Enable replication failed - Hyper-V is not in a state to accept replication on the Replica server for virtual machine 'Servername'

Hello,

I have two Windows 2012 Servers with Hyper-V installed. I have previously used replication for one of the virtual machines but had to turn it off momentarily for making some disk adjustments. Now I am trying to enable replication again, but is met with the error:

Enabling replcation failed

Hyper-V failed to enable replication.

Hyper-V is not in a state to accept replication on the replica server for virtual machine 'Servername'

Under the details an Virtual machine ID is listed, and using this ID I can find the replication files from the previous replication (under \Virtual Hard Disks\Hyper-V Replica\Virtual hard disks\<ID>\ and under \Virtual Hard Disks\Hyper-V Replica\Virtual Machines\<ID>.

Has anyone run into this before?
Maybe I should get rid of the old replica files and try to replicate anew?
Or perhaps an good old reboot might do the trick :P

Thankful for any insight.

Server 2012 - Hypervisor not Running

$

I've had a Dell Poweredge T410 running Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V quite happily for quite some time.

Yesterday, I upgraded (as opposed to a clean install) to Windows Server 2012 Standard.

When I now attempt to start a virtual machine I get an error telling me that the machine cannot be started because the hypervisor is not running.

I've checked the BIOS and all is well and I've also ran 'bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype auto'  I've confirmed that the BCD hypervisor launch type  is listed as 'auto'

If I restore back to 2008 R2 all works well so I'm guessing that it's a 2012 issue.

When I upgraded my Dell Poweredge T300 test server all worked well.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Many thanks.

Guests stuck on reboot

Hello,

I'm currently running a test environment with Hyper-V Server running on a Dell PowerEdge 2950 with a few 2003 and 2003R2 guests. Whenever the guests reboot for updates (windows update set to automatically restart on a specified time), they get stuck at "Windows is shutting down..." indefinately. That is, until I connect to the host machine with Hyper-V monitor and open their console. When I do that, I see the "Windows is shutting down..." message for a split second, then the machine reboots. The last message in the eventlog of the guests is that the eventlog service has stopped, minutes after the update reboot had started, so it does not appear to be an issue with a stuck service on the guest, but rather with the Hyper-V host not processing the reboot or something until you open the guest's console.

How can I solve this?

Windows 2008 R2 with Hyper-V losing network connection

I have a Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise Server with HyperV. I created a Virtual Machine running Windows 2008 R2 Standard.
I have a second physical computer running Windows 2008 Enterprise, where I opened 2 command prompts; from one command prompts I run ping -t <Win2008 R2 host> and from the other one I run ping -t <Win2008 R2 VM>. The 2 ping get the expected responses in less than 1 ms

From the Win2008 R2 VM I run wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backuptarget:\\<Win2008 server>\Share\

Pretty soon after the backup starts, the pings start failing: while there are some successful responses (some of them after quite long time, like 1500 ms), most of the returns are either Request timed out or Destination unreachable !
On the VM, wbadmin was able to find all files (~72K) and it repeatedly displays Found <72k> Files (the same number).
I could also see that the VHD files on the target were slowly growing but the pings did not improve at all. The backup failed after about one and a half hour.

I have disabled the TCP chimney and RSS on all 3 OSes hoping that this fixes the problem but it does not.

It seems like the problem is caused by the virtual adapter created by Hyper-V .
I removed that adapter (from Hyper-V network management), then stopped Hyper-V and I ran wbadmin to backup the host's system state to the same network share (as in the original test, from VM) and it looks like the network connection between the 2 computers is stable; I did not get not even one request timed out.

The computers are clean (installed short time ago) with no other software installed. They have 2 NICs but only one of them is configured and connected to network.

Has anybody had similar problems?

Thanks,
Dan

Backup a Windows Server 2012 HyperV Cluster

Hi All,

I have 2 servers in a failover cluster Running Windows Server 2012 attached to a FC SAN using Cluster Shared Volumes

My question is "Can 'Windows Backup' backup virtual machines running in this environment"

Simply running Windows backup on the server fails with "Windows Backup cannot backup an application with files on a CSV volume."

I am currently using Altaro HyperV backup trial on both nodes, this works brilliantly but I would like to know if ANY level of backup can be achieved without any such 3rd party software.

