Hyper-V VMs using dynamic memory report incorrect values over SNMP

$

I am using Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V. I switched a particular VM to dynamic memory and noticed something wrong with the physical memory graph in my SNMP monitoring software (Cacti 0.8.8a). The value being reported by Windows over SNMP as the total physical memory appears to actually be the memory demand of the VM, as you can see in the image. I have set the startup memory to 512 MB and the maximum memory to 5120 MB. When I took this screenshot, Hyper-V reported the memory demand as 8.85 GB.

The gap in the graph is the time at which dynamic memory was enabled. The blue graph should never be above 5.00 G here, and the red graph should be the actual RAM usage (not sure what it's getting that value from). I have posted this to the Cacti forums and was informed that it seems to be a problem with the way Microsoft implemented the counter in the SNMP agent. Can someone from Microsoft comment on this?

Thanks.

Windows 2008 R2 crashes when Intel(R) HD ??? is installed and Hyper-V role is added

Hi there

I installed Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise on my PC with following hardware configuration:

Intel Core i3 540 3.07 GHz
M.B Asus P7H55-M with Intel HD Graphics (On-board)
4 GB of RAM

Here's the Problem:

When I add Hyper-V role without installing the On-Board VGA driver (Intel HD Graphics) everything works well. I even created 3 virtual machines working perfectll well.

But as I install the driver, turning the Standard VGA to Intel HD after restarting the Welcome screen crashes! I mean i cannot log on becuase nothing is clear and works. after some minutes blue screen comes up. then restarts and the same.

and when I disable Virtual Technology in BIOS in CPU configuration, windows starts up very well. Just I cannot work with Hyper-V obviously.

I think clearly ther is a conflict between Hyper-V and Intel HD Graphics here. But how do I resolve it?

hyperv cluster errors

Dear all,

We use 3 nodes with FC adapters and win 2008 R2 SP1 core hyperv cluster with CSV for about 2 years now. The storage system is FC from the X vendor, recently we have installed new storage system from the x vendor (x vendor told us that is ok to install 2 different x multipathing drivers for both systems). We have added the new storage system luns as CSV in the cluster. The migration procedure we are using to migrate VMs from old x storage system to new x storage system(we dont trust doing it through SCVMM 2008 as many times failed) is by exporting the VM through hyperv manager to the new x storage system CSV volume (we always are careful so the node we are using is the owner of those volumes), then delete the vm from cluster, next delete from hyperv manager, next import the machine through hyperv manager and next make it highly available. During this procedure we need many times to migrate machines and move CSV owners. I have noticed the following problems that i am not sure if i had them before (maybe some of them i had some times live migration failed). Note that recently we had some strange ntfs corruptions on many VMs that looked like was caused by a faulty controller on the x storage(as only machines that was on that controller has the corruptions) with support from x vendor and on some VMs we ran chkdsk we fixed the problem.

Problem 1). When i try to live migrate a VMs sometimes it fails and maybe next it success

Problem 2). When i try to live migrate a VM it fails and it turns off the vm(which is very bad for us) and i see on host the following 2 errors <<live migration did not succeed at the destination. Live migration of ""did not succeed. (Virtual machine ID 3A7E6656-)Could not receive data from the remote node: The operation completed successfully. (0x00000000)>> and the second error <<Could not send data to the remote node: The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request. (0x000003E3)>>

Problem 3). When we restart a host that has no VM on it and no CSV owner on it. On the other 2 nodes i see the following error for 2 or 3 disks among 20 we have <<X MPIO Generic Module failed to return a Path to \Device\MPIODisk19>>

Problem 4). When a specific VM is on host one let's say and running ok and i am trying to open the hyperv setting for that machine through failover clustering management CONSOLE i see onE of the 2 following errors. While if i open the hyperv settings through hyperv manager it opens ok, and if i move this machine to other host it open ok again. <<An error was encountered opening virtual machine settings, make sure virtual machine configuration is online, the operation on computer "" failed, the application called an interface that was marshalled for a different thread(exception from HRESULT:0X80011010E(RPC_E_WRONG_THREAD))>>, and the second error <<An error was encountered opening virtual machine settings, make sure virtual machine configuration is online, the operation on computer "" failed, unable to cast COM object of type 'System._ComObject' to interface type 'System.Management.IWbemServices'. This operation failed because the QueryInterface call on the COM component for theinterface with IDD{the id of the machine} failed due to the following error: Exception from HRESULT:0x80070108.

