Can a cancelled VHD expansion cause data loss?

Hi All,

I initiated the expansion of a VHD after unmounting the drive in question from a VM (shutting down the VM was required). I then attempted to start the VM again however when I found that it was going to take too long to start I made the decision to cancel the VHD expansion. The expansion was going to take upward of an hour and I had to get the VM in question up and running within 15 minutes.

(when I clicked on 'Cancel' within the 'Expand Drive' progress dialog box there was no warning that doing so would cause adverse affects)

Once the 'Expand Drive' dialog box had gone I mounted the VHD again (which I had earlier tried to expand) and successfully started up the VM in a timely fashion.

I didn't give the situation any further thought until a colleague came to me and mentioned that data loss had occurred on our File Server. The data loss was from the VHD that I had tried to expand.

I have now been asked to explain what caused the data loss, and I want some honest opinions on what pressing the 'Cancel' button in the midst of an attempted VHD expansion will do.

Did my pressing the cancel button trigger the data loss or should I be looking at other potential candidates such as the health of the RAID array?

Any help or opinions here will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

David
