isolating 3d games in guest vm

Is this at all possible with the free Hyper-V Server?

I have a server PC connected to a big screen in our living room, running a native installation of Windows 7 Media Center for TV, photos, etc. My kids are growing up so there is currently an increasing number of games being installed on this system, threatening its stability.

I would like to separate these installations into distinct virtual machines in a hypervisor, let's call them the Media VM and Gaming VM, that both would display full-screen on the monitor. I've understood that the 3D GPU requirements of the Gaming VM might present problems. There would also be some other VMs I use for development work, but these have no special requirements.

The hardware setup is one computer with one monitor, keyboard and mouse. I guess possible configurations could include:

  • the hypervisor somehow allows to switch display between Media VM or Gaming VM
  • or, the Media VM is always displayed on the monitor, and inside this a console or remote desktop tool can be used to show the Gaming VM
  • or, two graphics cards are used so each VM can own (by passthrough) its own GPU and the monitor gets connected with one cable to each graphics card
  • or, other setups?

Thanks
Mike

How to fix unsupported cluster configuration

$

I've set up cluster environment for Hyper V environment.

I have 2 servers with 2 NIC per server.

First NIC is connected to our LAN network for Public communication.

2nd NIC is connected straight to each other server with cross over cable.

Under Hyper-V management I've set up 2 virtual network, each binding to each network interface.

First one I named it as External Network and it's linking to my Public communication with VLAN.

For this virtual network I uncheck the Allow management operating system to share this network adapater.

2nd one I name it as Hyper V Management Network and Failover.

For this virtual network I checked the Allow management operating system to share this network adapater.

But when I checked my Hyper-V instances from VMM, it mentioned that The highly available virtual machine is not supported by VMM because one or more of its network adapters is not configured correctly.

Ensure that all of the virtual network adapters are either disconnected or connected to highly available virtual networks.

The other problem is those VM can failover when I restarted the host VM but it'll not failover when I disconnect or disable Public Communication NIC.

By right it should be able to failover by using private network between the 2 servers right?

Since I already set the failover network to this private network.

Please can someone advise me what's wrong with the settings?

How to use available local storage to create VMs?

I have a server with 8, 900Gb SAS drives. I've created an 80Gb partition using the LSI RAID controller and installed 2012 Hyper-V to that partition. The remainder of the space from all disks is available to use for creating my VMs.

When I'm in Hyper-V manager...how do I get Hyper-V to see the remaining disk size that's available to actually begin creating my VMs?

Should I reboot the server, go into the RAID BIOS and create a single. logical partition, or will Hyper-V, somehow, "see" the raw disk size that's available? Do I need to create a storage pool?

I'm sure this is probably pretty basic, but I'm new to Hyper-V so I'm not sure how to present the available drive size to Hyper-V so I can start creating my VMs.

Thank you,

Ed

Where to establlish my PPPoE session, host or VM, and how to ensure the IP address gets to the VM without using NAT

$

My ISP provides a static public IP after I establish my PPPoE tunnel. I am going to plug my ADSL model directly into the my server's ethernet port and I want to establish the PPPoE tunnel directly from the MS Server 2008 R2's ethernet interface. My cpanel application that really needs this address is running on Cent OS in a VM on this server. When I setup the VM, I specified that it would be connected to the external interface. So my question is, when I establish the PPPoE tunnel, the public IP will be assigned to my host's interface, will that same IP be assigned to my VM's is interface? Or is NAT happening between the host and VM's interface. I notice that there were some virtualization interfaces established after setting Hyper V so perhaps a private internal address is assigned to my VM's interface.

If so, is there a way to bridge the address to the VM since I am told that NAT will break the application.

If this doesn't work could I use the host to establish the PPPoE session on the physical interface, assign it an "unnumbered" address and bridge the public IP onto the VM's interface?

