Hyper-V poor vNIC performance.

$

I'm new in the Hyper-V world, and I'm interested what are the expected performance between the host and the guest os in Hyper-V.

My system is running on HP Z820 with 2 1Gbit network interfaces.

Host os is Windows 10 Pro with Hyper-V enabled version 10.0.14393.

Guest os CentOS 7 or SLES 12.

I tried different configurations, Internal only or External network configuration, but the  reached bandwidth between the Host and VM is no more then 3GBit/sec. It is really surprised me why it is so small this bandwidth. On other open source solutions like KVM I am able to reach the 20Gbit/sec.

Could you help me in explanation if the hyper-v can be configured in manner to reach higher vNIC bandwidth? And what could be the theoretical max value?

Thank you very much for help.

Build Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 - can't get past KB3172729 and KB2883200

Hello!

I am building a new Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 host (not Windows Server) and I am having problems with getting it fully patched.  I've done this many times in the past and normally get about 30 updates initially, then a single large update, then a boat-load of additional updates.  But this time I get the 30 (or so) initial updates, then two updates (KB3172729 and KB2883200).  Once I install these I can't install any further updates.  No matter what I try (uninstalling one at a time, etc.) I can't seem to get any further updates to be available.  Some notes:

  • I've tried this on three different servers - all with the same results.
  • I've tried updating these servers for the past few weeks - all with the same results.
  • I am not using WSUS - just direct Windows Updates.
  • These three server were in 3 separate geographic locations with 3 different ISP's.

I'm just not sure what to do - I know that there are more updates out there but I can't seem to get to them.

Anyone have any idea of what I should try?

Thanks.. dave

Hyper-V virtual machine managemnt service stopped on W2012 server due to "Event 10016, DIstibutedCom"

Hello,

So we had an issue on a W2012 server running Hyper-V with 5 virtual machines, that being
that the virtual machine management service was in a stopped state when I logged on hence none of the VM's were running. All I had to do was start it again and everything came back with no issues, but I want to get to the bottom of why this happened to ensure it does nto happen again.

From Event viewer I see that we had four instances of "Event 10016, DIstibutedCom" and then a further five instances and this corresponds with the VM's going offline, but also from the error you can see that it relates directly to the VMMS as below :

The
application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Launch permission
for the COM Server application with CLSID

{D9E7172C-F462-4CC8-9C80-3B3A00D0D874}

and APPID

{BD168A68-48E8-4AE5-BF4B-CC4F495A0D0F}

to the user NT VIRTUAL MACHINE\518C6C66-296F-449D-A79C-BC2D4B0BBA1C SID
(S-1-5-83-1-1368157286-1151150447-767335591-481954635) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component
Services administrative tool.

With APPID : {BD168A68-48E8-4AE5-BF4B-CC4F495A0D0F} being that Virtual Machine Management
when checking in DCOM Config.

There is no event to say that the VMMS is stopping or stopped after event 10016, as I would
expect to see and there is no common event happening before the two batches of
errors either.

Looking into event 10016 it would appear that the permissions seem to be the issue here and
I need to edit the permissions in the component services admin tool, but when
looking in DCOMConfig the security tab is grey out (probably due to UAC) but I don’t
see why this has happned now with no evniromental changes and why its not
effecting me still?

We do use SCVMM so I am wondering if an event triggered by SCVMM has caused this also ?

Any help appreciated?

Regard’s

Iain

I have two physical servers two of them has identical Hardware, Apps and OS i have enabled Hyper-v and installed 2 VMs 1. for app and 2. for DB. Everything is perfect know i have enabled the Hyper-V replication to 2 server as replica of these 2 VMS its replicating no issues. later i have install FOC role to have High Availability on both the primary and replica server

my question is, can i add nodes of replica server which replicated from primary server as a Node in failover cluster manager for HA. Please suggest.

also i have connected to server with a cross-over cable for High availability so one server gets down other can take over

Hyper-V not working after installing Remote Server Admin Tools for Windows 10

Hi Guys,

After installing the Remote Server Admin Tools (RSAT) for Windows 10 my Hyper V machine will not start. Just wondering if anyone has experienced this issue?

In the event viewer the errors are Hyper-V-Worker:

'xxx_machine' could not initialize. (Virtual machine ID XX6B9DCA-C50F-43EE-87CE-0EDAF56DAA5C)

And the Hyper-V-VMMS admin log:

'xxx_machine' failed to start. (Virtual machine ID XX6B9DCA-C50F-43EE-87CE-0EDAF56DAA5C)

Uninstalling the RSAT allows it to work again. The version I installed it the 64 bit one:

Win10 VM exporting to HyperV Server - What am I doing wrong?

$

Hi,

I’m trying to setup a test lab to compare apples for apples but having troubles with the HyperV lab (lab2).

