Netsvc disconnects and reconnects my Hyper V Virtual Machine NIC card

0
0

Hyper V OS: Windows 2008 Datacenter

VM in question: Server 2008 R2 SP1

So, I'm having an issue wherein my NIC card on my Virtual Machine is momentarily disconnected, interrupting an important service that must be manually restarted. This happens quite intermittently, weekly or bimonthly, but it is annoying and disruptive. Netsvc is the service, and the message is that the card disconnected, then another netsvc event for the reconnect.

I turned the powercfg.cpl settings on both HyperV host and VM to High Performance mode (a solution I found online) and still have the issue.

The thread "Microsoft Virtual Machine Bus Network Adapter keeps disconnecting" (link withheld due to the settings on this forum) appears to partially describe the issue, but the hotfixes listed by Mr. AlessandroCardoso are not compatible with my Hyper V or VM, so neither are valid (obviously not the 2003 one) in my case.

The hyper V integration tools are installed.

Problem Creating a Virtual Switch

Server: Hyper-V 2012
Mode: Workgroup
Network: Dual Onboard NICs
IP: DHCP (Temporary, during staging)

Client: Win8 Pro (on same subnet)
Mode: Workgroup

Per this thread I finally managed to get an administrative connection to Hyper-V.

Next up, I attempted to create a Virtual Switch. I don't know whether the attempt was successful, as I was remoting into the Win8 machine at the time. All I know is that the connection was interrupted and the Hyper-V machine is now no longer visible on the network. A reboot of the server didn't help.

After some brief reading on the subject, I'd decided to use SR-IOV. Hopefully I'm correct: I'm under the impression that SR-IOV provides better performance when running multiple VMs under one physical NIC. Correct me please if I'm mistaken.

I'll be traveling to the console in a few hours. I only thought that in the meantime someone might have an idea as to what may have gone wrong so I'll know what to look for when I get there.

Thanks,
Jeff Bowman

What are the benefits of installing Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V over the bare metal installation of Hyper-V3 (Hypervisor).

Advice Needed

I am about to start a fairly large "Network Redesign" project and want to utilize Hyper-V to the fullest.  I have a number of  "Application Servers" that are involved and would like to get this all running on 4 physical machines.   I have researched some recommendations on this and have gotten slightly different results so I figured I would post here and see what comes back.

My question is this : Where should the DC role be installed?  What I am thinking (and have read) is that it is best to install AD and DNS on the physical machine with the HV Host role.  Then in each of the VM's to run the "Application Servers". If so, I was thinking on installing these roles on all 4 Physical Machines for failover, and then just distributing the Application Servers across the 4 evenly.

Does this sound like the best way, or should I just NOT join the Host Servers to the domain at all and then provide all services including AD, etc within a virtual machine?

Also, just from a topology standpoint these servers will be in a colo environment with the users only accessing the network via RDP (1 of the several App Servers that will be virtual).

Extending Hyper-V Passthrough Volume on a Hyper-V Failover Cluster

0

I would like to know the best practice for extending a LUN and associated Windows partition structure on a Hyper-V 2.0 (R2 SP1) passthrough disk on a failover cluster. I have watched this done before and it seems fraught with issues, most notably having to rescan all nodes of the cluster to get the new LUN size to be recognized (the cluster seems to catch up after a couple of hours with its own scan). We also get IO errors on the MPIO when doing this.

On the same topic - is there an issue with doing an extension of a CSV and underlying LUN while online?

Thanks,

Dana

Moving VHDs to a Storage Pool

I am looking to convert my hosts to Windows Server 2012 and use storage pools over the current RAID that I have.  The hosts are direct attached storage and the VMs have VHDs that currently sit on the RAID.  I know how to move the VHDs off the current RAID, and when I am set up again with Storage Pools, how would I move the VHDs into the storage pool?  Then how would tell Hyper-V Manager where the vhds are to use them?

MSFT_NetFirewallRule - No objects found with the property 'Display Group'

Hi !

I deployed 2 (free) Hyper-V Servers 2012 form my customer. He has AD but no Windows 8 so I have to manage from my own PC (not from domain).

I used guide : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj647785.aspx  (Manage Hyper-V Server 2012 Remotely)

but

Using the command Enable-NetFirewallRule -DisplayGroup "Remote Administration" gives the error:

"No MSFT_NetFirewallRule objects found with the property 'Display Group' equal to 'Remote Management'

Hyper-V Dynamic memory, Driver Locked

Hello All,

I've been wondering about the following.

I have 2 Dell R910 (Windows Server 2008R2 SP1) machines as my Hyper-V host machines, with around 40-50 VMs running on it. For most of my servers I've enabled dynamic memory, but on some of these machines I've seen the following:

For some reason this machine running Remote Desktop Services (with Web Access) is using around 3.8GB of memory.

