Hyper-V 2012 Virtual Machine Management Service stops for no apparent reason

Starting initial testing for migration to Hyper-V 2012 (or is it referred to as v3.0?). Essentially out of the box install of Server 2012 Data Center RTM (Full), with Hyper-V role enabled. The day after the initial setup. I opened the Hyper-V console from a remote computer to start testing and was unable to connect to the Hyper-V Management Service. Logging in to the server directly I see that the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management services has stopped (Kudos MS for making that so easy to see!). After spending awhile in the event log and finding no reason (I see the service stop but no errors associated with it) I chalk it up to a fluke of the previous days initial install. Next day same thing. Except two other services have also stopped. More event log research but no trail to follow. It’s as if the service is being commanded by something to stop?? The only possible connection I see is ConfigMgr 2012 client activity near the same time frame as the service stopping.

Obviously I can’t move forward with further testing and migration until I sort this out. Sure I can set the services to restart but not the ideal option.

Any ideas? Or is 2012 too new to consider for production? I’ve included a couple of event log entries and a list of the services that get stopped.

Thanks, Ken

Hyper-V 2012 guests go into 'Paused' state during backup and do not resume

I know there is a similar thread in the Clustering forum that discusses this;

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverClustering/thread/7a7ddaca-fb09-4c9a-b0ae-9f3b5e10694d

But our servers are not clustered and have local storage and experience the same issues as reported in the above thread.

Occasionally after Veeam backups the guests go into 'Paused' state and do not resume, in the Hyper-V-VMMS log the following is logged;

Log Name:      Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS-Admin
Source:        Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS

Description:<hostname> has been paused because it has run out of disk space on 'V:\Virtual Disks\<hostname>\'.

Note: the local volume V:\ has over 1,5TB of free space so this is not a disk space issue.

In the other thread it mentions a hotfix available from Microsoft KB2791729 but it is not yet available publicly, has anyone had the same issue and deployed the hotfix, if so did it fix the issue without any side-effects?

Hyper V 2012 Backup - best practice

I'm setting up a new Hyper-V server 2012 and I'm trying to understand how to best configure it for backups and restores usingWindows Server Backup. I´ve 5 VMs running, everyone has their one iScsi drive.

I would like to backup the VMs on a external usb disk. I´ve the choice to backup the Hyper-V using child partition snapshot or to backup the vm folder with the config and the vhd files (is is right, that Windows override the old backup ?)

What´s the difference between the two methods ?  Is incremental back possible with vm´s ?

thanks

Hyper-v 2012 unabel to connect from Windows 7

let me start saying I have installed VMWARE many times and always very first time able to connect from using vSphere without any unnecessary security/firewall and issues...

Now in my lab installed hyper-v 2012 so so far so good but when try to connect from Windows 7 (64bit) machine .. no success.

There are few/many different suggestion but it seems no easy answer. so far I have spent more than 2 hrs.

Well, lets see someone ou tthere able to help.

Must no wonder Hyper-V is not catching as fast as Microsoft like ... I am/will be one of those....

Adding disk to Windows XP guest

I've got a Windows 8 computer running Hyper-V. I've created a Windows XP VM and am trying to attach another disk. I've added both a VHD (created using powershell) and a physically attached (e-SATA) disk. I've added the disks while the VM was both on and off. I also tried changing the location (the SCSI ID). In the VM, I've used Disk Manager to rescan disks and diskpart to list disks and volumes.

The second disk just isn't showing up in XP. What gives?

Thanks.

Hyper-V 2012: Problem with the creation of VHD(x) files from a remote workstation

Hello everyone,

I am just checking out Hyper-V 2012 server. While setting up my lab I stumbled across an annoying issue: Using the Hyper-V manager from a remote Windows 8 workstation I cannot create virtual machines using the "New VM" wizard nor can I create standalone VHD or VHDx files for data storage. In both cases the wizard ends up in an infinite loop telling me its still working on creating the VHD(x) files.

Curiously, the VHD or VHDx file (dynamic expanding) are successfully create with their minimal size (260 kB for VHD or 4 MB for VHDx) and can be attached to and read from a virtual machine later on.

Both the Hyper-V server and the client are in the same workgroup "workgroup". I configured the remote management and remote desktop access via sconfig on the Hyper-V server. On the workstation I placed a host entry in the "HOSTS" file to provide for name resolution and added the credentials to manage the Hyper-V server to my local workstation user using cmdkey. Also I modified the DCOM settings on my workstation to allow for anonymous access. For troubleshooting purposes I also disabled the Windows Firewall in all profiles on the Hyper-V server, with no effect whatsoever.

Does anybody around here have an idea, what I am missing? Your help is greatly appreciated!

I'm setting up a new server that Server 2012 Hyper-V will be the host of.

Is there a "best practices" as to how large of partition it should be installed within?

Comments? Suggestions?

Intel x5450 CPU has VT-x but not EPT (SLAT), will it run server 2012 hyper-v??

Hi all,

I have a fully virtualized platform already running on Xenserver 6.1. I have recently upgraded it and Im wanting to run server 2012 and windows 8 VM's. These are only "experimental" guests and not fully supported at the minute on xenserver 6.1 (I can't wait for them to get their arses in gear!!)

I plan to export the VM's as .ovf's and import back into hyper-v. The hardware is a single box PowerEdge 1950 iii with a couple of X5450 CPU's. These are VT-x capable but NOT VT-x with EPT (SLAT).

