Troubleshooting Slow LiveMigration between W2K12 DC Standalone Hyper-V hosts?

Hi all

I am troubleshooting slow LiveMigrations between Windows Server 2012 Datacenter (Standalone) Hyper-V hosts. All of them are HP ProLiant 3xx servers from 2009/2011 with DAS. When installing W2K12, we teamed all three GbE-NICs via Windows (New-NetbfoTeam, LoadBalancingAlgo HyperVPort and TeamingMode LACP). The servers are attached to a HP ProCurve switch, where the server ports are configured as members i an LACP-trunk.

Connectivity worked fine, but LiveMigration felt very slow. ("Slow" is currently a fuzzy term - basically based upon speed difference between copying a 40 GB VHD via SMB between the servers, and letting LiveMigration move a 40 GB server. With SMB, we achive about 100 MB/s - also here less than expected since we thought that multi-channeling would kick in...)

To narrow down possible error sources (basically Windows Teaming), I did the following on all three servers:

1. Removed one GbE NIC (NIC3) from the Team and moved the cable to a non-LACP port on the switch
2. Created a new vSwitch on this network adapter:

New-VMSwitch -name "vAllManagementTraffic" -SwitchType "External" -BandwidhReservationMode "Weight" -NetAdapterinterfaceDescription "NIC3-Management" - AllowManagement $False

3. Created vNICs visible to the management OS on top, with correct VLAN for LiveMigration and some QoS weight rules (LiveMigration should get 80% of the bw), and the correct IPs (not shown):

Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "vManagement" -SwitchName "vAllManagementTraffic"
Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "vLiveMigration" -SwitchName "vAllManagementTraffic"
Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -ManagementOS -VMNetworkAdapterName "vLiveMigration" -Access -VlanId 11
Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "vLiveMigration" -MinimumBandwidthWeight 80
Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "vManagement" -MinimumBandwidthWeight 20

Update: For the LiveMigration adapter, I added the *NdisDeviceType (value: 1) registry setting in order to turn off Windows Firewall.

4. Under Hyper-V settings I then restricted the IP-addreses that could be used for LiveMigration to the IP-adress given to the vLiveMigration vNIC.

The result: LiveMigrations are as slow as before.

Have I overlooked something important?
Do I have wrong LiveMigration speed expectations?
How can I monitor/measure current LiveMigration thruput for getting some exact numbers?

Can somebody point me in the correct direction on how to troubleshoot further?

Update: I forgot to add some links to posts that deal with similar problems - threat one and thread two were the most useful. The hints basically consist of the following:

  • Disable TCP Offload / RSS in NIC and OS (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951037) - Not tested yet
  • Dedicated NIC - OK
  • Check binding order - OK
  • QoS Management/iSCSI/LiveMigration - OK
  • Power Settings in BIOS and Power Plans in Windows - OK
  • Check in Resource Monitor if traffic is going thru the correct NIC - Not verified yet

Uninstall Hyper-V Extensible Virtual Switch?

Disable write cache on VHDX in Hyper-V DC guests.

I have a couple of DC's running Server 2012 as Hyper-V guest machines.  I have write caching disabled on the hosts RAID controller (no cache battery), but for some reason, I can't disable write caching on the VHDX virtual drives that the DC guest servers reside on.  This has caused me issues twice during extended overnight power outages that have caused unclean shutdowns of the physical server, corrupting AD databases on the guest servers.  I just spent four hours force-removing AD from one of the servers, rejoining, and fixing all the other associated issues due to corrupted AD databases.

How the heck do you disable write caching on the boot drive on a Hyper-V guest when the guest OS says the device does not allow the setting to be changed?  Oh, the VHDX is mounted as an ATA device.  Do I need to create a tiny VHDX to mount as an ATA device as a boot volume, and then install the OS on a SCSI mounted VHDX, or how else can I fix this problem?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

New Server Advice

Hello Everyone,

I am in of some advice , I am looking for a server for my house that will let me run both Hyper-V and Xen Server .. The reason behind this I need something I can play with in order to learn and expained my skills ..

I also need a server that will let me install both Windows Based and Linux Based OS's as well .. I know from my last job that Xen Server is picky about its chip set and if its not the right one you can only install one type of OS on the virtual machines ..

I am also sorry to say tring to be cheap about it too .. Any advice would be greatful ..

Thanks

Update : I also have right now a Hp ProLiant DL380 , I know its an older server and it needs Ram and bigger hard drives , but wasnt sure if it would work with my idea ..

Hyper-V 2012 WMI API - Getting VM State of a Snapshot

Hello,

Is there a way to determine the state the VM was in when a snapshot of the VM was taken?

I am looking at the Msvm_VirtualSystemSettingData class, but I see no such information there.

Thanks in advance,

How to Fix a Corrupted Hyper-V VHD File

Why are my Hyper-V servers disconnecting simultaneously from the network?

I have two Hyper-V servers (ver. 6.1.7600.16385) installed on Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise that intermittently disconnects from the network. Last two events happened on 18 December 2012 and 31 December 2012. Both Hyper-Vs and the servers that they host suddenly became unreachable through the network for a maximum duration of one minute, and automatically reconnect without any action.

I checked the Event Viewer on both servers, but could not find any indication of the source of the problem.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Hyper-V VM network problem after moving

I'm having some trouble with my new server so I decided to export my 2 VMs, re-install 2008 R2 and then import my VMs.  One VM worked fine but the other, which is the DC, had problems.  It had no network access and if I tried to open network settings the screen would hang.  The rest of the server was fine but I could not get into network settings.  Ipconfig showed no addresses for the server.  I tried deleting and recreating the virtual NICs but no matter what configuration I tried I got the same result.  I read somewhere that when moving VMs you should recreate the virtual networks before importing which I tried to do but maybe didn't get it right.  At any rate it didn't work so I restored the backup.  Any help would be appreciated.

