Filter Manager failed to attach to volume

Hi,

I'm using my following script to create Disk and set the VM.

$VMLocation = New-Item -Path "$VMBaseLocation\$VMName" -ItemType Directory -Force
$VMDiskLocation = New-Item -Path "$VMLocation\Virtual Hard Disks" -ItemType Directory -Force

$VMDisk01 = New-VHD –Path $VMDiskLocation\$VMName-OSDisk.vhdx -Differencing –ParentPath $VMRefDisk
$VMDisk02 = New-VHD –Path $VMDiskLocation\$VMName-DataDisk01.vhdx -SizeBytes 60GB
Write-Host "New VHD: [$VMName-OSDisk.vhdx]" -foregroundcolor yellow
Write-Host "New VHD: [$VMName-DataDisk01.vhdx]" -foregroundcolor yellow

 $VM = New-VM –Name $VMname –MemoryStartupBytes $VMMemory –VHDPath $VMDisk01.path -SwitchName $VMNetwork -Path $VMBaseLocation
Add-VMHardDiskDrive -VM $VM -Path $VMDisk02.path –ControllerType SCSI -ControllerNumber 0
Write-Host "VM created: [$VMName]" -foregroundcolor yellow

But I always receive this error in the event viewer :

Filter Manager failed to attach to volume '\Device\HarddiskVolume18'.  This volume will be unavailable for filtering until a reboot.  The final status was 0xC03A001C.

When I start the VM it works fine, and in disk manager I have to set online and initialize the other disk.

What can cause this error ?

Hyper-V replica saved state

Hello,

Quick question regarding replication; when a VM is replicated, is it supposed to be off or in a saved state? In my POC it was always off, however I did read some documentation that said it was in a saved state (I of course cannot locate it now).

If it is indeed supposed to be off, is there any chance of being able to use saved states in the future?

Hyper-V Manager Stops

I am running Windows 2012 with Hyper-V installed.  Currently have 1 VM running.  I spend most of my time on the VM, but when I have to restart it, it does not come back up.  Logging into the Windows 2012 server and open Hyper-V Manager, the VM is not there and under Actions, says to Start Service.

This has been a continual problem with no errors in the event log.  There is no SCCM installed as I have read in other posts.

Consideration of consolidate several file servers to one VM acting as fileserver

$

Hi

I need some input and experience regarding this scenario we are heading against during the first half this year.

We have today a file server 2008 R2 and it is a VM running on a Hyper-v host (2008 r2)It has 3 partitions one c: (system partition) d: (home folders) e: (department data.) 3GB RAM

Is it 60 users that use the file server. And the amount of data is 350GB on the d: drive and 1,1 TB on the e: drive. The vhd`s are set to dynamically expanded (was going to set them to fixed but after an initial try the time it took to create them was extremly long so I was decided to go with dynamically). We are backing up the fileserver with DPM 2010 and from the agent installed on the hyper-v host once a day.

The  hyper-v host is a HP DL380 G5, 32GB RAM and 2 sata disk in a raid 1 with the parent partition and one raid 6 build on 6*500GB sata disks where all the VM running. It is running 5 VMs on the partition that is on the raid 6 disk array they are not any high load VMs except the fileserver that time to time write large amount of data to the disk.

Sometimes users complain that the performance of the file server is bad (that happens if several users copy data to the fileserver at the same time). I suspect that happen when data added to one of the vhd`s so it have to expand and the take all the disk IO and impacts the whole server. (and the other vms on the host)

We are heeding against a fileserver consolidation after we have acquired a new company with a 60 users and 1 TB data. So after that we are 120 users and 2,45 TB fileserver data and the growth rate of data is about 40 % every year.

I understand that we are need hyper-v windows 2012 to be able to have vhd larger than 2 TB.

So the plan is to buy new hardware to install hyper-v 2012 and export the current fileserver vm to that host and convert the vhd`s to vhdx. Then move the data from the oter filservers into the filserver VM.

My 3 questions are:

First have anyone experience about file servers that are running as VM`s that have a medium workload, and have vhd that are in the size off several TB`s? Was it working well or any problems?(I know that MS best practices is to use iscsi pass throw from the VM to  a physical disk area and not save the data on a VHD for large filservers)

How to size the underlying hardware? I have planned to have a hyper-v host with 6*3TB sata disks in a raid 10 to get better disk IO , then I hopefully can have some other vm`s running on the same disk array (and also parent partion).