Firstly will it work, I think so...? If it will, what performance will I loose through not having EPT cpu's? I'm sure this has been asked to death but thoughts please, thanks in advance.

Convert VMware Virtual Machine to Hyper-V-2012 in WORKGROUP

I am unable to convert VMware virtual machine to hyper-v-2012 in workgroup. Does MS virtual machine converter work/support WORJGROUP? By the way, the VMware converter works great  "converting from hyper-v to VMware".

We have a remote site which has 3 physical machines. We want to migrate those physical machines to virtual machines however I’m confused on what platform I need at this location to run these VMs. Can I run Hyper-V Server 2012 and managed with our SCVMM 2008 R2? Or do I need server 2012 standard with Hyper-v?

Windows 2012 Datacenter Edition Hyper-V Licensing

Hello,

I would like to clarify the "Unlimited VMs" licensing for Windows 2012 Datacenter Edition Hyper-V.  Does this mean you can host an unlimited amount of Windows VMs without having to purchase Windows Server product licenses? Doug

Harden drive share on Win8 host to HyperV XP client

I am developer running Win8 Pro, and have merged and moved my XP Mode VHD to Hyper-V.  I do not have a DC on the network.  Some of the products I support require a 16-bit development tool.  On Win7 (XP Mode) I kept the source code on the host drive and was able to easily access it from the guest OS.

I'd like to do the same on Win8/Hyper-V.  So far, I have replicated the functionality by sharing the root of the drive to Everyone with the Full Control permission.  I would prefer to not expose this drive in this manner.  I have tried mapping to the admin share (\\hostpc\d$) with the host user credentials (yes, I am an admin).

  1. If I do not have an existing mapping to the "Everyone" share the I cannot get past the credentials dialog - it simply disappears and then reappears.  I am using a FQN user name (hostpc\me)
  2. If I do have an existing mapping, then I receive an error that the network folder is currently mapped using a different user name and to disconnect that and retry.

I also tried creating a user on the Win8 machine with the same name/password as the XP guest user, but no joy (thought that sort of thing used to work).

The above scenarios were using the Hyper-V connect to VM.  I also established an RDC to the guest, configuring it to use my local drive in the session.  This does give me access to the drive in Explorer, but I cannot figure out how to map it as a drive letter for use in the 16-bit IDE.

So, can I either:

  1. With RDC, map a drive letter to the host drive that is exposed to the guest?
  2. Share the drive (yes, I'm afraid I need several top-level folders so need to map the root) with permissions restricted to an authenticated user?

Best,

Scott

Have to continually restart VMMS to create VMs - Not granted requested login type?

Hello,

We are running Hyper-V on 2012 Standard, Randomly when I go to create a VM it will give me this exact error:

New-VM : The operation failed.
The Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service encountered an unexpected error: Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type
at this computer. (0x80070569).

In the event logs I get 16000 & 16010 and until I restart VMMS service I cannot create a VM. I'm logged in as a Domain Admin and my account was given access to Login as Batch Job.. Anyone had this issue or perhaps have some insight on it?

Hyper-V on Win 2012 DC - Live Migration fails with error "Virtual machine migration operation for failed at migration source

Hi,

We have setup a Hyper-V cluster on five Windows Server 2012 DC hosts.  Out of the five hosts, 3 have identical hardware (same processor/chipset, same NICs etc.) and the remaining 2 have identical hardware.  The issue we are facing now is that we are not able to move the guests between these hosts using Live Migration.  Please note that we are trying to move the guests only between the identical hosts.  The errors we encounter when we try moving are as below:

However, moving hosts using Quick Migration is always successful.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Live migration of 'Virtual Machine TestVM' failed.

Virtual machine migration operation for 'TestVM' failed at migration source 'MBHVH03'. (Virtual machine ID C5D3C4BB-1C16-480F-8596-AEFC7A1A79A7)

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to establish a connection for a Virtual Machine migration with host 'MBHVH01': The specified target is unknown or unreachable (0x80090303).

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to authenticate the connection for a Virtual Machine migration at the source host: The specified target is unknown or unreachable (0x80090303).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Any suggestions on what could be causing this?

Amjad.

How to Fix a Corrupted Hyper-V VHD File

Hyper-V 2012 and Processor Compatability

$

Hi,

Im in the process of designing a Hyper-V 2012 cluster setup.

We just got our new SAN and the plan is that the new cluster will use SMB3 storage and we will use live migration. 2 new hosts will be ordered for the cluster. But we also have several resently bought hosts all with 2 six core cpus and lots of ram and i would like to include these in the new cluster setup. For live migration to function i will have to enable processor compatability.

My question is, how will this impact the performance on the hosts? i know how the feature works and i know how it will limit the features on cpu's on the newest hosts, im just trying to find some numbers/stats on how this can/will impact performance.

Hello all

I am currently finishing settin up a new env. for  a customer, everything is ok except backup, i am currently backinup host and 3 vm on it.

i am receiving the following errors everytime the backup starts :

filter manager error id 3

volsnap error id 27

disk i/o error at logical bloc etc.. id 153

is everyone experiencing this ?

I already tried everything related to these knowns errors since they are quite  famous in the windows history .. but no luck at the moment.

they only occurs if vms are on, if powered off backup runs fine.

however even with these errors backups finishes and restores are ok.

The bad part is that they are all related to the shadow that backup is mounting everytime for the procedure. (dont tell me to chkdsk my lun :) )

Thanks

Regards
