Cluster Limitations with different CPU

0
0

Our sales guy recently purchased a new blade for a customer's existing 2-node hyper-v cluster. He didn't pay attention to the cpu of the existing servers and purchased a newer model.

The newer blade has an E5-2667 v4 @ 3.2GHz 8 core X 2

The existing blades have E5-2650 v3 @2.3 10 core X2

I'm familiar with the compatibility mode for migrating between these hosts but I'm noticing some inconsistencies.

For example, I'm able to migrate a guest running 2K12 STD between hosts WITHOUT configuring 'compatible mode'.

I am not, conversely, able to migrate a guest running 2K8R2 with out configuring that option.

What are the limitations of my VMs while running one server with a faster processor? Is it OS dependent? That is how it appears at this point. Are there any other caveats which should be addressed or noted which will make this less cumbersome for the client or am I better off downgrading the processors?

Any info on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Windows 10 problems with Hyper V

I have a Dell 13 2 in 1 running windows 10 Pro, Intel i7 5th 6th gen 250Ghz processor, Samsung SSD, 256GB. I've installed Hyper V, also intel VT is enabled, the virtual machine (Ubuntu 16.10) will run fine ,but when I create a switch to connect to the network it blocks the host from having a connection also. Once I get out of the virtual machine the host connection is still screwed up and stays that way until I delete the virtual switch and reenter my credentials. Any help that you can give would be great. I'm a college student and new to virtualization. I need all the help I can get.

Thanks.

HYPER-V Cluster W2012R2 Can't delete VHDX on CSV

'm working on a Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-v. I've just done an EXPORT of a Virtual Machine to a CSV Volume to import later.

But I hanve't performed the import, and when I went to delete the exported folder I've got an access denied error of the VHDX file.

How can I identify which is the process that locks this file and delete it? There no is any Virtual Machine with this file attached on it.

I've restarted the "Hyper-V Virtual management server" service without success.

This is not a permission problem because I've also tried to take ownership to reset permissions, but I'm also getting an 'access denied error'. Also with CACLS command.

Hi.

I try to find some information about setting up guest cluster using the new vhds format in hyper 2016.

i cant find any official info about which scenarios thats supported and howto actually set it up.

the feature im after is to be able to expand clustered disk online in a w2k12 r2 guest cluster is that even supported seen blogs that says no.

Server 2016 w. Hyper-V - can't open Hyper-V Manager after HP SPP 2016.10 is installed

Hello Guys.

I have issues with opening my Hyper-V Manager local after I installed HP SPP 2016.10 bundle on my BL460c G9 blade.

This message pop's up :

”An error occurred while attempting to connect to server ‘Server1’. Check that the Virtual Machine Management Service is running and that you are authorized to connect to the server. Hyper-V Encountered an error trying to access an object on computer ‘Server1’ because the object was not found. The object might have been deleted. Verify that the Virtual Machine Management service on the computer is running.”

I suspect WBEM and/or HP Insight Management to be the reason for this not working - any other suggestions or people that have the same issue?

Hyper-V Manager works fine, when HP SPP is not installed - so I am pretty confident that this is related.

Anyone else experiencing the same?

How to change VM settings while importing VM

Hi all,

I was hoping to be able to stand up new VMs with a minimum of fuss, but the Import-VM functionality seems woefully limited.

I created Win2016Template, sysprepped it and then exported it.

Now when I run Import-VM, the VHDs and the VM itself, retain the old settings, as I can't tell the import job that the "new"/imported VM should actually be called something else, Win2016DC01, and then name the VHDs and the VM itself correctly.

I suppose I could fudge it with PowerShell one by one, but that's inconvenient if I want to stand up 10 VMs in one go..

So, what is my best choice for importing/creating new VMs based on a template and ensuring they have the correct settings with a minimum of fuss? And by fuss I mean administrative work.

"Memory Management" Blue Screen Of Death On Host

I have a problem where about every 2 days or so, my host operating system blue screens with a "Memory Management" error. I have run the memory diagnostics on the system and manully set the timings on my RAM, everything checks out OK. All RAM sticks are matched with the same model and speeds. The host is Windows Server 2008 Standard RTM x64.

MPIO with guest cluster (shared VHDX)

Hello, I would think that using MPIO for a guest cluster on a Hyper-V cluster would not have any benefits when using shared VHDX files as shared storage. This is because MPIO is already used on the Hyper-V hosts itself. Even more, i don't think it is even possible, because the shared VHDX is directly attached to the VM and therefore not being accessed via an Iscsi or FC bus. Iam I right or am I missing something?