Or if that doesn't work could establish the PPPoE session directly from the VM's interface and have it traverse the host's interface back to ISP, where the IP address response will bypass the host and end up on the VM's interface?

windows server 2003 sp2 p2v via disk2vhd

Hello,

i have a non DC windows server 2003 sp2 (x86) which needs to be Virtualized for windows server with  hyper-v role. we don't have resources for scvmm or an extra hardware for it so we are going to use disk2vhd. I've read articles and here and there and know that there are some issues when p2v-ing 2003 servers via disk2vhd (drivers, not loading etc)

Anyone experienced, who has done p2v of 2003 server can give me an advice how to do it ?  what is the process of converting it ?

regarding the server, it is 2003R2 sp2 standart edition, 2 cpus and no scsi controllers. there are 2 149gb disks , one of them is split for c (40gb) and d(109gb).

thanks

Any simple tool that help to compare CPU processing power

Hi,

I have a virtual instance of windows server and I think the CPU gain is low. I don’t have access to the hyper-v control panel.

Is there any simple tool that I can benchmark the cpu processing power, so I can compare the CPU processing speed between multiple machines?

I found benchmarking tools that are big and expensive and I don’t think I need a complex tool for such simple task. I hope to find a simple, open source portable tool.

Thank you

Hyper-V performance with Microsoft EMET EAF Feature in VDI and ReCoBS

$

EMET is very useful for Remote-Controlled Browsers Systems (ReCoBS) and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).

Applications protected with the EMET EAF feature run about 10 times slower (or at 10% speed) in Hyper-V Guests presumably because processor debug registers are used. The performance counter"Hypervisor Root Virtual Processor(*)\Debug Register Accesses/sec" increases to a few 10 thousands on my system when EMET EAF protected applications run.

Any ideas to improve the performance without loosing the EAF benefits?

The EMET documentation doesn't explicitly reference Hyper-V, but: “Some virtual machines do not support debug registers (and consequently EAF). However, the EAF option will still be available for configuration even if EMET is being run on a machine that doesn’t support debug registers. Setting this option on those machines will have no effect. Be aware of this limitation when configuring EAF.“

DRM and Copy Protection (SecuROM and/or SafeDisc afair) software is also affected.

Installation Windows 7 Embedded STD on HyperV2012 with RemoteFX

Hi,

I install Windows 7 Embedded on HyperV 2012 as guest OS, and when I try to connect by rdp I have a message "The remote session was disconnected because there were network problems during licensing protocol". Without remoteFX - OK. Is Win7 Embedded supported OS for RemoteFX? My friend bing don't know.

I use Windows SERVER 2012 STANDARD Evaluation and Windows Embedded Standard SP1 x64.

Thank you in advance.

Disable write cache on VHDX in Hyper-V DC guests.

I have a couple of DC's running Server 2012 as Hyper-V guest machines.  I have write caching disabled on the hosts RAID controller (no cache battery), but for some reason, I can't disable write caching on the VHDX virtual drives that the DC guest servers reside on.  This has caused me issues twice during extended overnight power outages that have caused unclean shutdowns of the physical server, corrupting AD databases on the guest servers.  I just spent four hours force-removing AD from one of the servers, rejoining, and fixing all the other associated issues due to corrupted AD databases.

How the heck do you disable write caching on the boot drive on a Hyper-V guest when the guest OS says the device does not allow the setting to be changed?  Oh, the VHDX is mounted as an ATA device.  Do I need to create a tiny VHDX to mount as an ATA device as a boot volume, and then install the OS on a SCSI mounted VHDX, or how else can I fix this problem?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

RSAT does not include Hyper-V

I just ran into something I consider a little strange.  Maybe I missed something.  Either that or it was an oversight by Microsoft that I think needs to be fixed.

I was building out a Windows 8 workstation to have a management workstation for managing all my Windows Server/Hyper-V 2012 environment.  I installed Windows 8, downloaded RSAT for Windows 8, and installed it.  I wanted to be able to use either GUI or PowerShell from the workstation for management.

I was a bit surprised that Hyper-V is not one of the managed roles within RSAT.  As a result, I have neither the GUI nor the PowerShell cmdlets.  I can get both by installing Hyper-V onto the workstation, but it seems a little heavy handed to require that to get the management components.  And, since I am creating this management workstation as a VM, it makes it really difficult

Looking a bit deeper into this, I noticed that even on a Windows Server installation, the only way to get the Hyper-V management tools is to install the Hyper-V role.  There is not a separate add-windowsfeature for just management tools.

Am I missing something?  Do others think this is not an optimal way to set up management workstations?

How can I add the Windows Server backup role to a Dedicate Hyper-V server that is in a workgroup role.