I note this same question has been asked but not answered on a different thread here - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/thread/dfd4f6ee-2f16-4ca4-ad84-89c86cdb448e

How to attache previous snapshot to WS2012 Hyper-V

Hi

Recently I faced an issue with my Hyper-V cluster unable to migrate to node B. After that I decided to remove my virtual machine from Hyper-V manager and re-created again with attached existing virtual hard disk. Before I delete the virtual machine I manage to performed snapshot and backup the entire folder include (virtual machines, virtual hard disks, Snapshot folder to other location. I success to recreate the new virtual machine with using existing virtual machine. After finish recreated the virtual machines I found that all the contents inside my virtual machines is gone. I really surprise which is all the applications that i installed previously also gone. I manage to apply / revert previous snapshot but i can't see list of snapshots inside Hyper-V manager. So in order to rollback to previous state I need to use snapshot to get last checkpoint. Really appreciated all expert to give any idea for this issue.

Thanks

Hypervisor failed starting

I am having this issue after loading everything and trying to start a virtual guest.  I know about the bios settings for VT and Execute Bit.  I currently don't have those settings in my BIOS and I'm working with Sun to get those added.  They aren't being the most cooperative with doing this.  They keep saying contact Phoenix and Phoenix is saying that Sun needs to do this update.  I have a Sun Ultra 40 M2 with an AMD-V processor.  My question is that I can turn on Hardware Assisted Virtualization in Virtual PC and Virtual Server without having those settings in my BIOS so shouldn't I be able to launch guests in Server 2008 Virtualization as well?

Extending Hyper-V Passthrough Volume on a Hyper-V Failover Cluster

$

I would like to know the best practice for extending a LUN and associated Windows partition structure on a Hyper-V 2.0 (R2 SP1) passthrough disk on a failover cluster. I have watched this done before and it seems fraught with issues, most notably having to rescan all nodes of the cluster to get the new LUN size to be recognized (the cluster seems to catch up after a couple of hours with its own scan). We also get IO errors on the MPIO when doing this.

On the same topic - is there an issue with doing an extension of a CSV and underlying LUN while online?

Thanks,

Dana

Hyper-V 2012 Virtual Machine Management Service stops for no apparent reason

$

Starting initial testing for migration to Hyper-V 2012 (or is it referred to as v3.0?). Essentially out of the box install of Server 2012 Data Center RTM (Full), with Hyper-V role enabled. The day after the initial setup. I opened the Hyper-V console from a remote computer to start testing and was unable to connect to the Hyper-V Management Service. Logging in to the server directly I see that the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management services has stopped (Kudos MS for making that so easy to see!). After spending awhile in the event log and finding no reason (I see the service stop but no errors associated with it) I chalk it up to a fluke of the previous days initial install. Next day same thing. Except two other services have also stopped. More event log research but no trail to follow. It’s as if the service is being commanded by something to stop?? The only possible connection I see is ConfigMgr 2012 client activity near the same time frame as the service stopping.

Obviously I can’t move forward with further testing and migration until I sort this out. Sure I can set the services to restart but not the ideal option.

Any ideas? Or is 2012 too new to consider for production? I’ve included a couple of event log entries and a list of the services that get stopped.

Thanks, Ken

Dynamic memory slow down file transfer speed over network

$

I have set up a Hyper-V test server on a HP Proliant ML110 G7 with 16 GB unbuffered ECC ram, one ssd OS disk with 4 sata storage disks on an Intel HBA.

I'm running a Server 2012 VM on a Server 2012 Hyper-V host copying files from a Windows 8 client computer.

I noticed weird performance when I copy large files over the network to a VM running on the host. After some disk benchmarking I found out that a mirrored storage space handled about ~120 MB/s sequential writes with 4 regular SATA disks. So I tried copying files to the mirrored space straight to the host, this always maxes out the network at about 110 MB/s.

Then I did some benchmarking from the VM which has it's storage disk on the mirrored space, same performance. Really good both with dynamic and static memory. No problems.

I assigned 4 GB static memory and copied over the network, maxes out at ~110 MB/s.

All looks good, until I enable dynamic memory on the VM, set 4 GB as startup and 512 MB as min. The VM is assigned about ~860 MB real memory and never demands more, the transfer slows down almost instantly from 110 MB/s to 50-70 MB/s and never recovers. At the time of the drop off hard faults in the VM goes up noticably, seems to spike up to 50 - 100/sec a few times. Still assigned memory shown in the hosts hyper-v manager show no increase, still just ~900 MB assigned.

Is this behaviour expected? Can I do anything about except assigning static memory? Somehow it looks as if the VM is memory starved which hurts file transfer performance but the VM never demands more memory.

Dear All

I have finish install windows server 2008 r2 in my IBM X3400 with hyper-v role. I was creating 2 Virtual Machine with windows server 2008 r2 and windows 7 enterprise. i am planning to use one for citrix server and one for citrix xen desktop. My question is :

1. Are both Virtual Machine will able to run in same time?

2. Do i need to pay another licenses in windows server services?

3. what role or features i need to create?

