Create Homelab deparate from Main Network and give Access Point

0

Hello everbody. I am trying to create a homelab .

This homelab consists in a desktop that has 2 ethernet gigabit cards, and one wifi card.

This homelab has installed windows server 2012 R2 with HyperV role.

Whithin hyperV i have installed:

DC (windows server 2012 R2 with DNS-DHCP and Domain Controller)

IPCOP (virtual router that connects with my ISP Router)

IPCOP separate the main network (192.168.0.1/24) from the laboratory network (192.168.1.1/24)

DC acts as DHCP in the laboratory network

The thing is, that i want to use the wifi card (of my homelab) as an access point to connect from an external computer (like my laptop) trough this access point (and also be routed to internet).

For now, the only "access point" i have, is the one that the ISP provides me. But this access point, gives access to the "main network", and i want to create another access point to access from outside to the "laboratory network" (192.168.1.1/24).

First, of all, sorry about my english, i tried to be as simple as i can to explain it.

I will really apreciatte any help to create an access point in laboratory network .

I'll post a graphic to be more comprehensive.

SR-IOV active on VMs, even though get-vmhost.IovSupportReasons reports {OK}

One of our servers (HQ DL580g7, using Emulex OCe14102-UX Nic) has recently begun failing to make SR-IOV active for VM's assigned to the applicable vSwitch. This had been working in the past, but we did not notice when it stopped working  to have a clue what event has triggered the failure.

This server is in a cluster with 2 other identically configured servers. We can live-migrate a VM from that server to either of the other two and SR-IOV becomes active for it on the other servers.

(get-vmhost).IovSupportReasons reports {OK}, and (get-vmhost).IovSupport reports True.

But a VM configured to use SR-IOV on the host still reports it is using VMQ. What else are we missing?

iSCSI Offload and/or TCP Offload

We have Broadcom BCM57840 NICs in our servers to connect to an iSCSI SAN. These cards have TCP Offload Engine and iSCSI Offload Engine (both licensed).

They have been left disabled in the past. Now I'm looking at optimizing things a bit... should I enabled them? Both or just one? I cannot find any piece of info about the correct configuration and the coexistence of the two offload engines.

Hyper-V 2012 R2 - authentication issues (EventID 5823)

Hi,

We have a Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster running for several years now. On one of the hosts Domain accounts were no longer usable - had to Login using the local admin account. The VMs are running just fine - but not manageable through SCVMM or Failover Cluster Manager anymore. Powershell on hyper-v Level works.

I checked Logs... the only thing I found is in Systems: a DNS error followed by Event 5823 "The System sucessfully changed ist Password on the Domain Controller XXX. This Event is logged when the Password for the Computer account is Change by the System...".

The host is able to reach all DNS and AD servers. Name resolution works. I searched for the Event 5823 - found many entries regarding mix of AD 2003 and AD 2012... but this is not the cause of the problem as we never had an Active Directory 2003 or Domain Level 2003. Does anyone have an idea how to find the reason for this problem? I would try to use reset-computermachinepassword in hope of not having to reboot the server. Does anyone knows more about this situation and what works best?

Migration of Virtual Machines from Server 2012 R2 to Server 2016

Hello,

I am planning to migrate virtual machines from server 2012 R2 cluster to newly created Windows server 2016 cluster. I tried to use the tool available here https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Moving-Virtual-Machine-and-016ec242 which is not working. any other way to do it? Thanks

New Cluster- 2012 or 2016?

Hi. We currently have a five node Windows Server 2012 cluster (not R2).

We are wanting to create a new cluster in a new location and then migrate the existing VMs to this new cluster.

We have a new server that we built as 2012 and I was planning to evict one of the existing nodes from the old cluster, then move it over to the new location and make a new two node cluster.

The question is, should we create a new 2016 cluster or just do another 2012 cluster?

If we created a 2012 cluster, how hard would it be to convert this to a 2016 cluster down the road? Can you upgrade the nodes one at a time or do you need to upgrade them all at once?

Also, in either case, I was thinking of using Shared Nothing Live Migration (SNLM) to migrate the VMs across. Since this new cluster will be on an entirely different network, would it be easier to export the VMs and them import them at the new location?

Thanks,
Tom

Server 2016 Hyper-V Remote desktop connection certificate mismatch issue

Hi,

I built a Windows server 2016 with the Hyper-V role, and when I try to connect to a VM if fails with a "certificate mismatch" error. VM is located in the same server.  It seems that the mismatch is because of the FQDN in the certificate (servername vs servername.lab.internal).   I will appreciate any information that could resolver the issue that I am experiencing.

Thanks

Dear All,

I have a strange thing on my new Hyper-V server. After few hours I'm not able to create / move VM on this Hyper-V without getting this error:

The server encountered an error while creating New Virtual Machine.

Creating the virtual machine failed.

The server is a Windows 2016 server Data center Edition fresh install, all patches are installed and the only installed things are Hyper-V, and backup agent. Storage is on an MSA 1040, i have applied the special permission for account "Virtual Machine". I'm domain admin. I can navigate the storage whitout error create files, folder ect..

If i reboot the server everything is working fine for a moment then the error re-appears.

Thanks for reading and for helping,

C.

This has happened after installing the latest update Cumulative Update for Windows Server 2016 for x64-based Systems (KB3206632_. Another problem that also happened at same time is that I have one Domain controller that was installed in a vm with TPM and encrypt traffic checked, well, now this vm won't start because it says ISOLATED USER MODE is off on the VM HOST.