Imagine two mini lab setups. Each lab has one router connected to the Internet and connected to the router is a server hardware spec and a workstation hardware spec.

Lab 1 is running VMWare solutions.
Lab 2 HyperV.

Lab 1 - server is running ESXi and the workstation Win10 with VMWare Workstation and VMWare vSphere (evals)

On VMWare Workstation I created an Ubuntu VM and then used vConvertor to move the VM onto ESXi and manage with vSphere.

Yay!! No problems so far…

Now on Lab2 I’m trying to do (I thought would be very simple) the same setup.

Lab2 consists of the following

  • Router, connected to the Internet, running DHCP and DNS
  • Server spec hardware for running HyperV Server 2016
  • Workstation spec hardware for running Windows 10 with HyperV features installed

The server was installed with HyperV Server 2016 (ISO 14393.0.160916-1106.RS1_REFRESH_SERVERHYPERCORE_OEM_X64FRE_EN-US.ISO from https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/evalcenter/evaluate-hyper-v-server-2016)

  • Configured in a WORKGROUP
  • Name of HYPERV
  • IP Address - 10.10.10.10 (255.255.255.0)
  • First DNS – 10.10.10.1   <<-- Address of the router
  • Second DNS – 8.8.8.8
  • Add a user to the local administrators group of workgroup\testadm.
  • Did option 6, downloaded __all__ updates.

Workstation is running Win10 in a the same WORKGROUP

  • IP Address via DHCP is 10.10.10.100
  • Installed HyperV feature
  • Also fully SP’d

At this point on the Windows10 PC I ran HyperV created a network and then added a VM called Ubuntu1

Started up and installed Ubuntu-Server edition. No problems at all.

I then shut the VM down.

On the Windows10 PC in the HyperV manager I then selected connect to a server.
Entered HYPERV using WORKGROUP\testadm with password.

Here’s my first problem (Didn't have this error until reimaging from scratch again due the following problem below). I now get a permissions error and no access allowed.

I followed the guide here (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/jj647788(v=ws.11).aspx) but that didn’t solve my issue.

Any ideas?

Now onto the main problem which I had before setting it up from scratch again.

With the fully working (although shutdown) Ubuntu1 VM.  I now want to move from Win10 PC to the HyperV Server.

Obviously I can’t to a live migration, so I did an export of the VM to a local folder on the Win10 PC (C:\exports), this folder is shared to EVERYONE with full access.

Then using HyperV manager on the Win10 PC connected to HYPERV and tried the Import process.

The import process will only show me the local C: drive (on the hyperv server) and it can’t get to the share on the Win10 where I exported.

I can’t copy/move the VM to the server, because HYPERV doesn’t have file services running, and you can’t go to \\HYPERV\$C because that didn’t work either.

What am I doing wrong??

I was hoping to do the same experiment as I did with Lab1 (VMWare) and with the same amount of ease, but having so many problems..   To which I’m convinced is a lack of understanding rather than you can’t do it.

I was really hoping to find a video tutorial on the exact set up as above but no luck.  Found something similar but the server was running Windows 2012 R2 with HyperV feature running, and not just HyperV Server.  Likewise found a tutorial using Windows 2012 R2 core with HyperV but when I followed that for HyperV Server I still get the same problems.

Argh!!! Help..

I was hoping the evaluation would sway into HyperV’s favour because the lack of driver support for ESXi is a pain. However I can’t even get past first base on the evaluation.

Links to similar tutorials, vidoes, etc would be really useful.

TBH I’m surprised Microsoft haven’t done a video showing how to rollout HyperV server (not Windows Server with/out core and HyperV) in a similar lab scenario to the above.

hyper-v issue: Mouse pointer invisible in Linux Mint 17 (run in hyper-v of windows 10)

Hi everyone:

my problem is, after I installed the Linux mint 17 in windows 10 hyper-v, the mouse was invisible in the guest OS (Linux Mint 17). While the mouse really works, I can click the buttons in the guest OS, it's just invisible. anyone know what happened? I've tried to download the Hyper-v Linux integration services and tried to install it in Linux Mint and failed to do it. The setting of hyper-v shows that all the "integration services" are offered except the "guest services".

dynamicly expanding vhdx strange behaviour

Hi,

look please at a screenshot...

D: partition is on dedicated vhdx and set as dynamically expanding.

The strange thing I cannot explain:

1.The VHDX size is 100 GB

2. in Windows I have 39GB of free space

3. When in Hyper-V manager the Current file size is about whole 100GB

For example for partition C: on dedicated VHDX it correctly matches Windows free space and current file size.

The final result is that total VM folder size is influenced by 100GB current file size. So I am loosing 40GB.

