I have a server 2008r2 as a PDC. I would like to achieve the following but isn't sure if it's possible.

Our server has 2 physical NIC card only one being used at the moment.

1. I want to deploy a virtual machine to use the 2nd NIC on a separate network

2. Share a folder on the host machine with the VM.

The purpose if the VM is to connect to an FTP site to send an receive files

Hyper-V 2008R2 Host Isolation Response

$

Hi,

We have a hyper-v cluster with FC storage. Regarding ethernet networking we want to set the host isolation response to "leave powered on", like in a vmware vcenter cluster. How can we do this?

The question does not pertain to storage/iSCSI/NAS or NFS.

The scenario is this:

We want to change our core switch, but if we do, as soon as a hyper-v host looses ethernet on its NICs, it powers off the VMs. We want to not power off the VMs, but leave them running.

Live migration with pass-through disk

Hi

Is it possible to do a Live Migration (on Hyper-V 2008 R2) with VM that has only pass-through disk (for OS an data) - conf and swap file is on a different volume (CSV). When we try to do LM, it failed saying Live Migration failed.

If we configure VM that has bootable hard drive on a VHD (CSV volume) and additional hard drive configured as pass-through Live Migration is succesfully.

So as far as I see VM must have system partition on non-pass-through disk that LM is succesful or am I wrong ?

Thank you in advance

Mike

Copy files from cluster node to another cluster node on local disks copy over CSV and LM network???

Hi,

Is is normal that files copy from one cluster node local disk to another cluster node local disk transfers over the CSV and LM network and not through the management network?

Love the speed though as the files get copied above the 1gbps speed.

Thanks

David

What version of OpenGL is supported on Server 2012 Hyper-V VMs? Can it please support 1.5?

Hi

Our application is being updated from supporting version 1.0 of OpenGL to version 1.5.  Many video cards today support 4.2, so PM believes 1.5 is a safe choice, as it is from 2003.

As usual though, the test team's needs are not taken under advisement, as Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 SP1 only supports OpenGL 1.1.

We have a Dell R710 Server and given its shape and power supply, can't add in an PCIEx16 card.  Dropping $15,000 on a QuadroPlex might work, if 2012 supports OpenGL 1.5, with or without  RemoteFX.  I ain't getting the money until I can prove it works.

Can anyone tell me?

We are using an exe from this site to test

http://www.realtech-vr.com/glview/download.php

use at your own risk, it is not my exe.

I am so done with the days of people thinking testers can test with a production machine, or in some dusty lab by installing an os every day.

Thanks!

Newbie question - is virtualisation right/possible for this client

$

I have a client running several Windows 2008 servers (some 2008 some 2008 R2). I have a budget to replace one of the older servers that is mainly running Goldmine in a full SQL environment, plus a few smaller applications that also use SQL.

The client is keen to try virtualization, essentially as a way of being able to bring the applications up quickly on an alternative server. I do have an almost idle domain controller on the network that's running Windows Server 2008 R2 and I'm thinking this could be a 'disaster recovery' server should the new server go down.

I can obviously spec the new server to be suitable for virtualization. Can I implement virtualization on an existing server in the domain and then have it 'ready' to take over should the main server fail.

Apologies for the basic question but this is new to me.

To John Howard: Win8 => HV 2012

Hi John (or some other kind soul who might know the answer)

We're pressed for time in trying to evaluate a network upgrade to Hyper-V 2012 running Server 2012 Essentials in a VM. We're currently running an old CentOS PDC amid a hodge-podge of physical WinXP 'servers' and we'd like to consolidate.

Our trouble is that we can't get past first base. Since Hyper-V will be standalone we have to run it in workgroup mode, which in turn is giving us all kinds of fits and headaches connecting to it from a Win8 Pro client machine (also workgroup).

The worst of the lot is the Logical Disk Manager problem. Hyper-V Manager can at least connect, but not without an error message (can't recall it just now but will send it upon request).

How close are you to finishing your HVRemote script update? Since we haven't made a purchase we can't get support and we're loathe to buy a pro incident just so we can complete an evaluation.

I've Binged and Googled 'til my fingers are bleeding and I'm not finding ANYTHING specific to 2012 and not 2008.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jeff Bowman

CSV Basis

Hello everyone,

I've run a Hyper-V cluster for 3 months and still not clear about the behavior of CSV. Would you give some advies on below questions?

1. Can I simply create folders and copy files to the CSV folder?

The scenario is that I've been migrating dozens of VMware VM to Hyper-V enviromnent. The built-in V2V process in SC2012 is slow. 10 GB per hour. And that's to the provisioned space size, not data size nor vmdk file size in VMFS partion. So deleting data, defragment and coverting to dynamic disk didn't help.

Instead, some free Vmdk2Vhd tools are much quicker. So what I want to do is copying VMDK to the CSV owner server, running Vmdk2Vhd, then copying VHD to C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1. But wait, will that damage the CSV volumne?

2. Can I mount a CSV LUN to a un-clustered Hyper-V server?

We are talking about DR. My server room is on fire and all hosts and SAN are gone. Luckly, we have a replicated SAN in the branch office 30 kilometers away. But there's only one server with Hyper-V role enabled. Can I simply mount the LUN(CSV disk) to the stand alone Hyper-V, then boot up all VMs?

=====================================

Well I did more search about the first question. Looks like I can copy any file to a CSV but only below files can be stored safely. And they can only be accessed by Hyper-V or they may be corrupted at any time.