Processes list only a fraction of the actual Memory being used.

But RAMmap shows that 2.5GB is being used by Kernel Drivers. From what I've read this might be the balooning effect of the dynamic memory. However, the RAM usage was the same yesterday evening (12h before I took these screenshots), when no one was actually working on this server.

I've seen this happen on multiple of my guest machines, the machines are running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Datacenter Edition.

Can anyone explain to me why it is doing this?

Thank you.

Kind Regards,

Tom

Networking configuration - coming from vSphere

Hi All,

I'm making the jump and migrating our environment from vSphere to Hyper-V 3.0. So far, most things have made sense in terms of what their equivalent commands/configurations are between vSphere and Hyper-V, but I'm really baffled by networking. Here's how I have things set up in vSphere: 2 NICs teamed for LAN traffic and 2 NICs in MPIO configuration dedicated to iSCSI traffic. On the LAN side, I've got a VM that has to see VLAN 210 (our voicemail server), but the rest of the VMs should only see VLAN 200. I also do my management over this network. On the iSCSI side, a few VMs need to access this network (to do direct-to-SAN backups and such), but by and large most are not connected to it. Here's how vSphere portrays it:

I'm at a loss as to how to configure something similar on the Windows side. I've made a team, but beyond that I don't know what to do. Where do I set up virtual switches? Where do I create networks inside these switches? How do I apply VLANs? What happens if I Live Migrate a VM from one host to another? How does it know which networks it gets? We have VMM 2012 SP1 Beta running, too - should I be doing this configuration inside that?

Thanks!

Disable Write Caching on a Virtual HD ATA Device

Hi!

We have a Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V cluster. The VHDX files is stored on a FC connected EVA P6300 SAN.

When I try to disable Write Cache on the disk I get an error saying "Windows could not change the write-caching setting for the device. Your device might not support the feature or changing the setting". This is a Windows Server 2008 R2 guest.

On the guests running on a VMware ESX(i) x.x installation, this is not an issue. The guest is stored on the same SAN, but on other Vdisks of course.

Guest VM additions is version 6.2.9200.16384

Update: Write Cache is disabled on the storage connected to the Hyper-V host.

Anyone?

I have installed Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Evaluation, am trying to create virtual disk using wmi classes with WSMAN soap call, the same soap call is working in windows server 2008 r2, but it fails in windows server 2012 Data Center.

Also i cross verified in Serivces.msc, and found that Hyper-V Image Management service" is not available in windows server 2012 Data center whereas available in windows server 2008r2

Please could any one guide me how to enable  Hyper-V Image Management service in "window server 2012 DataCenter" or any other setup needs to install.

Guest VM failover cluster on Hyper-V 2012 Cluster does not work across hosts

0

Hi all,

We are evaluating Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012, and I have bumped in to this problem:
I have a Exchange 2010SP2 DAG installed on 2 vms in our Hyper-V cluster (a DAG forms a failover cluster, but does not use any shared storage). As long as my vms are on the same host, all is good. However, if I live migrate or shutdown-->move-->start one of the guest nodes on another pysical host, it loses connectivity with the cluster. "regular" network is fine across hosts, and I can ping/browse one guest node from the other. I have tried looking for guidance for Exchange on Hyper-V clusters but have not been able to find anything.

According to the Exchange documentation this configuration is supported, so I guess I'm asking for any tips and pointers on where to troubleshoot this.

regards,

Trond

Hyper-V guest shows more free space than it actually has

0
0
The disk management on the virtual server itself shows that it has 32GB free out of 98GB total hard drive space. However, when I connect to disk management on the physical Hyper-V host, it shows the volume to have only 4GB free. Why is there this discrepancy?

I should mention that the volume is stored on a SAN that is managed by our datacenter. Their technicians do not see anything wrong with the storage or the LUN itself. So, I'm without any hint at this point. Any clues would be much appreciated!

Hyper-V causing "stuttering" on Windows 8 Pro

0

When I'm running a Hyper-V VM (which I run most of the time) that is set to use 8GB of RAM, occasionally my mouse will experience "stuttering" or lag.  It can happen multiple times in a row, and sometimes is spaced out over hours.

Machine specifications:

Windows 8 Pro

i7-2500

16GB RAM

nVidia GeForce 470GTX

Hyper-V VM is on a secondary SATA drive that is only used for Hyper-V

Hyper-V VM is using 8GB fixed (another one is using 8GB min, 12GB max -- not running at the same time of course) with 2 vCPUs and two VHDX's, fixed.