Hardware graphics acceleration gone after Visual Studio 2015 (with Hyper-V) install

Hi,

I'm facing a strange problem. On a fresh install of Windows 10 (Aniv. Upd.) on my Dell e6440, after I install Visual Studio 2015 with Hyper-V and system restarts the graphics performance gets sluggish. I have a Intel HD 4300 graphics inside. After VS installation the tray icon for the driver properties is gone but in device manager still says that the graphics driver is the Intel one. If I disable Hyper-V in system features and restart everything gets back to norm, graphics runs smooth and tray icon for Intel driver is back. Re-enabling Hyper-V again results in the same problem, no hardware graphics acceleration (or so it seams). All drivers installed on my laptop are the ones installed by the Windows Update. Anyone encountered this problem?

Question on Logical Network Types

Hello,

I have a lab environment setup where I have two hosts connected independently to a pair of L2

switches. The hosts are connected to a tagged management VLAN with an independent subnet with a router-on-a-stick scenario where the router has a sub-interface for the VLAN. Then I want to go and create separate route-able VLANs with their separate subnets, my question is what is the best Logical Network type for this setup?

My initial thought is to use VLAN-based separate networks and set a network site for each VLAN and set the tags.

Thanks

Licensing and using backup feature

I was wondering about licensing a simple server setup with replication server. Here is the configuration I am planning.

Server 1: Windows 2012 r2 standard, install the OS with Hyper-V role. 1 VM

Server 2: Windows 2012 r2 standard, install the OS with Hyper-V role, replication from Server 1.

1. Will I need to purchase 2 Win 2012 licenses? My server 2 is only used to replicate and as a fail over if server 1 goes offline.

2. Am I allowed to install the backup and restore feature on the Hyper-V windows install or is the only role and feature allowed Hyper-V?

Live migration of virtual machines through admin console is failing

Hi,

We have a setup of four Hyper-V 2016 servers, all fully updated and added to our domain.

The problem we have is that I can´t do live migration between servers through the Microsoft hyper-v console. This is working betweens servers if I´m doing it directly on the server and Powershell with the Move-VM command. I have enabled Live Migration and chosen "Use Kerberos" I have also delegated user rights in the AD, set it to "Use Kerberos only" and added a checked "Expanded."

I have done some testing, and if I remove the delegation and then test the live migration from Powershell on the source host, then it will fail, so the delegation is working.

These servers are on the same network, and I have sync all DC´s.

Hyper-V Server 2016 Live Migration

Hi guys,

Maybe you can help me with this.

Just upgraded my lab from 2012 R2 to 2016 Hyper-V (cluster). I have 2 Hyper-V 2016 HV1/HV2 and 1 management machine M1 (Windows 10). Upgrade was completed with no issues.

Issue: Before upgrade Live migration was working with no issues (i have 1 VM on local HDD on one of the hosts). Now if i want to migrate the VM in question from one host to other one is failling with "No credentials are available in thesecurity package (0x8009030E)" giving the fact that Constrained Delegation is in place. I perform this operation from M1 machine.

I had no issues on Hyper-V 2012 R2. I have latest RSAT.

Tahnk you.

Unable to move VM between Nano Hyper-V Hosts

0

Due to the nature of Nano Hyper-V hosts the hosts must be managed from another device.

So, I have a 2016 Server with the Hyper-V Manager console installed.  From this server I am attempting to perform a VM Move from HostA to Host B.

Move VM Wizard

As this is actually being performed from the management device there is a double credential hop when performing this action, and it failed.

With error 0x8009030E The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to establish a connection for a Virtual Machine migration with host: No credentials are available in the security package.

Following this article: https://technet.microsoft.com/fi-fi/windows-server-docs/compute/hyper-v/deploy/set-up-hosts-for-live-migration-without-failover-clustering

I changed both Nano Hosts Live Migration Settings to Use Kerberos and I enabled constrained delegation for the two servers to point to the other hyps to try and solve this issue.

This did not resolve the problem and I am still unable to initiate a VM move from one Nano Hyp to the other Nano Hyp.

Relevant configuration:

This is a 3-node cluster (all Nano hosts) being managed from a 2016 Server with the Hyper-V Manager console installed.  All nano Hyps are joined to the same domain. For VMs that are HA Live Migrations work fine.  The server I'm using to manage the Hyps and perform the move is also joined to the same domain.

This issue is presenting itself when I build a VM locally on local storage to a Hyp and then attempt to initiate a VM move to another node in the cluster, also to local storage (something I have done often without issue in 2012R2).

I have seen this issue before on 2012R2 hosts and it could be easily solved by logging into the host and initiating the move locally from the host.

But, as that is not possible with Nano, I'm open to suggestions on this issue.

Server 2012 R2 Crashes after Hyper V Role install

Hi guys,

first time posting so hope i've selected correct category!

I have done a fresh install of Server 2012 R2 on a host. The HDD was wiped clean and formatted.

It all seems good, loads up to Server 2012 R2 without any issues. Then when I have added Hyper V role through Server Manager -> Add Roles and Features, the server reboots a couple of times to complete installation, no error messages and everything seems good.

