Hyper-V data storage on Non-Windows server

I have setup a Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V and would like to store my VM's on my NAS, since this should now be a supported scenario.

The network share on my NAS is wideopen permissionwise. I am able to create and store configuration files and vhd's, but when I try to start the VM it fails with "An attempt to initialize VM saved state failed".

Needless to say I have no problems running VM's when I store them locally.

Any idea what I am doing wrong?