Filename extensions associated with Cluster Shared Volumes

Hyper-V uses files with the following filename extensions:

  • .vhd
  • .avhd
  • .vsv
  • .xml
  • .bin
  • .iso
  • .vfd
  • .exp

Cluster Shared Volumes should not be used to store files for any applications, features, or roles other than Hyper-V. Only Hyper-V is supported to use these files. Using these files from other applications, features, or roles is not supported.

Hi there!

Ive setup small lab with domain controller and two hosts with Hyper-V role. OS - Win2012. Hosts are member of domain.

During installation i`ve enabled live migration with CredSSP. Now im trying to migrate VM to another host but couldnt select target folder. Select window shows the message: "No items match your search".

Any ideas how to fix it?

Using iscsi initiator within a VM vs a passthrough disk, vs vhdx

$

With the advent of H-V verison 3 (2012) I think this quesion needs to be revisited.  I was told long ago (about a year and a half :) ), that it was frowned upon to use an iSCSI connection from within a child VM.  If the data was large (more than 2TB), then using a pass-though disk was perferred. You lost HA, live migraton, etc, but oh well. Now, things have definitely changed, but the matrix of determining the right answer is too much for me.  So I ask the gods of all Microsoft Knowledge, what is the current state of this question?  Can I (should I) use an iSCSI initiator in a VM to attach to iSCSI SAN storage?  Should I just convert the disk to a vhdx and gain all things good and holy that the MS gods want me to realize with a virtual environment?  Should I stick with pass-through because it still offers APPRECIABLY better performance (in my instance, I'm talking about file server storage, but we can assume for everyone's benefit that we might be talking about more robust performance needs)?  What say you?

Thanks,

DLovitt

Is it better to turn on Maintenance mode before installing windows updates?

I'm running 2008 R2.. just wondering if that is good to do?

I thought you could just turn off the VMs, then install patches, and reboot.

Odd Hyper-V problem on a server running IIS

$

I have a problem trying to connect to a new VM on a Windows 2008R2 server with IIS and HYPER-V roles installed.  The server's primary role is running IIS.  This is the first VM on the server.  When I run the Hyper-V Manager and create a new Virtual Machine all seems well.  Once I try to connect though I receive the following message with a prompt for Username and Password:

Your system administrator does not allow the use of default credentials to log on to the remote computer localhost127.0.0.1 because the identity is not fully verified.

I have tried every username and password I have, including localhost/administrator and null for the password, but nothing work.  I have also tried changing the networking settings and removing it completely.

I have adjusted the local Group Policy settings described on the forum and others, but nothing seems to allow me to connect to the VM I am trying to create.

Performance difference 7,2 RPM or 10 RPM disks

$

Hi,

I have done some reading on disk speeds and Hyper-V/VMWare.
This recommendation always seems to come back: The faster the better, and ensure you have enough cache. This is a nice theoretical answer for someone
that doesn’t need to pay the hardware… :-) What is the practical difference in Hyper-V when working with 7,2 K RPM, 10 K RPM or 15 K RPM disks? Are the
systems/applications where you really need this, or is this generally a nice to have? Faster disk speeds means generally smaller sizes and are more expensive...
Is this worth it?

When I did some calculations for the W2008R2 Hyper V platform about 3-4 years ago, Microsoft generally advised 2 virtual servers per core. And memory is the main parameter for provisioning. Is this still valid? Again, I am looking on a practical answer from experience, more than a theoretical one.

Thanks again!

I have two hyper-v hosts. I have one Virtual machine that is replicated from one to another Hyper-v host. I have shutdown  Hyper-V machine prior rebooting hyper-v hosts. (Windows update).. After reboot i found out that Machine is showing that replication is paused, but when i tried to resume  replication, it fails at 98%. Error that I get is :

In Hyper-V Server, how can one determine the process that has captured a COM port.

$

I have been unsuccessful in determining the process that has captured COM1 on a Hyper-V Server 2012 host.  I have copied processmon.exe to the server and used the FIND function to search for 'serial' in the DLLs with no result.  I was not able to get portmon.exe to run.  Other than VTUtilities, the server is only patched.

The BIOS shows the physical serial port as COM1 on the standard IRQ and address and COM2 being a virtual port and also on it's standard IRQ and address.

Any tools or insight is appreciated.

Quick Question involving External Networks, Hyper-V and NICs

$

Is it possible to have a host machine running a VM in Hyper-V and both of them using the same NIC for an external network? This is purely for developmental purposes and not running production software. It seems like it is, from what I've seen. I'd just like some clarifications before installing Hyper-V.

The overall goal is to have the host machine and VM be all on the same network / sub-net and visible to each other.

Moving to Hyper-V; Questions

Hi all

I am currently just starting to plan out 2013. That planning includes new hardware and a hard look at implementing Hyper-V. I am just now getting my feet wet concerning virtualization and have some questions I am hoping to get answered. Our server environment is fairly simple - Windows Server 2003, no clustering, strictly file services, Exchange 2003, Terminal Server, SQL 2005 and various other apps (such as Blackberry, Antivirus, etc.)

What I would like to know is what can or should/shouldn't be virtualized and what should I consider prior to doing so. For example: Exchange 2003 - can you virtualize this without issues or should a new VM running 2010 be implemented and phased in. I have heard differing responses to Exchange 2003 running in a VM. Our main DC's are currently file and print servers - plan to create new 2012 VM's for the DC's and separate 2012 VM's for the file and print servers and just move the roles, shares, etc. What about Terminal Server - ok to run that in a VM? Caveats? The other app's I am not so worried about, I can move them into VM's if I so choose without much fuss.

Thanks!

Brandon