Can dpm 2010 with an agent on a windows 2012 hyper host do hyper-v vm`s backup with single items restore as when running an dpm 2010 agent on a windows 2008r2 hyper-v host?

I hope I did not was writing to much now but if you read down to here, please reply if you have experience of this with large fileservers running as vm`s on vhd file(s)

Thanks

Jonas

Hyper-V Network Teaming 2012

$

Hello,

On a Windows 2012 Server used as a Hyper-V Host i have 8 NIC.

I have created a network Team using all of them and a new Virtual Adapter for this network team was created (Marked 10G but i dont understand if this is normal or not).

While seting up HyperV i selected only the Virtual Adapter for this team to be included in my Virtual Switch.

All my VM guests have now this Virtual Team Adapter as their only NIC on their OS.

Is my method correct?

Do i get a pottential 8G network speed on my VMs?

Do i get redudancy on my VMs?

Or i should not enable Network Teaming on my Host Server and instead add all my 8 NIC to the Hyper-V Switch and enable Network teaming individually on my Guest OS (VM Level) ?

Trying to install the all-in-one Hyper-V core from en_microsoft_hyper-v_server_2012_x64_dvd_915600.iso

System is an MB is an Intel P2600CP2 board with dual xeon E5-2620 processors

I have a 120gb SSD sata 6gb/s drive attached to a PCIe gen 2 controller card (this is where I will be installing the hypervisor)

I have 2 3TB sata drives attached to the 6gb/s ports on the motherboard (these will be setup in RAID 1 for VM storage)

When installing the iso, all disks show"This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk" with details indicating that the disk's controller may not be enabled in the BIOS.

All disks are enabled in the bios.

Looking at this post - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925481 - led me to believe that the mulitple disks were confusing the install. So I disconnected the 2 3TB from the motherboard. No luck... same thing.

ESXi v5.1 installed just fine.

Any ideas?

VM network throughput very poor

Environment is as follows:

Dell PowerEdge T320 (new), 24 GB RAM, 2 Broadcom NetXtreme NICs (LOM) @ 1 Gbps. Infrastructure is also using 1 Gbps switch and client PCs are connected there.

Windows Server 2012, Hyper-V role installed. Just one VM running now, running SQL Server. A second VM created for testing purposes, but not running.

Network throughput from the VM is very poor, typically about 3-5 MB/sec when copying a large file, but sometimes below 1 MB/sec. SQL Server network performance is so poor that apps running from a client are not usable. Running the same app logged directly to the VM is very fast, so it's not the VM itself or SQL on that VM.

Network performance from the host is excellent - can copy large files at above 100 MB/sec, essentially saturating the gigabit backbone. It's VM network performance through the virtual switch/NIC to other systems in the network that's bad.

Existing Hyper-V servers (to be replaced) running Server 2008 do not exhibit this issue.

We've tested file transfers between two VMs connected to the virtual switch on the T320. Runs fine, > 100 MB/sec. Running SQL apps from a second VM connected to the virtual switch has excellent performance.

Everything points to the transition from the virtual switch to the NIC to the internal subnet. That path is very slow.

Any suggestions?

Time sync issue event id 51 on Hyper-V VM's

$

Hi,

Hyper-V VM's are having timesync issues, Event 51 Time-Sevice is reported during the whole day/night. This results in the problem that time is always 1~10 seconds off. This is generating problems with some applications.

We are using Domain structure for time and have disabled the  Hyper-V Time integration service for the VM's

Our env consists of a root- and child domain. The Root domain PDC is a VM and has no event ID 51 error. This root PDC syncs time with an internetsource.

The PDC of the child domain (physical hardware) is syncing time with the Root domain PDC and has no event ID 51 error.

We have  some Hyper-V host, installed with 2008r2 sp1 in the childdomain. These hosts sync time with the physical child domain DC's. The VM's Running on these Hyper-V hosts are having the event id 51 timesync issue.

These hosts are running 2008R2 SP1 VM's.

Any Ideas how to get proper time sync for the VM's?

Please help me with network design, i just can't get it to work!

Hi!

I just can't figure out why this wont work please help me. First take a look at my design:

This is what i can do:

  • Ping server from HOST
  • I can browse the internet from the server
  • Ping clients from server
  • Ping Server from Clients
  • From Clients ping 192.168.20.1,192.168.30.1 and 192.168.10.100

What i can't do:

  • Ping Host or the physical router from clients and vice versa.

