Hyper-V 3.0 Host Isolation Response

$

Hi,

We are doing a Feature and stability test of HyperV 3.0  with VMM2012 SP1 Beta against existing Vmware Cluster.

We found one feature of interest in Vmware, "Host Isolation Response", where the VM on the isolated host will be left alone in the preset desired response. I was unable to find any such feature on Hyper-V directly.

Although a combination of clever networking and scripting can achieve this, which we are working on it.

Just wanted to check if anyone has managed to make something like this work ?

Thanks all.

Mellanox IPoIB and Hyper-V vSwitch

Hi,

We have couple of HP Blades (460 G1) running on HP 4x DDR Infiniband  Mezz HCA (dual port, 20 Gbps ). Now the blades are pretty old, but very much capable of running medium density Virtual machines with some RAM upgrade. ( VDI Anyone ??? )

I have been trying to have virtual machines communicate through a vSwitch that is running on an IPoIB interface on one of these ports. The HCA does not supports SR-IOV as per my knowledge and the host is running W2012 with mellanox VPI drivers version 4.2 . The VM traffic won't go through. The Host machine would happily communicate to any other IPoIB interface on network, but the VM  can communicate on all except the IPoIB based vSwitch.

Has anyone encountered this situation ?

I have found a feature , Header Data split that needs to be enabled ( please see https://www.openfabrics.org/ofa-documents/doc_download/510-ethernet-tunneling-over-ipoib.html    which states that an IPoIB cannot be slaved to NIC and that it expects IP packets from vSwitch, not ethernet)   for this to work. This is documented by mellanox in their VPI along with support for Hyper -v , but strangely missing in my Device properties upon instalation.

I have poured over ton's of documentation and forums, and it seems i am the only one trying this experiment.

It would be great if we can use these to run VirtualMachine traffic and not just as storage mounts. Would save us a lot of $$$ in buying new 10G switches for these old hardwares.

is it perfomance gain to install Hyper-v 2012 core partition on seperate raid 1 aray?

is it  perfomance gain to install Hyper-v 2012 core partition on raid 1 seperate aray instead of placing it on same aray with vhd virtual machines?

1.the storage aray dedicated for vm is 4 x 4TB 7200rpm on RAID 1+0  setup
2.the other option is place a seperate 2x 300GB 2.5 15k rpm Raid 1 setup dedictaed to root partition and page file
the os will be 2012 hyper v free , will i gain any perfomance gain by using option 2? i know that using option 1 is slightly better for redundancy...
i do not sure and cannot find any documentation about how much disk i/o does the system partition consume , any help will be apriciated.

Thanks!

Pass-Through disks coming up in different order after server reboot.

I have 1 Hyper-V server with 6 VMs on it.  Two of those VMs reference offline disks (pass-through) over an iSCSI connection to my SAN.  Once in a while, after a host reboot, the offline disks that are setup as pass-through initialize in the wrong order and my servers no longer are attached to the proper RAW storage.

I've looked around and haven't been able to come up with a solution so far because SCVMM2008 and Hyper-V manager will only allow you to select just the disk #.

Is there a way to pass the drive guids to keep this from happening?

I was running 2 x HP DL380 G6 with spec below:

Intel X5560 x 2 processor

64GB RAM

300GB SAS x 3 units with RAID 5

Dual Power Supply

HBA Dual Port card with 8GB

Server 2008 R2 Enterprise

HP SAN Storage MSA2024

Hyper V Clustering Role

TEAMING NIC PORT

The server was install 4 x Guest OS

1. Process Server (MSMQ)

2. SQL 2008 R2 Standard Database Server

3. SQL 2008 R2 Standard Database Server (Report)

4. Web service and Web Server

The Hyper V Guest servers was running fine, but I found that the problem was Virtual network no connectivity issue always happen. The triangle sign will appear to the server once or two in a month. I need to use Hyper V Manager to go in the server and do manually restart when it happen triangle sign on Network.

I also set the each servers restart daily every night at 3.00am. All the hyper V Guest and host was installed with latest windows update.

Anybody facing this kind of issue ? how to resolve it?

C Drive in Host Hyper-V 2008R2 server not allowing to copy Files to CSV due to C being smaller than the VHD

Hello guys,

I was trying to copy a template VHD from my store to the selected CSV. I got an error saying that there is no space remaining in the drive, but the CSV had the required space.