Problem 5). When i move CSV ownership from one host to other i see the failover clustering console flashing, i notice that the VM that i am loged in which is on another host and on another CSV, of the same cluster always, looks like lossing the disk access for a couple o seconds. Why moving one CSV ownership affect machines that are on diferent CSVs? And sometimes it takes more time to move and lose access maybe for 4-5 seconds or more and some times less. Why should changing ownership of a CSV affect most of the machines in the cluster(not all the times and i am not sure if matter of how many machines are on that CSV)? For this problem i did not find any errors on the hosts event log.

Now I do not know if I should open service request with the x vendor or with Microsoft

How do I re-enable the VM IC Time Synchronization Provider for a VM?

$

Due to some time synchronization issues, I messed a bit too much with my Time Service settings and now my VM is stuck on the "Local CMOS Clock" time source.

I would like to get it back to sync with the "VM IC Time Synchronization Provider".

So far, I tried the solution proposed here: http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Server/Windows_Server_2008/Q_27256647.html But the VM is still using the wrong source. I also re-installed the Hyper-V Integration package to no avail.

In the registry, I noticed the key HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\w32time\TimeProviders\VMICTimeProvider\Parameters is missing the sub-key "IPC", which exists on another machine that is working as intended.

How do I reinstall a Hyper-V host without exporting/importing VMs?

$

I need to reinstall the host OS with the least possible downtime for the VMs?  From what I've read, you have to shut down a VM in order to export it, and the export process is slow.  Since the VMs include the company Exchange server and domain controller, I need to have as little down time as possible.

The host OS is on its own partition, so I would like to format/reinstall the host on that partition and leave the VHDs where they are at.  I hope to then be able to install Hyper-V on the host and restart the VMs.  Is this possible?

Thanks

Server 2012 RC - Have To Reboot Before Being Able to Attach DVD Drive to a Different VM: Cannot Create a file when that file already exists?

$

On the physical server everytime I want to attach the DVD drive to a different VM I need to reboot the physical server before it will work.

Each time I release the DVD drive from one client and then attach it to the other but then when I try to start the VM I have just attached it to I get the following error:

The application encountered an error while attempting to change the state of 'VM NAME'.

'VM NAME' failed to start.

Microsoft Emulated IDE controller (Instance ID ...): Failed to Power on with Error 'Cannot create a file when that file already exists.'.

Failed to open attachment 'E:'. Error: 'Cannot create a file when that file already exists.'.

If I restart the physical server and then try to start the VM it starts without any errors. I just don't want to have to keep rebooting the server in order to attach the DVD drive as obviously this makes all the VMs unavailable so the domain controller, DNS and website go down.

Is this a known bug in the Windows Server 2012 RC or is something not configured correctly?

Thanks

Robin

Hi all

I have 3 node hyperv cluster 2008 R2 SP1 core. I have one teamed network for cluster internal communication only, and one teamed network for mixed cluster comunication and management, all other networks are disabled or used for virtual network hyperv(i have unchecked "alloe management os to share this card"). On 2 of the hosts it shows a "local area conncetion 12" as failed and in the cluster it creates a "cluster network 1" . Local are connection 12 is disabled as it is a intel network adapter that i dont use. On the "cluster network 1" i have selected the option "dont allow cluster comminication on this netowk" but icannot remove this network form cluster console even if restart the hosts. Is this an isue? how can i remove this so i dont see status failure on cluster management. I am posting in continuing of the below post

Host lost connection to the network, but clients can connect.

Hi,

I am having a very strange behavior. My Hyper-V host computer was working fine until one day it could not connect to the network, but its VMs client can. I am using DHCP, but I also tried to use a static IP address and cannot even ping the Gateway. Meanwhile, I can remote connect to the VM and have full access. The Hyper-V host only has the command line OS version, so I am very limited on the trouble shooting. Anyone had this issue? Any ideas on what the problem is or how to trouble shot? Thanks!

