When everything is running, the Dell's task manager says it's using 22.9 of 40Gb RAM and the CPU is ticking over at 1 or 2%.

I've just wiped and re-installed the host with a clean Windows Server 2012 with no improvement.

Dell's technical support has had a quick look and can't see anything wrong with the hardware side of things.  The BIOS settings in the problematic machine has exactly the same settings as the BIOS in the machine that is working OK.

The clients on the 'slow' host are all part of a domain with the domain controller on the 'good' host.  Tracert and ipconfig all report as expected.

A 'Google' has turned up a couple of articles which seem to only refer to Windows Server 2008 R2, however, the problem only started to appear when I installed Server 2012.

So, in a nutshell, two identical servers, the guests on one are working fine, the guests on the other take over 40 minutes to boot.

Could anyone give me any pointers?

Richard