Something must have changed with this update.  I am about to dig into it/ however no matter what I do I cannot even get to the settings of the VM Running COnfiguration Manager CB on server 2012r2 as a vm because of the Message in the title.

I was able to get the domain controller to start by disabling TPM in the hyper-v settings but I can not get to the settings for the ConfigMgr VM, it seems as if this vm is lost and I was running COnfiguration Manager server.  I may have a backup but it had like 6 drives attached and I can't get to those drives in the settings of the VM,

help!

Hi all

Background there are three hyper-v servers 2012 hosting 6 virtual machines per host.

Every so often a virtual machine server 2008 r2 will BSOD, examining the dump file and the following is reporting back.

The VM was last patch withsecurity updates in June

SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLEDBug Check code    0x0000007e
Parameter 1   ffffffff`c0000005
Parameter 2   00000000`00000000
Parameter 3   fffff880`0236a928
Parameter  4  fffff880`0236a180
Processor
x64
C:\WINDOWS\minidump\MEMORY.DMP
Processor Count 4
Major Version 15
Minor Version    7601

When I run the dump file through WinDdg it is suggesting the fault lies with module_Name NT

SYMBOL_NAME:  nt!KxStartSystemThread+16

FOLLOWUP_NAME:  MachineOwner

MODULE_NAME: nt

IMAGE_NAME:  ntkrnlmp.exe

Any suggesting how to resolve this would be very muchappreciated

The hardware in question is an Samsung laptop np270e5e-kd2br and in contact with the Samsung Live Chat, they provide the .inf driver files.

I've succeed importing the driver using pnputils, but still no conection. When I ask for the interface status it shows nothing at all.

Hyper V Cluster Migration 2008R2 SP1 to 2012R2 Side by Side

I am currently in the process of creating 4 x 2012R2 Servers to create a new 2012 R2 cluster ready to migrate my current 2008 R2 cluster to.

I will be using the same storage, my question is, I would like to create the new hyper v cluster and have this running for a little while before I actually migrate the live cluster to this, do I simply connect the new cluster to the same storage group on my SAN (dell isci md3600i), will this cause me any problems when I present storage to my new hyper v cluster?

                          Many Thanks in advance

Hyper-V SpeedStep Not Working in Host VMs?

0

Hey Everyone,

I am hoping that someone out there can help me understand how SpeedStep works with Hyper-V VMs. My Hyper-V host (Server 2016) has an i5 with a clock speed of 1.6ghz and boosts to 2.7ghz and my guest VM is running Server 2012R2. When my guest VM is pegging the CPU at 100%, it's performance monitor says the CPU is running at 1.6ghz, but the host computer says 2.7ghz.

My question is, why does my guest say 1.6ghz while the host is at 2.7ghz. Is my guest really only running at 1.6ghz max? Or is it really running at 2.7ghz like the host indicates, and it's just not reporting it correctly to the guest?

Any info would be greatly appreciated :) !

hyper v 2016 core installation on Windows 10 laptop

After constantly hearing about hyper-v and ITS Technologies I dared to learn it myself I started off with VMware and virtualbox and was able to get the hang of it quickly however Microsoft 10 limitations made me switch to hyper-v or at least consider it I downloaded the stand-alone 2016 hyper-v server core. Did I just messed up my computer? Stuck in configuration mode with only two command prompts at my disposal as config and regular roll command prompt I have said all of the settings do it I think is the proper setup using as config and Powershell. However, I can not get out of this mode to go into Windows 10 OS I've tried to reset it I've tried to block it off longer back on it always reloads back to the to command prompt menu why does hyper-v and Microsoft make it so incredibly possible to use this technology do they hate customer tried calling online tech support and got absolutely little to absolutely no help can somebody please give me any advice on how they fixed it if they occurred the same situation.

Access Denied on VHD permissions

0

Hi,

I'm dealing with an incredibly frustrating problem where a VHD on a clustered shared volume has lost it's NTFS permissions, and I can't seem to correct them.

Initially the VM was on a clustered role but I've since removed the role as I read that Hyper-V manager could set the permissions if I remove the disk and try to re-add it from there. Unfortunately when I tried this it wouldn't let me add the disk again. Access Denied.

I've also tried modifying the permissions using icacles, trying to give full permissions to either an admin account or the 'NT Virtual Machine\<Guid>', but when I try to se the permissions I get an Access Denied on setting them. This was being run from an elevated command prompt too.

Any ideas what the solution is?

Thanks

Dave

Hyper V 2012 R2 - Virtual Switch Manager - Teams Not Showing Up

Hi All,

I am trying to create an external virtual switch but the only options I get are all of the individual network adapters, I do not see the teams I have previously created in the available list to choose from.

In 2008 R2 when you create a virtual switch the list of teams show up, am I missing something?

                          Thanks

Hyper-V MAC Adress Conflicts

Hello Community,

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 Host with 6 VMs. suddenly the host went inaccessible across the network due to MAC address conflict which was logged in the event log as below.

(Warning) MAC conflict: A port on the virtual switch has the same MAC as one of the underlying team members on Team Nic Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver.

I've seen a resolution in one of the MSDN wiki (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/31357.hyper-v-mac-address-conflict-event-16945.aspx) but doesn't seems to be the right way of resolving this (Change the MAC Address Manually - not a good practice at all !)

To Describe more on the setup - we have 4 VMs connected to Production Switch (Shared NIC) | 2 VMs connects to DMZ Network (VLAN Directly binds to VM, Not Shared). When the Host gone inaccessible, All VMS became inaccessible.

Appreciate any thoughts !