Best regards,

John

What is the replacement for the 70-659 exam on windows server 2008 R2 virtualization

Hi,

I have read on microsoft.com/learning that 70-659 will be retired in July 2013. Does anyone know what exam would be replacing it. Am I right to assume the equivalent/new exam will be based on server 2012.

Can not activate guest OSes in Windows 2008 Datacenter ed.

Hi,

I am Volume License User.

I installed and activated Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Datacenter Core ed. with Hyper-V role on it using ISO and MAK key provided by the Volume License service (I have less then 5 physical 2k8 systems so KMS would not work).

I installed number of VMs (using same ISO as for Host) based on Windows 2008 Standard in Core and Full editions and I am trying to activate them but none will accept the MAK key used for the host Datacenter edition which should be the way to proceed if I understand correctly.

when I run command

slmgr.vbs -ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx (MAK for our Datacener)

I am receiving error:

"On a computer running Microsoft Windows non-core edition, run 'slui.exe 0x2a 0xC004F015' to display the error text. Error 0xC004F015"

Which translates to: The Software Licensing Service reported that the license is not installed.

Without being able to register the key I cannot proceed to activation step.

What am I missing? Or how it should be done to avail of unlimited VM activations on Windows 2k8 Datacenter ed.?

Thank you,

Sebastian Korfanty

Merge-VHD Powershell Command fails

Hi,

I'm using Windows Server 2012 RC and running a highly available VM on Hyper-V cluster (using shared storage and CSV2.0). My VM has the only one differencing VHD. When I try to use Merge-VHD commandlet to merge the existing VHD I have a following output:

PS C:\> Merge-VHD -path 'C:\ClusterStorage\Volume3\vm1\vm1.vhd' -DestinationPath 'C:\ClusterStorage\Volume3\vm1\vm1merged.vhd'

If the merge succeeds, the system will still not be able delete 'C:\ClusterStorage\Volume3\vm1\vm1.vhd' due to internal errors: One or more arguments are invalid (0x800

I created a new vhd that i'm using to merge to. I'm aware of UAC. I've got administrator rights. When I try to merge the vhd using hyper-v manager GUI, everything is fine. Could anybody help me please?

Loop traffic on physical network adapter

$

I installed Windows 2008 R2 datacenter on a physical server with 4 physical network adapters as a hyper-v host. I assigned 1 adapter as management adapter and assigned 1 adapter as dedicated adapter for the VM's, disabling the option "Allow management operating system to share this network adapter".

Now the VM's don't generate lots of traffic, but still physical network adapter is generating high network utilization to itself. See image below

And see here the traffic utilization on the switch port

It's looks like it's generating traffic to itself, but non of the VM's is generating any traffic. I have no idea how to solve this. Anyone any ideas?

Imaging a system that contains VM's in Hyper-V

I have a collection on VM's in Hyper-V that I want to re-deploy on a few other systems. I couldn't find a way to do it through Hyper-V itself. I considered imaging the entire OS, however sysprep /generalize would remove the needed system specific information that the VM's use. Is there anyway around this?

Bottleneck/High usage on CPU 0 on Hyper-V Guest directly related to network traffic

$

Hi Everyone!

I am experiencing a problem where Hyper-V guest virtual machines show very high CPU usage on core 0 (causing other applications to slow down and the VM to be less responsive) with what I would consider to be relatively little network traffic. There is a definite correlation between network traffic and CPU usage as the former always brings the later.

Occasionally, I can achieve 90-100MBps on some servers going through a VM Bus Network Adapter connected to a dual gigabit physical adapter team, but, this gives 60-90% CPU usage on core 0 inside the VM with all other cores showing ~0% usage. Most of the time, 50-80MBps will give the same 60-90% CPU usage on core 0. This seems to happen regardless of the number of cores assigned to the VM, 1-4 makes no difference.

I am aware that RSS is not supported on VM Bus Network Adapters, to spread the load across the available cores, but I thought that using a VM Bus Network Adapter was meant to be some what faster due to it having a direct connection to the physical host server. I have also configured VMQ, to try and speed things up.