I am getting errors in my system event log when backing up our Hyper-V cluster.  The errors refer to \??\Volume{fd68fa94-0219-11e0-8397-8781852cf4dc}

How do I determine which virtual machine this is refering to?

VM Integration Services

I am running Windows 7 Pro in a virtual machine under Windows 8 Pro Hyper-V Manager. On the VM From the Action Menu I can select “Insert Integration Services Setup Disk.” When I select it,  it opens up a virtual drive with a link “Install Hyper-V Integration Services.” What are those integration services? Why the VM needs them? I searched the help menu of the VM and did not find any answer. In this Forum I read a few questions about t Integration Services, but they don’t say what those services are. All the users were using Windows Servers and am using just Windows 8 Pro.

Extending Hyper-V Passthrough Volume on a Hyper-V Failover Cluster

I would like to know the best practice for extending a LUN and associated Windows partition structure on a Hyper-V 2.0 (R2 SP1) passthrough disk on a failover cluster. I have watched this done before and it seems fraught with issues, most notably having to rescan all nodes of the cluster to get the new LUN size to be recognized (the cluster seems to catch up after a couple of hours with its own scan). We also get IO errors on the MPIO when doing this.

On the same topic - is there an issue with doing an extension of a CSV and underlying LUN while online?

Thanks,

Dana

External network unreachable from Hyper-V VM - Win8

I'm trying to configure a Ubuntu 12.10 VM for development on a Lenovo W520. The solution I've attempted adds three virtual switches: one internal network for direct connections to the VM and two external, each bound to a NIC (Intel 82479LM, Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN). The internal network uses a static IP and I use it for local/X connections. The ethernet NIC also works for outbound connections from the VM.

But I cannot connect to wireless networks. I've tried normal and legacy adapters bound to the external network, tried disabling VMQ and IPsec task offloading, and verified that NIC teaming isn't enabled. My network administrator has disabled connection sharing.

When I bound the switch to the network driver, Hyper-V created a network bridge; the Wi-Fi connection now reports that it is "Enabled, Bridged" in the network connections control panel and the bridge (Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver) properties has that adapter (and only that adapter) checked. I'm uncertain why this was created, but am sternly warned not to change it.

When I attempt to acquire an IP address via DHCP from within the VM, it fails. It has been unable to connect on several different wireless networks. This makes some sense, because to the VM, it's just an ethernet card; I'm not clear how (or whether) it would use the configured credentials for the wireless device.

If there are best practices for this goal, I'd be happy to scrap this partial config to adopt sounder policies. I looked, but couldn't find solutions or even good tutorials on troubleshooting issues like this. I'd be grateful for any pointers, because the only strategy remaining to me is random changes.

Using iscsi initiator within a VM vs a passthrough disk, vs vhdx

0

With the advent of H-V verison 3 (2012) I think this quesion needs to be revisited.  I was told long ago (about a year and a half :) ), that it was frowned upon to use an iSCSI connection from within a child VM.  If the data was large (more than 2TB), then using a pass-though disk was perferred. You lost HA, live migraton, etc, but oh well. Now, things have definitely changed, but the matrix of determining the right answer is too much for me.  So I ask the gods of all Microsoft Knowledge, what is the current state of this question?  Can I (should I) use an iSCSI initiator in a VM to attach to iSCSI SAN storage?  Should I just convert the disk to a vhdx and gain all things good and holy that the MS gods want me to realize with a virtual environment?  Should I stick with pass-through because it still offers APPRECIABLY better performance (in my instance, I'm talking about file server storage, but we can assume for everyone's benefit that we might be talking about more robust performance needs)?  What say you?

Thanks,

DLovitt

Advice Needed

I am about to start a fairly large "Network Redesign" project and want to utilize Hyper-V to the fullest.  I have a number of  "Application Servers" that are involved and would like to get this all running on 4 physical machines.   I have researched some recommendations on this and have gotten slightly different results so I figured I would post here and see what comes back.

My question is this : Where should the DC role be installed?  What I am thinking (and have read) is that it is best to install AD and DNS on the physical machine with the HV Host role.  Then in each of the VM's to run the "Application Servers". If so, I was thinking on installing these roles on all 4 Physical Machines for failover, and then just distributing the Application Servers across the 4 evenly.

Does this sound like the best way, or should I just NOT join the Host Servers to the domain at all and then provide all services including AD, etc within a virtual machine?

Also, just from a topology standpoint these servers will be in a colo environment with the users only accessing the network via RDP (1 of the several App Servers that will be virtual).

How to crash dump a Guest running Windows 2008

Hi Folks,

I have a Windows 2008 VM running on Hyper-V (RTM) and I like to manually crash dump it.

Normally I would follow  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928839 but that is for Virtual Server 2005.

Can someone either point me to the right KB or give me instructions on how I can crash my VM ?

thanks & appreciated
Rgds,
Edwin.

Hi everybody, i'm with a problem and i need your help.

I'm using Hyper-V 2008 R1 and I have a guest VM running Windows Server 2008. This VM crashed and i need to boot it from the ISO to run the chkdsk command, but when i boot the VM all i get is a black screen and i'm not prompet to start the installation of the OS (all i need to do is open the command prompt from the installation screen).

Has anybody faced this issue?

Grant-VMConnectAccess

Experts,

Grant-VMConnectAccess - Grants a user or users access to connect to a virtual machine or machines.

As get-help didnt give much details, I am posting it here.

How should the end user access a VM if I have granted access using this commandlet?

HyperV Manager?

Cheers !