Thank you for all attentions and support.

Big Problem - VMSMP Event 25 MAC Address moved

$

Hello, we are facing big problems with our hyper-v environment.

We are running Server 2008 X64 with Hyper-V Role and 4 virtual machines on it. We have 8 physical NIC ports and made 3 virtual networks. Each of the machines is connected to a different virtual network.

Everything was working fine until yesterday we suddenly experienced network problems and could not connect via rdp to the Host and Guests from time to time.

In the event log every ten seconds there is an informational alert:

Source: VMSMP

EventID: 25

Description: "Mac Address xxxx moved from port x to port y"

This is a big issue since network connection to Host and Guest is interrupted every 10 seconds.

I tried several things to solve the problem but none of them helped:

  • Updated the network card drivers (broadcom and intel)
  • started only one machine at a time
  • assigned different virtual networks to the guests
  • Removed all virtual networks and recreated them
  • replaced the hardware switch with another model
  • rebooted host several times
  • rebooted hardware switch several times

I really don't know what causes this problem. Please help.

External network unreachable from Hyper-V VM - Win8

$

I'm trying to configure a Ubuntu 12.10 VM for development on a Lenovo W520. The solution I've attempted adds three virtual switches: one internal network for direct connections to the VM and two external, each bound to a NIC (Intel 82479LM, Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN). The internal network uses a static IP and I use it for local/X connections. The ethernet NIC also works for outbound connections from the VM.

But I cannot connect to wireless networks. I've tried normal and legacy adapters bound to the external network, tried disabling VMQ and IPsec task offloading, and verified that NIC teaming isn't enabled. My network administrator has disabled connection sharing.

When I bound the switch to the network driver, Hyper-V created a network bridge; the Wi-Fi connection now reports that it is "Enabled, Bridged" in the network connections control panel and the bridge (Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver) properties has that adapter (and only that adapter) checked. I'm uncertain why this was created, but am sternly warned not to change it.

When I attempt to acquire an IP address via DHCP from within the VM, it fails. It has been unable to connect on several different wireless networks. This makes some sense, because to the VM, it's just an ethernet card; I'm not clear how (or whether) it would use the configured credentials for the wireless device.

If there are best practices for this goal, I'd be happy to scrap this partial config to adopt sounder policies. I looked, but couldn't find solutions or even good tutorials on troubleshooting issues like this. I'd be grateful for any pointers, because the only strategy remaining to me is random changes.

HP NIC Teaming, Hyper-V, and Seemingly Random Connection Issues

$

Hello everyone. I have a bit of an issue with NIC teaming, HP hardware, and Hyper-V.

When a switch fails an a failover event is triggered I lose connectivity across several VMs. Now I have DL 580 G7s an we have added to quad port Intel NIC cards. Two of the adapters are teamed and presented to the guest OS as a single adapter for their LAN connection. The other adapters (used only for iSCSI connections) never give an issue.

My fix in the past has been to shut down the guest VM, remove the NIC from the VM configuration, power up an back down the VM, re-add the NIC, reconfigure it, and everything is good. it can then migrate across all the nodes without a problem. As you can guess this is quite painful and I do not want to have to do this any more.

Here's what I tried today that also worked (after I migrated a machine to another node and the NIC lost connectivity and I migrated it back to the originating node) - I shut down the guest OS, live migrated it over, then started it up and it worked just fine.

There seems to be some sort of issue with the NIC team driver being presented to the guest OS somehow. When the VM loses connectivity it can still ping the host OS an any other guest VMs on that node.

I have updated the NIC drivers and teaming software (as well as all the system firmware) to the latest version and played around with the config to no avail.

Has anyone else been able to solve this issue? Thanks!

2-node CSV cluster- I think I've been patching the nodes incorrectly...

$

Hello again, I have been running a server 2008 R2 based 2-node CSV cluster happily for almost a year now, but I realized recently I was probably not patching and rebooting the nodes in the most graceful manner.

I had been:

moving all hosts to the 'other' node, then patching and rebooting.

When the patched host came back up, I'd shift all the hosts back to it, then patch the 'other' node.

this seemed to work well enough, but I'd always get a slew of angry messages in the event viewer as all the networks went down.

It finally occurred to me that this couldn't be the 'right' way to do it, so I started doing some reseach.

Worth noting- I don't run SCVMM, I do all my managemet on the nodes with Failover Cluster Manager and Hyper-V manager.

So, it appears I should also be moving the CSV over to the node that isn't getting rebooted, then pausing the node that is about to be rebooted.

What is the effect of 'pausing' a node? (just curious)

Is this correct, and is there anything else I am forgetting?

thanks!