Why it could happen? Should I convert the drive to gain back 40GB. It is not a static drive...

Thanks.

Hi,

I have VM, its name VMserver2008_Two, on host VMS2008_Test1. I have tried to migrate VMserver2008_two to another host, VMS2008_Test2. But it failed with this message: 'Export failed for virtual machine 'VMServer2008_Two' with error 'General access denied error' (0x80070005).

Both host is Server 2008 with Hyper-V RC1 and same domain. And I did this as domain administrator.

Here are steps I did:

- Turn off VMServer2008_Two

- Right click on VMServer2008_Two and choose Export

- At Export Path, I browse to another host: \\VMS2008_Test2\c$

- Then hit Export tab

- After that I got that message.

Please help me and let me know what I did wrong.

Thanks

Forum FAQ: Error 0x80070005 when exporting Hyper-V VMs over the Network

$
0
0

Symptom

You use Hyper-V on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • In Hyper-V Manager, you try to try to export a virtual machine to a network share.
  • You have the full control permissions on the network share.

In this scenario the export may fail with an error that resembles the following:

An error occurred while attempting to export the virtual machine.

Failed to copy file during export.

Failed to copy file from ‘<source path of VHD file>’ to ‘<network share>’: General access denied error (0x80070005)

Cause

When you export a virtual machine in Hyper-V manager, it is the System account of the Hyper-V host that executes the export. This problem occurs because the Hyper-V host does not have permission on the network share

Resolution

Ensure the permissions allow the Computer account of the Hyper-V host performing the Export to update the shared folder.

Note: While following steps are specific to 2008, the idea is the same for updating the share and NTFS permissions if the share is hosted on other versions of Windows. You can adjust the steps accordingly.

Updating the NTFS level permissions:

1.  On the destination server, Right-click on the shared folder and select Properties.
2.  Select the Security tab.
3.  Click Edit button and click the Add button in the permissions dialog box.
4.  Click Oject Types and select Computers if not already done and click OK.
5.  In the dialog "Enter the object names to select" provide the name of Hyper-V host machine and click Check Names.
6.  With the Hyper-V host machine name select, click Allow by "Full control" and click OK.

Updating the share level permissions:

1.  On the destination server, Right-click on the shared folder and select Properties.
2.  Select the Sharing tab.
3.  Click Advanced Sharing...
4.  On the Advanced Sharing dialog, click Permissions  and then Add.

5. Click Oject Types and select Computers if not already done and click OK.
6.  In the dialog "Enter the object names to select" provide the name of Hyper-V host machine and click
Check Names.
7.  With the Hyper-V host machine name select, click Allow by "Full control" and click OK.

Hi

I have performance problem with my server. IBM x3650 have a two Virtual Machines. One of them is SQL server with 40GB RAM (30GB set for SQL). IBM x3650 have RAID 10. On SQL server i have database (21GB) and tempdb file split to 8 files (server have a 8 Cores). The problem is when i make a simple SELECT query with 33000 rows, SQL server message from statistics is

 SQL Server Execution Times:
CPU time = 8500 ms,  elapsed time = 9375 ms.

When i make a same query (sam database )but on my laptop DELL Latitude E5540 (4 cores , 8 gb RAM) statistics looks like

 SQL Server Execution Times:
CPU time = 65 ms,  elapsed time = 101 ms.

Why? Why server is slover than laptop? (today when nobody works on server (only my) statistics looks same (even if i do restart)

Server 2012 Hyper-V lost "NT Virtual Machine\Virtual Machines" permissions to "log on as a service"

We have a 2012 cluster environment running Hyper V. We have some machines that run fine on Cluster Node 1, but when we try to fail them over to other Cluster Nodes, they fail with error " Failed to create the planned virtual machine at migration destination. Logon Failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer (0x80070569)"

In researching this problem, I have found the following article that explains how to fix this issue.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2779204

However, when I attempt to add "NT Virtual Machine\Virtual Machines" accounts to my GPO's, it is unable to find the account name/group "Virtual Machines".

Does anyone have a detailed explanation of how this should be completed? Thanks.

problems moving Hyper-V VMs from old Win10 host to new

Host env WAS: Win10 Pro x64 current with Windows Update, vintage 2010 Intel Core i7 Lynnfield hardware, being retired

Host env NOW: Win10 Pro x64 current with Windows Update, Skull Canyon NUC, replacement machine

VMs: 3 VMs, 3 VHDs, two differenced from the third. Each VM was exported, from the powered off virtual state, about two months ago.