It seems to me that the speed of the network connection is limited by the speed of the processor. With the general rule of thumb that a 1 Gbps adapter with no offloading capabilities will use 1Ghz worth or processing power, adding 25% for a VM giving 1.25Ghz, meaning that my VM with 2.6Ghz CPU and 10Gbps VM Bus Network Adapter is only capable of 2Gbps throughput maximum, and wont be able to do anything else whilst doing that due to CPU 0 being maxed out even if the rest of the cores aren't.

The bottom line is that I seem to be missing the point, or missing a vital piece of information, that will allow high network bandwidth without bottlenecking at CPU 0 on my VM's.

How can I achieve high network throughput on VM's without wasting valuable CPU cycles? Is it possible to offload processing from the VM to elsewhere?

For clarity, our setup is as follows:

Hyper-V Hosts
2 x Dell PER715 with 2 x 8 Core AMD Op 6140, 64GB RAM, 12 x Bcm 5709C NICs with TOE and iSCSI Offload
Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacentre SP1 in a 2 node Hyper-V failover cluster
All software, firmware and drivers up to date
VMQ configured and enabled for all virtual networks

Hyper-V Guests
Any Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

SAN
2 Node DataCore iSCSI SAN on the back end

On the R715(s)
2 x iSCSI direct to the host for guest vhds
2 x iSCSI virtual network direct to guest VM
1 x Team with 2 x 1Gbps for VM access
Other NICs for cluster and management

Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. If any further information is required, please don't hesitate to ask!

Many thanks in advance,

Tom

Physical files size is not equal to disk space of SAN

Dear Sir/Madam,

It would be great if you can help.

In server 2008 R2 hyper v environment, a D driver (SAN) is used to store hyper-v files (e.g .VHD)

by explorer in this physical server, I selected all files and try to see how many size they use, windows prompted that 4XX GB has been used (Location: All in D:\)

However, by checking the disk properties, it shows the Used space is 7XXGB (NTFS)

I have tried to check whether there is any hidden files used the space, but it seems that this is not the reason.

In the VMs , all of them are using Dynamically Expanding Virtual Hard Disk, some of them have snapshots.

Is that the dynamic VHD have been reserved the physical disk spaces ?or this is the problem related to the VSS backup (for detail, please refer to http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winserverhyperv/thread/4a6481a6-57e2-47c0-8145-33a3f29b48e9?

Thanks for your help

Installing Hyper-V on 2008 R2 results in BSOD

Installing Windows 2008 R2 on an Intel i7 3920XM Extreme processor with lates BIOS and drivers. The processor has all the latest VT support and is on automatically. There is no setting in BIOS to turn it on. Hyper-V installed successfully on 2012 RC with VM's created worked fine but 2012 RC is still a little unstable so I wanted to go back to 2008 R2 The NIC is compatible. After installing Hyper-V role the server needs to restart. It restarts BSOD. The event logs says the VT driver is not installed or it needs to configured in the BIOS. Am I to assume that this processor is so new there is no provision for it to work correctly with 2008 R2 but works with 2012 RC? Anyone know anything about this?

Is it possible the following scenario - Physical server 2008 VHD backup file, created by wbadmin.exe to run in Hyper-V server?

Hi all,

Sorry, if my question has already been discussed, but i was unable to find any similar threads.

Here is my question:

One of our physical web servers is running Windows Server 2008 Standard x64, and is being backuped daily by default backup utility for server 2008 (wbadmin.exe).
I am curiuous is it possible to restore this VHD backup file into Hyper-V server (said in other way to create new VM using that VHD image).
If it's possible - what are the steps to successfully do this?

Thanks in advance for the answers! I appreciate your help!

I am running Hyper V on a W2008 R2 machine with an Ubuntu 12.0.4 server as a virtual server. I have created a backup .vhd file using HVBackup onto a removable drive using the command prompt line HVBackup -l [name of virutal machine] -o E:\ and am trying to get it to run on a second W2008 R2 machine with Hyper V but when I start the Virtual Machine, Hyper V starts OK and then I get:

boot failure. reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device

The purpose of the second machine is as a security backup with the intention of creating a security backup at least once a week.

I am very new to virtual machines and Hyper V so any advice would be greatly appreciate.
