We have been looking into using Server 2012 Hyper-v with Scale Out File Servers. We have been informed that the solution would cost less using a DAS device, but there would be a single point of failure due to the DAS device only having one controller (Attached locally). I'm not sure whether this information is correct. I would be interested in hearing from any system integrators who have build Highly Available Server 2012 Hyper-v/SOFS solutions. We've been directed towards a traditional SAN setup using VMware Essentials. However, I have also asked for comparison using Server 2012 Hyper-V with a SAN storage setup.