As there is just one server i should no need any kind of router software on the server right?

I can't figure out what i should do!

Set static routes?

Set GWs on the two interfaces with clients?

Use internal switch instead?

Please help!

Thanks!

hyper-v replication error 0x00002EFD

hi,

i'm trying to configure hyperv replication on windows 2o12 clusters. this is hosting scenario:

  • on both sides Hv is configured as a failover cluster
  • both are in different domains
  • sites are connected with VPN, proper hostname are resolavable, certificates are created and rootCA are cross-trusted

when i try to finish the replication i receive error:

connection with the server could not be wstablished (0x00002EFD)

HV connot connect to specified Replica server '<NODE-A>'. Error: A connection with the server could not be established (0x00002EFD). Verifiy that the specified server is enabled as a Replica server, allows inbound connection on port 443 and supports the same authentication scheme.

what's strange: broker service is active on second node. when i check 443 port on NODE-B - it's working fine. on NODE-A it's closed - quite logical as broker service is on NODE-B. when i move the resource, situation is mirrored - and replication error is exaclty the same but the name is change to a node without broker resource. the question isWHY THE HECK BROKER IS REDIRECTING TO A WRONG NODE?

2012 Hyper-V cluster question

$

Hi all,

we'd like to build up the 2012 Hyper-V cluster and we're considering three nodes - two for critical infrastrucutre servers and third for desktop virtualization. In Hyper-V cluster, is it possible to specify which node will run the specific VM? Or should we rather build up the two-nodes cluster and third server leave beside as stand-alone?

Is there any recommendations for Hyper-V clustering?

Thanks,

Hi, although answered before regarding hyper-v 2008, im asking the question again regarding hyper-v 2012 hoping that this feature already exist there (as it does a long time ago on VMware ESX):
is it possible to run hyper-v 2012 server (and on it to run VMs of course) on a hyper-v 2012 server?

Thank you!
Gil.

Cause of Hyper-V-Integration-VSS Event 4098

$

I'm getting many events of id 4098 in my host Hyper-V Server 2012 event log.  The guest (Server 2012) for the event is on a pass through disk being backed up by DPM Server 2012 SP1 with an agent installed in the VM.  All integration services are being offered to the guest.

I have another guest (Server 2008R2) with pass through disks on another host (Server 2012) being backed up with DPM in the same manner and I do not receive these events.  DPM agent is also installed on this guest and all integration services are being offered as well.

Both guest systems have the current integration services installed.  Does anyone know the cause of this message?  The event text is:

'GUESTSYSTEMNAME': The Virtual machine D5C3A563-DD00-4CFA-A08A-826E37720499 cannot be hot backed up since it has one or more volumes with differencing areas located on different volumes

Thanks.

"The remote session was disconnected because there were network problems during the licensing protocol" (After Installing RemoteFX/cannot get RemoteFX to work on VM Win8)

Hi Guys

I am having similar probblems like a few others here (seen simliar posts; bu no results, so I post this again):

My setup:

Dell T7600: 2 x Intel E5-2670 2,89 Ghz  64GB ram  4x 256GB ssd

NVidia Geforce GTX580

Windows Server 2012 Standard running Hyper-V and Remote Desktop Virtualization Agent

2 VMs: Win8 Enterprise and Win7 Enterprise

Problem:

After enabling RemoteFX on the 2 VMs I briefly (through Hyper-V manager interface) got the message that Remote Desktop/RemoteFX was now handling the connection. I anticipated to be able to use RDP from a physical pc (either win 7 enterprise with RDP8 add on or win 2012 server), but all I  get is this error:

"The remote session was disconnected because there were network problems during the licensing protocol"

I tried to connect from Win8, win7 (+rdp8 add on) and server 2012... but still same message....

If I remove Remote FX from thew VM, I can connect fine via RDP from any physical or virtual pc.

any idea what is going on?

Any simple tool that help to compare CPU processing power

$

Hi,

I have a virtual instance of windows server and I think the CPU gain is low. I don’t have access to the hyper-v control panel.

Is there any simple tool that I can benchmark the cpu processing power, so I can compare the CPU processing speed between multiple machines?

I found benchmarking tools that are big and expensive and I don’t think I need a complex tool for such simple task. I hope to find a simple, open source portable tool.

Thank you