$

I am stating to build small dedicated 2012 Hyper-V Servers for different clients (in stead of using XENServer free edition) and I would like to keep the Hyper-V bare metal server in a workgroup role ie I dont want to put it into a Domain, and I would like to run the native Windows block level backup on the Hyper-V server. How can I add the Backup Role to the Hyper-V server with out having to join a 2012 domain. I have tried to add the role using Windows 8 with RSAT in a workgroup mode but Windows 8 no longer has Windows Backup as a role and therefore you can't add the role to the Hyper-V Server.

Network Connectivity

I have a windows 2008 r2 server that is a virtual machine on hyper-v.  I am losing network connectivity in the early morning hours.  I am getting this in event viewer every time it loses network connectivity.

The TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service was successfully sent a stop control.

The reason specified was: 0x40030011 [Operating System: Network Connectivity (Planned)]

Any suggestions on how to fix this would be helpful.

2012 Datacenter redirecting com ports to my VM

I have just installed Windows 2012 Datacenter and enabled Hyper-V.  I also installed a pci-e card to increase my serial ports x 2.

After installing a VM server on Windows 2008 R2, I'm trying to figure out how to get com 3 and com 4 enabled for the newly created VM.  Is it possible?  The settings states something about name pipes, how do I configure name pipes so my VM will recognize com 3 and com 4?

Using iscsi initiator within a VM vs a passthrough disk, vs vhdx

$

With the advent of H-V verison 3 (2012) I think this quesion needs to be revisited.  I was told long ago (about a year and a half :) ), that it was frowned upon to use an iSCSI connection from within a child VM.  If the data was large (more than 2TB), then using a pass-though disk was perferred. You lost HA, live migraton, etc, but oh well. Now, things have definitely changed, but the matrix of determining the right answer is too much for me.  So I ask the gods of all Microsoft Knowledge, what is the current state of this question?  Can I (should I) use an iSCSI initiator in a VM to attach to iSCSI SAN storage?  Should I just convert the disk to a vhdx and gain all things good and holy that the MS gods want me to realize with a virtual environment?  Should I stick with pass-through because it still offers APPRECIABLY better performance (in my instance, I'm talking about file server storage, but we can assume for everyone's benefit that we might be talking about more robust performance needs)?  What say you?

Thanks,

Hyper-V Networking between VMs

$

Reference Image:http://i.imgur.com/FzQ1QZo.png

So i have that setup:

5 VMs on 1 Physical Server (Server 2012), they (VMs) all use the "internal" type of hyper-v network.

IP setup on each VM:

IP: 192.168.1.X /24

DNS: 192.168.1.50

GW: 192.168.1.50

They can ping the DC but they cant ping anyone else, the DC has records of them being at their respective IPs.......

I dont need them to talk to the physical server, i just need a mini server network so i can test some sccm stuff.

Pros and cons? One large vhdx or several smaller vhdx files?

$
0
0

I have several appx. 6 TB of space I'm going to use to install several VMs on.

1.) Since I'm using Hyper-V 2012, I'd want to use the .vhdx format and not the older .vhd, right?

2.) Should I pre-plan what disk space I want to use for each soon to be VM and pre-create my .vhdx files in advance to use that space, or should I just create one big, 6TB .vhdx file and when I install each OS, simply choose what size I want the disk to be at that point?

3.) Keeping backups in mind, it seems like having indiviual .vhdx files for each OS will make backups easier, wouldn't it?

Thank you,

Ed

Hyper-V Storage Pools on top of Hardware RAID?

$
0
0

Should I avoid using the Storage Pools feature of 2012 since I have a hardware RAID controller (Perc H710)?

I've found conflicting advice on this issue such as:

  • Disable HW RAID in favor of Storage Pools, but then I won’t have access to the drives because the storage is local and must be configured in RAID Bios
  • Use HW RAID to setup RAID1 on two drives for Parent OS, and then HW RAID0 all other drives so they are seen by Windows, but then use Storage Pools to manage those drives
  • HW RAID10 all drives into one large drive, and then use Storage Pools
  • Avoid Storage Pools altogether in favor of HW RAID

I’d like to eventually cluster the storage with another physical server and its local storage too.I wanted to mention that in case that makes a difference.

Any advice is appreciated, thanks.