My configurations are as follows,

  • 5 Hyper-V Hosts\Nodes in cluster (All 2008R2)
  • 4 x 300GB CSVs
  • 2 x 800GB CSVs
  • All hosts have 100GB C Drives
  • The VHD template mentioned is 45GB

At the time of Copying,

  • Host used was Host-3
  • Host-3's C:\ had 30GB of free space (had a lot of unapplied updates)
  • I was copying to CSV-3 (disk number 3, this is a 800GB disk)
  • CSV-3 had approx. 200GB free

Now when I tried to copy the VHD I got that error. So I went to another node that had about 50+ GB of free space on the C drive and it copied to the CSV without any problems. I am having to do another such copy in the near future for another project this time the VHD's are sized at 200GB each and two to move to the CSV (The second 800GB CSV will be used for this, but all my node C drives are 100GB and lesser free space) my concern is will it complain again and the project will be a no-go as all my hosts are less than 100GB C drives.

Any assistance or experiences-workarounds will be greatly appreciated. Let me know if further information is needed.

The only issue that is close to mine is found at this location but it just touches on the subject but the answer is rather vague, or answers the question maybe.

HP NIC Teaming, Hyper-V, and Seemingly Random Connection Issues

Hello everyone. I have a bit of an issue with NIC teaming, HP hardware, and Hyper-V.

When a switch fails an a failover event is triggered I lose connectivity across several VMs. Now I have DL 580 G7s an we have added to quad port Intel NIC cards. Two of the adapters are teamed and presented to the guest OS as a single adapter for their LAN connection. The other adapters (used only for iSCSI connections) never give an issue.

My fix in the past has been to shut down the guest VM, remove the NIC from the VM configuration, power up an back down the VM, re-add the NIC, reconfigure it, and everything is good. it can then migrate across all the nodes without a problem. As you can guess this is quite painful and I do not want to have to do this any more.

Here's what I tried today that also worked (after I migrated a machine to another node and the NIC lost connectivity and I migrated it back to the originating node) - I shut down the guest OS, live migrated it over, then started it up and it worked just fine.

There seems to be some sort of issue with the NIC team driver being presented to the guest OS somehow. When the VM loses connectivity it can still ping the host OS an any other guest VMs on that node.

I have updated the NIC drivers and teaming software (as well as all the system firmware) to the latest version and played around with the config to no avail.

Has anyone else been able to solve this issue? Thanks!

Ubuntu 12.10 GPT partition >2TB not working

Hi!

Hyper-V on 2012.

I've got a Ubuntu, 12.10, server installation which i try to add some storage to. I've created 64GB harddrive (VHDX) as the 1st drive. And then a 2nd drive 4TB (VHDX). Thin.prov on both.

Creating and formating: Using gdisk, parted or gparted (livecd) on ubuntu I'm not able to partition, GPT, and initiate a filesystem on the the large VHDX.

Is there a problem with Hyper-V 2012 and drives (VHDX) >2TB when used by guests?

Edit: :) Typo in title... Ubunut...

Dynamic VHD Enquiry

Having a dynamic VHD. (See properties below) The inside size of the Guest OS is 64GB and max to 74GB. Will that mean if the size and the blank space reach 80GB I will be stuck? Is compacting a VHD safe? I don't use any snapshots.

Hi,

First i'm a home user who like to experiment a lot.

My question is when i'm running hyper-v server and the VM (unRAID) with a physical hard disk directly to a virtual machine says to spin down a drive will hyper-v server spin down the drive?

Thanks for your time

How to set up delayed autostart of virtual machines when the owner hyper-V-server fails

$

Hi,

we have 4 nodes in our Hyper-V Win2k8 R2-cluster. We're using VLAN trunks to distribute different network into each VM. The storage for virtual machines (c:\ClusterStorage) is hooked up using iSCSI.

Critical VMs are configured to autostart if one of the HyperV-nodes fails. Anyway, there are certain services (servers) that has to boot up prior to other servers, f.ex SQL-server, in order to make some services work seamlessly. I'm able to find settings for delayed autostart on each Hyper-V-node when the node performs a cold start. Unfortunately there does not seem to be any settings (in GUI) for configuring delayed autostart when one hyper-v-node fails and the VM changes owner.

Is there any way to solve this?

Thanks in advance.

Intel Virtualization Technology Directed i/o (VTd)

Hi,

Running SRV2008 Hyper-V R2 and I enabled "Data Execution Prevention" and "Intel Virtualization Technology (VTx)". Hyper-V runs as expected. In the BIOS I saw this option "Intel Virtualization Technology Directed I/O (VTd)": should I enable this option for Hyper-V?

