Hyper-V 2012: Problem with the creation of VHD(x) files from a remote workstation

Hello everyone,

I am just checking out Hyper-V 2012 server. While setting up my lab I stumbled across an annoying issue: Using the Hyper-V manager from a remote Windows 8 workstation I cannot create virtual machines using the "New VM" wizard nor can I create standalone VHD or VHDx files for data storage. In both cases the wizard ends up in an infinite loop telling me its still working on creating the VHD(x) files.

Curiously, the VHD or VHDx file (dynamic expanding) are successfully create with their minimal size (260 kB for VHD or 4 MB for VHDx) and can be attached to and read from a virtual machine later on.

Both the Hyper-V server and the client are in the same workgroup "workgroup". I configured the remote management and remote desktop access via sconfig on the Hyper-V server. On the workstation I placed a host entry in the "HOSTS" file to provide for name resolution and added the credentials to manage the Hyper-V server to my local workstation user using cmdkey. Also I modified the DCOM settings on my workstation to allow for anonymous access. For troubleshooting purposes I also disabled the Windows Firewall in all profiles on the Hyper-V server, with no effect whatsoever.

Does anybody around here have an idea, what I am missing? Your help is greatly appreciated!
