Hyper-V will not start when motherboard controller is changed

Good Afternoon, and thank you in advance for any guidance on this issue.

I have a Windows 2008 Server that has a Hyper-V VM running on it.  We need to make some changes to the host OS in the BIOS of the Intel motherboard the system is running on.  When I go into the BIOS and change the controller that is being used, our host OS comes up fine (and the device that was requiring us to change the controller in the first place), but when we go to start the VM, the VM will not start because it cannot find its controller.

How can I get the VM to see the new controller?  I was going to go in under the old controller where both the host OS and the Hyper-V VM both work, remove the controller in the VM then reboot into the BIOS and change the controller.

Will this allow the VM to seek and find the new controller?  Or will I end up damaging the Hyper-V VM completely by removing the controller?

Before I go in and do anything I wanted to see if anyone has some advice and direction on how to best change the controller and have the VM come up properly.

Again, thank you in advance for any help and direction in this issue.