Then when installation is complete and the host tries to boot to the Server 2012 R2 it pops up a screen that there's an issue for like a second or so and reboots. It seems to be in a reboot loop all the time, gets to the same screen and starts again.

The only time you can get it to loads up is when you start it in Safe Mode.

When in safe mode I have tried to disable the Hyper V services and rebooted it. Same thing happened.

So i went to bios and disabled the Intel VT. This seemed to have helped it and server booted up ok.

But then when you enable everything back again , including VT in bios, same thing happens again and server wont start up.

I have tried to update BIOS and that didnt resolve the issue.

About the host:

CPU: Intel Xeon E5620 (x2)

Mobo: S5520HC

Any ideas what could be causing it?

Thanks for any feedback in advance! :)

Hi

I removed a team Server 2012 R2 Server with Hyper-V Roles installed. When I go to recreate the team I don't get any adapters listed even though they are there and have picked up ip addresses. I tried to create it using powershell and get the following

Problems enabling 3D acceleration using DDA

0

Hello,

We have a Windows 10 Pro x64 Gen2 VM on Hyper-V Server 2016 with a graphics card assigned to the VM using DDA. We have managed to get all that working successfully, the card is installed with the latest WHQL signed drivers and we've successfully run a number of 3D tests and confirmed a four to five times increase in framerate over what we saw when we ran the same VM using RemoteFX (for additional clarification, we're not using RemoteFX any longer, it was used simply to get a baseline performance comparison using the same hardware in a different configuration).

However, when testing a number of features such as GPU accelerated browser features, media playback and some testing tools we've found that Direct3D seems to be broken. Taking a look at DXDiag we can see that DirectDraw acceleration and Texture acceleration are both 'Not Available'. Attempting to inspect the graphics configuration leads to problems, as you can't access 'Display adapter properties' from an RDP session. Using the Hyper-V Management Console and direct connecting to the VM only allows us to access and edit the display properties of the 'Microsoft Hyper-V Video' adapter. We can disable that in Device Manager, but then when we attempt to open 'Display adapter properties' it shows the adapter as 'Microsoft Basic Display Adapter' - it has reverted to the basic display driver because the Hyper-V Video adapter has been disabled, but hasn't/isn't able to shift over to the dedicated DDA graphics card.

So how do we set the DDA graphics card as the primary/sole adapter? And can we bypass the RDP restriction disallowing adapter property access? Or is there some other way to force enabling full 3D graphics card features on a VM if you can't remove the Hyper-V Video adapter?

Thanks,

Trevor

Hyper-v live mitration fail when hyper-v replica is enabled in virtual machines

Hi.

INTRODUCTION

We have a cluster (version 2016) in production with the following characteristics.

  • 4 HP Proliant 380 G6 servers with 96 GB RAM each. (With its latest drivers and windows server 2016 datacenter updates).
  • 4 network cards; 2 for iscsi, 1 for livemigration + cluster, and 1 for the production + management network.
  • 5 512GB iscsi disks shared from a QNAP TS-879U-RP (with the latest firnware version).
  • 80 small virtual machines with windows and linux.

By testing, we have verified that Live Migrations work perfectly when virtual machines do not have the Hyper-V Replica option active. Through a powershell script we have been for hours migrating every minute machines from one server to another without any problem.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM

We want to have all virtual machines replicated on a server, so we have activated the hyper-v replica option on all virtual machines. Randomly live migrations fail. The virtual machine hangs in stopping state, totally inaccessible. There is no way to recover it except restarting the server, which takes several hours, as some service is blocked, so the server does not restart until after several hours. We tried to unlock the virtual machine by stopping the process linked to the virtual machine, stopping the hyper-v services or the cluster service, without success. As I say, the only way to recover is to restart the server and the cluster automatically move the machine on another host.

As a note of interest, comment that the cluster is upgraded to the 2016 version from a 2012 version. Before updating to Windows Server 2016 we never had these problems before. Live migrations failed sometimes, but never left the physical host "hung".

Greetings and thanks.

How to relocate VM config files in Server 2016?

0
0

I'm trying to consolidate a number of vhdx files with their corresponding VM config files into a folder named after the VM (regardless of the vhdx or config file names).

Will I need to Export/Import the VM in order to accomplish this task?

Our "standard" directory structure scheme has been violated a number of times now and we need to reduce the potential for confusion/mistakes.

Can these new binary files in 2016 be moved? Can their parent directories be renamed?

I can obtain info about the VM like this:

((Compare-VM -Copy -Path 'H:\VM\<myguid>.vmcx' -GenerateNewID).VM) | Select *

But I'm not sure how this helps me correlate the .vmcx or .vmrs files with the .vhdx or assist in the task at hand.