Thx,

Dirk

Getting error 0x80070003, 'the vm configuration ... is no longer accessible'

I am running Windows 2008, Standard with Production release of Hyper-C (version 6.0.6001.18016).  In the event log, I am getting a series of errors, event ID 4096
The Virtual machines configuation GUID at "location" is no longer accessible:  The system cannot find the path specified. (0x80070003)

I initially specified the location of the VM's to be under D:\Hyper-V Drives.  At one point, I DID delete the vhd drives associated with the VM.  Subsequently, Hyper-V was uninstalled and re-installed, and I did not specify the VM for the deleted machine (it had been deleted, right?))

Then I started getting the errors in the event log.   I looked in the Virtual Machines directory and found the associated GUID's (both as a file.xml and as a subdirectory with two files), and deleted both the file and the subdirectory associated with the GUID producing the error.  Just for fun, I also rebooted the parent thinking that the error messages would stop.  They have not!  I am still getting the error messages for the 3 or 4 vm's (about every hour)

I have run regedit and looked for the guids and could not find them via a search.

The question is:   HOW DO I INFORM HYPER-V TO STOP GENERATING THE ERROR MESSAGES?

Access denied when starting VM.

I checked permissions on the VHD and I set them very loosely, everyone has full control, system has full control, domain users have full control. This is Windows 8 Enterprise Hyper-V.

Desktop motherboards/CPUs that work with Hyper-V

I would like to build a test system using a desktop board and CPU to use with Hyper-V. I found a prior thread here that ended a few months back where some people had partial success with an E6550 CPU and boards such as the AsusP5E-VM DO or Intel DQ35J t. I have done quite a bit of searching and haven't found a lot of success stories. I also looked at socket AM2+ motherboards using a Phenom CPU.

I contacted Gigabyte and they said the BIOS of all  their current boards supports AMD-V hardware virtualization if a suitable CPU is used. So a board such as the Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H with a B3 stepping Phenom could be a candidate.

So my question is has anyone had good success with the above combinations or others when Hyper-V is installed?

ICS works with WiFi and 3g Modem; does not work with on board lan?

Hi Guys,

I am trying to get a hyper-v windows 8 configuration set-up with my laptop that all hyper-v machines use a internal virtual switch; that I can elect to have it share the internet on any internet connection I can get on the laptop.

All the machines use 192.168.137.1 as the gateway for my laptop host and I enumerate them like 192.168.137.5 and .10 so on.

I can follow these articles for enabling internet connection sharing on the WiFi and Serria Wireless 3G modem connection for my virtaul internal switch.

But I can't see to make a on-board lan host the internet connection sharing for my virtual machines using the internal shared switch!!!

I dont see a reason to use anyhting but internal virtual swtich with a vm on windows 8 laptop as I am on the move from coffee shop to the board room etc...

Hyper-V on Win 2012 DC - Live Migration fails with error "Virtual machine migration operation for failed at migration source

Hi,

We have setup a Hyper-V cluster on five Windows Server 2012 DC hosts.  Out of the five hosts, 3 have identical hardware (same processor/chipset, same NICs etc.) and the remaining 2 have identical hardware.  The issue we are facing now is that we are not able to move the guests between these hosts using Live Migration.  Please note that we are trying to move the guests only between the identical hosts.  The errors we encounter when we try moving are as below:

However, moving hosts using Quick Migration is always successful.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Live migration of 'Virtual Machine TestVM' failed.

Virtual machine migration operation for 'TestVM' failed at migration source 'MBHVH03'. (Virtual machine ID C5D3C4BB-1C16-480F-8596-AEFC7A1A79A7)

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to establish a connection for a Virtual Machine migration with host 'MBHVH01': The specified target is unknown or unreachable (0x80090303).

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to authenticate the connection for a Virtual Machine migration at the source host: The specified target is unknown or unreachable (0x80090303).

Any suggestions on what could be causing this?

Unable to connect due to A security database on the server does not have computer account for this workstation trust relationship

Senario is :- I have 2 DC's running, 1 Physical server & another is Hyper V server on the storage. My SQL server i.e. Hyper V is also running from the same storage. Now the accidentally we had given the same name of my SQL server to another Hyper V image on same server. When tried to stop that Hyper V image it had restarted. later we had removed that Hyper-V image from the Hyper V manager. But It causes the issue of as soon as we had changed the duplicate name & later deleted the Hyper V image it had got removed from the Active directory Users & Computers.

Now while accessing my existing SQL server it gives me below error

"A security database on the server does not have computer account for this workstation trust relationship"

Now, How to restore this server name. I need to access my SQL server for which I unable to access it through local admin as well.

Tried Sol'n:-

1) Manually added the machine name on DC but again it has same error coz it will not allow like this.

Does anyone know how to resolve this? Help will be appreciated.