Problem: tried to import the VMs and get error "encountered an error while loading the virtual machine configuration... Import failed. Import task failed to copy file." Got error for each of the VMs when I tried to import it. Event viewer is not much more insightful:

"The description for Event ID 18440 from source Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

The locale specific resource for the desired message is not present"

I also saw some previous threads, via the Google, suggesting that I should create new VMs and "add the VHDs later" but there was no hint how one adds VHDs later or copies VHDs--with differencing chains involved--from one machine, or an exported VM, to another.

I must be missing something fundamental that I'm too ignorant to understand. Any helpful advice on how to migrate the VMs from the retiring machine to the new one would be greatly appreciated! Surely this is possible?

Question on Logical Network Types

Hello,

I have a lab environment setup where I have two hosts connected independently to a pair of L2

switches. The hosts are connected to a tagged management VLAN with an independent subnet with a router-on-a-stick scenario where the router has a sub-interface for the VLAN. Then I want to go and create separate route-able VLANs with their separate subnets, my question is what is the best Logical Network type for this setup?

My initial thought is to use VLAN-based separate networks and set a network site for each VLAN and set the tags.

Thanks

Hyper-V 2012R2 Replica Brocker Replication to Hyper-V 2016 Fails

Hi Everyone.

Right now, we have a very strange issue, we just install a new Window 2016 Datacenter Physical Server to act as a replica server to receive our production workloads replicas, every works well until we replicate several machines from our Hyper-V Cluster Replica Brocker, the replicas start the initial replica process and when it reaches 98% fails with the following error.

Event ID 33676 on Hyper-V-VMMS

Replication operation for virtual machine '*********' failed: One or more arguments are invalid (0x80070057). (Virtual machine ID 1729A75A-B136-45EE-A009-827D46FC2757) (Primary server: 'COBOGWBPSQLBRK.*****.com', Replica server: 'rep04.****.com')

Event ID 32034 in Hyper-V-VMMS

Hyper-V failed to import initial replica for virtual machine '******': One or more arguments are invalid (0x80070057). (Virtual machine ID 1729A75A-B136-45EE-A009-827D46FC2757)

The replicas that come from stand alone Hyper-V Servers works great and the Replication Health Status is Normal and continusly replicate the changes as in should do.

The issue is only with the virtual machines that are replicated from a Hper-V Cluster using a Hyper-V Replica Brocker

I'll appreciate all the help that you could offer

My company has a geocluster/multisite hyper-v cluster. We have 2 close Datacenters/Sites
We have 2 hyper-v hosts on Site1, 2 hyper-v hosts on Site1, quorum in remote office.
We have 1 HP 3PAR on Site1 and 1 HP 3PAR on Site2. We have SAN replication. We use CSV
The design is OK and valid by Microsoft....

My questions are only for learn in depth:

1) Could hosts on site 1 access to storage on Site2 or always access storage on Site1 ??
2) If 2 hosts on site1 are off and storage on Site2 is off, I supppose that any VM can start, not ??

Hyper-V Core 2016 Kerberos Constained Delegation Failing

$

Hi all,

I am running some tests in a lab environment and have run into an issue that's left me quite confused. I'm running some base VMs in VMware Workstation, two of which are nested virtualization Hyper-V machines installed on Windows Server 2016 Datacenter Core. One last machine simple serves as a GUI management node and Veeam host.

A visual representation of my environment:

>Workstation Host (VMware Workstation as hypervisor)
>>LAB-VHOST01
>>>>LAB-DC01
>>>>LAB-ADCS01
>>>>LAB-NANO01
>>LAB-VHOST02
>>LAB-MGMT01

My challenge lies within trying to live migrate a VM from LAB-VHOST01 to LAB-VHOST02 using the management console on LAB-MGMT01 using Kerberos authentication. I've set up the cifs and 'Microsoft Virtual System Moving Service' services on LAB-VHOST01 to delegate to LAB-VHOST02, and vise versa.

However, when I initiate a VM migration with those two services delegated, it fails with a 'no credentials are available in the security package' Kerberos error message, and the event log on LAB-MGMT01 reports an Audit Failure on a null SID.

When I configure either of the VHOSTs to delegate to any service, the live migration is successful. My question then is, what services and/or hosts are actually involved in this process? I've tried delegating every service to the opposite host, but it fails as well. It only succeeds when automated delegation to any service is used. I've had no luck looking online and would appreciate any input.

Cannot Delete Hyper-V Checkpoint

I just finished building 2 new Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Hosts.  Each running 3 VMs (All Server 2012 R2 as well).  I use Veritas Backup Exec.  Started a backup of each and AVHD files were created during the backup that did not merge back into the parent file after the backup ran.  To "fix" this I manually merged the AVHD file into the parent.  I then re-ran the backup and the same thing happened again.  So I merged the files again.

Now I have checkpoint that I can NOT delete in the Hyper-V Manager.  I started researching and tried some commands in Powershell but nothing seems to work.

Please help....
